"Fast-casual sister restaurant to Dona on Piedmont Avenue, Tacubaya has anchored the Fourth Street dining scene with all-day Mexican dining for 20 years, and for the last five in its roomier, pinker space just two doors down from the original. Though the restaurant offers a kid-sized scrambled eggs dish, it’s a great spot to let your little one taste more adventurous flavors. Bright ceviches, sopa de tortilla, and seasonal tamales are superb gateway foods, and the atmosphere is easy for managing the ups and downs of dining out with kids — especially when softened with a margarita or mezcal paloma for the grownups." - Justine Jones, Laura Smith Borrman

"Tacubaya is so beloved by locals that they moved a few doors down to an expanded space in an attempt to accommodate its enlarged fan base. This taqueria in the Berkeley shopping complex is where families flock to grab a bite during errands. In fact, there is a perpetual line of patrons ordering limeade at the counter and claiming seats in the festive dining room (look out for the hanging pink papel picados) or sunny front patio. They are here for chilaquiles and churros at breakfast; then transition into chorizo-and-potato sopes with black bean purée at lunch. Other standbys unveil beef enchiladas doused in a smoky guajillo-tomatillo sauce and covered with melted cheese; followed by tamales de verduras bested with spicy salsa verde and cool crema." - Michelin Inspector

Highly recommend the corn and zucchini taco, I actually thought it was more flavorful than the fish taco. You pay at the front before sitting down. Plenty of seating and the food comes out fast. There’s two bathrooms in the back.

Perfect Spot for Groups and Families! Tacubaya is hands down one of the best places to gather with friends or family. Their red and green chilaquiles are out of this world—perfectly sauced with just the right crunch. The refried black beans are flawless, creamy, and packed with flavor. And their homemade tortillas? Pure perfection—fresh, warm, and a must-have with any meal. The casual, welcoming atmosphere makes it easy to enjoy great food and conversation, whether you’re with a big group or just your family. Everyone always leaves happy and full. Highly recommend for delicious Mexican food and a great time!

Worst Burrito I’ve ever had. Rice was undercooked, lacked flavor, and they used plain pulled chicken instead of grilled chicken! There was no taste at all!!! I couldn’t finish it and ordered from another place. I have no idea why this place was full! Maybe other items on the menu are better tasting? One star for the nice workers.

Google
We tried this place on a Tuesday afternoon. It wasn’t busy at all and we sat outside on the patio. The food arrived relatively quickly and tasted pretty good. I ordered the chicken tacos ($5 each) and my partner ordered the chicken enchiladas with a beer. My tacos were really wet and I couldn’t tell if it was grease or if the chicken was just really juicy. Had good flavor otherwise. Overall, I enjoyed eating here.

Google
Honestly the food, staffing, and atmosphere are really good, it's just way too overpriced for guac and chip. Why is it $14 for shrimp ceviche and chips, and also $14 for guac and chips? The portions are way to small for the price. I would have expected around 8 bucks for this, not $14.

Google
This place is yummy and I often because it's nearby. however, gluten free people need to be VERY careful. The chicken taco consistently gets me sick even though it's marked as gluten free. The steak tacos are yummy!

Dionne Chen

Google
I’m so sorry but these were the worst tacos I’ve ever had in my life. Not only so expensive ($14 for small TWO tacos?…), but idk what seasoning they used, but it was not good. My steak taco was such a weird cut of steak and weirdly seasoned. My Al pastor legitimately tasted like fish. I ate them bc I felt bad for wasting $14, but that was a mistake because I felt extremely queasy on the way home. Genuinely astonishingly unpleasant to eat, please just go to a local taco truck!!

Came in just for quick margs. Bar tender was super nice, friendly, and his service was on point! Margs were great! Can’t wait to come back and try their food.

Yelp
We came here today for a quick lunch while we were looking at furniture stores for a new sofa. This seems to be a new location for this restaurant. It's very big but feels like a giant basement. Service is very fast. The front desk could be a little more friendly. Water is self serve. We tried a crunchy chicken taco which was pretty good. It came with a lot of pickled jalapenos. The battered fish taco was tasty but was not crunchy at all. The al pastor taco had very good flavor too but the texture was weird. This is one of the few restaurants in the area that has their own bathroom which is very convenient. Prices are very good but in order to get a plate with rice or beans, the Astros add up quickly. For sample enchiladas are $14. But beans is 3.75 and rice is 3.75 so that would add up to over $20 for a plate with rice and beans. I think the flavors are interesting at this taqueria. I will definitely come back here again to try other things.

