The Best Breakfast Tacos in San Antonio | Bon Appétit

"Housed in a turquoise-trimmed midcentury building between downtown and the airport and run by second-generation owner Rose Leinen, this longtime neighborhood staple preserves recipes and standards passed down from Rose Mary Harper (who opened the place in 1992). While customers praise the cheese enchiladas and puffy tacos, the breakfast taco lineup is the standout—most famously the bean-and-cheese taco toasted on a flattop grill after the restaurant’s 30th anniversary, where a crisp flour tortilla provides the perfect contrast to oozing cheese and rich refried beans." - ByEdmund Tijerina

Google
Not my magic tortilla. But still good. For them the magic might be the chorizo and egg. Now of course it had grease, it's chorizo after all, but I've got to tell you there was hardly any and it definitely didn't run down my arm... this is number one for me. Now the tacos don't look cheap on the menu, but trust me you will get your money's worth in the filling. My friend got a corn tortilla and said they loved it.

Google
The pork meat was so tender and the carne guisada was delicious. Flour tortillas are made fresh. We will definitely be returning soon.

Flavor: A- Service: B Tea: B Solo dining: A What a great little Mexican food spot. I got the Mexican plate (even though it wasn’t Friday so I paid full price) and I was not disappointed. The cheese enchiladas were just like I like them with the perfect gravy. The taco, beans, rice, and tortillas were all great. And it’s a great value considering how much food you get. They took away the tea before closing time which I absolutely cannot stand so I can’t consider their tea or service A-level but all else left me eager to return.

Google
We went here after doing a search for a Taco House near me while running an errand. It was a great suggestion. Restaurant is very clean, was busy but had enough tables with no waiting. Service was fast, and the food was delicious. Tacos were packed, and it was all great tasting. Tortillas were fluffy and delicious. Tea and coffee were fresh. We will be making the trip to this Taco House from here on out.

Google
A San Antonio favorite. I love the food, and atmosphere. Service is always fast, and friendly. 10/10

Google
I drove by this place several times, and the parking lot was always full. So I decided to give this restaurant a try. Service is good from the time I place my to getting my tacos. The tortillas are made in-house and fresh, and hot. The tacos were delicious with generous portions of fajitas. Good tacos at a good price.

Google
Breakfast items, such as potatoes, are not seasoned. Eggs are also left unseasoned. They refuse to season the food as it's cooking. Cashier didn't really care if I was satisfied with their food service. Advertised home cooking, but it's doubtful they cook bland unseasoned food at home.

Google
First time here and got the puffy taco plate. Omg, it was so good!! Can't wait to try other items. Will definitely be returning.

Yelp
Food is really good here. All the workers are nice. We only come on the weekends and its always really busy but its worth it. It has always been clean in here.

Yelp
I was in the mood for nachos, so I decided to try this place out. The Deluxe Nachos came piled high, I had them hold the onions and tomatoes so your order may look a little different. I wasn't a big fan of their Picadio meat on the nachos, it's too grainy for my palette. The guacamole was spot on the chips were crispy and the plate was piled high! I couldn't finish it all. You walk up to the counter and place your order and then they call your number to pick it up. So basically self serve. They have a banner celebrating 30 years in business, so the place is a little older but not in bad shape. It's all wide open with big tables so you could come with a larger group and be ok. They do close at 2pm. So you have to come early.

Yelp
Legit old school delicious tacos! A true TexMex spot. Great people here and the BEST tortillas in the city! Every thing is good, from the tacos to the huevos rancheros to the Caldo to the Barbacoa, etc. Do yourself a favor and try it.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been going to Taco House for nearly thirty years and have never been disappointed. Their breakfast tacos are the best in town, their Mole is exquisite, and their nachos are unparalleled. Chips and salsa are the best; their tortillas are made in-house and gigantic! Everything is delicious. You cannot go wrong at Taco House!!! If there were more than 5 stars for a rating, I'd give it.
google avatar

Yelp
I love coming here. Their food is so fresh and authentic Tex-Mex. Their Barbacoa is not too greasy but not too lean it's just perfect. All the breakfast tacos are packed and the crispy tacos and their tostadas are the best. they're very crunchy and tasty and they're always filled with a lot of toppings like lettuce, tomato cheese, and onion. This is definitely a place you need to try if you haven't ever been here, it's always a little crowded but there's never really a wait you order your food and then you wait for them to call your number and then you go pick up your food and take it to your table. If you're in the area of San Pedro and Oblate area, I would definitely try this place out. It's amazing.

