Best Tacos in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"This cute little taco shop, with its fancy backbar and mural of Frida Kahlo, also offers real-deal tacos. Monterrey-born chef Suny Santana — with backup from his chef-partner Aaron Chamberlin — turns out nine different options, each served on a handmade corn tortilla (or flour tortilla in the case of the carne asada-filled Sonoran) with a slice of cucumber and wedge of lime. Choose among such outstanding selections as juicy barbacoa and the costra (carne asada with caramelized cheese and caramelized onion). Don’t miss the fabulous carnitas, made from pork shoulder and pork belly cooked in their own juices (along with a bit of spices, orange and beer), until the meat achieves sticky unctuousness." - McConnell Quinn

Taco Chelo - Review - Downtown - Phoenix - The Infatuation

"The move at Taco Chelo is to go with a bunch of people and order practically one of everything. Start with the crispy rolled tacos and snappy chicharrones before going all-in on the beef barbacoa tacos or beer-battered fish tacos. Add a round of drinks for the table and take advantage of those Happy Hour prices, $9 margaritas and $15 buckets of beer. While chilling on the patio with your beverages, watch the art walk crowds buzz by on their way to First Friday." - Lauren Topor

Google
Taco Chelo in downtown Phoenix is officially on my top taco spots list! I had both the shrimp tacos and the carne asada tacos and let me just say, they nailed it. The shrimp tacos were different in the best way bold flavor, a little twist I didn’t expect, but really enjoyed. And the asada? Juicy, seasoned just right, and full of flavor. But the real MVP? Their handmade tortillas. You can taste the difference. Fresh, soft, and they tie everything together perfectly. There’s no shortage of taco spots in Phoenix, but Taco Chelo stands out not just for the food, but for the vibe. You can tell it’s got that local, family-run heart behind it. And as someone who supports mom-and-pop businesses any chance I get, this place hit home. I’ll definitely be back and bringing people with me.

Went here for dinner one evening and got here just a little after 5pm. We were able to take advantage of the Happy Hour Menu and the tacos and some of the drinks were on special. We sat outside as all of the tables inside were taken and there was plenty of patio seating and the misters were on helping cool us down as it was a fairly warm day in Phoenix, about 90F. Food was excellent and service was good. The dessert was really nice too!

Google
Taco Chelo was a nice experience, I had the carnitas taco and my wife had an asada taco. They were both good, the salsas were lacking some flavor in my opinion. Even tried their new hotter one and didn’t think the kick was very much. Not sure I’d seek this place out but wouldn’t be sad if I was in the area and we ended up here. The service was friendly, real small place so had to sit outside in a lot of heat had misters at least. Bathroom is down an outdoor walkway and need a key just an FYI.

Google
I'm actually surprised I've never stopped by this place cuz the smell alone when walking past it is incredible. They have a really good selection for happy hour, tacos and drinks. Their carnitas is absolutely delicious. I also tried their veggie taco and it is really good. I'd 100% recommend this place.

Google
Absolutely love Love Taco Chelo, I came in for Taco Tuesday after hearing all the hype. Very delicious tacos, I had the Sonoran tacos and Frejoles a la Charra. The tacos were delicious the meat was perfect and the toppings were on point. The tortillas were amazing and the beans were amazing! I will definitely be back to try everything on the menu! The restaurant has been here for 7 years. It’s family owned by locals! The family is very friendly and they know what they’re doing! The family is originally from Monterey. I’m telling all my friends and family about this location!

I come here and bring Colleagues for lunch and everyone ends up loving this place. All The food is flavorful. My favorite are the shrimp and fish tacos . The aguas Frescas are refreshing as well .

Google
Interesting experience. My fish taco was tasty, but a platter of fried zucchini with 2 dips plus pickled and slightly spicy other mixed veggies was even better.

Google
I loved dining in at Taco Chelo! We had crispy shrimp tacos, fish tacos, barbacoa tacos and suny burrito and they were all super tasty 😋 the servers continued to check up on us to see if we needed anything and cleared the table for us. I would 10/10 recommend this place!!

