We'd visited a Druze home and cooked traditional Druze dishes, when we took a culinary tour through Israel several years ago. So when I read about Taboonia, I was eager to try it.
Out for an afternoon walk, we decided to go check it out. It was too late for us to have lunch, but too early for dinner. We found the limited menu very appealing, though, so we did takeout, a logical and rewarding decision.
First of all, as we walked in, a young man behind the counter warmly welcomed us and showed us the food, explaining which bourekas were which. They sell potato, feta za'atar, and what he called American style, stuffed with mozzarella. Meanwhile, the owner gave us each a small paper cup of a hot spiced tea, so good.
We bought 2 "platters," if that's the right word. Each consisted of a feta-za'atar boureka, a sliced hard boiled egg, a good pickle, and a little container of hot sauce (right up my alley). In addition, we couldn't resist a pint container of their own hummus.
At home about an hour later, I gently heated the bourekas in the toaster oven. I plated a warmed, crisp boureka, with the accompaniments. I put a serving spoon into the hummus container and we ate.
DE-licious! We put a dollop of hummus (I added some hot sauce) and took a bite. Oh, yum! Very tasty, crunchy crust and soft warm insides, well-seasoned.
We look forward to going there again, at a mealtime. There are just 2 or 3 tables inside. You order at the counter; I presume someone brings the food to the table when it's ready. There's a refrigerator with cold beverages and there are other edibles, but for me I went to check out bourekas. I understand that their bread is not to be missed so that's one thing I look forward to trying!
Food very good, service warm, definitely worth a visit! FYI, the address says Sixth Avenue but the place is really on 29th St.
Do try it!
