Yelp
So glad to have a great Shabu Shabu place so close to me in North County.
I haven't had Shabu Shabu since visiting Japan years ago and I can't believe that I waited so long to have it again.
I have had this place on my list for a while but waiting for the right time.
Well last night was finally the right time.
The parking lot is small and filled because there are so many other businesses in this little strip mall. But I did find a spot.
Walking up to the restaurant and it doesn't seem like much but then you open the door and the fun begins.
Some of the paintings and pictures caught my eye right away, the whimsy made me laugh and that probably made me want to eat even more.
Then I saw the Godzilla challenge. I love a good food challenge and 15 + years ago I would have destroyed the Godzilla challenge but I settled for the XL 2 meat option.
We were ushered in and down towards the end. Then Tory was our server and was very nice and friendly, and not just because she knew what to do when I showed her the free Mochi desserts plate offer when you check in with Yelp, and not because she offered us free sake shots (The flavor was a Fuji apple flavor dangerous because it was delicious and like drinking candy, smooth and wonderful).
Tory explained the menu and answered questions about the sauces and broths, and started our hot bowls. She explained that their broth was different from other places and not filled with sodium, soy, etc. and that you had to put in some of the flavors from the bottles they put on the table for you to help build up the flavors.
We got the edamame starter and that garlic flavor made it the best edamame I have had.
I picked the kombu seaweed dashi for my broth, I mixed in 3 oils/flavors from the 5 choices and I loved it.
I picked the white rice and Udon noodles, carrots, enoki mushrooms (YUM), and Shitake mushrooms, Wagyu short rib, and prime short rib is what they delivered but I ordered the angus ribeye (What came out was better and maybe they did that because the XL was $34 so they gave better meat). I was not complaining.
The fun is putting your items in the hot pot, cooking them, fishing them out, and eating the warm, delicious, made by you food.
The dipping sauces add a little something extra but the meats are good without them too.
They had the finals nba game on, and loud music, so it was hard to hear the person 2 down from you. That is the reason for 4 stars. I didn't like the seating arrangement.
Shabu Shabu should be more of a family style / sit at a table / converse with your whole party, not spaced out along a bar.
The food, and the service (Tory), were all outstanding. I just didn't like the seating layout.
If you are craving shabu shabu, and in the area, definitely worth stopping in. They also have a happy hour before 6, which we missed, but I think it is 20% off.