Yelp
First time here! Parking was easy - we came on a Saturday night around 6pm. It was busy but not too busy! Parallel parking on the street - it was super easy to pay with credit card. Menus were available right when you walked in. We ordered at the counter. It was happy hour yay! I ordered one carne asada taco and one chicken taco (this was on their HH menu). My friend ordered 3 carnitas tacos (HH many). We also got an order of chips and guac and we each had a house margarita (all were on the HH menu). We sat ourselves helped ourselves to water cups. The bathroom is outside around the corner and you'll need to ask for a key. It was clean. Food came quickly! And overall - very delicious! Chips & guac - chips were fresh and crunchy and perfectly salted. Good amount of chips provided for the cost. Guac was a very small serving. It was average tasting. It came either this green spicy sauce - super yummy (I put some on my tacos too). It also came either this other dark red sauce but I didn't try it. It could be something Smokey) My carne asada taco was muy bueno!! So so good. And I'm a carne asada taco snob. I would totally come back and eat 10 of these in one sitting. My chicken taco was also very good. The meat was tender and very flavorful. I'm often hesitant to eat chicken tacos at new places I'm trying bc the meat can sometimes be dry. But not this place!!! Chicken tacos were great!! Overall great experience!

Yelp
"QUALITY & AUTHENTIC - PHXS BEST TACO!" -Service is quick -customer service is amazing I ordered the Devils Mess Burrito. A revolutionary piece of art! Presentation is beautiful and eats well. Crispy, soft, creamy, cooked to perfection! Green salsa is to die for!!! Red salsa is good but wow they have two green salsas that are different and taste like SALSA HEVEAN!!! The black salsa is roasted, and the flavor is deep and rich, and it's developed perfectly ! If you mix all the salsa together, it creates an unreal experience!!! This place continues to impress me ! I loved the burrito and the price is justified! I will be back!!!

Yelp
Can't get enough of this place. You have to check out Taco Chelo if you're in Rosevelt District. The costra taco and the michelada are a must! Love this spot for lunch, always consistent with the quality and flavor. The pricing is also pretty reasonable considering where it is situated and the fact that it's so popular. Anything you try will not disappoint! Love their salsas that they serve with the chips and salsa appetizer. The atmosphere is inviting and modern, you have to try patio seating if the weather is nice!

Yelp
Had to update my review to say that Taco Chelo remains a solid and consistent place to get great authentic tacos. Their fish tacos are still my favorite!
google avatar

Brent B.

Yelp
This place makes some pretty good tacos, of the three i had I enjoyed the sonoran taco the best. the vibe is casual, you order at the counter and find a table. I didn't have a cocktail but they looked good! I enjoyed setting outside, it's a vibrant area, thanks!

Yelp
Wandered in here while walking around the Roosevelt Row area on a lovely Friday afternoon. When we went up to order, we were told about their happy hour specials (Score!!) so we went that route. We had chicken tacos, beef taquitos, and barbacoa tacos. Everything was fresh and tasty! The corn tortillas had a very homemade look and taste. Servers were very sweet and the patio was wonderful (in late November ). One heads-up... the key to the bathroom is on the left inside the back door of the chicken & rib place when you go down the alley
google avatar

Yelp
Would give more than 5 stars if I could. SO GOOD. Every taco we tried was so flavorful and delicious, and the tortillas were the best I've ever had. The happy hour spicy marg was also perfect. An amazing meal before the suns game. Cannot wait to be back here to try out more of the tacos.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is such a vibe. The prices are affordable and the food is delicious and it's a nice walking spot to look around Roosevelt row .
google avatar

Yelp
Really cool vibe with great tacos, guacamole and simple and delicious ceviche that's super fresh. Many visits here and it's always spot on.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious food with a chill ambience. I ordered barbacoa tacos, costra tacos, a barbacoa quesadilla, a horchata, and rice and beans. You can tell that everything is handmade and made with love. My favorite things were the horchata (it is made to order and delicious!) and the costra tacos (the crispy cheese on top make it a stand out item). I found the quesadillas to be a bit small and greasy for the price, so I would most likely skip those next time. Other than that, everything was incredible and I can't wait to come back soon!
google avatar

Ruth L.

