Ann Arbor’s Best New Restaurants and Bars, May 2025 | Eater Detroit

"This new spot on Main Street showcases chef Li Zhou’s passion for blending flavors and highlighting diverse Asian cuisines. The two-level space offers distinct experiences: fusion dishes like braised beef short ribs with wasabi mashed potatoes and whole pan-fried branzino on the first floor, and a rotating omakase menu upstairs featuring inventive sushi such as toro nigiri with truffle, and salmon with avocado and strawberries. Exposed brick walls add warmth to the restaurant’s modern, upscale vibe. To sip, choose from the Japanese whisky and sake choices. Book a reservation at Tabe’s website." - Mary Hayes Weier

Absolutely LOVE this place. The most fresh sushi with an elegant atmosphere. I am so happy they opened up in Ann Arbor, I will be coming here as often as I can. Omakase was amazing, the price is 100% worth it. I would eat here everyday if I could! Leo is amazing and so is all the staff, they make you feel so welcome and comfortable. Eating here is an experience you will not regret!

We did the omakase experience and it was great. Food was incredibly fresh. We picked the earlier reservation at four so we could have the meal by ourselves and it was great talking to the chef and getting to really savor the food. It was extremely clean and we would do it again.

Such a cool spot, I was blown away! I had the privilege of speaking with the head of the restaurant before my meal as I got there early and was waiting for my date. I have spent many years of my life working nearly every job you can name in a range of restaurants and managing pizza spots. I could tell right when I walked in that there was a very strong leader behind Tabe. You can tell how each member of the staff was well trained and leading with a service oriented approach. The atmosphere is amazing, three total floors! Ground floor is a little more casual, I was sat on the second floor which leans towards casual fine dining. Restaurant was spotless. The second floor sushi bar is such a cool setting, complemented by great lighting and decor to set the vibe just right. Our server was really kind and attentive, great human being!! Never once felt like I was waiting on anything and he had good suggestions for what to order. Apps options are deep with a really cool fusion flair, try the sushi tacos for certain! My brother is a sushi chef working for largest wholesale Japanese fish distributor in the US. I know quality sushi and Tabe had excellent selection and very fresh product. The Tuna and Yellow Tail sashimi was out of this world. Rainbow roll a must try. We did not drink but for the quality of food, excellent service from multiple members of the staff, and atmosphere of Tabe, $50 per person was very reasonable. I'm going back and brining more friends to experience the joys of Tabe!

Google
We had the omakase and it was truly the best ever — every bite was perfection. The sushi was incredibly fresh, beautifully balanced, and presented with such artistry. You can taste the passion and precision in every course. A huge thank you to Leo, Jeffery, Victor, and Ling for making the evening unforgettable. Their warmth, knowledge, and attention to detail elevated the entire experience. This is hands down one of the best sushi restaurants in Michigan — an absolute must-visit for anyone who appreciates authentic, top-quality omakase.

Google
Ann Arbor's Omakase Oasis Choosing the omakase at Tabe is less a meal and more a front-row seat to culinary artistry. It's an act of trust, and the chefs reward it brilliantly. Having the head chef personally guide us through each course, explaining every perfect bite, transformed the dinner into a truly special and engaging experience. The quality was simply flawless, from glisteningly fresh fish to the culinary theater of scallops being seared with a blowtorch right before our eyes. The passion and friendliness of the staff match the incredible food. Tabe isn't just serving the best high-end sushi in Ann Arbor—it's crafting one of the city's most memorable dining experiences. An absolute must-try.