Astrid D.

Yelp
I got the chile relleno and it was amazing! The service is not only quick but everyone is incredibly nice. The ambiance is fresh and the restaurant is nice and open. Visit them for sure!

Richard T.

Yelp
Been coming here for over 20 years since the kids were toddlers. Doesn't disappoint and has the same casual family vibes even though we're now empty nesters. Food remains fresh and high quality. We do miss the fideo pasta dish though. Best kept secret is the public restroom.

Mariam M.

Yelp
The food was alright - I felt the chicken wasn't very flavorful and for some reason the red sauce was a bit sour. A great bang for your buck though I found it to be a very affordable option for food in berkley! This is also a restaurant with plenty of seating - decent decor and one of those in which you typically bus yourself.

Gina G.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try Tacubaya for quite some time now on 4th Street, Berk. What a fun treat! If you haven't visited 4th Street in a while, there are a few new shops/restaurants to check out. Tacubaya has been a staple for a bit of time and upon walking in, you're greeted by vibrant colors, atmosphere, and beautiful indoor dining aesthetics. This is an order-at-register type spot with a wide array of fresh Mexican dishes and flavor options. Our party ordered fish tacos, guac & chips, ensalada de primavera, and chicken enchiladas. To note, the plates are mostly served a la carte, so def. something to keep in mind if you're with a large group and want to explore your tastebuds! Besides lunch, they also serve brunch options, happy hour, dinner, dessert, and a beautiful beer/wine/cocktail menu. The food was delicious, enchiladas were clean and tastefully done. Huge fan of table guac and this didn't disappoint. Looking forward to coming back and trying more from the menu and with the weather starting to improve, sit outside. Plenty of street parking and a lot outside of restaurant (does get busy, so plan ahead!)

Ada M.

Yelp
Good place. The fish tacos had a bit too much breading and too soft instead of crispy but they were still good tacos. I love the color scheme and interior of the place. Very aesthetic and brightly colored.

Alexa A.

Yelp
Pretty solid food in the 4th Street area! Rarely a wait. Nice indoor and outdoor seating options. I like their chilaquiles. Though it's always a toss up if you're gonna get green or red sauce ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Still great! Margaritas are yummy as well :)

Miranda D.

Yelp
I come here all the time after shopping at the plant nursery. Their sopa de tortilla and papas con crema are to die for! You order and pay at the register, and the food arrives at your table. Service is consistently fast, and the food never disappoints. Their agua frescas are a little too sweet for me, and alcoholic beverages are strong and yummy! This establishment is right in front of a one-way parking lot that gets filled up real quick on busy days, however there is a paid parking lot a couple blocks away!

Lea M.

Yelp
Man Tacubaya, my opinion of you has drastically changed since my first few visits from years ago. I have to say, I absolutely love your new location and interior. The colors and dining area is more inviting and large. Another plus is the second floor seating as well as the porch seating for those that was to admire a lovely day outside. At times the service can be hit or miss but I contribute that to the lunch rush and how chaotic it can be. However, I've experienced good service more so than the latter. Especially if you sit at the bar and because of this, I really enjoy their Paloma. Also, My favorite meal is their Children's quesadilla with steak bites. It's a great size to share and I absolutely love the cheese that they use. The tacos are also very delicious and I appreciate their in house tortillas.

Haley T.

Yelp
My family and I have been coming here for YEARS, ever since were at their former spot across the plaza. Tacubaya is one of the better places to eat when visiting 4th St. Things I'd recommend: * Fideo * Papas Con Crema * Taco Al Pastor * Taco De Pescado * Churros There's a lot of seating and a full bar. Half service format. Fun for happy hour! That being said, the price tag is high for Mexican food. If you're in the area, I'd recommend dining here.

Susan T.

Yelp
I forgot how delicious the chicken tortilla soup is here! If you haven't been in awhile go and enjoy.

Mcrag M.

Yelp
Clean big space, nice music, very friendly & gracious staff, great food it's their 20 year anniversary. Coming back for sure.

Amy S.