Yelp
I gave four stars because I truly love my spicy Picoso Margarita. Bartender Genesis was awesome. Food-- well the chips were prepackaged in containers and they were stale. Ehhh. I'll drink there- happily.
google avatar

Alyssa B.

Yelp
They never miss, food and service are consistently good every single time and I've been here an embarrassingly amount of times. Their most underrated is the bean burrito with carne asada. Best micheladas I've ever had too

Yelp
This is my favorite place to get Tacos in Downtown Phoenix. There are many options on the menu and tons of opportunities to mix and match. Individual tacos are a little bit pricey. The Chips and Salsa are also pricey, and the portions are small. If you go, you need to dine in. There are great options to dine indoors and eat on the patio. This is a great experience if you are in the area for an event.

Yelp
Taco Chelo is an awesome vibrant taco joint in downtown phoenix in the heart of Roosevelt Row! They serve up classic and more unique tacos, along with a variety of salads, tortas, and botanas. The interior is super colorful and they have a great outdoor patio. In the restaurant you see them making their homemade corn tortillas!! Love this spot for taco tuesday, happy hour, or for a casual hangout with friends! The service is great, very efficient and food comes out quickly. Got to try several of their tacos all of which I loved. Tried the costra taco and fish taco both of which were great. The costra was so savory and rich with the caramelized onions and cheese and the fish taco was one of the best I've had in the valley! Also got their spicy margarita which was perfectly strong and not too sour or artificial tasting. Definitely recommend this spot!

Yelp
*went to Tempe location* Great atmosphere, very chill vibes. Wait in line and order your food, they give you a number and bring your food to the table. Saw this place on instagram last night and decided to check it out today. Great flavors, but prefer flour tortilla over corn

Yelp
Now these tacos are nothing like San Diego (or Mexico), but for Arizona, I would say these are top tier. My boyfriend told me that the tortillas are freshly made by hand, and they are near perfect -- so good! He ordered a chicken and two carnitas tacos, I got a fish, carnitas and barbacoa taco, and we got the chicharrones. I will say that the tacos were very oily, as in dripping, but that also adds some flavor. The fish taco, which also had a rich crema, and the barbacoa tacos were my favorite. The carnitas taco was also tasty, but I had a lot of fat pieces, which my boyfriend is more a fan of. The chicharrones had a kick to them, but were so crunchy and delicious. We each had a Jarritos to drink, but their beverages sounded enticing. We also sat outside since it was so nice out, but I would like to dine in because the establishment looks cute. It is a pretty open and inviting space. I definitely want to come back and try other food on the menu, as well as come back for the chicharrones.

Yelp
UNDERRATED! This place is so delicious! Crispy shrimp tacos and horchata are my favorite! The salsa that comes with chips is so delicious! I now find myself coming here weekly!

Yelp
Always consistently delicious and speedy service! Love the GF/DF options. Fresh ingredients and guac. Great indoor and outdoor space even when it's smoking hot outside.

Yelp
Ambiance (5/5): There is plenty indoor and outdoor dining available. There's also a takeout pick up by the bar. I loved the decor on the inside and vibrant vibes. Service (N/A): Countertop ordering and then they bring out the food to you by assigned numbers after ordering. The food does not come out at the same time. My initial order was wrong and caused delay. Fish (5/5): the battered fish taco tasted great with the white sauce giving it a creaminess to the bite. Carnitas (4/5): I've had better carnitas elsewhere as it needed more spices in the flavor. It was a smidge too dry for me but overall still a good taco. The tortillas can be subbed for flour!

Yelp
I got lucky and got parking right on the side. There is seating inside and outside. The carne asada taco was really good. The chips and salsa were stale but and not worth it. I would definitely could back and try some other tacos. The servers were really sweet.
google avatar

Claris B.