I have been here with friends about 4-5 times now and will continue coming back. My criticisms of this place in this review is meant to help improve what I view as the best place to get sushi in downtown Ann Arbor. The freshness has always been top notch, as well as the plating of the food. The vibes are also really good both inside and out of the restaurant. As far as service goes, there is a lot of improvement that is needed. I will say that most experiences I have had, are small technical fixes that should improve with a little time. Here's what I have to share: - Servers are always cordial, but they often are not aware of stock of certain things. For example, what desserts are in stock, what wines are available, or when happy hour is. It used to be during lunch hours but recently changed, but since it was still displayed, they did give us that pricing. - A specific, and rather unfortunate, experience I have had was after ordering a spicy scallop roll (a special roll). Upon receiving a plate full of my and my friends orders, the waiter pointed out each roll that was ordered. After leaving, my friend and I agreed that the roll that he claimed was mine, was actually his salmon roll. I think this server was particularly busy that day (4th of July), as it took a while to get our soy sauce after receiving the sushi. We had to ask the other server to get it for us, and when she returned with it, we asked her about the sushi mix up. We saw them speak soon after, and when he returned, he doubled down that I had received what I ordered. I conceded, because it just wasn't worth continuing, but my request was simply to be charged for what I had actually received in its place. We received a spicy tuna roll (about half the price of the spicy scallop) in addition to our order, so we suspect it was put in improperly. I recently went back and ordered 1 roll, the spicy scallop roll, to confirm my suspicions. It was delicious, and definitely not served to me the first time. We've had two really good service experiences, but on the 4th, we've had our first bad experience which didn't bode well with any of us. It seems that whenever we were sat inside, the service was a lot better or it may seem to depend on the server that you get. We've had one server a few times outside and she was fantastic. She may have been off on the 4th and that was our first bad experience there. There is a lot of good about this restaurant, so I'm really hoping they improve on communication across their team and with guests (in some cases), and their technology.

Google
Best sushi in Michigan! The quality of sashimi at Tabe in unmatched! Great service and excellent quality fish. I have got carryout there several times and it never disappoints! I can’t wait to go back!

Google
Best sushi in Ann Arbor, in my opinion. We had salmon and tuna sashimi along with the Christmas roll and a Chilean sea bass roll. Our server, Jess, was excellent and knowledgeable and provided great recommendations. We’ll have to come back to try the rest of the menu and the omakaze. The oysters were good too, in particular the one with the quail egg

Yelp
I came here as part of a work retreat. There were multiple appetizers ordered for the table. I saved my appetite for the main course and I'm very glad that I did. Even though everyone seemed to be very pleased with the appetizers. First of all, the staff was extremely friendly. Very kind and helpful. I tossed questions at our server about Japanese whiskey, and he was able to give me exactly the right flavor profile that I was looking for. The food was phenomenal. I ordered the Samba delight. It was a mix of shrimp, scallops, and chicken. All of it in a delicious sauce, stir fried with vegetables. Truly an explosion of flavor in my mouth. I couldn't stop eating it. The plate itself was really cool. Great ambience overall. Multiple levels of seating areas and it was overall just pleasant to be in.

Yelp
I've gone to Tabe twice, once for omakase and once for general seating. The omakase experience was really worth it for the cost. Their fish is extremely fresh and they have a wide range of fish. The nigiri and sashimi for the omakase was served with fresh wasabi. Both times, the team has been extremely welcoming and is attentive to all the guests. The restaurant has a very modern vibe but it's also well lit inside the restaurant. The omakase is served on the second floor so it feels a little more private if you're one of the only omakase experiences during that time period.

Yelp
This review is for the omakase experience. We made a reservation in advanced for the highest tier omakase. All omakase options have a $50 per person deposit that is applied to your final bill. The food was excellent, and generous. If I were to do the omakase again, I would do the low or medium tier option, as this was a LOT of food and I left stuffed! I enjoyed every course. The fish selection was fresh, quality, and unique. The flavor combinations and detail were creative and tasty. The nigiri courses were phenomenal. The handroll with toro and uni was SO great. We watched them make it and it was really stuffed with both. Only downside was that the pacing felt super rushed. My suggestion would be to slow down just a little bit! Most of the time, we weren't finished with the course or even just the bite in front of us when the next was being placed. I would love to be able to enjoy the course in front of me and appreciate all its flavors before moving onto the next.