Yelp
I ordered two carne asada tacos with chips and salsa. The chips and salsa came with three types of salsa a pico type with cucumber a salsa verde and a warm chipotle type salsa. The tacos were great. The meat was good quality the to go box was perfect for tacos. Service was friendly. Someone came in and asked if they could use the bathroom and that was approved. Ambiance was a bit boring but it was Saturday at noon. A lot of families. I will go back for happy hour. The drink menu looked appealing and I bet it would be more lively. Decor is colorful and bright.

Ashley W.

Yelp
Simply not good tacos. Maybe other food is better here like the margaritas but the tacos were not good. The shell was bad. The chicken one was so dry and odd. The fish one was better. The service was confusing, they waited literally said "here's this and that" when delivering our drinks and we had to guess which one was which. The wrong food was given to the wrong person. The inside is cute though and it's a good family vibe or casual friends bite.

T A.

Yelp
Am almost positive I had an al pastor taco here a while ago, but if I had seen pineapple tidbits IN my pastor, I never would have gone back! Automatic fail when I see pineapple in my al pastor. I ordered the chillaquilles and my friend had a breakfast sandwich that advertised nopales that were really poblanos. When I leave more than half the chillaquilles on my plate and my friend has to scrape off every inch of poblano because she's allergic to chiles, that's no bueno for me. All the food lacks spice. It's probably due to its location. Their chips are pretty amazing though.

Peter T.

Yelp
This place is a super quaint and nice restaurant in Berkeley. I got the chicken enchiladas and they were excellent. I would definitely go back and try other food items

Maria B.

Yelp
I think I eat here more than anywhere else! They have an always perfectly balanced authentic margarita and another one with pilonsillo called doña that is so tasty. I've had their entire menu and my favorites are the torta vegetariana and add carne asada, it has rajas, so good!!!! Their carne asada quality is five stars so you can't go wrong with any dish that has it. Also the tamal vegetariano is so good. I'm not vegetarian but it's honestly incredible. They also have café de olla, which is the best coffee on 4th Street and a little known secret, I order it over ice. They also have really great service and staff is always attentive and on point. I don't know who chose the colors of the space, but they are a color genius because it's beautiful inside!

William K.

Yelp
It's all been said before. Some of the tastiest mexican food in the East Bay! Their unusual and healthier choices in their dishes challenge you to consider going slightly outside the usual. The CHILE RELLENO is addictingly good! Guac and chips super fresh and perfect. I love every dish I ever had here. You will too!

Bebe J.

Yelp
I'm working on a jobsite down the street. Came in here for a couple tacos. I walk in, they see me and just start chatting with each other. Then I go sit at the bar instead of stand at the register, they still see me. They look at me with a smug confused look on their face ... Can I order I ask. The gave me the most unwelcoming presence that I just bounced. If their food is good, I won't know cause I refuse to go in there with service like that. I will be letting my crew know too. 2 chicks behind the bar. Shame on u.

Chris C.

Yelp
I've been going to Tacubaya for brunch on the weekends for years. It never disappoints. Fluffy scrambled eggs with chorizo, chilaquiles, delicious sopes, these are my favorites, but everything they make is fresh, authentic, and incredibly delicious. They create deep, intense flavors that don't feel heavy or overpowering. Even after a big brunch, I don't feel weighted down or sluggish. Just really happy. And if you stayed out a little late the night (or nights) before, it's the perfect hangover cure. Brunch on weekends can get busy, but don't worry. Lines go fast, and before you know it, you're looking at a big plate of chilaquiles that will satisfy, guaranteed. The service is excellent. Everyone is super helpful and friendly. If you aren't familiar with a menu item or ingredient, just ask. Everyone is genuinely nice and the food just can't be beat.

Daniela J.

Yelp
Great spot on 4th street for casual sit down or take out Mexican. You order at the counter and then they bring your food. I loved my Al pastor taco and also the sope con chorizo and papas. My 2 year old loved the beans and rice.

Traechel M.