Yelp
I love this place. The chicken puffy tacos are my absolute favorite. The steak fajita salad use to come in a deep fried taco shell, but they've stopped doing that so I was a bit bummed. Please bring it back! They make their flour tortillas from scratch and they're fresh and freaking delicious. Parking can be a headache if you come during the weekend, if you do, I wish you luck, otherwise parking is okay during the weekdays. Always check their hours, because I've come here on a Sunday at 4 pm and they're closed already. The restaurant is a bit run down, there's only one bathroom for the men and woman so I would have to wait in line in a narrow hallway to wash my hands or use the restroom, but the food makes up for it. Food is always tasty here.

Yelp
Simply a good tortilla for any breakfast taco. I personally do like them a little thicker but they were delicious. Place is also very clean.

Yelp
I highly recommend this place if you have a chance to visit it. I have tried a handful of different taco places, but this one is the best one I've tried so far especially for the price. The only con about this place is the parking. There's not a lot parking spots so you may need to street park. All this to say the struggles for parking is 100% worth it. The tacos range from two dollars to four dollars and they are huge. I got two tacos for under five dollars and I left feeling stuffed. I got the bean and cheese taco and the egg and potato taco. The bean and cheese taco was good, but there was a lot of grease from the cheese. The egg and potato taco was amazing. It was flavored just right and the salsa (especially the red one) gave it a nice spice. There are a lot of dishes and variety of tacos to choose from and I will be back to try the tortas and the breakfast plates as well. The amount of food they give compared to the price is insane. I feel like I found a small gem in San Antonio. Service was not the best but the food definitely made up for it.

Yelp
TLDR: This is a hidden gem, go try it! My first 'puffy tacos' since moving to San Antonio! I feel like I've lost a (food) virginity, and in a most delicious way. I know that most people are fans of Henry's or Ray's Drive Inn, but I was told to skip these and visit the Taco House over on San Pedro Avenue. Turned out this was an old school Tex-Mex diner that's only open 7am-2pm. Everything from the beans/rice/tortilla to the pair of puffy tacos was delicious and made fresh to order. In fact, I had to let the puffy tacos sit for a little as they were really steaming when they came out. One was stuffed to bursting with shredded chicken, the other with ground beef. Both great, though the ground beef one really brought back some memories as it was mixed through with bits of potato. All around excellent! Definitely returning. This place scores a 5 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing away after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. Would be OK having a nosh here with Mother Mary. 3 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Joseph good. Would be OK having a beer here with Jesus' Dad. 2 out of 5 stars: Come-to-the-Apostles good. Meh. Wouldn't have my last supper here. 1 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Nobody good. I wouldn't have my penultimate supper here, either.

Yelp
I ordered the chilaquiles plate and it turn out more like migas but it had a great taste. The portion is big and filling. Great and fast service, the prices are fair. The place has a lot of tables and space to sit and dine comfortably. The flour tortillas are made in house and they are fluffy and delicious.
google avatar

Phillip M.

Yelp
Fast Fresh Clean It's not often you get all three is a taco house. The tortilla are made in house and you can taste and feel the difference. The service is fast and friendly and the serving is generous. Highly recommend! It's been here for decades Incase you were worried it might disappear.

Yelp
Fairly new in the area & came across this place ! I love the homemade tortillas & the size of the tacos

Yolanda G.

Yelp
DELECIOUS food all the time ! The food is freshly made . The taste of the food is absolutely perfect . This is the only restaurant that makes food that taste homemade ! Yummmmm
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
I heard so much about this place and decided to try it out on a small scale. My favorite taco is a carne guisada and heard it was really good here. Well.....the good..the tortilla was good...the meat was tender..but the flavor fell waaaay short. Not sure what spices they don't use but I was very dissapointed!!! Another bummer is the price..$5 for 1 taco...granted it was a good size but with no flavor in the meat..thumbs down.
google avatar

Christy S.

