A Glossary of America’s Regional Mexican Dishes and Where to Find Them | Eater

"A Wyoming‑based chain that popularized tater‑tot adaptations in Mexican‑American cuisine under the name 'Potato Olés,' contributing to the practice of serving seasoned tots as standalone sides or stuffed into other dishes." - Gustavo Arellano

How Did Tater Tot Nachos — Totchos — End Up on Mexican Menus? | Eater

"A franchise that has served “Potato Olés” — thinner, flattened, seasoned Tater Tots — since at least 1979. Early iterations reportedly included a small bean inside; in 2001 the brand introduced “Super Potato Olés,” a fully loaded version topped with specially seasoned beef, beans, cheddar, tomatoes, nacho cheese sauce, sour cream, guacamole, olives, and onion. That loaded presentation is frequently cited as a likely origin point for the modern totcho." - Emilly Prado

Google
I was not impressed with this place, and it was my first time having it. The meat in the tacos tasted like beans and was flat, and the fries were extremely salty. I don't recommend. In my opinion, Taco Time is better

Kimberly Leverette

Google
I have gone in to grab food as well as gone through the drive thru; the kindess, attention to detail, and positive attitude is such a welcome. My order(s) are correct even when I have multiple orders. I DON'T dread going here. A BIG Thank you!!!

Amber H

Google
Their food is always fresh tasting and the prices aren't terrible. The taco burgers are amazing! Highly recommend! I did go through the drive thru so that always comes with its own experience no matter where you go.

DJ Calhoun

Google
They didn't put a receipt in my bag. Messed up my order. So then I try to give them an opportunity to make it right. It was met with aggression and i presume racism Lloyd and joe.im truly lost for words. Further more I asked for corporate number. Lloyd said we don't have it here. Which is another lie told. Racism must stop

Alison Blomgren

Google
Had gone here since they were super small! Food is great! I'd recommend them! Potato Oles are one of my favorites!

Monica Moore

Google
I ordered the chicken & potato oles box. I received 3 very small strips of chicken the length and width of my thumb but that wasn’t even my biggest issue. I bit into my very tiny piece of chicken and the texture was all the way off. I question if this is actually even chicken. Needless to say I didn’t finish my meal and I won’t be eating here again.

Google
Angela is very sweet. Promoting the deals, making the place look clean and being very kind. Thanks for the experience!

Jeremy

Google
Food was good. They have reliable flavors of mexican fast food. The service was friendly but not quick as they only had one out of 4 people making our bean burritos.

Yelp
Took the family through the Taco John's very long drive-thru queue and...it's exactly what you'd expect from a place called Taco John's. OK, maybe not exactly. The "super hot" sauce did not come in a ketchup packet like the hot and mild. It was a green salsa, jalapeno I think, with some real heat in a tiny lidded plastic container. They're trying. But by and large it's uninspired American food "inspired" by Mexican dishes. Baby mama and I both got combo 8, a beef and potato burrito and a beef soft taco. Our six-year-old got chicken strips and tater tots, actually "Potato Oles," which are like tater tots but shorter and rounder, closer to a disc. Our burritos had them in it. I guess, overall, I'd compare it to Taco Bell without any of the batshit crazy stuff that makes Taco Bell fun to make fun of, or Taco Time without any of the nicer things (corn salsa, pepitas, etc.) that make it worth eating at. They're based in Wyoming, for God's sake. I don't know what I expected. The worker-shortage era drive thru was a long wait, as expected. The staff were very nice and friendly. If I ever have a hankering for tater tots _in_ a burrito, I might be back.

Yelp
Terrible service! I waited over 30 minutes for 3 burritos and some oles. When we got the food it tastes like it had been sitting out all day. The doors were locked and we've tried to call them but it just rings. 10/10 I will not be going back to that place again.

Rich N.

Yelp
remember when i have this place 5? that was wrong. the food was terrible. they got the order wrong. i smashed it out of anger.
google avatar

Yelp
Still the best in Spokane!!! I used to go there as a kid and even worked at the valley location in the early 90's. Great customer service too.

Sherri H.

