Eugene’s Tacovore Has Opened a Taqueria in Portland - Eater Portland

"Tacovore, the Portland outpost of a popular Eugene-based taqueria, has opened on Fremont with everything from mole verde tacos to tempeh chorizo rice bowls. The restaurant’s menu is entirely gluten-free, and tortillas can be swapped with butter lettuce for those on low-carb diets. The restaurant is also kid-friendly, with a kid’s menu featuring 'grilled cheese tacos.' Tacovore’s tacos are heavily accessorized, topped with various slaws, cremas, and pickled vegetables." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Great atmosphere, service and food! We got chicken tinga, shrimp, chicken and carnitas tacos. The shrimp isn’t grilled which is my preference for shrimp tacos…delicious nonetheless. We also got the chips, salsa and guacamole. The adult beverage selection is good too. Can’t wait to go back!

Google
Tasty food, good drinks and great vibes. I had some tacos and a margarita and everything was really good. A little but pricey though in my humble opinion. But good to have a dedicated gluten free mexican restaurant in town. Thanks!

Google
This place is so cute inside and has lots of outside seating as well. The food was delicious, the drinks were great too! The staff and other patrons were super friendly and welcoming. They also had delicious Vegan food so we will definitely be back and recommending to others. 🤤

Google
Amazing tacos! This is my hubby's and my favorite taco place by far. It has fun daily specials, great drinks, excellent hot sauces, homemade tortillas, and great options for veggie and pescetarian folks. Literally so delicious, just go here and have your mind blown. I will share photos someday when I remember not to immediately eat my food when it arrives.

Google
The most expensive tacos I've eaten at ~$5 ea, but ethically/locally sourced, so understandable. Tried carnitas and two types of fish tacos. Nothing was impressively flavorful, sadly. Messy AF, but I've had better $1 tacos from a truck. Don't bother with the boop of guac you get from the chips & guac-guac for 3-4 chips and pricey.

Brandon Hewitt

Google
The best tacos I've ever had! Especially enjoyed the carnitas tacos! So amazing to go out to eat at a restaurant that's totally gluten free and easily made dairy free too! The cashew crema was delicious! Great neighborhood, easily parked our large van in their parking lot.

Google
Most dishes need seasoning. Decent vegetarian options. Can visit once. Don't try the bowl, rice is undercooked or old and everything lacks flavor and salt. Only taco I liked was the tofu one. Although it's nicer to eat it like a salad.

Anna Rose Deaton-Zaayer

Google
The specials are so fun! Every day a different veggie, carnivore and seafood option. I enjoy topping a salad or bowl with the seafood special. Oh, and the queso & chips are a good addition. Best queso I’ve had in town. Service is always great. Thanks guys!

Yelp
It was my first time trying Tacovore. The passion fruit margarita was delicious! I would definitely get cocktails here again and re-order the cauliflower taco. I wasn't a fan of the smoky tofu because of the smokiness but I think that's an individual preference. I like how you can get your sauces in the fridge. And the food was prepared quickly. I thought that the chips and guacamole were pricey due to the small portion of guacamole from the appetizer. The guacamole was also too citrusy for my individual preference.

Yelp
Came 2 nights in a row because I was really pleased the first night. Came back the second night at last call and was told I could only order to go, which I did. When my food came, there were still at least 5 tables dining, socializing, and drinking, so I asked if I could eat my food inside since there were people still seated and enjoying the ambiance. They told me I wasn't able to eat inside and needed to take my food elsewhere. I went and sat at the tables outside in the cold of night and rain, and watched as all the others still seated enjoyed their food and beverages inside. Sometimes it's the little things that matter, especially to a return customer. Hopefully someone From the management team reads this and makes some corrections, or addresses this with the staff. This score isn't based off the food, it was based off of a customer service experience.

Yelp
Would you wait 25 minutes just to place your order on a weekday? I wasn't sure while I waited, but after eating I'd say yes. Next time I would probably just place an order to go ahead of time. This place was recommended by me to a friend. Lots of inside and outside seating. Absolutely packed for a weekday dinner. They seem to be a bit under staffed for the volume. The margarita was great and the tacos were loaded and delicious. I also got the side of vegetables which were different and a nice touch. I tried the specials (fish and carnivore) and both were tasty but a bit spicy for what I would usually get. I also got the chicken and it was perfect!

