19 Places For A Casual Meal Near NYU

"Like the one in Nolita, Tacombi’s Bleecker street location feels a little like a charming street in Mexico: there are murals, string lights, and lots of people who are happy to be there. They open at 11am everyday of the week, so come here for breakfast tacos at brunch or a weeknight dinner to reunite with your friend who you haven’t seen since they started their air-freshener startup." - hannah albertine, matt tervooren

18 Top NYC Restaurants for Gluten-Free Dining - Eater NY

"The hit taqueria mini-chain serves its tacos on corn tortillas, made fresh each day on-site. Each location has tacos inspired by the Yucatan and beachside taquerias in Mexico — including al pastor, black bean and sweet potato, and al pastor. The restaurant also serves sangrias by the pitcher and a roster of fresh juices, and there are seven other locations." - Eater Staff, Elizabeth Myong

The whole place feels like a retro Mexican beach cantina: bright colors, hand-painted signs, green bottles, and super photogenic corners everywhere. The fried fish taco was actually pretty good — crispy shell, fresh toppings, and a nice tangy sauce. The other tacos were just okay; a bit dry and under-seasoned for me. Come here if you’re into the vibe. Worth it for some cute pics, a refreshing fish taco, and an easy summer lunch.

Tacombi is a vibrant Mexican taqueria chain that started on the beaches of the Yucatán in 2006. Known for its authentic tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and refreshing drinks like watermelon juice and piña coladas, Tacombi offers a lively and welcoming atmosphere. Their menu highlights include tacos al pastor, baja crispy fish tacos, and corn esquites. The tortillas are made fresh daily, preserving the traditional flavors of Mexico. Tacombi has several locations in New York City, including spots in Nolita, Flatiron, and the Financial District. Each location maintains the same commitment to quality and authenticity, with friendly service and a casual dining experience.

Google
Flashy decor can't save average food. Tacombi offers visually appealing Mexican decor but fails to deliver on food quality. The pastor and asada tacos had dry, lackluster meat and questionable corn tortillas. Both the esquites (small with merely acceptable flavor) and orchata were unremarkable. While the bathroom was clean with necessary supplies, it's poor lighting and unfinished construction gave an unsettling atmosphere. Overall, tacombi might satisfy non Mexican palates but falls short on quality. All style, little substance.

I had such a great experience at Tacombi, and a big part of that was thanks to our server, Juan Carlos. He was incredibly kind, attentive, and made us feel truly welcomed from the moment we sat down. He took the time to explain the menu, made great recommendations, and checked in just the right amount to make sure we had everything we needed. His energy added to the fun and relaxed vibe of the restaurant. Thank you, Juan Carlos, for making our visit so enjoyable! I’ll definitely be coming back!

We stopped in for a quick bite and I was glad I did. This was by far the best Tacos I have ever eaten in my life. My daughter had the quesadillas and said they were the best! The staff were fun and friendly and welcomed us. People were also friendly there. Overall, I love this place and wish I had it in my neighborhood! The price was good and the food was great! Thank you for all you do - it is appreciated!

I have been frequenting this place for a little while now they've always been very good to me and my tastes, tomorrow is my birthday so I mentioned it and by chance I was granted with my usual meal complimentary on the house, just showing even further how much humility the people in this establishment have. 10/10 recommend this eatery (try the seared fish!)

The nachos were great. The paloma cocktail was delicious. Loved the vibe and atmosphere I cut a star because of the creepy bathroom

Google
Didn’t have the best service here. They didn’t come to our table for a while and didn’t bring us water or the drink we ordered until after we were finished with our meal. Food was good, service not so much. Atmosphere is nice though.

Yelp
Tacos in NYC? Crazy? Nope, these were legit! Tacombi fed us twice while visiting the area (and that's saying something because there's so many places we wanted to try). The restaurant is tucked into the corner of a building, surrounded by the busy streets, which gave it a unique open concept vibe that felt nice. We tried several tacos / drinks and loved them all. It really felt like a unique gem tucked into a busy city. That being said it's not really "city", this particular area is very home-y and welcoming. Everything was very good, service was good. If you want something a little different while in the area, give this place a try.

Yelp
Came here with a group of friends for a meal. We ordered a variety of items, and food came out as it was prepared, not served all at once, so some of us were done with our meal while others were still waiting for theirs. The place was not super busy, but the staff was super slow to serve our food and to check in with us the entire entering- taking our order, for water refills, to pay our bill, etc. It's an overpriced taco joint. Solid food, but not worth the price.