Yelp
Will never go there again! They gave me a crispy Taco with a teaspoon of steamed chicken when I asked for a soft taco with crispy Chicken it was so gross $2.79 + tax. The boss ball was a joke teaspoon of lettuce I kid you not teaspoon of rice sprinkled with some black beans and they charged me $8.49 + tax. What the hell has happened to Taco John's they used to be a good place not anymore and I will tell everyone everyone about their food. The only thing was the cashier was nice I did not see the food until I got home it was very upset.

Yelp
I was in town and decided to try Taco John's. It was terrible. It was like a subpar Taco Bell, which is crazy. I was hungry so I would've eaten it anyway, but each item was luke warm, at best. After trying each thing, I threw it all away. Never again.
google avatar

Gi V.

Yelp
Customer service was amazing but the food was not I wanted to see if it was good we bought about $45 dollars worth of food and we all decided we would not try it again.
google avatar

Michele U.

Yelp
Friendly & excellent service, spotlessly clean, great, fresh food, salsa made fresh daily.

K L.

Yelp
Taco Tuesday is the best deal in town. Come in on a Tuesday and get a taco for $1.25.

H3artless. B.

Yelp
beef taco taste like my shoe and the bigger lady taking my order ruined what i wanted highly disappointed what's coming for you taco john is unspeakable.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Love their food! The breakfast burritos are yummy and you can't go wrong with their seasoned potato bites and nacho cheese!!
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
Attempted to use the free taco coupon today. It's one per order apparently, not per customer. Brought 3 people in and we were allowed 1 Taco to share. LMAO Really petty if you ask me

Cressie P.

Yelp
Hmmmm? I can't quite figure out what these guys are going for. I ordered beef and chicken street tacos with sides of refried beans, chips, tater tots, queso, and salsa. Where do I start? My kids couldn't even finish the beef tacos which is saying a lot because they love tacos in general... they said they had a strange flavor ‍ oh and, I ordered Street tacos and they came on flour tortillas ( to me this is a huge no-no) The beans were too thick to even swallow and very very dry, the queso was mixed with 3/4 beans and 1/4 cheese- wait what? The chicken tacos were all right but again, they were on flour tortillas. The salsa tasted like it was mostly made with applesauce? Pretty weird... The only thing to really rave about were the tater tots. They were very very good... But why come to a Mexican restaurant to order tater tot's? The guacamole was off the chain but I made it myself when I got home from picking up my order lol! I did order a churro, and it was actually really good so if you come to this taco John's just stick to fried items and you should be happy. I don't think I'll be going back.
google avatar

Tina R.

Yelp
Delicious. Potato ole is the best taters in town. Haven't been since I moved away years ago. Now I'm back and the food was just as great. Only thing that kept it from getting 5 stars is the crunchy chicken on the kids menu. It was spicy, I admit my daughter is probably pickier than most but it was too spicy for a kids item. Don't think there is anything else she'll eat so doesn't look like we will be going very often.

Yelp
Taco John's on the corner of Wellesley and Nevada has been in Spokane for years and years. Sadly, it is now the only TJ's in the area, which is a shame. Whenever I'm in this part of town, I have to stop in and get some Tex-Mex goodness. The problem, honestly, is figuring what to get; everything there is really tasty, but you can't go wrong with a Taco Bravo, Meat and Potato burrito, or Potato Oles. Seriously though, everything here is really good.
google avatar

Naomi J.

Yelp
This is the best Taco John's I have ever been to. It's very clean and the employees are kind and courteous. I stop here exclusively when I pass through Spokane. Thank you for being awesome!
google avatar

Krystin S.

Yelp
This is the only location I've been to but it's perfect every time, i order the grilled chicken burrito and ole potatoes and They also have a Killer spicy verde sauce. The staff is smiley and they keep the restaurant very clean.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Better than the (Bell or Time) If you have a craving for texmex this is the place. Its most always clean (if you see stupid patrons making a mess, let them know it isn't their home and to pick it up) the staff works hard to keep this place clean; I have witnessed it on many occasions. IF you have never stopped in, I suggest you give it a try.
google avatar

Cassie H.

Yelp
The two guys that work Friday mornings are amazing, not only is the food always great but they are both very friendly!
google avatar

William M.