Yelp
my partner has symptomatic celiac disease and we could order anything off the menu freely and safely here! tacos were INCREDIBLE, salsa options were awesome & the vibe in there was just amazing. the atmosphere was perfect for a chill, enjoyable, and comfortable dining experience. staff was friendly and helpful! wish we lived in the area, we would be here all the time :))

Yelp
The food was pretty good, but not as good as other anglo-mexican food in Portland. The drinks were also fine. Nothing stood out, except the horrendously long lines they get. Seating was fine, but it gets loud in there.

Yelp
My wife and I drove by this place a few days ago and I loved the name and was swayed by their pictures on Instagram and reviews on Yelp to try it out. Very spacious, outdoor and indoor seating. You place your order first before taking a seat. Lots of options on the menu both for meat eaters and vegetarians/vegans. I appreciated the specials on their board and also a list of mocktails. Quality of the food is spot on. We knew we were in for something good even with just the chips and guacamole, but the tacos themselves were awesome. I had a herbivore mushroom taco and a blackened salmon taco, both of which were amazing Very happy to have passed by this spot which is now our new go-to for Tacos!

Yelp
Tacovore seems to be a neighborhood staple in Beaumont and it's easy to see why. Staff are friendly, indoor and outdoor seating is super cozy, and drinks are great. Their taco ideology could be described as "Maximalist" which I'm not necessarily the biggest fan of (e.g., pineapple, guac, pork, onions, herbs, and other items stuffed into a small corn tortilla), but one upside is the joyful feeling you get as your taco spews various ingredients out the backside as you eat it. It's giving you a second helping whether you like it or not. The chips were also amazing, and were fried (cooked?) to take on a 3D shape with a thin air pocket inside. I've never eaten chips so booshie. There may be a better taco joint in Portland, but there's definitely not a better taco joint in Fremont. Will definitely be back next time I'm in town.

Yelp
White people tacos that were way too salty. I had the cauliflower (the best), carnitas and chicken. I was hungry and needed a quick bite. It did the job but there are far better options out there.

Yelp
We drove by and saw a big line going out of the restaurant and knew we had to stop and try it. We were not disappointed. We started with the Carnivore Special made with beef brisket for $6.50. It was good, with a diverse selection of ingredients and sauces. All of our tacos were very unique; not standard taco truck offerings. Our favorite was the carnitas taco with mango chunks and jalapeno peppers ($4.50). The carne asada taco ($5), which came with guacamole, was good too. We also liked the blackened fish taco ($5) which had a good sized piece of fish. All tacos were made with corn tortillas that tasted freshly home made. We found Tacovore to be a very pleasant dining experience with creatively done tacos that are different than what you normally find at taco places. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The staff was friendly and the food was served quickly. There are so many great places to eat in Portland. We love finding small restaurants like this one serving up creative, high quality food.

Yelp
My new favorite taco spot! How had it taken me so long to eat here?! Thoughtfully sourced ingredients, lots of customization options, amazing flavor combinations, reasonable portions. I have dairy allergies and love that Tacovore has dairy free options that are so tasty. I only wish they would open up a SE location so I could visit more often!

Michael M.

Yelp
It wasn't for me. The Tortillas were tough and chewy, the carne asada wasn't seasoned enough and also smoked for some reason. The carnitas were dry and served with chunks of raw orange. I think they know there clientele, which seems to be older white people.
google avatar

Ritu K.

Yelp
These tacos are wholly inauthentic and you know what that's fine by us. Its convenient and fits a nitch in our neighborhood for a great place to walk to for eats and drinks. We love taking our dogs here for lunch, and although I usually lament that their tacos taste nothing like tacos, nor are they that exceptionally good, they're still perfectly fine to me. As an example, my "Baja" style fish taco had peas, cucumbers and a sauce that seemed more fitting in a gyro than a Baja fish taco. Did I eat the whole thing and not mind it all that much- absolutely. Same for the margaritas. They're perfectly satisfying, but nothing to write home about. We'll keep coming back here and totally recognize and appreciate it for what it is.
google avatar

Joshua W.

