Tabú Review - Williamsburg - New York - The Infatuation

"Tabú didn’t have to make their food delicious. The Tulum-themed Williamsburg spot could have just relied on their huge outdoor area covered with parasols, a DJ stand with its own water-feature as a backdrop, and their excellent cocktails to bring people in the door. But the food is good, bordering on great—making this a clubstaurant that’s as exciting on a Wednesday as it is on Saturday. On any of those evenings, you’ll find dancers in flowy costumes flitting between the fronded plants and two stone bars. And while we wouldn’t be surprised if the owners seriously considered filling the courtyard in with white sand at some point, there’s plenty of attention to detail in the seafood-oriented kitchen too. Tabú serves mostly smaller portioned food, so order a bunch of things, including a couple of tacos, a raw fish dish or two, and some stellar chips and guacamole. photo credit: Alex Staniloff photo credit: Alex Staniloff photo credit: Alex Staniloff Several cocktails come in vessels that could only loosely be defined as glassware, but they’re highly drinkable—and Tabú is the kind of place where you’ll want to try a few. Come here for a loose evening. Just keep in mind that although the floaty beach-club music is loud enough to sway to, the restaurant is on a quiet side street, and the outdoor area closes by 11pm. Food Rundown photo credit: Gustavo Centeno Lobaina Cocktails If you've come to Tabù on a Wednesday with the goal of not drinking until the weekend, best of luck. Their margaritas, frozen cocktails, and palomas are great, but you should branch out and try the more interesting options on their Originals menu. We love the soft and smooth Maiz Magico, as well as the punchy, smoky and sweet Ritual Sagrado. Did we mention the fun glassware? photo credit: Alex Staniloff Guacamole The simple, clean-tasting guacamole here should be on your table, especially if you’re just dropping in for drinks. Prepare to load up each of your three crispy fried tortilla rounds with a good scoop of it though, or you’ll be left with more dip than chip. photo credit: Will Hartman Beef Tostada If you’re partial to raw beef, this tostada is non-negotiable. The diced meat has a silky texture, and the underlying notes of chilis, corn, and coriander are delicate, but not muted. photo credit: Alex Staniloff Salsas and Totopos There are some nice flavors here—the pasilla is smoky and sweet, the crudo is refreshing, and we’d really like to try the tomatillo basil salsa on a pizza—but stick to the guacamole for a more consistent starter. photo credit: Will Hartman Fish Tempura Tacos These are the tacos to get at Tabú. Lightly fried tilefish in a puffy yet crunchy batter, served with slivered carrots and cabbage, and tartar sauce, they’re drippy, messy, and delicious. photo credit: Alex Staniloff Lamb Tacos For meat tacos, these are the way to go. Grassy, greasy with lamb fat, and cut with some sharp yogurt, they’re a satisfying bite. photo credit: Alex Staniloff Duck Carnitas Sope The sope is fluffy, the duck is smothered in a warm mole, and while we’re not sure the dish needed crema, this is a great starter, especially alongside a raw fish or beef dish." - Will Hartman

Hi so I’ve been here twice and each time the service was excellent. The first time was for a birthday dinner with a group of 7 and they were accommodating and very attentive. You can also taste the food is very authentic you feel like you’re really eating food from somebodies auntie that everyone talk about. The second time I was there my server Isabelle was very nice and helped me narrow done some choices which was very helpful. When I came for the birthday dinner the birthday girl decided based on atmosphere alone and the exceeded expectations. The bartender is great as well, they have a very well stocked bar and the bartender is very experienced. Highly recommend will be back soon.

New executive chef & new menu! Walked in on a Friday around 4:30 and opted to sit outside at the bar. Ended up trying 4 of their margs and they're tasty as hell (mango, tamarind, passion fruit, and kiwi). Liked Passion fruit and mango the best but they were all so solid. Shoutout to Lee - great bartender and even funnier guy. Smoke in the box tequila made our evening! For food, I got the salsa flight. Do it! Some of 5 of the best salsas I ever had. They refilled my chips also when requested (chips are homemade and soo good). The chef came out and spoke with us for 20 min and gave me a house tortilla to try (it was amazing). Will definitely be coming back for dinner, I want to try their outdoor raw bar and the new seafood menu. Must be said - the space is gorgeous and they have vibey music playing @ 80 decibels. Great date night spot especially during dusk

20/10 experience! We went on a Thursday night for dinner and did the tasting menu. It was WORTH. EVERY. PENNY. The special cocktail (raspberry and peach with tequila) was beyond delicious, the food was phenomenal from start to finish, and the service was impeccable. Carlos was our main server, and he was absolutely amazing. He was so knowledgeable, made sure to cater to our dietary needs, and truly made our meal an experience to be remembered forever. He said he’s been doing this for 21 years, and his passion for food and excellent service truly shows. He even refused to accept the additional tip we tried to give him although he deserved so much more than the 20% auto-gratuity. This fine dining experience truly blew us away and we will definitely be back.

WE GOT RIPPED OFF. Soulless food, awful service, and tasteless decoration of the valentines. We went on Valentine’s Day, and they served four-course meals for $120 + tax for each person. First, the service was slow and with a bad attitude. Second, everyone who works there walks so fast that it feels like they have to rush somewhere, and the servers and managers keep bumping into my chair because they are rushing for no reason. Third, they had to keep opening the door, which let the wind blow in the whole time (and it was cold!). After sitting down for 40 minutes, we only had one dish. The first two dishes were both super small portions and cold, and after the main course (the third dish), the dessert came up when I started to feel ready to eat. I left the restaurant still feeling hungry, and I usually don't eat that much! To make it feel like Valentine's Day, they decorated the whole thing with tasteless pink balloons and hired a saxophonist to improvise on boring pop music in the background. The whole dinner should have been priced around $38, not $120—it was a terrible experience while still hungry. I'll definitely not go back.

Went for brunch and everything was delicious! The decor transported me straight to Mexico, creating an authentic and vibrant atmosphere. Highly recommend the French toast—it’s a must-try. While you’re obviously there for the Mexican dishes, share the French toast with the table—you won’t regret it. The guacamole and aguachile were also fantastic. I had the agua de Jamaica to drink, and it was pretty good. As the place filled up, it did get a bit loud, but the lively music added to the energetic vibe. Definitely worth a visit!

The place is beautiful, but way smaller than it looks on social media, I went a Saturday and no shows at all were presented that night, bad choice being a Valentine’s Day weekend… The service was lame, it seemed it was a bad for the host, not the type of warm welcome you expect from a place like this. The drinks were delicious, I think they saved the night with the music. The food was good, the birria tacos were tasty, the guac needed like a kick of flavor, not bad but not outstanding. Also we ordered something called Tlayuda, and I had mix feelings with it, I love the combination of sweet and salty ingredients, but black beans with melon uhmmm I don’t think so… In general was a good experience but definitely I’m not coming back.

Made reservations to celebrate my birthday and my boyfriend birthday. The reviews looked well so we booked. As we walked in we were not greeted i had to ask about seating. We sat for about 25 - 30 mins without being serviced. I guess the manager of the restaurant took our drink order and we ordered an appetizer that also took another 15 mins seems like none of the staff wanted to service us. We received our water down drinks and i think that was our queue to leave. I told the manager to forget the appetizer which was guacamole and chips he seems bothered and quickly printed the receipt and gave us the check. $51 dollars for two drinks and sparkling water. Worst service i ever received will not recommend will not return. Menu is very minimal and we was also told what wasn’t available like what. Such a turn off. This place doesn’t offer an elevated experience.
