South Texas Chain Taco Palenque Opens in Austin - Eater Austin

"South Texas chain Taco Palenque opened its first location in Austin. It's a ghost kitchen location with takeout and delivery services within GhostLine Kitchens. It offers breakfast and lunch menus with items like pirata tacos, burritos, and fideo. The chain was founded by Don Pancho in Laredo in 1987 and now has restaurants across Texas." - Nadia Chaudhury

I visited your location last night, intending to make a purchase before the advertised midnight closing time. I arrived at 11:00 PM and found the store already closed, with staff cleaning and refusing service. This was disappointing as I relied on the posted hours. I understand that closing duties require time, but closing an hour early creates inconvenience for customers. I suggest ensuring staff adheres to the advertised closing time or updating the posted hours to reflect actual closing practices. I appreciate your attention to this matter. I hope to have a better experience during my next visit.

Google
Terrible experience at Taco Palenque 620. The lady on the window clearly had no interest in working, with a rude attitude and zero effort to provide good service. If she doesn’t want to be there, they should just send her home or fire her. On top of that, my order of only two breakfast tacos took more than 10 minutes to be ready. Nothing justifies such a delay with such poor service. Definitely not coming back to this place. I’ll try the Cyprees Creek location instead.

Google
I ordered delivery so I can't speak to dining in house. I ordered a chorizo and egg and a bean and egg taco. Firstly, there was so much food in both tacos that the tortillas were soggy to the point of falling apart in your hands. The eggs in both were runny. The bean and egg taco had about 3 full scrambled eggs and maybe a teaspoon or two of beans. How this latter one could have been soggy I have no idea, but it was. This food is absolutely disgusting. I threw away about 3 lbs of food because it was such trash.

Google
Taco Palenque always comes through in the clutch. Best spot for some late night eats. Also one of the few places to get fideo. Fajitas are good, panchos, breakfast tacos. It’s all good.

It was our 1st time at a Palenque restaurant. The service was great!! The food is delicious 😋 Their new corn in a cup is so good.

Google
I visited this establishment to enjoy some tacos and a large rice, but unfortunately my experience was far from pleasant. First and foremost, the customer service was extremely disappointing. My order was incorrect, and when I brought it to their attention, I was met with attitude instead of assistance. To make matters worse, I witnessed them spitting in my food before it was handed to me. At that point, I requested a refund. I've tried contacting them multiple times via phone and email, but my efforts have gone unanswered.

I've been going to this company for years, I just moved to Austin and saw a familiar sign, I had to stop by. I went yesterday August 2nd, excited to grab some food. Unfortunately, the person at the register was pretty rude and seemed impatient while I ordered. Then, I ended up waiting at least 15 minutes for my food, which is way longer than the usual five minutes I'm used to in the Valley. It was really disappointing. I'm thinking of trying out the locations in Round Rock or Cedar Park to see if they're any better. Please make sure your staff gets proper training because the young lady who helped me didn't seem suited for customer service.

Google
Breakfast Tacos🌯, you would have a good amount of food. It is not small. The cost may be slightly higher, but it is good 👍 Breakfast Taco🌯. I would love it whenever it opens earlier for someone who may be working early.

Yelp
I visited this location last month to get a few breakfast burritos for the Things and my partner. I've been to other locations before, so I thought I knew what to expect when ordering. I ordered a chicharron burrito for myself. For those folks out who dont know what this is: chicharron is a dish usually featuring deep-fried pork rind (skin) or pork belly or both. Recipes for chicharron vary greatly. Most use pork; others use mutton, beef, or chicken. Pork belly and rib cuts are common. The main ingredient is typically seasoned, boiled, dried, and deep-fried. Based upon this information, chicharron can vary in taste and spicy depending upon how its made. My chicharron was salty and tough. To minimize the salt, I added salsa but this still did not neutralize the salt. The problem with dishes that are too slaty besides the obvious water retention, increased blood pressure issues, etc., too much salt will minimize any other flavors. I ended up tossing my burrito because of the high salt content. Perhaps this was an 'off day' for this location, but when/if I return to this location, I will be ceratin to get another dish.

Yelp
Portions suck for 20$ I can't even make a taco I will be back tmrw on my lunch break this a rip off for 20$!!! Nothing like the phone on the menu like WTF IS THIS!!