Yelp
Is it authentic? Nope. Are the tablecloths white? They are not. How many sommeliers do they have? Zero. Is it delicious? 100% Is the restaurant beautiful? Yes it is. Is it a healthy, fast, friendly joint with surprisingly good and spicy house made salsas that I will be coming back to? Yes, yes it is.

Yelp
Came for a spur of the moment lunch because my daughter works nearby and my mom was visiting, and I'll never say no to tacos! I ordered the chicken taquito plate to share with my toddler, and was disappointed from the start. This is VERY white washed mexican food. Oh well, we dig in. I split a taquito in half for my kidlet, and I start eating another one whole. A few bits in, I feel something hard and sharp in my mouth, I instantly think it must be a small chicken bone, but I pull it out and it's a toothpick, a whole freaking toothpick! My mom starts freaking out about how I could have been really hurt, and all I can think about is I'm glad my kidlet got the other one (but best believe I chopped his up tiny to make sure there was nothing sharp). My mom goes inside to let the staff know, the waitress comes outside and kinda laughs about and says "oh yea, we use toothpicks to hold together the taquitos, they must have forgot to take one out" I mention that my kid could have eaten it, she just continued to chuckle and said "well, we can make you a new one" that's gonna be a hard pass my friend. No apologies, nothing. We had already paid, so we just got up and left.

Cassidy D.

Yelp
Cute place! I love all the plants they have everywhere. The tacos were good. Tofu was a little on the bland side, but it's so hard to get right. Not a whole lot of flavor, but still worth a try!

Yelp
So good. I went with some of my co workers for lunch. We loved the tacos and flavors. The margaritas were tasty, and the service was great. I will be back!!!

Yelp
Oh my! We stumbled across this place after getting my first ever tattoo at Golden Sparrow down the street ( but that is for another review!). They recommended it and we were so happy they did! From the smiling and charming woman who took our order to the helpful food runner to the gifted kitchen staff this place has it all. We had the pescado, chicken and carne asada tacos. Yum! To celebrate, we had the 12 oz margaritas. Best ever. We had chips and salsa too. The salsa was very flavorful but not hot, so the food runner promptly brought us two much bitter sauces to spice it up. Try this little treasure of a restaurant soon!

Rich W.

Yelp
As to service. I like your restaurant and I visit at least 3-4 times a month. I would really like to speak with a manager about problems that I've had with takeout and service recently. I will absolutely continue to come there unless my request is totally ignored. It's nothing world shaking but I definitely want to speak to someone. My name is Rich and my phone number is 503-206-7508. Please do me the courtesy of replying to me. Thanks much. Rich

Yelp
Got dinner here with some coworkers. It's a chill, woody casual bar-like vibe on the inside. I got the carnivore, herbivore, and seafood tacos. They definitely fill those tacos to the brim - they were SO full. They were all pretty good but I will say the roasted yams in the herbivore were a game changer.. These tacos are definitely worth the price and there's so many different and unique types too.
google avatar

Cheryl N.

Yelp
Big portions, tasty tacos, fridge full of sauces, all which I highly recommend. The guac tastes fresh, would love to add more heat to it. The limeade and virgin margs were refreshing. Nice variety of tacos. We got carne asada, chicken, cauliflower, and a special pork taco. All delicious. I was stuffed after. Order at that bar, then sit. Bus your own table. Worth it.

Kristen K.

Yelp
went here randomly yesterday and got food poisoning! the tacos were so overpriced i debated on leaving before even ordering (wish i had). I had the shrimp taco $6 and carne asada $5.50. Both tacos did not have quality ingredients and they were just bad. I couldnt even finish them.

