Tachibana in McLean is a hidden gem cherished by locals and sushi enthusiasts alike. Nestled in an unassuming brick building on the outskirts of West McLean, this restaurant offers an authentic and delightful Japanese dining experience that keeps patrons coming back for more.
My party of four arrived on a Wednesday around 1pm. Despite the restaurant being mostly full, we were seated immediately by our hostess, who spoke fluent English and Japanese, adding to the authentic vibe. The interior is deceptively spacious, featuring a central kitchen where sushi chefs, clad in white hats and black aprons, skillfully slice colorful pieces of fish. The decor is tastefully traditional, with Japanese art and wooden furniture creating a cozy ambiance. Whiteboards listing daily specials line the walls, and the clientele--a mix of business lunch-goers and older Asian diners--further attests to the restaurant's authenticity. Another plus: they offer hot green tea!
The menu at Tachibana is extensive, catering to a variety of tastes with classic nigiri, sashimi, and rolls, as well as Japanese appetizers, noodle dishes, and hot entrees. Their lunch specials are particularly enticing, with sushi and sashimi combinations, bento boxes, and rice bowls, all served with miso soup and rice, and priced between $17 and $27.
We began our meal with a plate of Vegetable Tempura ($7.5) to share. The dish featured six pieces of expertly fried tempura, including broccoli, sweet potato, zucchini, and carrots. The batter was light, airy, and well-seasoned, allowing the fresh flavor of the vegetables to shine through without being too greasy.
One member of our party ordered the Oyakodon Lunch Special ($17), which included a generous portion of tender chicken, egg, onion, and scallions simmered in a sweet soy sauce over rice. Another opted for the Sushi B Lunch Special ($21.5), which comprised an assortment of high-quality nigiri--Tuna, Bronzino, Yellowtail, Shrimp, Salmon, Eel, Albacore--and a choice of roll (Tuna, Spicy Tuna, or Hamanegi/Yellowtail). This was a fantastic value, with ample portions and great variety.
Our vegetarian companion selected three different vegetarian rolls (6 pieces per order, $5/order). Often, vegetarian rolls can be an afterthought, but she found these to be flavorful and fresh. I chose the Sashimi Lunch Special, which included 3-4 pieces each of Tuna, Salmon, White Fish, and Seared Tuna, accompanied by a "Special Cucumber Cup" (cucumbers in rice vinegar). The quality of the fish was impressive, and the miso soup on the side was savory and rich, with just the right amount of fresh green onions and silken tofu. It's rare to find such a satisfying sashimi lunch for under $30, and this really hit the spot.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Tachibana. Despite being slightly out of the way, the restaurant offers affordably priced lunch options, generous portions, and tasty dishes. Service was friendly, if not the fastest, but the quality of the food and the welcoming atmosphere made it well worth the visit. Tachibana is undoubtedly one of the best spots for sushi in Northern Virginia, and I look forward to returning to explore more of their menu.
