Taco Primo’s Thrive City location falls flat - Review - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Taco Primo, from the people behind The Snug, had a strong showing when they debuted inside the Pacific Heights bar with solid tacos and burritos. But the Thrive City iteration of this Cali-Mexican counter service concept doesn’t live up to its predecessor. The best part of the tacos and burritos at this location is the La Palma tortillas; otherwise, everything tends to fall flat. The meats range from being decently tender and moist to dry and unevenly seasoned. We’d recommend sticking with the tacos—the burritos tend to be mushy and need a generous pour of salsa to inject some more flavor in each bite. Still, this place runs smoothly, so if you need a spot for something quick before or after an event at the Chase Center, it's a fine option. Seating is limited to a couple of tables and window-side stools, but just outside are public benches with a view of Bayfront Park. Food Rundown Tacos We’d go for the beef or chicken tacos. While both have dry patches, they’re the most tender of the meats. Feel free to skip going “primo.” The added sour cream, guacamole, and cheese muddles the flavors and masks the solid salsa lining the bottom of the tortilla. photo credit: Patrick Wong Burritos Like the tacos, we like getting these with chicken. The rice is too soft, and on occasion, we’ve gotten a tortilla that’s wet and soggy. We’d go with the tacos over the burrito every time. PlayMute video credit: Patrick Wong" - Patrick Wong

Fast-Casual Taqueria Taco Primo Finds a Second Home Feeding Sports Fans at Thrive City | Eater SF

"From the team behind cocktail bar the Snug and seafood spot Little Shucker comes a new fast-casual restaurant debuting at Chase Center’s Thrive City on Tuesday, April 22; it opens 4 p.m.–10 p.m. Monday–Friday and 11:30 a.m.–10 p.m. Saturday–Sunday, with weekday lunch launching soon. Chef Adrian Garcia—who leads the kitchen at Little Shucker as executive chef and hails from Michelin-starred Benu and Quince, by way of Addison in San Diego—oversees the menu; Ringo says, “It was just a no-brainer, especially when we were chatting with Adrian,” she says. “Given his cultural history and the cooking techniques he had in his back pocket, we were all just really excited about it.” Garcia and the Snug owners worked out a compact menu of tacos, burritos, bowls, salads, and quesadillas with four protein choices (chicken, al pastor, braised beef, and vegan jackfruit); kids options include a cheese quesadilla or a bean-and-cheese burrito, and sides include pico or guacamole with chips. Flour tortillas come courtesy of La Palma in the Mission, while Garcia adds a lime-cured cabbage that adorns the tacos, burritos, bowls, and salads to give the items some crunch and acidity, plus all of the slow-cooked proteins. Ringo praised Garcia’s “light, zippy” lime-coriander dressing on the salads. The salsa taquera, roasted tomatillo, and habanero salsas are all made by Garcia, with the habanero—“made with pineapple and carrot, emulsified into a creamy texture”—touted as a crowd favorite. Churro fries round out the menu as a sweet option, with caramel and chocolate sauce as an add-on. “We wanted to do something that was a tight, concise menu, very approachable — kind of like an In-N-Out-style menu of Cali-Mex cuisine,” Ringo says. This Thrive City location is technically the concept’s second site: the fast-casual restaurant first launched as a pop-up at the Snug in December 2024, eventually taking over the entire menu and opening its own storefront next door in late February. In that changeover announcement on Instagram the Snug team wrote, in part, “Unfortunately, as much as we all liked some of our previous menu items, that food just wasn’t working financially in a post-Covid world with costs skyrocketing, folks drinking less alcohol, and delivery apps becoming increasingly popular. To be totally honest, we had no choice but to adjust to the times and move to a food program that could stand on its own a bit more and do better on the delivery apps.” On the move into Mission Bay, Ringo added, “I think it is a space that brings together sports fans, food lovers, and locals,” and, “We were automatically drawn to that kind of community, and it just felt right. And getting to kind of debut this concept in such an iconic, high-traffic and high-volume part of San Francisco is genuinely exciting.”" - Dianne de Guzman

Google
I was excited to see Taco Primo open near the chase center and looking forward to trying them. Sadly I was disappointed. My al pastor taco was flavorless and I thought they might have given me chicken by mistake, but each taco has a label and it was what I ordered. The beef taco was better with some flavor. The medium salsa was to my palette mild. The service efficient, the location may be convenient - but its not for me.