Yelp
Easily the best sushi restaurant (in terms of atmosphere) in Ann Arbor. As far as I'm aware it's the only place that does omakase. I haven't done the full omakase experience but I have had sushi multiple times and can say it's great and the ambiance is fantastic but it has its faults. The sushi deluxe which I ordered tonight was filled with redundant cheap cuts of fish. The salmon was delicious but most of it was mid white fish. It came with a salad which I really enjoyed and was packaged nicely. The workers are lovely and try hard but need to be educated more. To be clear I am blaming this on the owner/manager. They should do a crash course on sushi for everyone that works there. Regardless I would happily go back, it's really excellent sushi and the rice is perfect.

Yelp
We did the 12 course omakase. Oh my gosh--AMAZING. Not inexpensive but each course was amazing. They even served a complementary sake with the sashimi and the dessert course. Service was wonderful, and I can't say enough great things about the experience!

Yelp
Came here on a friday night and wasn't too hard to get a reservation. Our server was attentive and very knowledgeable on the menu and ingredients. The lemon slices on the sushi was a nice addition to the fresh salmon and our server mentioned the fish is flown in from Japan daily. Highly recommend the thai curry as well as it had a great depth of flavor and good portion size.

Yelp
Lots of courses for an omakase. The pieces were fresh and there were plenty to feel satisfied. I do wish there were less appetizer courses and more sashimi pieces. There were plenty of salad and fried food options for the start of the meal, but I would want them to be replaced by sashimi instead. The interior of the restaurant is very classy, and the drinks were also tasty and strong. It was nice to see the sushi chefs working on the pieces.

Yelp
Okay, no. I'm sorry, but our experience here was weird. I cannot recommend the omakase. It might be fine if you come and just order random sushi and drinks, but expect to wait and pay a lot. Started off on the wrong foot when our server told us that since we booked a couple weeks ago, the omakase prices all went up by $30. That's after a $100 non-refundable deposit. So we ended up going with the lowest tier ($90) instead of the middle tier (previously $90, now $120). Glad we did, because the other folks seated at the bar with us went with higher tiers and the differences were minimal and definitely not worth another $30. It was like, a slightly different soup, one additional shrimp nigiri, and some different toppings on the nigiri. Whatever. The "sake pairing" advertised is not what you think of as a drink pairing. It was a single bottle of sake "cold or hot," we had to ask which it even was, and it was for the whole meal. No pairing with courses. The server was nice enough to notice a gnat had flown inside the bottle and gave us a replacement. (There were several gnats flying around the sushi bar). The music here is weird. It was like, disco "shake your groove thang" and Michael Jackson dance hits. Not something you'd expect in a high-end or even an Asian restaurant. It was distracting. The staff was visibly in disarray. The food was running behind. Their walkie talkies (weird?!) were audibly going off and calling for certain people to do things. This business has been open for half a year at this point iirc so, what's going on with management where things are going off the rails on a Thursday night with only maybe a quarter of the tables occupied? We were there an hour and had only been served soup and oysters. During the omakase we had: 1. Miso soup - fine. 2. Oysters two ways - the hot one was nasty, supposedly there was cheese in there but it tasted like mayonnaise and left a greasy palette. The cold one with the quail egg was very good but oddly warm. 3. Baby octopus - did not eat this, I typically like grilled octopus, but could not stomach it in this presentation (entire tiny creatures). 4. Sashimi - this sat out exposed on the bar to get warm for a good 10 minutes before being served to us. Kind of gross. Nothing special, but I liked the mackerel and scallops. It included toro, which was nice. 5. Nigiri - this was among the strongest of the courses. Several had really nice combinations of fish cuts and toppings. However the chef made sure to mention to everyone several times that it has FRESH WASABI that cost $150 a pound. He told you this until you acknowledged it and seemed impressed. Sea bream with scallion and salmon with garlic were our favorite nigiri. We had a squid and daikon one that legitimately tasted like soap... I have no idea how or why. 5. Salmon hand roll -- very good, but difficult to mess up? 6. Matcha panna cotta dessert - this may have been my favorite of all the courses. Simple and fresh, could have eaten bowls and bowls of it. I feel like the dessert shouldn't be the highlight of an omakase meal. I will not be returning to Tabe. The omakase was almost a total waste of money. The service was awkward and slow. There are other good -- better -- (and more affordable) places to get sushi. This place has a lot to work on.