Yelp
Had a yummy dinner at Tacombi today! I went on a Tuesday ("Taco Tuesday"), so all the tacos were BOGO free which was great. In addition, I went during happy hour, so their drinks were also discounted. The restaurant has lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Its ambiance has a very authentic Mexican theme with a great color scheme and decorations. Ambiance rate 8.5/10. The tacos my boyfriend and I ordered were... 1. Baja Crispy Fish: This had a great flavor and the fish was nice and crispy. Rate 8/10. 2. Beef Birria: This was mediocre because I felt the brisket wasn't good quality. Plus, it lacked cheese. However, the consumé was good. Rate 6/10. 3. Al Pastor: The pork and spices mixed really well together making it very delicious. Rate 9/10. 4. Sinaloa Shrimp: The shrimp, spices, and sauces used on this taco gave it a yummy, flavorful kick. Rate 10/10. 5. Carne Asada: This was mediocre because overall it tasted bland. Rate 6/10. 6. Pollo Yucateco: This had a good, spicy flavor to it. Rate 8/10. 7. Seared Fish: The cod and spices paired nicely together making it very tasty. Rate 9/10. All the tacos were a good portion size and were all priced fairly. The service was good. They took the plates off the table as soon as we were finished with them which was nice. It took maybe 10-15 minutes for the food to come. Service/staff rate 8/10. Overall, I would definitely come back here for some delicious authentic Mexican tacos!

Yelp
It's a fun place to get drinks and tacos. I come here because I like the atmosphere - and it's cool how most of restaurant can be opened to the outside on a nice day.. But the food isn't all that great - it's just okay. And not worth the price for the small portions. After enough margaritas, I'll forget about that.

Yelp
I think the one thing that determines if I'm going to enjoy tacos at a place I try for the first time, it's usually by trying the beans and rice. Sadly, I was left extremely disappointed. The beans and rice come in a small bowl with two or three tortilla chips and 20% beans and 80% rice. The rice was pretty bland and dry. The beans really had no flavor so I tried the 3 sauces separately with it. Still couldn't finish it. Best thing I had was the chicken quesadilla, though it was more like a tostada. My sister enjoyed the fish taco, I felt the fish was a little dry but the toppings made up for it. Neither of us were huge fans of the sweet potato taco. It was a very different vibe inside than I expected but they play good music, and it's a little dark inside. They also have coat hangers near each table!

Yelp
After living in Houston for 30 years, we think we know TexMex (or maybe this is Mex?). Quick lunch. One of many NYC locations. Great service. Reasonably priced. Had sodas, chips and guac, rice and beans, and 3 tacos. Tacos are a bit skimpy at $7 (for shrimp) but overall a winner. Damages with tip for 2 was $55.

Yelp
You have to try the spot if you're looking for amazing tacos I got the Baja fish taco. It was phenomenal so flavorful the fish was cooked perfection. It was delicious. There salsas are created by the owner, and they are amazing. You can actually buy them at Whole Foods, but they make the perfect complement to the tacos. You can sit outside and have seating with heaters and you can also go inside for a warmer seat in the winter!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing taco spot in the West Village! These were by far the best birria tacos I've had in a long time. Everything from the corn esquites to the carne asada tacos were delicious. The staff was extremely friendly and efficient. The vibe is casual and you sit on stools similar to outdoor food vendors.
google avatar

Josh L.

Yelp
Recent dinner at Tacombi definitely hit the spot. The tacos are packed with well seasoned meat, the crispy fish was nicely dressed with slaw and sauce, the salsa are delicious and pack a nice little punch. The tostada was crispy with a flavorful avocado topping and the quesadilla just barely visible under the mountain of Al pastor. My michelada was nice but I'd give the agave wine margs a pass if you're a marg purist. Juan Carlos took great care of us. On hand just when we needed with what we needed, friendly, and left us plenty of time to chow and digest before sending us on our merry way. We really enjoyed the little cabana - it's nice when the COVID inspired street cabana matches the good vibes indoors so even the dog can enjoy the night out.

Yelp
Solid tacos venue in the city. Good portion of chips and guac although the chips weren't anything too special. Tacos were all tasty...fish, chicken, beef, etc. service was good and fast. Margaritas were decent. Cool vibe inside. Prices are reasonable. Bathrooms downstairs. Overall if you are looking for a taco fix in the city, I recommend checking this place out. I would come back!

Yelp
The best place for tacos and margs! Always great service and great food. I love the atmosphere at the Bleecker Street location. Always a great experience

Yelp
Every time I visit New York I have to get a vegan tostada from Tacombi! The chipotle sauce is the perfect addition to the perfectly crisp tostada. Their guacamole is also to die for. The staff has always been amazing and efficient with all of my to-go orders. You're in for a treat at any location you list with the interior transporting you straight to Mexico.

Yelp
Excellent Mexican food at reasonable prices in a casual atmosphere. Good spot for a quick lunch.

Yelp
Hot day, great tacos, great service. I love the open indoor outdoor of this location. Their bathroom was scary but clean.

