"This is a Sunset Park institution, and while we slightly prefer the food at Tacos El Bronco two blocks away, Matamoros is definitely the more enjoyable place to hang out. The loud dining room tends to be packed with groups and families sharing platters of tacos and big plates of mole poblano. Get a paloma or margarita and some double tortilla tacos, like the carnitas or lengua, plus at least one order of the queso fundido with chorizo." - Matt Tervooren

Google
Really good hole in the wall. As this taco shop has a butcher shop smell of all ready cut up meat's still my pastor and bisteak taco and cost is pretty good. Definitely a good hidden gem.

erich stender

Google
The gringas are my go to here used to work down the street and go for lunch a couple times a week. Forsure worth the stop if you’re hungry and passing by

Michael Burnett

Google
A very good place to eat. Authentic Mexican food. The service was fast and friendly

John Tucker

Google
There was a toothpick right in the center of my jalapeño bacon wrap. It stuck the back of my throat & I choked. Not sure how I should go about the situation so I am leaving a review..

Google
If you prefer good food over fancy atmosphere, eat here. Texas has a knack for great tacos from places attached to convenience stores, and this is no exception. The gorditas are large. Try one with cheese; it's grilled. Then have some tacos al pastor. Not because you're still hungry, but because they're delicious.

Fernanda Mosquera

Google
Que ricos tacos!! Amazing tacos. So glad it was open on a Sunday night. I’m planning to come back!!! I recommend the carnitas, Al pastor and La gringa flour tacos!! Yummmm

Jasmin

Google
Literally the best tacos & the tortas I LOVE IT. I been coming here for 10 years. Still my favorite place to dine at by myself now. & it warmed my heart seeing them feed a homeless person that was begging for food. They’re the sweetest people and if you’re reading this review should definitely eat here.

Google
Verily, I say unto thee, this Mexican eatery is quite grand indeed. I was served a delectable burrito with all haste. The taste was most pleasing to my palate. I shall be visiting this establishment once again in the future. I highly recommend it to all who seek scrumptious sustenance.

Yelp
These are the best tacos I've had in a while. There's no crazy combinations and ingredients but simple classic tacos done well. A hole in the wall place that's part of a gas station and two ladies working behind the counter that are very nice. Definitely going back!

Haley T.

Yelp
We were debating where to get tacos for a little bit since our usual place is closed on Sundays. We decided to try this place and we have no regrets!!!! Everything was really great and well packaged. I really loved how the potatoes were cooked in my tacos. This will be our new stop. Really glad we found a good gem.

Yelp
Matamoros is the closest taco spot to my apartment complex, literally a stone's throw away. So when I first moved to Austin, I visited a few times out of pure convenience between unpacking boxes and getting settled into a new city. Unfortunately, they did not meet the expectations that all the other positive reviews had set for me. All the tacos I've eaten from here (mostly chicken, carnitas, and pastor) were dry and made without love for the food. Sadly, the meat consistently lacks tenderness, flavor, and juiciness. Seems I will be continuing my hunt for my favorite local taco truck in North Austin!

John M.

Yelp
I will tell ya this place is a whole in the wall joint, but hey sometimes those are seriously the best. Service was great, fast and friendly. Lots of to go orders but they do have a small dining room. We were on a taco quest as we were headed to Walnut Creek. Tacos with pipping hot and very tasty. I wouldnt hesitate to stop again. Granddaughter loved them as did we.

Martin C.

Yelp
Makes me remember tacos back in gtl, always keep clean something i admire. hookemm

Yelp
#NotTexMex ---- we are talking true Mexican food This place is so good, the tacos are fresh, service is fast and the salsas are "spot on". ***Make note, they only take cash....and the menu is in Spanish*** The Carnitas tacos are the best I have had in Austin. Generous portion, grilled onions that still have a snap and the meat is moist (not greasy). The El Pastor are also excellent and not over spiced, nor are the over-cooked (like several places). The breakfast tacos also deserve a shout out. $1.00 for a 2-ingredient taco M-F before 11am. But, I always trick it up and add an ingredient or two. Still very affordable. I have found my NEW favorite taco joint!

C.J L.

Yelp
The service was excellent as well as the food. We'll be back. I was full on one $4 taco, AMAZING

John T.