Yelp
In search and need of margaritas, my husband and I went to Tacubaya looking for good tacos and tequila to celebrate our anniversary! Happy to say we got really lucky with this restaurant. The restaurant has a Miami vibe with pink and orange walls and wicker bar stools. There is even sitting upstairs. It is like a cafe style restaurant, so you place your order at the register. After careful consideration, we ordered the Pollo and Asada tacos with a side of pinto beans and arroz. Of course, margaritas were out drink of choice! The margaritas were great, so we ordered a second margarita, this time with spicy salt rim! For dessert we ordered the Mexican chocolate cake. It wasn't our taste, so we followed up with the servers for the churros. Even with only two people working the front of the restaurant, nothing took too long coming out! Now... the churros we very sugary and delicious and warm! We will definitely be back as regulars. The service, quality of food, and margaritas are worth the visit.

Kyle M.

Yelp
I only popped in here to grab some tacos while co-working outside in the area with a friend, so I can't comment on their full menu of Mexican food. I just ordered 2 hardshell crispy chicken tacos to go and they were solid. The interior space is quite roomy, something hard to tell from the street. They have a small outdoor patio, main interior and an upstairs dining area. It's close to the main free parking lot on 4th street, so easy to roll in and find a spot. Service was friendly, however it did take about about 10 minutes to only get two tacos with only a 2 people ahead of me ordering. Prices are on par with what you'd expect for the 4th street area, certainly not a cheap taco truck rate.

Jasmine C.

Yelp
First time at 4th Street in Berkeley on Saturday 10:30am and it surprisingly wasn't busy. They have tables outside, inside with open door, and upstairs so very spacious. Lots of options for food and drink. The breakfast nacho thing was super yummy! Everything was solid, however, nothing that knocked my socks off. Would I come back? Maybe if I was in the mood when around the area but nothing specific that jumped out at me. Still a lovely place to meet up for some grub.

Angie H.

Yelp
Torta Al Pastor, how I love thee. Your buns are the perfect blend of supple and fluffy. Your filling spills out and I often need a fork to ensure I savor every little bit. Seasoned wonderfully, stuffed with avocado and slaw, my mouth is watering thinking about it tbh. We had some extra time before picking kiddo up from preschool so we did a sit down situation instead of our usual takeout. It was right around noon so the place was empty! By the time we left, it was much busier with hungry lunch patrons. Spouse got the sope with chorizo and potatoes and he said it was good! The tortilla chips weren't the best but I ENJOYED THE SALSA VERY MUCH. It's self-serve water which we have no problem with at all. You also should bus when you're done. There's convenient stations in the front and back and I like the upstairs seating option. It's a vibe! We aren't big drinkers and mostly just go here when it's convenient so I haven't tried any of the adult beverages but I WANT TO!

Kim P.

Yelp
This was the first time I've gone to a place where what I ordered so was different from what I received. I ordered an al pastor torta and what I received was not at all al pastor- in the cut of pork or in the seasoning/flavoring. What I received was essentially a dry ass carnitas torta. The meat was dry and almost stringy. It's a minor complaint, but the torta also wasn't fully cut in half where I had to rip it fully apart myself. If this was actually a good al pastor torta, this wouldn't have bothered me. I'll give it to them the portion for the torta was pretty good for the price.

Sabeena B.

Yelp
I didn't know that 4th street had this cute spot! The inside is very colorful and inviting and the staff was very kind. I got the vegetarian torta and it was a really decent size. I enjoyed the filling a lot and it was a very satiating meal for a vegetarian. The only thing I'd suggest is adding just a little more salt. Make sure you also pair it with some kind of hot sauce. For my drink, I got the strawberry mint agua fresca and it was super refreshing! Not too sweet and had really good flavor.

Jonathan R.

Yelp
Wonderful location on 4th street in Berkeley so worth a stop if shopping and strolling bring you to the neighborhood. Menu is varied with lots of options and specials. My go to is the Mexican soup and their homemade chips are great . My one complaint remains the service isn't great ( staff not overly friendly or welcoming), and the tables , seats and benches are not cleaned up timely. Enjoy!

Robert O.

Yelp
The food is good but NEVER, and I mean NEVER...reach to get your own fork and knife if you forget to ask for it at the counter. The Food Nazi lady behind the counter will bite your HEAD OFF. How dare you. Mouth Breather.

Ruthiya R.

Yelp
There isn't much flavor on the food. We ordered many tacos and soup was super disappointing. The only thing that made the food taste better was el yucateco sauce. I am sorry but don't recommend the salsa and tacos.

Arjun R.