Yelp
The tacos are so delicious and FAT!! If you mormally eat two tacos you'll only need to buy one. I wish I would have taken to time to take a picture for yall. The tacos are a little on the expensive side but well worth it.

R R.

Yelp
Eat here just about every sat morning , food is great , go early gets busy sat with a line . But if u cold natured ac is blasting and carne guisada can be be little more tastier . Over all food is good
google avatar

Morgan M.

Yelp
First time here! No wonder they are celebrating 30 years. Food was super good. The biggest and best puffy taco I have eaten. Not greasy. It help together. They were busy but the food came out fast and hot. The portions are huge. I could only eat one of my two tacos.

Angela H.

Yelp
Don't get Menudo here they do not give you real limes and you have to go ask for cilantro. They only have fake lemon juice in those little packets available. Yuck they lost my business.

Yelp
I recently dined at the Taco House in San Antonio, and I must say, it was a delightful experience. The standout feature of this establishment has to be their breakfast tacos, which are some of the best I've had in the city. The flavors were perfectly balanced, and the ingredients tasted fresh and high-quality. The pricing was reasonable, considering the quality and portion sizes. If you're a breakfast taco enthusiast or simply looking for a tasty meal in San Antonio, I highly recommend giving the Taco House a try. It's a fantastic spot to start your day with a satisfying and flavorful meal.

None Of Your B.

Yelp
The service is shit and the food taste old this place is worst in customers service and the manager is very rude and take long to get your food. It worst place to eat .
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
Love taco house! Tacos are always good with a generous amount! My go to place for tacos!

Yelp
If you're visiting south Texas, even if it's just for a day, breakfast tacos are a must. I came in town to take care of family during Snowpocalypse 2021 and most businesses were understandably closed. I finally got my breakfast taco fix at Taco House, thanks to their super-quick drive-thru! Staff were friendly, menu and pricing are standard, but these tacos are STUFFED. I usually get two breakfast tacos to tide me over til the afternoon and easily one would have sufficed, they're so big. Eggs were fluffy, flour tortillas were thick and soft, and their carne guisada was SO good too. It's one of the true tragedies of life that breakfast tacos aren't a thing in Vegas, where I live now. So if you're reading this, go by and have a taco in my honor. TIP: They are no longer cash-only despite it being mentioned in many older reviews.

James C.

Yelp
Best Taco House in City.Tried practically all of them.Any Menu Item you get is great. The dining area is kept extremely clean all the time.Great place to take the family for home style cooking.
google avatar

Tee R.

Yelp
No photo because I was too busy salivating over the taco. I always prefer corn over flour any day. If you're going to eat there, take corn if not you'll have to go with flour because corn breaks apart and isn't good with the moisture. It wasn't busy on a Tuesday morning. The salsa bar had pics of course and a rojo and verde salsa. Both were good and the spice level was in point. I'd suggest minimum of two little containers per taco (trust me on this). I even purchased 2 flour tortillas to go. I want to make quesadillas later. The staff was polite. Service was quick.
google avatar

Juanita P.

Yelp
Best tacos around this area, I simply love taco house... tortillas are made fresh everyday and salsas are delicious. My favorite are their barbacoa on the weekend and menudo.
google avatar

Hope E.

Yelp
Love Taco House! They have the best barbacoa, and corn tortillas! This is my favorite go-to taco place on the weekends!

Richard S.

Yelp
Service is great taco's are amazing good one thing ask for receipt cause old register sometimes over charge!! Lunch special crispy enchiladas is excellent for the price with drink for$6.50 is the best. In the neighborhood nothing as good and price wise!!! The restaurant is always clean and packed workers are always happy working there.. I would recommend this restaurant to any of my friends and family members to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner..
google avatar

Yelp
My family and I love to meet there occasionally; food is great. We always have a party of 8 or more and always get asked for us "not to" move tables around. We manage to put them up against the wall so we are not in anyone's way, fire hazards, etc. We put tables back as well. This weekend we all went in and my brother asked first if we can put tables together, AFTER we were half way done another lady comes and tells us we aren't supposed to move tables! We all decided to find another place to meet for breakfast.