Yelp
I'm from LA so I often crave no frills tacos with just good flavored meat, cilantro, onions, and a good salsa. Matamoros does this. Kinda. There provided a good amount of grilled onions on the side but put lettuce and slices of tomato on my tacos. Ahh, no big deal, I'm not that picky so I just took them off but will remember to ask for just cilantro and onion next time. What I ordered: 2 carne asada tacos 3 carnitas The seasoning and flavor were excellent and there provided huge servings of protein. Their salsa options were pretty spicy so that was a plus too. I will definitely be back, just no lettuce or tomatoes on my tacos please, it reminds me of Taco Bell.

Alondra H.

Yelp
As a Mexican, this place is definitely delicious!! I love their bistec special tacos, it comes with cheese, avocado and grilled onions!! I've supported them since 2014 and wow still delicious! I recommend to carry cash so you don't pay the fee but they still accept card! Def a spot to come

Gnet A.

Yelp
This is a great spot to stop by when you're in the neighborhood. Its a small spot next to a little store with some parking in the front. We asked someone at the body shop we were at to recommend a place with some good breakfast in the area and they lead us to this one with high ratings, so away we went. They have their own entrance but it is adjacent to the store as well. They just sell food here, but you can buy a drink from the store. They have good prices for a decent amount of food and the food is delicious. They make it to order which means the food is fresh, hot & taste like homemade comida(food). I had two of the bacon & egg breakfast tacos for $1 each and the hubby had the Migas breakfast plate; he devoured it. Lol They give you a generous amount of meat in those tacos, so I was very happy about that. The lady that took the order and made the food is super sweet and full of sunshine. There is a limited amount seating and two TVs. They also have other items on the menu besides breakfast which i'm sure will be delicious too. Ill have to come back and try a torta. Check this spot out. Its worth it. Yummmmm!

Dan L.

Yelp
These are some of the most underrated tacos in Austin. When we drive here, we drive past multiple places with huge lines and are often greeted by an empty store. The salsa bar has more variety than Povlo's and the salsas stand up very well in comparison, especially if you like salsas with some heat. Taco meats can be a bit hit or miss, but the meat is generally good and the portions are generous (the tacos as overflowing and hard to eat without some filling spilling out) considering the tacos are $2. BTW, the pollo, which is often an afterthought, is pretty decent here!

Jamie S.

Yelp
The best tacos I have had in all of the Austin area! The meat was tender and flavorful, the tortillas were perfect and didn't fall apart, the grilled onions were cooked just right so they were sweet, but still had a snap to them. The cheese and avocado were the perfect amount of fat... salsas were also perfection. Craving these tacos just thinking about them

Greg G.

Yelp
The carne asada plate was excellent and reminded me of San Antonio. Very limited seating, be warned.

Belle T.

Yelp
My favorite taco spot in ATX. Tiny little spot inside a convenience store, yes, but this lady knows what's she's doing in the kitchen. Another person said they don't take credit cards here but they DO NOW! Authentic, excellent and perfect bistec tacos on corn tortillas... topped with avocado slices and queso fresco.OMG! Try the green sauce and ask for a couple cucumber slices to go with. Awesome little spot! Nothing fancy but soooooooo delicious!

Arati S.

Yelp
Food. Coma. Thank you Yelp. For if it wasn't for you, we would've been deprived of the wonderful Mexican food offered by this establishment known as Matamoros Tacos. What more can I say about their delicious offerings? These are some of the best tacos I've had compared to all the taco trucks I've been too. Their chicken quesadilla was AAH-MAZING....!!!! Delicious queso melted on a corn tortilla with char-grilled chicken served with lettuce, tomato and grilled golden onions. The different sopes were also delicioso. We had the chicken sopes that came topped with queso, beans, lettuce and tomatoes served with a side of those grilled onions again. The quintessential taco truck; open LATE late, delicious mouth-watering authentic Mexican food and easy on the wallet, Matamoros Tacos is a place y'all GOT to try!

Ashley E.

Yelp
Best damn tacos in my life here in Austin! The carne asada was fireeee and their salsa bar is amazing! Must try!

Everado F.

Yelp
I love coming here with my family we come often! Which is why I am aware of the quality of their food and lately it's been lacking a little my favorites are their tortas but lately they've haven't been really giving me enough food meaning carne in the torta the last few times I've been here they have been really stingy with their food and by stingy I mean literally 4 pieces of meat of al pastor :(

Josh R.

