The 17 Best Tacos in the Oakland, Richmond, and the East Bay | Eater SF

"After becoming a sensation in the pandemic and later being forced to shut down her home operation, Tacos Mama Cuca is finally back with a food truck, and your first order has to be the taco Yaqui. Served on paper-thin flour tortillas, which are made by “Mama Cuca” herself, these larger Sonoran-style tacos include a heaping serving of asada, a grilled Anaheim chile, queso fundido, frijoles puercos (Sonoran-style refried beans), thinly sliced cabbage, and your choice of salsa. One is usually enough — Mama Cuca doesn’t skimp on ingredients here — but you’ll wish you could have two." - Lena Park

One of the Bay Area’s Best Taco Spots, Tacos Mama Cuca, Is Back as a Oakland Food Truck - Eater SF

"Tacos Mama Cuca is back. After the city of Oakland forced Maria Marquez to stop selling her popular tacos out of a lot next to her East Oakland home in July 2023, Marquez has now relaunched the business as a food truck, SFGATE reports. The business held its grand opening on Friday, February 23, and the truck is stationed along with a few other food trucks at 9000 International Boulevard, selling food Thursday through Sunday. It’s a welcome comeback, as Marquez’s Sonoran flour tortillas and North Mexican food were loved by locals who made the trek to her home. San Francisco Chronicle associate food editor Cesar Hernandez even named them among his favorite regional-style tacos in the Bay Area." - Dianne de Guzman

No bathrooms on site- it’s a food truck! Ordered the Al pastor and carne asada tacos, and Taco Yaqui asada. You gotta head to the salsa bar under the tent and dress up the tacos. Love the mango salsa and the pickled red onion. Really solid tacos, but I don’t think I’ll make a trip out here just for these.

The food was flavorful and it is a big portion. I had a taco yaqui with a cevada water. The taco yaqui has half of chile stuff with cheese and choice of meat and toppings on a flour tortilla. My child had a taco and a maracuya with mango water. The place was full and there was a line but it moved fast. I gave it a 3 start because they only take cash no card. It looks clean although it is a “taco truck” and you sit outside. The parking space is kind of limited. I didn’t see bathrooms so I’m not sure if there are any portables.

The tacos are good, the portion is excellent. The horchata was delicious and refreshing. They have a lot of salsas but I don’t think they need that many. One was so spicy that I couldn’t enjoy my taco, it didn’t taste like much, just spicy. I have a high heat tolerance but it was too much. The wait time was over an hour in line and another hour to receive my food. Not sure if it’s a one time situation but it didn’t make for a great experience. Tacos taste good though.

While the location may not be ideal, the food is truly exceptional! The delicious smoky flavor of the wood-grilled beef, combined with the excellent salsa bar, makes this a must-visit for fans of Sonoran-style tacos. The fact that we encountered another couple who had traveled all the way from Brentwood speaks volumes about the quality of this place.

Google
I finally made it to their new official location!! 🤩 The little corner is full of life, like a small Mexican food court. You find Tacos Mama Cuca on the back, there are covered tables and chairs to seat to eat, a wonderful table with veggies and salsas to dress up your tacos, and a man grilling corn cobs and small onions 😛 The menu is varied and the meat options delicious and generous! I had the famous taco Yaqui and a regular al pastor taco in flour tortilla. The meat on both was tender, perfectly seasoned and flavorful!! Do yourself a favor and pay them a visit, and don’t forget to tip your taquer@s! Show some love for affordable prices and amazing food 💗 🌮 🌯 🥑

Google
I loved them. Extremely Friendly Owner and Staff. Just a bit pricey for the size of each taco (the only reason for 4 stars) . I will definitely come back.

Google
The best Northern Mexico-style Mexican food. Authentic Mexican food; don't let the price fool you. It is recommended because you can add your own continental [ salsa with pineapple/ guacamole, cucumber, red onios, repollo, etc.].