Yelp
Such an amazing find in NYC and right off the subway! This is the cutest little Mexican restaurant that serves up absolutely delicious tacos! The service is great and fast too. So glad we tried this place from a recommendation from a friend and the reviews from Yelp. We got the Birria tacos, fish taco, carnitas taco, and a Al pastor gringa. The birria was by far, the best birria I've ever had. My husband agreed it was the best he's ever had as well. It was so flavorful and the meat was so tender. The tortilla was nice a crispy and the cheese was melted perfectly. The fish taco was absolutely delicious and the cod was fried perfectly so it had the right amount of crunch. I absolutely loved the sauce that came with it. The carnitas was melt in your mouth and so tender. The gringa was super tasty as well. The beans and rice were really authentic and delicious. This place is a must try while in NYC. It's incredible and I will be dreaming about it until the next time!

Yelp
This is a decent option for Mexican. The margarita pitcher and guacamole were the best part of the meal. We sat outside which luckily it was a nice enough night with the heaters. Service was helpful and friendly. Gluten Free: Would not be my first choice for gluten free but overall felt okay eating here. The waiter was not very familiar but checked with the chef to see what options were safe. Also confirmed the chips were safe. Initially when they brought out our tacos they had them on shared plates so my tacos were on the same plate as food that were not gluten free. When we brought this up they apologized and brought out separate ones and let us keep the others.

Yelp
They are SO fast here. We came as two on a Thursday night at 8 without reservations, but were seated immediately. They give you a sheet you can order off of, but they also came around to take your order. Food came out insanely fast. My burrito was good, my friends chips & guac and tacos were also good! Drinks weren't that strong, but they were tasty. They get two stars knocked off because they gave us the wrong bill and then when we asked for it adjusted, it took another 20 min. Otherwise, I would recommend checking them out.

Su W.

Yelp
Their corn esquites are my favorite thing on the menu. I wasn't able to find any place that made equites this well. Really inspired to make this at home. Love that they have BOGO tacos on Tuesdays. What a treat! :-) I stupidly thought it was BOGO for the same taco, but for clarity, you can select any tacos and they automatically apply it to the receipt. Their service was awesome. I'm not sure, but I think one of their chefs directly brought out the food to me. He was so sweet and kind. Also their decor is SUPER CUTE. I just love the thought they put into their marketing material and branding. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Adi M.

Yelp
Really great tacos. Not pricey and cool setting. Each one was better than the next. I ordered the crispy and seared fish tacos, carne asada and the birria-- my favorite being the crispy fish. Also really excellent spicy margs. Awesome place my only complaint is them rushing us out at the end and I could tell they were doing it to other parties as well. Kinda annoying but I guess they needed the tables.
google avatar

Tim O.

Yelp
Uncomfortable miniature seating arrangements but taco offerings meeting or exceeding Los Tacos quality. The burrito was disappointing--not stuffed well and because I was likely stereotyped as a small eater they had ignored the rest of my order ticket after the tacos, so I had to re-order the burrito. This is very much a come-as-you-are West Village spot.
google avatar

Liz C.

Yelp
Foods great. Always consistent. Ambience at this one is my fave in Manhattan. And Juan Carlos is funny.
google avatar

Mais S.

Yelp
I was surprised by this place!!! The service was fast and the tacos were good!! It's around $5-$7 each taco. They brought out our food fast. I would come here again for sure for when I want something to eat that's good and fast. It was busy but there are plenty of seats. It has a dark but nice ambiance.

Ethan M.

Yelp
Worst taco I've ever had seven dollars no cilantro, cheese or fresh lime. Taco fell apart didn't even give me an extra corn tortilla.
google avatar

Vincent N.

Yelp
Really love this place. I recently got back from Mexico City and the tacos coming from this outpost are some of the closest I can get to CDMX. I think this place rivals Los Tacos No. 1 but wish they had more casual outposts that didn't require you to get a table.
google avatar

Alison K.

Yelp
Stopped in on a whim to sit down and take a break from the sweltering heat. It was nice to sit down and relax with drinks and not be pressured to eat (we were on a DIY food crawl). We tried the margarita, rubio, and pina agua fresca. The rubio was really good, even better than the margarita, and the pina agua fresca was a yummy non alcoholic drink. They gave us plenty of water too. We had a couple of rounds and left feeling refreshed.
google avatar

Emma M.

Yelp
I ordered the carnitas tacos, the steak tacos, and the chicken tacos. My group also ordered a margarita pitcher and an order of chips/guacamole with a side of jalapeños. There were two different kinds of carnitas tacos except one of them wasn't gluten free. All of the tacos were delicious, but my personal favorite had to be the gluten-free carnitas tacos or the chicken tacos. I also ordered a side of guacamole an extra steak taco. The food was delicious and I loved how quickly they came to bring the menus, take our order, and deliver our food. The waiter was also really friendly. The only thing that I didn't love about my experience was that at the end when they asked for our credit cards to pay they took away our silverware and plates even though I ordered more food for the table. It felt as if they were trying to rush us out which wasn't great. Other than that I loved my experience and I would come here again.