Yelp
Great taco truck! I've been here a few times now and it's been consistently good each time. The carnitas, pollo, and barbacoa have been my favorite so far. They offer some covered seating and the truck sits on the property of a gas station if you need to grab drinks other than what the truck has. Parking is somewhat limited. Cash only, ATM inside of the gas station.

Starr W.

Yelp
When I tell you this is the best Mexican Taco truck in Austin I AINT LYIN! I have been coming here for about three years. MOST of the time everything is yummy and fresh. They make their own tortillas, and sometimes grill their jalepenos. For the most part I know what I am getting when I come. THey also have a restaurant further down Lamar and just opened another truck! This is definitely the place to come to after you have been drinking because they stay open late til like 3 or 4 and they open right up at 7 or 8. You MUST try this truck if you are one of those weary of food trucks. Most authentic Mexican I have ever had from a truck baby, and I am from Los Angeles.

Teddy S.

Yelp
To all the people complaining about the price, or service can suck balls... for $2-$4 tacos , this beats most taco franchises in the state!! The flavor is there, the meat is tasty , the veggie are as fresh as heb , probably better since they source it from the vendors directly ... order from the menu , if u don't speak Spanish just point and smile , how hard it is , this is texas ! Learn some spanish pendejo!! I will def be back, all my Chef crew rave about the taco I brought to the restaurant . If they approve , then it's good

paul n.

Yelp
great tacos. been going there for 8+ years. one thing i noticed and don't like is the fact that they no longer have pickled carrots and jalapenos at the salsa bar...

Kat B.

Yelp
Quite possibly one of the best Barbacoa tacos I've ever had. My husband and I each got a taco and shared a liter Coke (real sugar!) And everything cost us $7.00. My husband got carnitas and he is super picky but he said it was awesome- my barbacoa was great too. They give you tons of meat too, so you pay little but get a lot!! This truck accepts cash only, so keep that in mind! They have breakfast tacos as well more hearty tacos. I'm glad I stumbled across this one on yelp. Delicious !!

Marcus R.

Yelp
I spent all four years of my time at UT searching for authentic and addicting street tacos and was extremely upset that I had this place for the first time during my senior year. The location is kept very simple next to a gas station and a small outdoor dining area next to the truck. The staff is friendly and quick to take everyones order as the parking lot can get pretty packed at times. Taking a bite of these tacos takes me right back to fond memories of the ones I would enjoy in Mexico as a kid. Definitely the most authentic I found during my time in Austin, not to mention the most delicious.

Sandra C.

Yelp
Best Tacos on Lamar !! They are full of flavor and great customer service. My go to order is 2 tacos de bistec, 1 tostada de pollo and last but definitely not least 1 barbacoa taco on a flour tortilla. To finish of the salsas are great they have a spicy red salsa and a mild creamy green salsa that goes perfect with my tacos !! Love this place so much! If you are ever im the area definitely need to make a pit stop here.

Will C.

Yelp
Best tacos i have had in Austin! Most places I have been to sell tex-mex style tacos which is meh.... If you are looking for authentic style Mexican tacos, Matamoros is the place for you. Don't let the store front deter you away. The food here is phenomenal! At 2 dollars a taco, they are a fairly decent size. You won't be disappointed eating here.

Annie C.

Yelp
Cheap. Delicious. Authentic. It totally reminds me of a little taco shop in Mexico. I ordered the taco al pastor and fajita beef tacos and they were both delicious. My friend ordered 2 al pastor tacos. For both of our meals, it was only $8.50. If you're looking for a classy joint, this is not the place but if you're looking for a cheap pizza quick service and delicious food, then come and bring your cash. They do not accept credit cards.

Oscar R.

Yelp
They are out of touch with the times with out this COVID-19 happen they only except cash they don't believe in cashless payment

Tracey S.

Yelp
This taco truck is ideal in most ways: it is open until 3 am, it is supercheap, and it is delicious. It is located in the north end of a Conoco gas station at the North Lamar @ Neans intersection. The staff is friendly and willing to put up with my terrible questions in Spanglish. Why eat fast food when this place serves freshly-cooked, hot, delicious food at even cheaper prices? There were several things on the menu I have to look up the definition for. They have a steak taco special (Bistec Especial or something) that is only $1.75 and is incredibly delicious. I've also had the chicken tacos. The tacos here are my favorite in Austin. Unlike Taco More, there is no salsa bar, though. Every time I go, I'm the only non-Mexican among lots of customers so it must be a pretty authentic place.