Yelp
25 minutes to get breakfast and then mess it up, deserves a 1. Horrible service after bringing the issue to management.

Yelp
Finally! A real good, real authentic Mexican taco shop in my neighborhood!!!!! The moment you walk in, you know it's going to be good- the smell tells you this. The fresh salsa bar is another clue that yummy things await you- freshly made, several varieties, pickled onions, fresh radishes and limes are amongst the items awaiting you. None of the jarred abominations that the Tex Mex joints seem so fond of. I tried two types of tacos and will definitely be back to eat my way through the rest of the menu.

Yelp
Correction: The Taco Tuesday special is not a BOGO, rather reduced prices on select tacos.

Yelp
So happy Austin gets its first location of this popular South Texas chain! They've recently expanded to Round Rock and Cedar Park, but this Lakeline location will be convenient for a lot of people. It's a remodeled building that used to be Fazoli's just outside of Walmart and Lowe's by 183 & 620. For my first time visiting any of their stores I ended up having the breakfast tacos which seem a bit expensive but have good tortillas. Both chorizo & egg tacos and bacon & egg tacos mix the meat in with the scrambled eggs and the chorizo was especially flavorful but they can use some salsa for moisture. The bean & cheese was my favorite of the three with a double tortilla and plenty of contents. Of course they have a drive-through but I like eating inside where they have their famous salsa bar with free chips and salsa, and a clean, pleasant dining room with about 20 tables including the booths around the windows. There are self-serve ordering kiosks at the entrance or you can order at the counter and everyone was friendly and the food came out quickly. I look forward to exploring more of their menu soon!

Yelp
Great fajitas and tacos. I recommend the super quesadilla with fajita. Grab some side items from the salsa bar and dig in to delicious Tex Mex. My favorite restaurant down south is now in Austin! This place is. Casual quick service with a late night drive through. Definitely top tier after a night of drinking.

Yelp
The quality is usually replicated across these chain locations. The restaurant was out of soda and there was no update to the digital menu or check out process to indicate there was no soda. The alternative was bottled water according to the menu. When we asked for bottled water we were handed water cups for the drink fountain. Salsa bar was fresh and had chips as well.

Yelp
I have seen this restaurant pop up on Yelp a few times. They recently opened a location near my neighborhood and I just had to stop in to give it try. The store has a an inviting interior and a drive through window. I went inside to explore the menu and found several items that I had to taste. I ordered two tacos and a burrito to go. The pirata taco included savory steak strips with refried beans and cheese. The guisada taco was flavorful but not as good as I was hoping. Finally, I had the Picadillo burrito and it was delicious. I can tell you that the menu is extensive and I'll be going back to try out other dishes. Well worth it folks.

Yelp
I went to the taco palenque on 811 San Pedro Ave in San Antonio Texas at 5:20 pm on June 5th 2025 and the young lady in the burgundy tee shirt (view camera) was literally eating food while preparing food I made a complaint and they carried on like it was normal. I mean she stuck a piece of meat in her mouth and with the same hand touched product in the store all in 1 motion. that was simply trifling!

Yelp
Wow! Amazing! I experienced a first: we walked in the restaurant and a Priest or Deacon was performing a Catholic ceremony, blessing the restaurant. They have dozens of staff. I haven't seen that many people working at the same time in this size of place. The bean burritos sounded good, yet the cashier informed me they contain lard, so I got the Impossible Burrito instead. It rocks that a traditional Mexican restaurant offers an Impossible burrito. My family who accompanied me told me that they offer 'all you can eat chips and salsa." Perfect, I haven't had all you can eat chips and salsa for years. I loved the the hottest salsa. I also loved the pico de Gallo. A surprise was raw radishes. I haven't had those in forever either, so I loved finishing my meal with a bunch of them. The unsweetened ice tea was superb too. Delicious. One of the most satisfying meals I have had in awhile! This place is a winner!

Yelp
The "contact us so we can make it right" messages on here are just for show to make it look like there is decent customer service. We sent a message to "Tamy" in response to a scripted customer service message saying they'd make it right, and never received a response.

Yelp
I was going to cook some crispy tacos and my hamburger meat was bad so decided to try Taco Palenque since they are really close to the house. Ordered 2 crispy taco plates online and picked them up a few minutes later. When I got home I discovered they were soft tacos not crispy. Very disappointed since I was really looking forward to crispy tacos. They were just ok - not sure I'll bother again.