Yelp
I came here for the $90 omakase experience. The sashimi and sushi were quite tasty. The overall amount of food was good too. It came with a delicious dessert at the end. The meal came with miso soup (great), tiny fried fish (ok, oily), and oysters two ways (not a huge fan of oysters but they were fine). Personally I wouldn't mind getting rid of these three for more sushi and sashimi. Highlights- otoro, salmon, yellowtail, sea bream, squid, scallops, and the dessert! Overall the best sushi in Ann Arbor, however it is pretty pricey. They do get the fish and wasabi from Japan (we were told by the chefs). Ambiance was nice and quiet. Watching the chefs was a treat as well. Service was decent. Overall very good, but a touch expensive. For those who want to enjoy sushi beyond an Americanized roll, I would recommend it. Omakase requires a $50/person reservation fee online which is subtracted from the final bill. Reserving was easy.

Yelp
*disclaimer: was offered free dessert in exchange for review. Was walking around with a friend looking for somewhere to eat. Saw this place (new!) and decided to stop in. LOVED it. I thought the decor was gorgeous and the food delicious. There isn't really another upscale Asian restaurant in Ann Arbor, save Slurping Turtle- and this is nicer than that. Everything was good and we enjoyed our experience. The only thing that could have been improved was speed of service- the servers all looked busy and I think we were being served by a manager. Had to flag them down for the check but we'd been sitting a long while, it's possible they didn't know when we'd be done. It was busy and as a server myself, that absolutely happens, no big. Cocktail was yummy and the offer of free dessert was a nice touch. Both desserts were wonderful.

Yelp
Best sushi place I've been to in A2. We recommend the sushi symphony; it's great and enough food for two. The miso is also fire. We also sometimes supplement with regular rolls (pictured here) and they're great.

Yelp
Went last night for the first time. There's more than one floor and the environment is nice, warm, but I only saw the first floor. Booths are spacious. I had the flank steak entree and it was really good, though the rice that came on the side wasn't my favorite. The lychee martini was great and our server was very attentive. Food came out quickly and was fresh.

Yelp
The omakase dinning is AMAZING! The freshest sushi I have ever had! You won't leave disappointed

Yelp
Food and drinks were great. The service was a bit slow and disorganized, but it's a new restaurant and they'll figure It out!

Yelp
Service was not good. Forgot to come back for our main meal order, drink order after water service took forever (and it was not busy) and server disappeared. Luckily the other nearby server noticed our awkward glares for help and came to the rescue. No edamame options (garlic or spicy) which most sushi places easily will do even if not on the menu. Sushi we order was good from a size perspective but was just ok. Nothing to write home about...or yelp about. Plenty of other options out there.

Cabo Rob D.

Yelp
Not a truly Omakase experience. !! This was Nothing but , sashimi, soup, desert. Very disappointing, over priced. Will not go back. As you will see if you try it.

Melissa S.

Yelp
Always a great experience--fresh, flavorful sushi, excellent service, and a cozy, inviting atmosphere that keeps us coming back.

Katherine G.

Yelp
Came for lunch and had just amazing food. The avocado salad was divine. Got a vegetarian roll and rainbow rolls. Miso soup was delicious. We asked them to make tempura without the shrimp and it was fantastic. As a vegetarian, I had plenty of choices. Prices were extremely reasonable for the quality of the food, and it was really high quality. Like eating in NYC at a fancy restaurant. Will ABSOLUTELY come back and send my friends. Everyone was very friendly and helpful.

Alyson R.