Yelp
If this is the corvallis location (yelp just asked me to review, didn't make it clear if Portland or corvallis) It's an interesting take on tacos, it's creative and good quality without being precious or pretentious about itself. Casual atmosphere conducive to a couple drinks with a group of friends. If it's the portland location, nothing special, staff have a bit of attitude and although it's a somewhat unique neighborhood, that doesn't make it interesting enough to bother with overall.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
Tacos range from $3-5, which on the pricier side for tacos, but they're loaded with toppings (so much so that they come with a fork). I got the cauliflower taco, tofu taco, and herbivore taco, and was surprised to find that the cauliflower was my favorite! Whatever glaze they put on the cauliflower was really delicious. The tofu taco had the best pickled onions, but the two sticks of tofu were a little awkward in the folded tortilla. I'm learning to like mushrooms and the herbivore taco definitely helped, but the mushrooms plus steamed greens on the bottom was too much unusualness for me. (If I am remembering the menu correctly, the only other veg options is a bean and cheese taco.) In the Portland taco scene, I'd say Tacovore is solid! If you're planning a taco crawl - first of all invite me - second of all they're worth a stop.

Yelp
Great tacos and they are large. Will definitely be back - wonderful flavors!!! Grilled Chicken Fish Taco

Andrea B.

Yelp
This is a neighborhood treasure! Great food and service. The guacamole is especially well made.

Chris S.

Yelp
Such great food! And the margaritas were phenomenal. Loved the outside seating. Line was a bit long but totally worth it.

Theresa G.

Yelp
Highly overrated. Ordered taco. Received one--not the customary three--small (I mean tiny) taco with such a hard shell it was difficult biting through it. Very overrated. I think it's only popular because of residential location with walk-ins from the Alameda neighborhood. Next time, will stay home and make my own.

Cyndi B.

Yelp
Great food and drink! We drove a long way to check it out and it didn't disappoint. Will be back...
google avatar

Oli B.

Yelp
love this restaurant! this is the second time i've been here, but i got food poisoning and my stomach hurt for about 5 hours before i threw up. i normally have a very strong stomach so this was a surprise. everyone who worked there was very nice and i will just say hold off on the carne asada taco!

Connor M.

Yelp
Blatantly average, but that's okay. Also, oranges in a carnitas taco is...an interesting choice to say the least
google avatar

Amanda K.

Yelp
Tacos and margaritas were delicious! This place is definitely on the more expensive side. You order at the bar before having a seat and it can fill up quickly. Tacos came out in a reasonable amount of time. They have outdoor seating which os nice for when the weather gets better. There is side street parking.
google avatar

Paige J.

Yelp
So this place is a counter service, walk up and order place - not seated dining. They are also super weird about vax cards at the register, like you need to show it before you order, but you don't need to show it if you don't order. So basically if you went in a group and all sat down, only the person ordering would be hassled by the cashier for an ID and card. Seriously? Like anyone would be carrying around a friend's card, so awkward. Ambiance is super casual, cute decor but very counter service type. You also have to buss your own table, so you don't know that when you pay and tip. I'm really not sure what you are tipping for since I did all the work. Also, they have a payment processor that allows you to enter your email for a receipt, but then FYI you'll be spammed by this place. I thought with the laws you had to opt into being on their email spam list, and requesting a receipt didn't consent you to their spam. In any case, they don't care. I rec you just get the receipt printed even though it's not green. OK so that's the experience - now the food. As someone who is used to good tacos, this place is kind of blah as in, not a ton of flavor. The options sound freaking awesome, but the execution wasn't really there. I didn't really even like the chips/guac - like maybe they needed to add some spices or just more oomph to it. I had a few different types of tacos, and the tinga just lacked flavor overall too. It was 3:5 for me, but if I just rated the experience and not the food I'd say 1:5.
google avatar

Quinn A.