Yelp
Delish food and cocktails! My server, Juan Carlos, was a fantastic server! Love the vibe here too.
google avatar

Yelp
Maria was absolutely amazing! I have food allergies and she took extra care to make sure absolutely everything I ate had none of my allergens OR cross contamination. Above and beyond what others generally do
google avatar

Yelp
Tacombi is always a favorite when we're in the Village and the sweet potato and black bean tacos are my go to, and I'm not even vegetarian. Juan Carlos was the best server we could ask for. No notes!

Yelp
delicious tacos, fantastic ambiance and server Juan Carols was so on top of things! We will come back for sure

Yelp
The tortillas are delicious. Great outdoor seating space as well! The staff is extremely friendly. 100 percent coming back

Yelp
Delicious cod tacos, vibes are immaculate and the general manager is fantastic! 10/10 recommend

Yelp
Great food and we loved Juan Carlos P - he is an absolute sweetheart. A great guy! Also the corn in the cup - highly recommend

Hannah A.

Yelp
Great margs & the tacos are fabulous! The ambience is very nice & pricing wasn't bad.
google avatar

Yelp
This was DELICIOUS! Some of the best Mexican food I've had in the city and the ambiance was immaculate! We started with the corn Esquites which was perfectly cheesy and topped with the lime was amazing. We also shared guac and chips for the table which was super yummy and fresh (with plenty of avocado relative to chips). I also had a Birria taco which was spectacular. The Birria taco was perfectly crispy and cheesy with just the right amount of Birria sauce on the side. We also had spicy margaritas which were the perfect compliment to the meal! The staff was also super lively and joking lots with our table. Overall, this was a great experience!
google avatar

Lexi O.

Yelp
Such amazing food and atmosphere! Smaller tables inside but still feels really homey. Also love they have outdoor seating that's cute (and more table space). You have to get an agua fresca(the watermelon is so delicious). Guacamole was really tasty, we all loved our tacos. I got the avocado tostada (so delicious) and sweet potato and black bean (tasty but tostado was even better). Also pictured is the seared fish taco, Al pastor, and one of the quesadillas. Everything was so delicious, you really can't go wrong! Reservations were also really seamless + no issues. Definitely recommend this location!

Serife K.

Yelp
If you are going to this location be prepared to kicked out as soon as you pay the check. They are very rude. We paid the check and chatting for about 3 minutes when the host cane is very and told us that we need to leave.
google avatar

Abby R.

Yelp
we love juan carlos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! good food too
google avatar

Cindy G.

Yelp
Average fried fish taco on a bit hard/dry corn tortilla. The watermelon agua fresco was tasty and refreshing. Too many foodie spots in the village to have precious real estate in your tummy taken up.
google avatar

Sofia G.

Yelp
The worst of the locations I've been to Horchata was mid af Marg pitcher was $55 and mostly ice, not good at all either lol Birria was also very not good and portions are so small. No chairs in the dining room, just stools. its just like sad to see one of my favorite chains put out a bad quality experience to keep up with inflation and the west village.
google avatar

Ella R.

Yelp
Tacombi heals. You can't go wrong with any of the tacos here but promise me you'll get the crispy baja fish. That's the real winner. Did you see the guac and chip ratio?? That's love right there. I'll be dreaming about the elote too. West Villlage location is large, warm, fun, and inviting. Perfect for a casual date, catching up with a friend, any occasion, really.
google avatar

Ashley W.

Yelp
The ambiance was really nice and casual. The carnitas tacos were really delicious! I would skip the guac though it was very plain in flavor but still very fresh.
google avatar

Kassandra F.

Yelp
Yummy fresh drinks. Pretty good tacos. Good service. Great for people watching. Just slightly smelly by restroom.
google avatar

Joseph C.

Yelp
I came here at the recommendation of a good friend. Tacos looked nice and were freshly made. Sadly, they were very average in taste. Service was a bit slow but fine. The open atmosphere was the selling point, very comfortable and breezy
google avatar

M S.

Yelp
Great service and food, especially for the price. They were also able to accommodate to our very low spicy tolerances!
google avatar

Craig N.

Yelp
Great food, service, and atmosphere! JC was the best. We had great weather so were able to sit with the big windows open and they accompanied our dog with a water bowl.
google avatar

Nicolas A.

Yelp
Always stop at Tacombi when in town! First time at the Bleecker location! Always the best staff and great food! Thank you JC! So good!

Melanie K.

Yelp
Our server, Juan Carlos was amazing! Food and drinks were perfect. Just what we needed.