Kathy H.

Yelp
This place really surprised me. I've had really good food at food trailers before but how can I get lucky enough to find a place this good so close to my work? Don't let the location (in the parking lot of a Conoco gas station) scare you away. I've had several different things here before and have really enjoyed them all. Tortas, tacos, carnitas, fajitas...they are all yummy. Great value for your $ here. On a side note, these are the same people that have the Matamoros Tacos in the Metro Star Market down the road. They have a little sit down area inside there. Make sure you have cash because they don't accept plastic.

Janine D.

Yelp
Nice hole in the wall taco shop exactly what I wanted and very helpful. Fresh pico & a liter bottled coke made it a great dinner.

Tina N.

Yelp
Okay I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. I LOVE their corn tortilla tacos they are the best I have ever had since Fuel City in Dallas. The barbacoa is very fatty but not dripping fat everywhere. My mouth is watering right now just thinking about it. They are cash only and are open until 2am. If you catch them earlier in the morning, you can get their especial. GO TRY IT NOW!!! also-- you WILL miss it, it is in a Conoco (gas station) coming from Kramer going on Lamar towards Ginsberg it will be on the right across the street from the Asian supermarket.

Andy B.

Yelp
A lovely dive taco place with amazing tacos. Grab yourself a cane sugar coke from the gas station next door and pay this place a visit. Bistek and Carnitas were amazing. No complaints. 4 tacos for $8!

Sydney A.

Yelp
Best tacos I've eaten in Austin! Their meat is flavorful and the grilled onions are amazing. I've had their tacos and quesadillas and it's absolute heaven.

SomebodyinAustin ..

Yelp
Just tried the bistec tacos on corn. Uh, YESSSS! Great flavor and I'm going back tomorrow!

Ashley I.

Yelp
Barbacoa wasn't seasoned, but their 3 sauces were tasty. Ill probably go back and try it again, just with a different meat. Everything was super fresh.

Ronnie G.

Yelp
Delicious and authentic but they get your order wrong every time, I've been here multiple time because my husband is obsessed and the food is good but they get my order wrong everyone time. I will not complain about about the taste but it leaves an empty feeling knowing you are stuck eating something you did not order. And your stuck eating it because the employees don't care, they will fight it to the end. Ugh. I hope I never have to come here again. My husband will order bistek and happily eat tripas because he would r complain. I on the other hand feel like I should receive what I paid for, now what they choose for me to eat!!! Bad service.

Justin L.

Yelp
I've been in Austin for at least 2 weeks for work and have been here a solid 7 nights for dinner. This place is amazing.

Nicole H.

Yelp
My husband and I just finished eating here. By far the best AUTHENTIC Mexican tacos I've ever had. Kind staff and delicious tacos! Can't wait to come back.

Brent B.

Yelp
Great tacos and service. Unless your some idiot like davito V living in his mothers basement on his $4 teddy graham allowance.

Morgan D.

Yelp
Migas Sunday this morning took place at a little spot up north called Matamoros Tacos. If you go here, don't judge it by its appearance! It's connected to a convenience store and just about everything is in Spanish. The food though? Well, it's just about as close to authentic as you will get on this side of the border. The sweet ladies in the kitchen cook up a mean plate of Migas, with a little spice and a lot of love. If you want REAL, homemade Mexican food, go check out Matamoros!

Travis D.

Yelp
*****reader note: i rate based on ambiance and yumminess of food. i never consider service in my rating (no matter how bad or good)****** My go to place in Austin. $2 tacos, down to earth food. I order the same thing every time 2 pastors (they marinate it differently than other places but still great), 1 barbacoa, 1 chicharron. GGEZ. Food: 5/5 Ambiance: 3/5 Worth? ALWAYS

Mercedes M.

Yelp
Delicious! We had been shopping across the street at the Asian food market & wanted to try something new. I looked up nearby restaurants on yelp and came across this place. Delicious! I had the Barbacoa GordiQueso & I'm so glad we came across this place so randomly, because I'll definitely be back whenever I crave legit, fresh & very tasty Mexican food!

Brianne M.