Yelp
Great place to grab lunch, was lucky to grab a parking spot. Not too loud, you can eat in peace and the food is good.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing food and service. The drinks were delicious and strong. Very cute decor, music was catchy. Great little place to escape to.

Yelp
I love this place! I was craving tacos for taco Tuesday, so i walked over and ordered some to go. $1 off the chicken and carnitas tacos and they have happy hour all day. I love the vibe here, and they have a great patio. The corn tortillas are homemade and to die for. The meat is so flavorful. I only had to wait a few minutes for my to go order and off i went.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Friendly staff and the set up with the patio was nice. The torta with chorizo was great, but the shrimp were my favorite. The barbacoa was good, but not for everyone. Drink choices were good and well made. A nice place to catch some rays and chow tacos!
google avatar

Rebekah H.

Yelp
I met some friends at Taco Chelo for girls night. First, I tried the house margarita with peach. It was a great balance of sweet and slightly tart. Next I had a Fridarita (frozen margarita with prickly pair float she tajin rim) and that was a perfect summer drink for sipping on the patio. Quesadillas were a great complement to the cocktails. The red salsa had the perfect amount of heat and flavor. Service was excellent, and everyone's order was brought out quickly.
google avatar

Brandon W.

Yelp
This was place was one of my favorite taco shops to go to. The carne asada taco was the best. The margarita was so good made by Sara. The service was excellent, Salem, Cynthia, and Betsy made it a great experience.
google avatar

Gretel Y.

Yelp
Found myself near Taco Chelo, so I decided to get dinner to-go. Placed an order at the counter. If fish tacos are on the menu, I will almost always order it. Theirs sounded great, so I ordered three of them and a vegetable quesadilla. Within minutes, my order was ready. The fish tacos were excellent! They came with with beer battered fish, cabbage, pickled onion, chile morita crema, and pico de gallo. Flavors were on point and the fish was cooked well. The quesadilla was yummy, too, but the tacos were definitely the star of the show. Service was pleasant and quick. The space is fun and vibrant. I would definitely return here if I'm back in the area.

Yelp
Ok, so we stayed in Phoenix one night after a cardinals game. Was trying to decide between here and taco boys but I just CANNOT pass up a torta. Once I realized you can switch the meat it was game on. We got our order to go...2 tortas, both with chicken, and an order of chips and dips (salsa and guacamole). When we got back to our room I took my first bite and there was a wire in my sandwich! Ugh! BUT...but...The sandwich was so flavorful...I excused it. That's huge bc usually I would have called, not ate the sandwich, etc. But when I was there I could see the kitchen and the facility and it was clean. I kinda assume the wire was something holding the chicken while it was being grilled. I can't believe I didn't complain but...oh well. The food was super yummy, staff nice, facility was clean, prices reasonable. So the dock of a star is obviously for the wire. Chicken tasted like it was fresh off the grill, guac was perfectly seasoned, and the red salsa had a smoky flavor to it that I was totally feeling. All in all...I'd recommend and would return.

Yelp
Came here after work with a couple of coworkers, it's a very small space. We were able to find seating at the bar. The asada taco was tasty and hit the spot. My coworkers said the drinks were very good. I would definitely visit again.
google avatar

Hannah R.

Yelp
Tacos are good for a treat yo self moment! Love the decorations in here and how you can see everything they are cooking up in the back! Especially being able to watch them cook the fresh tortillas! Bar is tiny, as well as limited indoor seating. Peak hours it is best to do a to-go order. Al Pastor is my favorite. I do love how they carry my favorite tequila Centenario! Tacos are a bit pricey however in downtown you get what you get and gotta try it at least once!
google avatar

Cynthia G.

Yelp
Super enjoyed this place during our visit to Az. Such a fun vibe , great music, great staff. Our food and drinks were fantastic! I'm not a vegetarian but tried their vegetarian taco and man I Super enjoy it! The sweet potatoes were amazing with all the different toppings! Absolutely impressed which is hard to do! The hand man tortillas were amazing as well. We also ordered a fish taco, their costra tacos as well. Everything was on point! Definitely the one food I'll remember during our trip. Felicidades!
google avatar

Ellie B.