Google
THE best bacon wrapped burrito in the Bay area. Follow them on Instagram as they move their food truck around. Customer for over 2 years. Exceptional customer service!

Yelp
The taco yaqui and lorenza, as always, hit the spot. Consistency is not an issue. Their new location precludes the legendary salsa bar (still present, though, at pop-ups), which is unfortunate, so salsa/toppings now come in plastic bags and cups. These servings are generous. Cash payment is preferred over Zelle.

Yelp
Very long wait -- Drove by this establishment a week ago and saw that there was a huge line. Drove by it today (still a long line) and decided to wait and see whats good. Waited in line at 5:24pm and ordered at 6:39pm then waited for my food until 740pm. Whole process took 2 hrs. Food -- ordered the special burrito w/ carne asada and 2 carne asada taco and 2 al pastor tacos. Make sure you check your order after you pick up they ended up just giving 4 carne asada. They also didn't include any toppings on the taco so you would have to put it on yourself at the salsa bar. The burrito was very heavy and dense and the bacon was crispy. The burrito is not like a traditional burrito, this one did not have rice and they load it with ALOT of melted cheese ( which is a plus). The meat was good, you can taste the bbq char which i loved. The salsa at the salsa bar all made fresh. Overall -- I wouldn't wait 2 hrs but if you drive by and see a short line, I would recommend giving it a try. Just make sure you double check your order and load up at the salsa bar. They also prefer cash but you can ask to pay with mobile pay.

Yelp
It may not be an ideal location, but the food is amazing! From the delectable smokey flavor of wood grilled beef, to the perfect salsa bar, if you're a fan of Sonoran style tacos this is the spot for you! We sat down next to a couple that came out from Brentwood, so you know it's good!

Yelp
It's all in the tortilla! Just look at the picture and you can tell how special this place is. The tortilla has a special texture to it that I can't really explain: a little gumption and chew. Meat is grilled and seasoned well. The salsa bar offerings is the best between salsa, pickled accouterments, and veggies. They moved away from Oakland so we're sad about that but if I ever drive through Hayward.. this would be worth the drive for.

Yelp
Had a nice lunch date with the wife-- showed up right at 1pm and ordered a couple carne asada tacos a piece, made sure to top them with the pineapple salsa. There is definitely a general kick to the tacos, but those picked onions are on another level and NOT recommended if you're not into spicy food (you need to love spicy food). My wife put them on her taco and was eating-- although the food was good, her mouth was on fire. I had them on my plate but didn't put them on my taco. Tried one of them at the end and started coughing. Definitely will be coming back to have a quesadilla but will leave the onions alone... not for the weak!

Yelp
Tacos Mamá Cuca is in their new location on the Oakland/Emeryville border. They continue to serve up unique Sonoran delicacies, but I cannot deviate from the delectable taco yaqui. Their salsa bar is second to none, and the service is always super friendly. If you plan to eat on location, be prepared to dine on small plastic stools. It's worth it though!

Yelp
I like their sonora styled tacos, and their self-serve salsa bar. The Taco Yaqui was also very good. Great flavor, a little on the greasy side, but I enjoyed it. Their spicy beans too was also surprisingly delicious. When we were waiting for our food, they brought over a free taco for us, how nice! Definitely would come back!

Yelp
We ate at the Hayward location food truck with a charcoal grill. Not fancy, but chairs were available. The steak was a little tough, to be honest, but the superb flour tortillas, the salsas, and the hospitality more than made up for it. I'm really glad we tried this place, and I would go back anytime I was in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Awesome food every time we go! They moved locations to 230 Jackson St in Hayward about a month ago, and this one has a really nice fenced area with 4 picnic tables to eat the food. Taco Yaqui and regular tacos are our usual orders, and it's all consistently fantastic! The salsa bar has lots of options that are always fresh, and the aguas frescas are also good. The folks who work there are really nice and always take the time to say hi!

