Best lengua (tongue) and cabeza (head meat) tacos in the entire city, IMHO.
A true south OKC institution -- and with damn good reason. (This place has been here around a quarter of a century. Think about it -- that says a lot in a town that's filled with bad Mexican joints that come and go like winter head colds.)
Tacos San Pedro offers generous portions of tasty food at reasonable prices.
It'll almost always be busy when you go in, and, unless you're Hispanic, you'll be in the minority. ALWAYS.
And yes, that's a very good sign.
(See, I almost always judge a Mexican restaurant by how many white folks I see in there versus Hispanic folks. You definitely want to go where the preponderance of customers is, well, brown. TRUST ME. There's plenty of bad Tex-Mex crap in this town that caters toward dumb Anglos. And it's CRAP. GO HERE INSTEAD.)
This place has an à la carte menu, so don't sashay in thinking that you're going to be greeted by a big basket of chips, complete with salsa and queso.
Nope -- you'll pay for that here. (And that's OK, as the portions are huge and the restaurateur keeps his cost low by making you order à la carte. Smart move.)
The chip and salsa plate is only five bucks or so, and comes with a side of the house guacamole.
The chips and salsa are bottomless, too, so you can always get that refill if you insist, and at no extra charge.
By the bye, you'll order at the counter, not at your table. Just put on your big girl panties and stand in line.
The Wet Burrito is a house specialty, and you really owe it to yourself to sample it. (It's massive -- big enough to satisfy the biggest appetite.)
The tortas are large and fully stuffed and dressed. (I suggest going with the pastor meat. It's a personal favorite.)
The flan here is surprisingly bland, though. If you must get a dessert, nab the Tres Leches. (I won't lie. The flan disappointed me. I expected more egg yolk-y richness, and not so, well, bland a custard.)
The horchata's very good, as is the Jamaica. (I'm pretty sure that the aguas frescas are made on site, but can't promise you that. Whatever the case, the ones I've had are top rate.)
Parking can be tough if the lot's full. That's a fact, Jack. (That said, though, a full parking lot is a very good sign. Think about it.)
The staff is upbeat, friendly, and helpful. That part is always consistent.
Go here and avoid all that northside Anglo Tex-Mex crap.
You''ll thank me later for my sage advice, kid.