Yelp
Best tacos I have ever had in my life! We started our meal with a margarita and a corona along with the chips, salsa, and guacamole. The guacamole was great, the salsas were not your typical restaurant salsa, they were gourmet salsas with unique flavor. We had a cheese quesadilla with chicken, chicken tacos with corn tortillas, and carnitas tacos with corn tortillas. The chicken tacos were amazing, I still think about them. The quesadilla with chicken was great as well while the carnitas tacos were bland. The restaurant was very vibrant and bright! Super excited to go back and get a margarita and chicken tacos!

Yelp
I'm always in the mood for tacos! I was in the Roosevelt area and thankfully came across Taco Chelo! Based on the long line that followed me ordering on a random Wednesday evening, the community clearly loves them! I am slowly working my way through all the tacos in the valley, and Taco Chelo has some of the best tacos I've had! Generous toppings on these larger street tacos with tons of flavor, they've hit the mark every time. I haven't had all their tacos, they have quite a few varieties, but the chicken, carne asada, fish and veggie are all delicious. I love some good spice, but my counterpart and few of my friends do not share the same sentiment. They did hint that the flavors lean towards the spicer side, for those who feel similar. I'm sure it's not that way with all their tacos, but something to inquire if your share the same palette! I wish I had paid more attention to the the other menu offerings,, but had my eyes set in tacos. I did see burritos and some other standard Mexican fare offerings. It's a fun and lively atmosphere for a quick drink or meal. They offer counter service with quick delivery. Plenty of indoor tables and ample patio seating! I look forward to coming back and trying some of their cocktails and other menu items Definitely worth a stop if your craving Mexican! On parking - I don't believe they have their own parking, as most of Roosevelt Row, so Roward to search for street parking, most of it metered, but some free spots in the area!
google avatar

Cyrus A.

Yelp
Delicious tacos! We tried the carne asada, barbacoa, and chicken - all were packed with fresh ingredients and lots of meat. Ordering can be a little chaotic when there's a line inside, but service was great once the tacos made it to our table. The margaritas were just okay, but it's the relatively quick service and big servings that make Taco Chelo a good choice for a filling taco meal.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
Probably one of the best taco joints in Phoenix! Great service, It's loud with indoor and outdoor seating and Mango Margaritas! Definitely worth the stop!

Tamir M.

Yelp
Taco chelo is always a yes for me. The fresh food and flavors along with great portions of food for the price. Anytime I have friends visit from out of town, we stop by and they are blown away at the food. The service is always nice and timely even if they are busy.
google avatar

Jose B.

Yelp
The absolute BEST freaking tacos I've ever eaten. Period!! The atmosphere was perfect for a date or lunch with your bro. Ate at the bar and the bartender (I believe her name was Maria) did an outstanding job. I WILL BE BACK!!!
google avatar

Soneya S.

Yelp
I came here after hiking and the tacos hit the spot! You order at the front, and find a seat inside or outside patio and they bring over the food and drinks to you! I ordered the following tacos: 10/10 for each! Beef Birria Chicken Carne Asada Love each and every one of the tacos! Also, ordered chips with guacamole and salsa. They provide two different salsas and guacamole. Everything was delicious and would def recommend!
google avatar

Ali B.

Yelp
I love a good Mexican meal especially when there's a "fancier" vegetarian option! I got two veggie tacos and the special which was rolled crispy sweet potato tacos. My husband and I shared the chips salsa and guac. You order at the counter and they bring it to you! My husband got carne asada tacos. Secure was incredibly fast and they were super nice here. Decor is cute and trendy too. The food was excellent! Loved the sweet potato in the veggie tacos especially. My husband liked his tacos too. Chip portion is a bit small but it does come with guac so that makes up for it. Pricing is not bad. Would for sure come back!
google avatar

Lindsey H.