Yelp
Went with a large party. They were able to seat us upstairs - and we had great service and food. Would definitely go again

A L.

Yelp
Rude Staff. Had dinner there on Friday Dec 8 and the man and woman who were working front of the house (taking orders at the cash register) were incredibly rude. Treated me and my family like we were an annoyance, used an irritated and condescending tone to answer my question about the menu, and had the worst look on their face when speaking to me. I know it's hard to come by workers these days, so that's the only way I can imagine their behavior is tolerated. The restaurant was not that busy, and there was nobody in line behind us, so it's not like we were holding up the line. I've worked in the restaurant industry for years, so I know when it's a customer issue or when it's a service issue, and this man and woman were just straight rude. Food was fine, food runners were nice. An otherwise uneventful meal.

Ben L.

Yelp
hands down one of my favorite mexican places. The beef lengua tacos and the seasonal agua frescas are delicious!

Mel S.

Yelp
*Open for indoor dining, outdoor dining, and takeout* Came here on a Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm (just after the breakfast menu shuts down) for a late lunch. Service and staff: - This restaurant is more of a formal fast food. You enter the restaurant, order at the register, then sit down with a number - The staff member who took our order at the register was super nice, double-checked for us if the breakfast service was done for the day, and answered a couple questions I had kindly - The food came out to us fairly quickly (I wouldn't have wanted it quicker considering what we ordered) Food: - Quesadilla: comes with three small quesadillas that look almost like mini empanadas. The chicken is soft and there's plenty of that and cheese - Tacos: ordered a carne asada taco and a pescado taco. The carne asada was juicy and came with a nice sauce. The pescado taco was decent - it lacked flavor if you took any bites that didn't contain the Chile aioli, which was a little disappointing - Chips and salsa: ordered a salsa trio with chips. One of the salsas was very spicy, the other a loco de gallo, and the third a verde - Horchata: tasty - overwhelmed by the amount of cinnamon that stuck to the bottom, but it was good until that point! - Bloody Maria: their take on a Bloody Mary. Tasty with a blend of spicy and sour Miscellaneous: - There is street parking nearby and a few lots surrounding the area - Outdoor seating is limited, but there's plenty of indoor seating - Single bathrooms are not limited to gender (unisex)

Sandra R.

Yelp
Fake ass Mexican spot! This is clearly a white rich people (who don't know Mexican food) spot! Over priced and terrible food, not worth it! I asked for a sope and asked if it came with some basic salsa and the cashier said no! It's all "a la carte" one taco and a margarita cost $20.95! Go to the fruitvale for the real deal this place is a joke

John C.

Yelp
Just had the seasonal chili relleno which was battered and fried poblano Chile, stuffed with Hen Wood & king trumpet mushrooms, queso mixto & goat cheese, garlic, onion & epazote. Topped with tomato salsa, cream & cilantro. Served with 3 corn tortillas. Really good. I didn't even miss not having meat, saying much from this old carnivore.

Kyra K.

Yelp
Every time we come here the service is so rude. They always seem perturbed and give off DMV level enthusiasm to be interacting with you. The food is good, but today's experience was the last straw for us. We missed the sign about eating outside and the staff decided to take the opportunity to let us know very loudly (as if to publicly shame us). It was hostile and off putting. Did we make a mistake and miss the sign? Sure. Is this reason enough to treat us, aka people AND customers, so poorly? No, there's no excuse for that. There's plenty of other amazing food in the area that does not belittle customers and make them feel so unwelcome.

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
This place is excellent Mexican food and drinks! I truly don't understand some of the recent negative reviews -- the food was all fresh, lovely looking, and incredibly flavorful and tasty, the service was quick and the staff was friendly, and the prices were pretty much on par with other great Mexican restaurants in Berkeley/Oakland! The michelada was tasty and smoky (which is kinda unique) and the hibiscus margarita was the most hibiscus-forward cocktail I've ever had (usually it's a very subtle flavor), and that's a compliment! The chips, guacamole, and green salsa were tasty (the red salsa was only meh), and yes, the guac/salsa/chips side was a bit pricey, but not outrageous. The enchiladas and chile relleno were both fresh and flavorful and tasty and quite large portions. However, the crowning achievement was the torta al pastor -- that was the best pastor I've had outside of Texas, with tasty grilled meat *AND* the pineapple chunks, as it should be!! The bolillo was fluffy with a bit of crisp on the outside and all the toppings were excellent (including a very nice aioli).