Yelp
Tacos Mama Cuca sells traditional eats from Sonora, Mexico. they make their flour tortillas in small batches. their carna asada is grilled over mesquite coal. they are @Korner Kitchen (1014 Fruitvale.) on the weekends. the posted address is wrong. offerings: burrito especial, chorreda, taco yaqui, lorenzas, carmelos, tacos asada. eats: burrito especial (15) -large amount of grilled carna asada mixed with a smoked green pepper, melted cheese, avocado slice, chorizo flavored beans. wrapped with bacon strips on the outside. all grilled on a flat grill till crisp. -lots of garnishes available: grtilled onions, avocado salsa, salsa roja, lime squeeze, smoky salsa from a large molcajete. -size of burrito is bigger than average. the grilled bacon added another layer to the flavors embedded within burrito. salsa on the side added another dimension. almost couldn't finish. -my tummy really enjoyed the burrito. my tastebuds didn't taste much. it didn't register much of the flavors. not surprisingly, i tested positive for covid 2 days later. (loss of taste is one of the symptoms). teke outs: -outside seating was available. there was a pop up faire of sorts @Korner Kitchen. -parking lot nearby as well as street parking. -Tacos Mama Cuca is on Chron's list of recommended tacquerias.

Yelp
They've finally reopened as a taco truck at 9000 International Blvd., Oakland! Delicate, translucent flour tortillas are handmade and small batches, using techniques from Sonora, Mexico. Delicious tacos and burritos, wonderful mesquite, fire grilled meats, unique Sonoran flavors, a dozen different items on the fixings bar including cebollitas (grilled scallions), guacamole, and many fabulous salsas including roasted pineapple and tomato, and barley agua fresca. The people and vibe are super warm and welcoming, especially Mama Cuca herself!

Yelp
So disappointed with the service my boyfriend and I received here,I was very excited to try this spot bc my cousin had shared a video on his ig story and the food looked so good! The food was not the problem as it was good but the problem was the customer service we received from the owner (it's a women) from what I've heard. So we ordered asada tacos and a chorreada al pastor and when I started to fix my plate with the salsas I noticed they gave us asada instead of al pastor so my boyfriend went to let the women know and the guy who was working there that we got the wrong meat. The women looked so irritated and told my boyfriend "you ordered asada " my boyfriend said yes I did the tacos were asada but the chorreada was al pastor and the receipt was there too and you can see she had wrote down Al pastor so she messed up and the other guy who was helping told her and my boyfriend "yeah you're right she messed up so in this case we will give you another one "and the lady said "well we will need to throw this one to the trash then!!" She said it Hella rude too so my boyfriend just told them "yeah you do what you gotta do thank you " so then they give us the other chorreada with Al pastor and this time they do not include the little cheese and beans taco they added to the chorreada previously. That was so petty of her to do. So anyways we will not be going back! Customer service is the first thing we look at when going to support any business and if it's not there then there's no point in me supporting it.

Yelp
Exceptionally delicious! Came here for the al pastor, but ended up getting the chorizo and carne asada because they'd run out. Zero disappointments, everything was incredibly tasty. They gave out tons of toppings, all the salsas were well made, and the tortillas were excellent. Will definitely be back as many times as I can.

Yelp
We had a bit of a wait to get in, but it was worth it, ...I recommend bringing a canned beverage of choice while you wait, just in case there's a wait. I loved the taco Yaqui! The salsas were great too. Cool vibe and loved the smell of the grilling food as my hunger grew.

Yelp
Loooooong line. Ran out of everything while waiting. People were cutting the line and eating off to the side of the grill. Was not organized well. Hopefully they improve. Food was average. No parking, no restroom - it's in a residential home's backyard.

Jake L.

Yelp
One of my favorite taco spots in Oakland. The meat is delicious, the tortillas hand made, and the salsa and topping selection is on point. Glad they have a more permanent setup now.

Yelp

Yelp
Amaaaazziinnggg delicious complex flavors. Tortillas are the best. A definite must visit in the Bay Area! Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
The best Mexican food on the side of the border no doubt nothing compares to its authenticity.
