Taberna Recreo

"Located close to the Retiro park, this contemporary taberna has plenty of personality and views itself as a metaphorical "playground" where guests can enjoy a fun, relaxed dining experience (“recreo” is the Spanish for play or leisure). Having trained in “temples” of Spanish cuisine such as DiverXO, El Poblet and Zortziko, chef Alejandro Díaz was keen to create a space for socialising around the theme of gastronomic cuisine, hence his focus on fun tapas and innovative dishes perfect for sharing which delight guests thanks to their character, combinations of ingredients and flavour. The broccoli with kimchi and lime is a must!" - Michelin Inspector

This is a lovely restaurant in a classy neighbourhood in Madrid. The flavours all complement each other - the broccoli with kimchi/lime is sensational, and the beef cannelloni is also recommended.

Small but original menu. Spanish food with original twist. Every dish we ordered were great! Broccoli and tomato tartar was eye opening🤩 Lemon Olive biscuit tart as dessert was a perfect finish!

Very nice Taberna with traditional Spanish flavours updated by using global cuisine. The local is small so you won't get a table unless you book in advance. The staff is really nice and provides detailed information about every dish and how you must have it. We ordered a variety of small plates and everything was delicious!

Amazing solo meal (some of the dishes can be made into half portions)! Every dish was thoughtfully prepared—the layered flavor builds will definitely delight anyone looking for something out of the ordinary. Nice combination of Asian and European ingredients. Service was very friendly and personalized. Would definitely come back.

Spectacular! The value proposition mixes our traditional tapas with haute cuisine (Michelin Star level) by cooking them with innovative methods. I cannot enumerate every dishes but precisely the flavor of the broccoli amazed me… speechless! (Ps. I’m not a big fan of it, but you cannot miss it if you go)

Loved this place! The food is just perfect, surprising and so tasty. The restaurant is cozy and easy going but still elegant, great service to solo eaters as well! Will recommend this place to people visiting Madrid

I highly recommend this place! Attentive and down-to-earth service. Try the broccoli with Kimchi and lime, along with the fresh tartare with prawns and octopus. It's a culinary delight!

A remarkable addition to Madrid's culinary scene, created by Michelin-starred chef Pablo Montero, who managed the Domaine de Abadía Retuerta hotel and decided to leave it all to star the taberna with fellow chef Alejandro Díaz. A place with character, no pre-conceived concepts and an attentive service headed by Chef Montero himself. It replicates a Spanish taberna but adds the skills and techniques of Michelin category restaurants. Offers a limited amount of delicately crafted dishes (11 during my visit), three combinations of cheese plates and three desserts. The wine list is short but made up of interesting and inexpensive wines (11 red and 4 whites). This part needs improvement, because the food deserves a deeper cellar to pair it with. It is worth a visit, if only to try the best broccoli dish on planet Earth: crunchy in texture and dripped in kimchi, lime and smoked cumin. Delicious and one of the best tapas of 2016.