Yelp
Hadn't had Taco Johns since I was a kid and they had 2 locations in my hometown (they both closed up and left town) but a recent road trip had a location and dropped by for a bite. WOW, have I missed the flavors! The potato oles are amazing (couldn't get enough of them and I even had the large size) and the tacos were even better than I remember. Polite, attentive, and courteous employees (even late night, thanks guys!) made the trip there that much better. Still sad there's no Taco Johns in our area but thanks for the trip down memory lane and next time we're in the area they definitely have our return patronage

Yelp
After living in Spokane for 10 years, in hillyard for 1 year, my friend finally got me to taco Johns, the food and sauces are so freaking good! Crunchy tacos are amazing, the tater tot discs are wonderful, and for the price you get a crap ton of food. I'll be coming here instead of taco time or Taco Bell.

Brian P.

Yelp
If you want to die of hunger in there drive thru go ahead. There drive thru times are worse then dine in sit down
google avatar

Aaron S.

Yelp
I go to this place more often than I care to admit. But the service is good and the tacos are good. One of the guys who works there even took the time to writ down on paper all the daily specials for me. I think these people are starting to know me by name. So what I'm saying is that i find no fault in Taco Johns. Unless you don't like orange. There's a lot of orange in there. But I like orange.
google avatar

Nick B.

Yelp
The best fast-food Mexican in town. Nice, clean little restaurant, well worth going out of your way for! I wish there were more of these in town, I would definitely be a regular.
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
Om nom nom! Oh my gosh these fast food tacos were delish! My cousin's friend insisted we get Taco John's before they dropped me off at the airport and I was game. They both said it is better than Taco Bell. We went through the drive-thru and I ordered the two tacos combo. To my surprise my combo came with a cup of tasty little tater-tots! The tacos were good too, although maybe they had a bit too much lettuce in them for my tastes. The cheese was melted into the meat so that was an awesome surprise. Also we got churros! I was so excited because you can never find churros anywhere except when you're at a fair or something. For the three of us our total came to a little over 20 bucks. Not bad in my opinion. Seriously, it's just straight up Americanized Mexican Fast Food - but they do it right and I like it!

Yelp
I'm giving it four stars for nostalgia... I think this is the last taco John's in all of Spokane and surrounding area. Brings back a lot of memories from my childhood growing up in Spokane. The food is average... It's not great for Mexican food. But the potato ole's and some of the other menu items are really great to have. But the potato ole's are seasoned differently now... Actually too much seasoning. Over salted and probably some MSG. They really don't need to add seasoning to them. It's updated and modern... In tears good. The tacos and burritos or how I remember them. It would be nice if they would have some healthier options... Maybe follow some of the food concepts that Rubio's fresh Mexican Grill has
google avatar

Yelp
This use to be one of my favorite places to eat grew up on taco johns in Idaho but now they over charge a lot and even cheese cost like really and the little girl whose always there is rude condescending and annoying plus the place was filthy garbage bags on floor tables with stuff on them I mean come on
google avatar

Angela M.

Yelp
Better than Taco Time or Taco Bell for absolutely sure. If you have a craving for Americanized Mexican this is the place to go to. Everything is moderately priced (it's more expensive than national chains but not OUCH expensive) and tasty. Hot food is hot and cold food is cold. They have lots of options for sauces and salsa and varying degrees of spice. The meat is actual meat as you can see the meat fibers so it does not appear to be processed fast-foody meat. The potato ole's are really nice and seasoned with (I believe) seasoned-salt. They are a great compliment to any meal and are wonderful when dipped in their hot sauce. They also have hot, crispy, sweet and fluffy churros, something which Taco Time/Bell does not seem to have year-round. Good food, good service and great memories considering how old this establishment is.

Yelp
Taco Johns...need I write more. This is a chain, with nothing more to offer than cheap, greasy, Americanized Mexican fast food. If you are craving the TJ's, this is it. ENJOY your six pack and a pound people.

Al B.