Google
I got the al pastor, chicken, and beef tacos. Bland flavors. Wasn't impressed. Dirty table surface. Not coming again.

Google
Great addition to the Chase Center, delicious food at a cheap price point, and quick too. I got the al pastor burrito with the mild salsa on the side and it hit the spot. Definitely will go back.

Yelp
Ayo u think the food around the stadium would b good... till you realize ur at the stadium This is the most aggressively mid Mexican food I ever had in my life. Like if chipotle married a subway chain. And had the most corporate made to order baby u ever thot of. Chicken taste like koala ankle meat. Like cafeteria meat. Pico had a lil spin to it. Why they put a spin on the pico. Don't do that. It came out worse. Beans were sadder than my employment history. Just lukewarm and sad. Portions decent for the price and location. Just wish the portions had flavor. And didn't taste like prison. They were out of water. Asked the guy for more water. He asked a different guy to bring out more water. That guy didn't bring out more water. So I left with my dry bowl and no water. Will not be returning unless I go on a date with a person that has a taste for lukewarm sad beans and prison chicken. Which I hope is never. Do not come here. Or to the pizza place. Good night.

Yelp
This is a great addition to the Chase Center. I loved my taco. However, i do think that portions are quite small for the amount that you are paying for. I got my 1 taco for $8 (including tax)

Yelp
The customer service and the location were great. Everyone was so kind and helpful. The location at Chase Center and where it's at on the grounds is awesome. It's in a prime location with a good view of the bay. Sadly the food I tried did not meet expectations. While it is better and cheaper than the burrito spot inside Chase Center. It's not that much better. The burrito bowl is tiny for the price and not worth it. The beef burrito was a size. However, all the food lacked any good flavor at all. Besides the size of the burrito bowl being so small. The beef was dry. The beans and rice were also stale and lacked any real flavor. Also, having to pay for cheese and quac is one thing, but for barley get any amount of guac was disappointing. The burrito was good size and worth the price. But again, lacked flavor. I hope they improve on their flavors and portion size for the burrito bowl. I might give this place another chance in the future. But Senor Sisig at Chase Center is much better all around.

Yelp
In going to Warrior games, there is a growing number of options in Thrive City, the community that surrounds Chase Center. This restaurant opened just as the NBA playoffs, facing Harmonic Brewery and just before Che Fico. Being early for a Monday night game, i noticed the order line was relatively short (5 people ahead of me), so I joined them. The wait gave me the chance to study their menu before ordering. I noticed a self serve water station to the right of the cashier with clear plastic cups and a water dispenser. After placing my order, I walked past the kitchen area to the pickup area on the far left. The expediter pressed the button to trigger buzzers given at the time of purchase. Not wanting to hover over diners or block the walkway, I stood behind the expediter near the restroom in waiting for my order. Tgd four tables inside and the counter windows seats were occupied so I walked outside to a bench area near a photo opp display. I started with a chicken taco (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=MLcBwiEtJ9JwJGJUZRxPyw), which came with a container of requested hot hot hot sauce (habanero). It's the yellowish sauce in the photo (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=5cgCrtYe8C3Lk91vOtm9OQ) on the top right. It was a flour tortilla with lime cured cabbage, cilantro and onion, and salsa. It was tasty as I added the hot sauce before each bite. I also tried thecheese quesadilla which came with a small container of pico de gallo (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=5cgCrtYe8C3Lk91vOtm9OQ) (bottom right container); I sprinkled a little of pico de gallo on each slice to make it moreinteresting(https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=xPhKKvTYO3hlAyiyfzEkjQ). There were four warm wedges to an order. My stomach was satisfied but not overly full after finishing this. The cashier was friendly and helpful in taking my order and the pickup guy equally friendly and efficient. I am happy that there are more food options especially given the wallet friendly pricing. I look forward to trying other items on their board on a future stop.