Yelp
I tried to send a private note to the restaurant but their "Contact Us" link responds with "Failed to send message. Please try again later" so I'm adding my note here: Hello, I wanted to share my experience at your restaurant April 8, 2025. I made a reservation for six people on the first floor. When I checked in two of us were seated on the second floor despite my mentioning that my reservation was on the first floor. We sat upstairs and the rest of our party did not join. About 6:15 pm a woman came up and said the rest of our part was seated downstairs. When they arrived, they had been told I had not checked in. Secondly, the waiter did not appear to be well-informed. He did not know about the wine list or food allergies. Lastly, two of party ordered the same dish. One was brought it with the rest of the orders. The other arrived half-way through our meal. What we found particularly surprising was the waiter did not seem empowered to offer that meal free or similiar - or approach the manager about doing so. While to food was good, the service was severely lacking. It feels more like a training, as opposed to competence, issue. A different group of friends also dined at Tabe and had the same experience. We all hope you are able to get the kinks out and best of luck! Alyson

Yelp
Food was well prepared, fresh, and tasty. Ambiance is modern but comfortable. Staff seemed professional but overworked and lacking precision. Our appetizers and salads came quickly but the main entrees were significantly delayed. Server apologized but said there was a large party upstairs. Staff did not offer anything to address our displeasure during the wait.

Claire B.

Yelp
The food was delicious! I got the stirfried udon noodles and tiramisu. I loved both dishes and would go back! The service was great. The food came out quick and and the staff was wonderful. The ambiance was a nice vibe low lighting which i really enjoyed

Renee T.

Yelp
While Tabe is lovely and the servers are polite, the service was a bit laggardly. I'm always mystified when the first round of cocktails is done, and the main dish arrives, and you have to hunt down your server to place another drink order. The cuisine is tasty, particularly the avocado salad. I found that the three 1 1/2" long pieces of squid scallion were very flavorful, but underwhelming at $18. Pad thai and short ribs were nice. I may have been hoping for more, but I felt that the cuisine was comparable to the other fusion restaurants in town. Maybe there are too many such establishments?

Juliet O.

Yelp
I went to tabe impulsively walking around Ann Arbor visiting I walked in and it was beautiful!! Our server was Ty, he was amazing he was very attentive and kind and helped us with any questions we had. It's a new business and I believe it will thrive ! The food was amazing too the sushi was the best I've had in Ann Arbor so far! Highly recommend when visiting Ann Arbor

Maiko W.

Yelp
We had a great time here at Tabe, our server Mason took good care of us. We've been looking for a sushi spot in Ann Arbor for a while, and at Tabe the sushi was very fresh and they had a creative menu. Especially liked the toro, the salmon, the sweet shrimp, and the tiramisu! The sashimi was at a reasonable price point for the quality. Also had a neat ambiance inside.

Kelli G.

Yelp
What an amazing restaurant!! It's a nice addition to downtown Ann Arbor. The Thai Curry Chicken & Shrimp was very tasty! We will be back!

Alex F.

Yelp
The service was among the worst I've ever experienced. They have no idea how to run a restaurant. Would definitely not recommend this place to anyone.

Lynn M.

Yelp
While the service was slow to start, it was TOTALLY WORTH THE WAIT. We sat at the sushi bar on the second level. The atmosphere and decor were calming and great music playing in the background. We ordered up Omakase at the sushi bar for my birthday. It was the best Japanese meal we have ever eaten in Ann Arbor! Every bite was fresh, perfectly presented with great accoutrements and tastes both subtle and bold. Highlights included toro nigiri with truffle shavings, a toro and uni handroll, and a ceviche of salmon, avocado, strawberries, mango and a light sauce. Every flavor in that ceviche was present in every bite. Beyond delicious! The smiling and kind head chef came out twice to chat and ask how the meal was going. And the sushi chef gave us lovely descriptions all along the way, sometimes sharing a photo and info about fish that was new to us. We are already planning our next meal there.