Yelp
Went to the drive through to grab 3 bean & cheese tacos, seems simple, definitely not! They had me pull into a parking space and i waited 35 minutes, for 3 very simple tacos. They apologized and gave me a free dessert and an offered me a drink which they didn't bring, it's now 8:24 , I ordered at 7:47.

Yelp
This location is my favorite! The staff is always very friendly. Anytime there has been an issue with my order they fix it immediately! There has been 2 times when I was missing a taco in my order but when I notified them they gave me the missing taco plus an extra. I understand mistakes happen so it's nice when the restaurant wants to make it right. Always hot and fresh!

Paul Z.

Yelp
Very happy with the Taco Palenque at 183 and 620. The portions are generous so its a good value for the money. All the employees are nice and helpful and we love the fish tacos among other things. Hopefully they will keep those as a year-round menu item.

Yelp
I'm obsessed. The moment I had this place in south Texas, I was hooked. Then they started moving closer and closer to me from round rock to cedar park, and now I've been blessed with a location next to my house here! I've eaten at this location 4 times since they opened last week and I scored 3 stacks of free tacos! The food at this location is better than the other 5 locations I've visited. It not only tastes better, but the presentation is cleaner and they even have little tongs to grab your meat! Why eat anywhere else, especially for breakfast and for late night? Nothing else compares in the area period. Also, the staff here are on top of everything. They are super friendly, they walk around asking if you need anything, and most importantly, this location is spotless. You feel so clean when you eat here. Game Plan: When I recommend people eat at Taco P, I always emphasize the importance of eating inside! The fresh tortillas will taste the best the moment you get them. Plus the unlimited salsa and pickle bar truly makes the experience. I order a parillada for two but it feeds 3. While you wait, get a thing of chips, mix the pico de gallo in with the spicy salsa, and load up on cilantro and pickled onion. If you run out of tortillas, don't be afraid to ask for more, they're free. I really don't have many negatives. I hate when they pre chop the cilantro in containers because it loses flavor and turns black. They don't do this often. Also, the fideo is so good, but the price is kinda crazy. I still buy it though lol. Same with the flan, it tastes great, but the price seems a little high. Overall, this is my favorite place to eat in Austin and I'll continue to come in every week.

Yelp
Went through the drive through. Blasting music which apparently is the same in the inside. Did took a while to come out but it was good for a late night greasy snack. It wasn't bad especially since there wasn't many other taco places in the area

Missy D.

Yelp
Don't like the food at all, ordered 5 crispy tacos was greasy, they mixed the ground beef with potatoes, also I ordered 2 cups of corns was way too much salt, all the foods ended up into the trash can. Gross

Yelp
Excellent authentic Mexican food, great tasting fajitas the best I've had in a while. I will recommended to my family and friends . Was worth the drive from Pearland Texas and service excellent, restaurant very well maintained . Friendly staff welcoming ambiance. We return soon thank you Taco Palenque from Mayan Family .

Yelp
Yes, the do have a 3 beef crispy taco plate!! It's awesome. Also, they have a little salsa bar.
google avatar

Bobby H.

Yelp
It's not cheap. But they have huge portions, the food is fresh and they have a salsa bar. It's never dirty and the food comes out fast. You can tell the GM of this location runs a tight ship.

Yelp
This was my second visit since the grand opening & I will not be returning. Initial visit - ordered through the drive-thru, received order, arrived home only to discover missing items. Calling the restaurant to voice concerns was an epic error! Second visit, I ordered online. Went into the restaurant, picked up the order, arrived home and the chicken was missing from the lettuce wrap. I only received a small container of shredded lettuce

Yolanda R.

Yelp
The food is just NOT worth the price you pay. If people are upset and boycotting chipotle about their portion size... simply stay away from here because it's worse than them. I got a "burrito" and the size of it... just wow. Reference pic for the idea.. on top of the fact they didn't have refries beans so my burrito was missing that? Ugh not a great experience and def not going back
google avatar

Leah G.

Yelp
I love taco palenque but every morning I come here they have a cone blocking the drive thru even know the store is opened. It's obnoxious. Move the cone!

Maddie M.

Yelp
Fast-food that tastes authentic. 10/10 recommend for breakfast and anytime of day. They have HUGE tacos!!

Karen O.