Yelp
Great food you can't really mess up when you order anything here. It's a good ol taco shop .
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
Huge fresh handmade delicious breakfast tacos and more! I'm in love with their Pico de Gallo. Creamy beans and fresh tortillas. Locally owned by really nice people. You order at the counter then go pick up when your number is called. Super clean and well managed. They take credit cards now.

NC G.

Yelp
Great tortillas and ingredients. Been coming here for years. Workers are very nice too.

Roger P.

Yelp
I would not even give them one star, horrible customer service, I also feel discriminated also. If the customer is not happy, you usually make it right for them, and these people wouldn't budge for nothing. I was told at the drive-through that they were closing, so how could I call back to let them know that my order was not satisfactory. If you're looking for bad customer service, this is place to go ! Just so everyone knows the taco salad that they were known for changed. $10.99 for a pound of ground beef, with salad tossed on it, and the Taco now of a small container of chips...smh
google avatar

Armando B.

Yelp
I visit Taco House at least once a week. They have incredible chicken caldo, delicious menudo, and my favorite lengua gorditas. There was a problem though. I ordered a Fiesta Plate. It comes with a beef fajita taco. The problem? The connective tissue was not removed. I could not eat it. I took this picture (because I was home),and showed it to a manager when I went back this Saturday. The response was, "That is the way the butcher delivers it.". I wasn't asking for a re-do, simply bringing the issue to their attention. The sign says, "Home Style Cooking". At my home, we take the time to remove the connective tissue before cooking fajitas. It will not stop me from going back, but will stop me from ordering a fajita taco.
google avatar

Adriana G.

Yelp
Really Good tacos!!! The tortillas are delicious!! 100% recommended !!! The salsas are yummy
google avatar

Crys M.

Yelp
I LOVE this place. I have been going there for more than 20 years. The food never disappoints. It is always hot and ready quickly with a smile.
google avatar

Russell N.

Yelp
This is a gem. One of the best Tex mex establishments in San Antonio, and that says a lot. I've been coming here since I was a kid and have since relocated but always come in when I visit, never lets you down. Classic bean and cheese, puffy tacos and fajita, in fact you can't go wrong. Whatever you order, it's going to rule.

Honest R.

Yelp
Best Puffy Tacos in town! They are HUGE! you won't regret getting the puffy taco or anything else because their food is so delicious. I get my puffy tacos ordered as "bean and cheese with Picadillo" so that way the beans prevent it from getting soggy on the long drive home.
google avatar

Gloria B.

Yelp
Great taco restaurant but also has plates. Do not order migas though. It was chips and hardly any egg. Corn tortillas were great! My husband had green enchiladas and those were good too. So its a good place just no miga plate !!!!
google avatar

Gill S.

Yelp
Its been over 10 years since Ive had a puffy taco. I remember having one from Taco Taco back in 2010 and dreamed about it ever since. I was back in San Antonio for cave dwelling and required to have a puffy taco. Looking at Taco Taco reviews, things have sadly gone downhill, so I was left with deciding where to go now. Its Sunday at 1:30PM and so many places are closed or super far away from the Botanical Gardens. I settled here, even though Henry's was touted as the best. It was still a 17 minute drive, but I was fortunate that there were no lines or wait for the food I ordered. I got one puffy barbacoa, fajita, and guacamole taco. The total was 17 dollars and I was a little concerned. Am I ordering more than I can eat?? Luckily my partner was there eat them with me. These tacos are legit! Its amazing that these don't feel too greasy but just right. I love the crunchiness of these tacos! You can hear the crunch sounds from a mile away! The veggies and cheese on top are a great way to get some refreshment from the richness of the grease and meat. The meat was probably the weakest part of the meal. It was good, but not amazing. Perhaps close to the end of the day the meat isnt as hot and fresh?? The guacamole is the best one of the three. Tastes just like guacamole that would be prepared table side. None of that prepackaged, play-dough tasting bullshit!
google avatar

Eugene L.

Yelp
I have passed by Taco House on many occasions but never gave it as much of a thought to eat here. That was until I noticed News 4 WOAI give them a Blue Plate Award. So I decided to stop here for breakfast tacos. I got a lemonade and two tacos, a chorizo and egg and a carne guisada. Both were very good. I will stop by here again to order the caldo. The news station showed a video clip of it and I was impressed. Remember the Chunky soup commercial with the slogan, "Soup so good, it eats like a meal."? Well the caldo served here would look like a meal. I'll try it next time we get a cold snap, hopefully nothing like the one we got last year with the snow.
google avatar

Corando S.