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot, tucked on the corner of Fremont on my bike route. Very appealing exterior, creative artwork and paint, lots of tables outside. Inside is cool, spacious, with a nice bar and ample seating. Everything in the menu sounds great. The execution made me say, is that it? I found the fish taco breading to be too heavy. The smoked tofu actually had a hint of smoke so props for that! Its hard to get flavor in tofu. But I ordered twice to hold the pickled onions and twice I got pickled onions. The pickled carrots on that were great, but that's a very strong flavor and it dominated the weak smoke on the tofu bites. My friend who was with me said no to the dirty parsley (cilantro), and his came with the dirty parsley. That's not good. The cauliflower was soft and very bland. Overall it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. I dunno. If I lived within walking distance I'd definitely stop in for a cadillac margarita and some chips and guacamole. Maybe try the other menu items. But I have to actually fetch these, there is no delivery and its miles away. I know, boo hoo. But we weigh these considerations when we choose where to eat out. Don't we? Without a convenience incentive, I'm just going to have to pass and say thanks, nice to meet you. Oh, one last thing. I thought the price was more than fair, and service was good.

Yelp
Close to the house we tried it for the first time today, take out of course. Taco salad was excellent. I got carne asada. Meat was tender, lime vinaigrette was so good, and the veggies were fresh and crisp! The jicama was perfect in it!!! We also tried asada taco, yummm, shrimp and pescado were good, as well as the cauliflower! The sauces and dips were perfect for each! Chips and salsa were great with a side of guacamole. Side of rice...omg. Loved the rice. Overall flavors weren't tooooo complex but good. Everything was fresh and light! Price was a little high but it was good so I can justify it. Would love to go sit and eat as they looked like they had a nice beer and marg section! Place looks cool. Lots of parking. Will return!

Yelp
We had a great experience at Tacovore. We ordered green pozole on special that day with 3 tacos: carnitas, pescado, and ol e and an aguafresca and a michelada to drink. Either it didn't say or we missed that the pozole was vegetarian because there was no meat in it, but it had such a fantastic texture and flavor that we two carnivores had no problem polishing it off. All of the tacos were delicious. My favorite was the carnitas. The agua fresca was a strawberry pineapple hibiscus and was flavorful and not too sweet nor thick. They have indoor seating w/proof of vax, and they have a covered outdoor patio.
google avatar

Maro S.

Yelp
Too big, too heavy, and too wet to be great tacos. Just too much stuff. They fell apart and were a mess. We tried it once over the summer and likely won't be back.
google avatar

Constantine J.

Yelp
Let's tacobout Tacovore... not many words other than yum, delicious and can I have more really do it justice... Right off of Freemont, there are plenty of options to choose from, but, if this isn't on the top of your list then you are missing out. They are well known for their Tacos and it shows. There are many great flavor options to choose from vegetarian friendly too. So rich with flavor, you can't really get enough. Their salsas are so good and have various heat levels. Drinks are on a whole different level. A taco place wouldn't be good without an amazing margarita. New daily flavors, you can't go wrong with any of the options though. They were respectful and compliant with covid protocol. My only complaint is that it seems a bit on the pricier end, but, still awesome!! Get your taco on!!
google avatar

Yelp
I do love a good taco. Alas, this is not my place to go for a good taco. The place is super cute, it has a hipster (yes, I'm sick of this word too) vibe. You order at the counter and they have all types of tacos and beverages. Beers and margaritas abound. The service is brisk not too friendly but that's not surprising. We got our food fast. You're gonna have to use their salsa/hot sauce bar because the tacos lack flavor and in bottom line, dry. I ordered the carne asada. In my hometown, they have $1.50/2 per taco with succculent steak, onions, cheese and cilantro. These are not them. The steak is dry and it's gonna cost you $4/5? I order also a small margarita and a salty taco al pastor. We had a family of four and the price was over $60 with two of us having only two tacos. Btw, these are small street taco size so two will not be enough. The price is pretty steep which is fine if the value is there but I think it isn't. I would come here for drinks but elsewhere for a real taco. That's too bad because it's so close to my house.

Yelp
Very fun twist to Mexican good. Definitely not traditional, but rather fusion style. Great unique flavor combos that I haven't seen in other taco spots. This spot has become one of my favorites.
google avatar

Shelby Z.