Yelp
Fast service and food quality very fresh! Good ambiance. Would like more sauce options.

Jennifer Z.

Yelp
The lady on the window never understands my order. I don't know why I keep going to this place. This is America, learn English for gods sake.

Amy O.

Yelp
This place is good and the service is always friendly and welcoming. The food is tasty, but I do agree with another review that said you have to doctor the food up. Their salsas are delicious, but they don't always remember to include them. I have to tone down our homemade salsa for my kids, so I try to always ask for theirs, so I can have the spiciness my husband and I like. It's fast food, so I don't expect sit down restaurant quality. However, it's great to grab on the way home from a busy day, before heading out to evening events. Just remember to ask for their salsa if you're not going home to eat it.
google avatar

Jay F.

Yelp
Service was fast and friendly. Sad to say the food was over priced. Three crispy tacos and el pastor $19.00. Crispy tacos were more shells than food and the El pastor was dry. This was my first time and doubt if I will come back. I was so hoping this place would be the taco place.
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
Food is good but The general manager is a very rude and disrespectful guy! He needs to start valuing his loyal customers and definitely needs an attitude adjustment.

Rick C.

Yelp
At this location the food was not that good and the employees not that friendly. I placed my order and paid and while waiting for my food they notified me they're out of baked potatoes. They replaced the potato with a quesadilla that was not that good. Location in Round Rock is way better!!
google avatar

Crystal J.

Yelp
Fast service! The pastor street tacos are so delicious! Their corn tortillas have this unique amazing taste. Definitely will be coming back for more.

Melissa B.

Yelp
My family has given this company many chances, but they just cannot provide food as ordered. They make tacos with incorrect ingredients, leave items off orders and then argue with you when you tell them something is wrong. Incompetence mixed with terrible customer service.

Chris E.

Yelp
tired of going to places who misadvertise their hour. it's 12:22 am. i got here at 12:15am. there is a cone in the drive and their dining doors are locked and their own info says they are open. don't support businesses that lie to those of us that work late and drive all the way there.
google avatar

Joseph L.

Yelp
I really hate that only a few months after their opening I'm leaving this review but I've continued to go back hoping things would get better but...Nope. It's just bad. To be completely frank, when this place opened their doors on 620, everything was great. The food was fresh, tasted great and our orders were always correct. Sadly over the past few months it's gone quickly down hill. On 2 occasions I have found that the onions on the salsa bar were spoiled and smelled very sour. How did no one catch this earlier?? How many people ate them before I brought it to the management's attention. Unfortunately both times I had added them to my food before I smelled the pungent odor. In addition to this on several occasions the chicken has been dry, chewy and tasted old. Today was the absolute last straw, I ordered breakfast hoping that once again it would be better...I was wrong. After a few bites of my egg& potato breakfast taco I had to stop eating and open it because I swore I could taste what I thought was the consistency of bacon. It was the potatoes. The potatoes were so dry and chewy I honestly thought it was bacon. Just gross. I've started to wonder if the owners are just trying to save money by not tossing old food.

Debbie T.

Yelp
This is our first time here and it was fabulous!!!! We were greeted and the recommendations of the fajita meat was sooooo soft!! This is a great place that isn't expensive at all. Will definitely come back!!

Daniel J.

Yelp
Food was good. Reasonable. Nice service. It was a good value and was a step up from a "Fast Food" restaurant.

oskier c.

Yelp
I went and got some breakfast tacos when they were having a deal, buy one get one. However, nowhere on the sign or any advertisement did it say limit one free taco, no asterisk or anything. Ok, so I cut down my order some. Tried a few of the breakfast tacos, but they weren't really anything special to me. My kids didn't like their tortillas and they thought their usual go to, beans and cheese tasted funny. Perhaps they are used to lesser quality bean and cheese. I may or may not go back. The kicker, they charged me twice for my tacos so I have to dispute it with my credit card company.

Carlos A.

Yelp
Great service. Clean environment. Good food. The "parrillada" for 2 is enough for two people, but nothing spectacular and in hindsight, definitely not worth the cost. The quesadillas were delicious and I suspect that it is a better strategy to select less expensive items from the menu if you want to get your money's worth. Unlimited free chips and salsa is a big draw. Will return with the new strategy.

Karen S.

Yelp
The food is really good. Good prices. Very casual. Staff are friendly. Love the avocado hot sauce.