Yelp
Good puffy tacos and good regular tacos with many different kinds of meat. The menudo was good also.
google avatar

Fabiola H.

Yelp
I wish they would close later!! They have the best flautas, rice and beans in town.
google avatar

Octavia K.

Yelp
Best taco place in town. Tortilla is fluffy and soft. Picadillo taco is really good. Price is good. Repeated customer for over 20 years.
google avatar

Greshka P.

Yelp
WOW! You really NEED to try this place. Nothing fancy, no drinks. Order at the counter and wait to be called. Cafeteria style seating, and not a huge menu but OMG some of the best tacos I've ever had. My friends were on a mission to get puffy tacos. That's what we all agreed we were going to get. Well, I screwed up and got crispy tacos instead. I realized this late when I got my order. "UGH" I though, I don't like hard shell tacos... WRONG! I loved these. The tortilla is made there, the flavor is authentic and perfectly crispy. Chicken wasn't overly seasoned, and was not dry. Lettuce, tomato, and a bit of cheese. That's all there is to it. You can order guacamole on the side and add some of the sauces, like the green salsa. This had a bit of a kick without altering the taste of the taco. Now, let me tell you about the rice and refried beans this come with. Usually the rice on the side of these plates is bland, this rice was not. It was so flavorful, it became my favorite part of the meal. Mixed with the refried beans and the salad from the taco... I would go and order this as a meal all day long there. Absolutely delicious! They also give you fresh made soft tortillas on the side, in case you want to make your own burrito with the rice and refried beans, or maybe even create a "double decker" taco. Any way you eat this will be amazing! All this for less than $10 and some meals, depending on the day include an ice tea or soda. Again, you NEED to try this place!
google avatar

Ari R.

Yelp
Tiny parking lot, and a bit dirty. Smells good as soon as you walk in though. The line was long, but moved pretty quickly. They only take cash at the register, but they do have an ATM available. They called out order numbers in English and Spanish. I ordered the cheese enchiladas. There was a bit of a wait and they called the tickets in all kinds of order. 19, 22, 27, 24, 26. A bit strange. The food was just ok. Really greasy and heavy. The refried beans have a distinctive pork flavor. I took a few bites and was done with it. The tortillas were good.
google avatar

Tess H.

Yelp
What draws you to this restaurant? The lines of course. Long lines mean good food right? Empty parking lots n a hard pass? Use the analytical table on google to plan ahead because going at peak times will result in a long wait time. Is the wait worth it? Perhaps. I have convinced myself, without any evidence, that the owner or perhaps someone connected to the company is diabetic because the sweet tea comes unsweetened and the tacos are under seasoned. With that said, it's nothing that a little pepper and salt can't fix to elevate this meal from bland to stand-ing ovation. Therefore, the four stars is a result of my having to employ self-help when it comes to seasoning the meat. My bf has a food allergy so generally tacos come with little meat and cheese with lettuce and tomato being the primary filler. Not at this restaurant. They do not skimp on the meat when it come to the puffy tacos. Ones tried included the carne guisada, bacon-potato-egg, picadillo puffy tacos and chicken fajita. All of them were equally good. It's a place you want to try. I can't say it's the best I've ever had but it is good.
google avatar

PAT M.

Yelp
Who ever thought of yellow cheddar on green chicken enchiladas? Turns out its great, and the homemade corn tortillas are stellar, the best I have had in a long time.
google avatar

Christina T.

Yelp
Don't know what happened to their puffy chicken tacos, but today they were boring, tasteless and sat there before I got it. Got one cheese enchilada and it was just ok. I usually get their breakfast tacos and should have stuck with that because those are pretty good. Restaurant was hot too.
google avatar

Felix P.

Yelp
I wouldn't necessarily say the enchiladas are "the best"...but if you want great breakfast tacos and the freshest flour tortillas on earth, this is the place. Every taco I've tried here was great. They only take cash btw. Good place to pull in for a morning meal.