Yelp
Long time since my last visit, my friends and I enjoyed Steak taco Salad, steak nachos, and tacos. Fast courteous service and food well worth the price in a clean store. Will definitely be back soon.
google avatar

Yelp
The best tacos ever to be made in a restaurant that's fast food in Spokane Washington TACO JOHNS " one hundred percent recommendation to stop here every time you hit Wellesley and Nevada once you have one you want another so come on and try one today

Yelp
I can't see why this place gets the generally positive reviews it does. I drive by all the time so I thought I'd roll through the drivethru when I was in the neighborhood recently. I ordered a breakfast burrito and 3 chicken street tacos. The tacos were pretty horrible - cold, soggy, and really bland. The breakfast burrito was a bit better, but only in that it wasn't soggy and cold; it was still really quite tasteless, boring, and small. The hot sauce in a packet was basically mildly spicy ketchup. My order was about $9.50 for just these items, and I felt pretty dang ripped off. Afterwards, I wished I wouldn't have been so adventurous and just went to Atilano's or Gerardo's for my Mexican fix. I will be avoiding this place from now on.

Yelp
More fast food than which it what made me stop here, NOT Mexican food. Had lackadaisical manager holding conversation rather than my order for what seemed like minutes. Food came quick but the quality was both good on the ground beef and BAD, like dreadfully over cooked refried beans. Kept getting sprayed with clean by the young lady who didn't know better had to ask her to leave me alone. Sad face, going to try again on $0.80 hard shell taco day.

Trent M.

Yelp
Amazing tacos and potato olés! Great service! I wish there were more locations in Spokane!
google avatar

Mia C.

Yelp
My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for years now. There is a wide variety of awesome foods to choose from. So if you don't like burritos then you might like the buffalo wings. Service is always great especially for a fast food place. They always have such great portions too they definitely don't short you. Overall best American Mexican fast food in Spokane.

Cindy G.

Yelp
We love Taco John we love their food but lately when we go they don't give us any hot sauce we ordered seven tacos and one Super Burrito and two large orders of potato olay's they gave us one container of super hot sauce which is one of the biggest reasons we go is because we love it! Needless to say we didn't enjoy our food we didn't get the hot sauce we needed!!!
google avatar

J J.

Yelp
Regional chain fast-food Americanized Tex-Max, but so good! Generous portions, free soft-drink refills, and a very nice dining room. Quick cheerful service. Clean rest rooms. Wish there were more Taco John's around!
google avatar

Jen S.

Yelp
Such an addict for this place. There was one in C'oeur d'Alene and it closed, as did the one in Kellogg. If I need a fix, it's either here or all the way home to Montana. Softshells, taco bravo, potato oles....all good stuff.
google avatar

Jason K.

Yelp
It's fast food... But slower. I've tried several things on the menu but not so sure ill go back... Not sure why but meals are always cold.
google avatar

Shelly C.

Yelp
Almost there! We are Westsiders so we like to hit up Taco Johns when we are over the mountains. My husband has been taking about it since we left our house at 6AM! He has too many favorites...nachos, taco bravo, and hard shell tacos. My favorite is the potatoe oles. I am getting hungry!
google avatar

Cody H.

Yelp
Love taco johns! If you're running late or want some fast good tacos then taco johns is for you!
google avatar

Phil B.

Yelp
If you eat fast food tex-mex eat this or don't eat at all.
google avatar

Alissa F.

Yelp
Will not be going back. Went in to try the street tacos added a burrito to the order BIG HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT! ! First by the price, too much. Then the portion of meat, too small. Finally the packaging, SMASHED!!
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
My whole family is addicted to Taco John's. My brother drives out of his way 20 miles to TJ's when passing through Spokane. The first one we ate at was in Great Falls, MT and thank God they have one here in Spokane! We love this place!
google avatar

Tisha R.

Yelp
I would rather spend the extra couple bucks than go to taco bell. The ingredients are fresher and the store is nicer. Gets better and better everytime I go in! The sides are HUGE for what you pay for. The drive thru is quick, but the parking lot is always full. The staff is friendly and I have never received a wrong order. Wonderful

Rik A.

Yelp
I thought that I could only love Taco Bell.....I was wrong. I went to Taco Johns today and was a happy customer! I ordered my food to go and noticed that the place seemed very clean, which is nice, and their salsa bar was well kept up. I ordered street tacos and they were delicious. Not a lot of meat, but still really good. Everyone else in my party was quite please with their food as well. Not to mention, the gentleman at the counter was super nice. I told him he looked and sounded like Tim Meadows (google him if you don't know) and as I was leaving, he did his best ladies man Tim Meadows impersonation. It was awesome.