Yelp
Tacovore is awesome! We were meeting up with some family and asked them to pick a nearby local spot. It sits right in the middle of a neighborhood and is charming as heck. They have a really lovely outdoor patio, which we opted for since the weather was nice. A lot of great taco options, keep in mind they are decent-sized, too! I only had one with some chips and salsa and was completely satisfied. Also, make sure to get one of their margaritas!! They're seriously amazing. This is a solid taco spot to check out in Portland!
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Everything on the menu is gluten free! Option for a dairy free crema as well. If you are grain free, you can opt for butter lettuce over corn (non-GMO) tortillas. I ordered the grilled chicken and carnitas. The carnitas were so flavorful--if I could do it over again, I would get two carnitas. Grilled chicken was tender but lacked flavor. My husband got the carne asada and carnivore and loved it. Salsa and guacamole were very fresh.

Jennifer P.

Yelp
So cute and great vegan options! Loved the eggplant and cauliflower tacos! Bonus donations to Oregon Humane Society!

Reviewer 3.

Yelp
The amount of taco filling varies, sometimes verging on not worth the price, but overall the quality is consistent and staff have always been friendly.

Yelp
It is businesses like this that make me miss Portland...... Tacovore is an incredible taco joint in the NE part of the city. They have a very Portland atmosphere and a great menu selection to choose from. I went with the Cauliflower Taco and the Shrimp Taco - enjoying each and every bite. I wish I had not had to fly out that night, I would have stayed and devoured another dozen tacos.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
A nice addition to the neighborhood: friendly staff, great ambiance, kid friendly. The tacos are a midpoint between so-so places like McMenamins and the Taco Peddler and yummy "authentic' hole-in-wall venues and carts. I like 'em here, but didn't love 'em. So I'm sure I'll revisit for social gatherings and a weekend night, but probably not just to satisfy a taco craving. One huge plus is that they offer Limeade, which is a favorite in hot weather. I have a feeling that the local community will love their food and that's great.

Yelp
Okay, so I took this off my "must try" list because I have a hard time paying $5 for a street taco ... having said that my better half wanted to check it out for dinner on a Friday night. We walked over and there was a short line but most of the tables were filled. The ambiance was nice - a little loud but that was a result of people enjoying their meal and company. We placed a to go order as we did not want to wait for a table and we live close by. It seemed like I asked the waitress to let me cook my own meal because she didn't know what to do with our number when we said "let me know how long it will be and I'll walk up to the bar to grab it". She said they didn't "do that" so I had to take a number and the server would "find me". We ended up taking the last open table so we could sit and wait for our to go order to be delivered ... seemed silly. As for the food ... it was good. I still think $4-5 for a single taco is too much but they keep the seats filled so others are willing to pony up the funds. They use fresh ingredients that blend well together. Of all the tacos I tried, shrimp was my favorite - it has a spicy kick to it! I'd visit again ... when the parentals are in town and they are paying!

Yelp
Another place in my hood that I just had to try. First of all, this place is always packed. Maybe because it's shiny and new? But also, who doesn't love tacos? I came at lunch around 12:30 on a Friday and there were plenty of people and a short line. Considering this place is in somewhat of a residential neighborhood that's impressive. The atmosphere is open, clean and bright. There were lost of people at the tables chatting over their lunch. Now the most important part....THE FOOD. I wasn't sure what to order and I still trying to figure it out when suddenly it was my turn! EEK! In a panic I went with 2 of the specials with a side of the seasonal veggies of Kale, Leeks and Mushrooms. The Carnivore which is a Lamb taco and the Seafood taco, which is a fried calamari. I really liked the lamb taco, but I also love lamb. I thought it went really well with the pickled onions, bits of potatoes, and cabbage and yogurt sauce. It better be for $5 a taco! However, I was not as impressed with the Calamari. It seemed rather light (to me) on Calamari and I probably wasn't a particularly fan of the arugula, but it wasn't bad either. Just probably would have preferred 2 lamb tacos. The side of veggies were sauteed and very tasty and a great value for $3! It seems like a cool place to come with friends and hang out since they also have a bar there. Nice addition to the neighborhood for sure.

Yelp
The good: very easy and covid safe online ordering system. Food was ready quickly, service friendly. Not-so-good: The food does not taste very good and isn't very good quality. Fast food style food for restaurant price.