Yelp
Food is exceptional, especially the taco chelo salad. Ingredients are so fresh and tasty. I'll think about this salad when I'm home for sure. Drinks were good and came out quickly. Service was a little bit slow for our large party but food was run out super fast and was hot. Would 100% come here again, but maybe not with a large group.
google avatar

Mia J.

Yelp
So yummy and affordable!! Best taco here is the shrimp or carne asada. Super cute interior and great service.
google avatar

Naomi V.

Yelp
One of my favorite Mexican restaurants. The food here is authentic and so good! You can see the kitchen and everyone working hard cooking it up. Horchata is really good here. Everything on the menu that we've tried so far has been outstanding. Reasonable prices for everything. Good service, really cool aesthetic inside and outside. I think my favorite menu item so far is the Flamingo appetizer!
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
There is no shortage of taco options in Downtown Phoenix, and I am glad I finally had the chance to stop by here for an early dinner before a concert. This place is conveniently located on Roosevelt Row, and a short walk from the ASU campus. Since I came on a Wednesday, I opted for 2 carnitas and 1 al pastor taco (my little sister went for 2 carne asada, 2 sonoran and my friend opted for 1 fish, 1 sonoran). The carnitas were my personal favorite. They were greasier than my typical carnitas tacos, but they were flavorful and the texture was just right. The al pastor was a bit too tough and flavorless for my taste, though. My sister said her carne asada tacos were dry but the sonoran tacos made up for it. The jamaica was sweet with a hint of tartness (as expected), the horchata was a bit too sweet, and the mexican coke was as it always is. While we dropped by during happy hour, I was a little surprised that I didn't see any of the guests going for their $5 cocktails. The service was friendly, and fast.
google avatar

Trevi B.

Yelp
Really good taco spot in Phoenix. I tried four different tacos all were yummy. I loved how creative they got with the margaritas. Good quick service. Loved the decor very colorful and beautiful bar set up.
google avatar

Ben S.

Yelp
I live on 7th & Roosevelt. This is absolutely the best taco spot in Evan's Churchill. Everything I've gotten from here is awesome, I don't understand why anyone would go to the much lower quality spots of taco boys or taco calafia, it makes zero sense lol, everything at Taco Chelo is better. Special shoutout to the Flamingo, it's huge and absolutely delicious. The vibe here is chill and well curated. And the prices are basically the same as all the other spots with significantly better quality.
google avatar

Srujana M.

Yelp
Taquero Mucho is a decent spot for tacos; while I won't describe them as amazing, I tried the fish taco. The torta, however, had an average taste. Despite the nice ambience and seating, the overall flavor was mediocre. We appreciated the vibe and service, but I wouldn't recommend it solely based on taste.
google avatar

Stanley W.

Yelp
Great tacos, even better guava marg! I couldnt leave arizona without having some proper mexican food so stopping here was a must. I even took a waymo here, how cool was that? I got the al pastor taco and the barbacoa taco. The corn tortilla, warm and slightly charred, provides the ideal canvas for this masterpiece. Topped with fresh cilantro, onions, and a squeeze of lime, it's a fiesta of textures and tastes. Each bite is a celebration, a fiesta for your senses. The Al Pastor taco isn't just a dish; it's a flavor-packed fiesta you'll crave endlessly! Vibrant colors adorn the walls, and the air is filled with the rhythmic beats of mariachi music. Warm smiles and the aroma of sizzling spices create an inviting atmosphere. It's a festive haven where every meal becomes a joyous celebration.
google avatar

Jasmine W.

Yelp
Decent tacos. Better vibe. Good music. Definitely a hipster spot. The bathroom situation is weird as hell it's like down an alley and you need a key. I'd rate the tacos 3.5/5.
google avatar

Shanita F.

Yelp
I don't know which one was my favorite! All of it is so good. At the finish, and each taco, I think to myself, "yes, that was my favorite one." Then I bite into the next one. And then I say to myself, "no, THAT was my favorite one." So, basically all three are excellent choices. On Tuesdays they are very busy, as you could guess, and seating fills up quickly. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. The chips are also very good, and the salsa is a tad spicy, yum! They are very quick, so you won't wait long even if there is a line.