Yelp
Ordering through the app was quick and easy, and service was friendly at pick up. The ambiance was clean and bright inside, and I enjoyed eating outside at nearby Thrive City general seating facing the water. But the jackfruit in my bowl was cold and the rice lukewarm. The flavors were good, the bowl was a satisfying size, and the habanero salsa nice and spicy, but next time I will check the temperature of my order before I leave.

Yelp
Taco Primo recently opened at Thrive City and I'm a big fan! I work nearby and really appreciate having this new / fast casual dining option. I first tried the braised beef taco + an order of guacamole. The guac is super flavorful w/ a balanced texture featuring nice chunks of avocado. The braised beef taco was also tender & delicious. You can tell that everything here is handmade and thoughtfully put together. While the ordering station might appear intimidating to some people, I can assure that the folks working here have been friendly and helpful each time I've stopped by. Salud!

Yelp
There was a lot of mention around this restaurant so I had to check it out. I got a burrito chicken bowl and I was so disappointed. Half the bowl is rice, and they just sprinkled some salsa, beans and chicken to make it look full. I feel like i paid for "rice" as the main course and for the side of meat and veggies as toppings. Only gives one small sauce packet, and have to pay for cheese, sour cream and more. Would much rather order from Chipotle which has equivalent price but much more variety and option

Yelp
Stumbled in after the warriors game and we were BLOW AWAY! Amazing food, even better prices. We got a beef burrito (primo style with guacamole), a bean and cheese burrito and 2 cokes for under $30. Can't beat it. Limited indoor seating and no restrooms but very cute inside. Service was great. The cashier was helpful and the food came out fast. We will be back for sure!

Yelp
This is a great addition to the food establishments in Thrive city. You can get a Chipotle-style meal quick and cheap. I like their bowls better than what you get at Chipotle. The location is bright and sunny, but a bit in the small side. It's a place to grab a quick lunch and head back to work!

Yelp
If I was craving tacos and wanted to go near my work, then this could satisfy my craving but ONLY if i was desperately desperately craving tacos. While the meats were flavorful, it was also greasy. I would rather spend money elsewhere that have better tacos.

Yelp
Why is the asada stew meat? Makes no sense, tastes like you're eating pot roast. Not sure why anybody would go here.

Yelp
I love this place especially before an event at Chase. The quality is amazing and you can't beat the price! So affordable and delicious!

Yelp
I was very surprised to see how affordable it is especially being located at Chase Center. Most of their meals are under $10! As far as quality I'd say its basic Mexican and nothing special but its the price thats so appealing. Service is good and they're new trying to make it. Support them and I hope they make it!

Yelp
I recently discovered this new addition to the Chase Center, and I'm so glad I gave it a try! The service was quick and friendly, staff was great and welcoming. The food? Delicious. Everything tasted fresh, flavorful, and well prepared -- from the tacos to the burrito bowls. I was especially impressed by how reasonably priced everything was. I definitely recommend you check out Taco Primo during your next game or stopping by if you're in the area!

Yelp
Went back recently and the glove situation was much better!! One of my fave spots in the area now. As a vegetarian, I appreciate that their plant-based option isn't boring like other spots. The jackfruit meat is so unique and tasty! Food is pretty fairly priced too. Definitely recommend this spot, especially to other plant-based folks.

Ariana P.

Yelp
It was nice and clean inside! David helped me make my decision since it was my first time he recommended the braised beef burrito which was flavorful and a good portion of food. Staff were welcoming and helpful.

Yajaira C.

Yelp
Great customer service and clean! Food was yummy as well. It's close by to the chase center which is great bite for after an event

Yelp
Those tacos were awful in every way. Bad texture, bad flavor, weird tortillas. Just a big no.

Holly M.

Yelp
i work in the area and planned on trying this my whole shift so i was excited. when i walked in it was completely empty and there was a guy behind the counter leaned over on his phone, looked up but didn't even move or acknowledge me. i walked to the cashier counter and there was a guy watching me from the back but said nothing. i stood there and had to google if they were even open because it was kinda uncomfortable. i wanted to pay with cash so i didn't want to use the self order screen. no one wanted to help or acknowledge me so i left. i was really disappointed since i was craving this my whole shift.