Yelp
This is by far my favorite Taco stand in Austin, and soon will be yours too if you dig authentic tacos. I have been here several times and continue to be impressed. After trying other taco stands I'm constantly reminded why I love this place so much. I have tried several things and anything I get is pretty much always delicious. My favorite thing would have to be hands down the barbacoa torta it's so flavorful, seasoned and cooked just right. The line can get to be pretty long especially on the weekends, so be prepared to wait a little bit but I promise it's well worth the wait. They open at 7 am for all the early birds and stay open until 3 am for all you night owls. This is definitely a place you should stop by at least once!

Doryan R.

Yelp
I just had a religious experience. And I think I'm going to be paying for it for awhile. So, my friend from El Paso has been helping me find the best torta in town. He's even more picky than I am. He swears that when he was growing up, his mother would make him a torta with no meat, but a cheese chile relleno inside. "Huh?" you ask? Exactly my response. Well, he likes this place so much that he went back last Friday and discovered that they serve Chile Rellenos on Fridays as the special. So, with his knowledge of Spanish (much better than mine), he convinced them to make him a Chile Relleno Torta for $6.50. Today, he calls me with a plan; "Hey man, I'm going to go get that really good torta bread from Chuy's Panderia and take it to Matamoros and see if they'll make us some Chile Relleno Tortas on that awesome bread!" Well, I'm never one to stop a man who is so motivated about a crazy food idea. The elusive fifth star is for putting up with his insanity. The ladies were really very nice to do this for us, and didn't seem to mind at all. We ate there and they brought the sammies out with a side of grilled onions and a grilled jalapeno. I should've stopped halfway. Hell, physically, I wanted to stop, but I knew that sammy wouldn't keep. The best sammies rarely do. Sooooooo good. Soooo cheesy. And just a huge freaking sandwich full of awesomeness. No amount of yardwork is going to work this off, so I may as well just lay here and struggle to breathe. So yeah. If you can speak enough Spanish and are nice enough, these folks will pretty much make you anything you can put together in your head. Me? I'll likely stick with their chicken torta. It's filling enough, and I doubt I'll be hungry for at least a week off that one I had today.

Christopher L.

Yelp
YES GURL. Came here with my friend Tina (who has apparently patroned the trailer before in a non trashy or whoreish way AS IT MAY otherwise have been surmised) for some late night grubbing. I was enthralled with the tacos al pastor and carnitas! Barbacoa was alright too, but I preferred its puerco neighbors at this particular food stand. My trio of tacos was so satisfying, I decided to order something else (counter-intuitive, I realize..) and was happy with the al pastor sopas as well!! Cash only, open late! ^LIKE ME. HA, a HA!! haaaa...

Kelly W.

Yelp
Carnitas or barbacoa gordita, con aguacate. Para aqui, por favor. Salsa verde. Oh, y uno tenedor, y uno cuchillo, por favor. If she asks about the onions, you want these onions. This all the spanish you need to know to have your taste buds sweetly caressed at Matamoros. It will cost you $4.75 with tip. She always gets a tip.

Lisa L.

Yelp
So my review is for the Matamoros inside the Metro Star Mart. I ordered breakfast tacos for my family. Lets just say nobody liked them, my kids were not happy with their tacos. First off, the flour tortillas were hard, I had to tear off all the ends of the tortillas. Also they forgot to add potato to 12 of my 16 tacos. Lastly we love our salsa with our tacos, that's one of the things we look for in a taco joint. Well, the green salsa was just ok, but the red salsa (which by the way we all fight over when its good) nobody touched, we all agreed that it was not good.

Brian S.

Yelp
Best authentic tortas in Austin. The meat is good quality is consistent. It is hard to find authentic Mexican food lIke this in town.

Jin N.

Yelp
Ever wondered what a REAL taco tastes like? Tired of the tex-mex americana imitation? Tired of waiting in line behind hipsters and paying for overpriced tacos? Then wait no longer! Matamoros on the outside looks like a modest recreational (Like that of breaking bad) but beyond its simple grungy exterior lies the heart of a true contender. The barbaqoa in this place is out of this world. Comes out to you HOT. Like...if you ever put a hot pocket in the microwave for too long hot. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about. Comparable to barbaqoas found in Chihuahua and Oxaca. Gelatinous, fatty, meaty, all the things you want to quiet that inner voice inside your head...NO....not now STEVE. The down points are that the sauces could be a little bit better. Lime was also a little old and dry. Guess they were trying to give it character. Meh. Do's: Barbaqoa Tacos with corn tortillas Barbaqoa Tortas Barbaqoa Don't: Skip out on this place! Judge it by its looks.