Ee Vonn Y.

Yelp
Order at the front and seat yourself with a number. The menu is overwhelming because it looks so large and goes p to the ceiling, but the font is large, and there are plenty of fun options to try. Tacubaya feels more experimental Tex Mex which is exactly what I'm looking for when I'm in the nicest part of Berkeley. Tacos Al Pastor Tacos - Fresh, salty, and flavorful. Churros - Sugary delight! Tamal de Verduras - Must order! The best item we had. Savory, saucy, and warm. Tacos - Can't remember which meat they were, but both were on the dry side. Understandably on the more expensive side compared to SJ.

Britt L.

Yelp
Love it here! We've been coming here for years and it's been perfect for a quick bite, Friday night dinner, Sunday brunch, literally whenever. Delicious strong margs, and traditional flavors.

Sherry S.

Yelp
I found Tacubaya on the Michelin guide so I had to check them out. The tacos encased in their house-made tortillas were ok but I thought the standouts were the other menu items. The sopa de tortilla in a chile-infused chicken broth was incredibly flavorful and the beef enchiladas were perfectly cooked in a smoky guajillo-tomatillo sauce and melted cheese. The interior is very pretty and aesthetic and they have outdoor seating too, where we sat with our dog. You order at the counter and can sit anywhere.

Lizette C.

Yelp
We came across this place on Yelp. The reviews didn't seem convincing but we still went. I ordered the Torta Al Pastor, chips and salsa, and the hibiscus margarita. Torta is 10/10, honestly good torta, different of what I have ever tasted in Mexico but really good. The margarita also 10/10, great tasting not too strong not too weak. And the salsas with the chips were very good, although would like it to be more spicy for me. Order taking was good, she took our order quick and polite.

Grazie E.

Yelp
Dont let pictures nor the hype fool you... I was let down from their ceviche which was supposed to include cooked shrimp... I've been here over 3 years ago and the experience was ok. But now, I never noticed their carne asada tacos are cooked medium rare... Almost $5 for a taco. The red sauce that goes on the taco has no flavor and looks like green salsa tastes better on top of the tacos to be honest. When we ordered the ceviche it came without shrimp. How does that happen? When I asked what happened they provided extra shrimp mixed in there but it didnt taste good at all. Price for this is between $12.50 or something. We only dipped a few chips in the sauce after tasting a shrimp.. Honestly it tasted like chlorine... Next time please offer another option and check-in with the customer to see if it satisfied us because this did NOT. Had we received an offer to order something else then I'd reconsider on leaving this disappointed honest review. To Customers: DO NOT ORDER CEVICHE HERE! Real delicious ceviche should NOT taste like this. So yes, we left the plate. Wishing we ordered the fried plantains... I regretted coming here after forgetting about my first experience years ago.. Would I come back? Heck no.

Yelp
My favorite spot for fish tacos. Fast service, friendly staff, love the setting, it really reminds you of a trendy eatery in Mexico, food is excellent, and the pink decor is kind of iconic of Tacubaya, for anyone who knows this spot. I'm a simple eater and am loyal to my dish of choice, but have had the flourless chocolate cake and churros as well, both good. We go here every other week or so to get our fix. I really want to try their Prickly Pear Mezcal. Highly recommend, but do suggest you plan ahead as it can get very packed with both indoor and outdoor seating. If that's the case ordering to-go is an option, as well. Restaurant is equipped with two restrooms, they provide free water and have bar seating, seating upstairs in the balcony, or seating on the ground floor or in the smaller scaled outdoor uncovered patio. Can't tell you enough, try the fish tacos. SO GOOD!

Yelp
Tasty and innovative Mexican food. Fun ambience. Excellent margaritas. Great for lunch outdoors.

Yelp
I'm surprised it's taken me so long to try this rather stylish taqueria on 4th Street. It's probably because it's in that mini-shopping center next to Market Hall that attracts the glut of shoppers that come to this area. I guess I dismissed it out of hand figuring it would be mediocre. OK, I was wrong, and I only recently discovered my folly after a long walk around the marina. It was the late afternoon and pretty empty so why not. On my first visit, I tried two of the $4.50 Lengua Tacos because tongue is my thing. Don't ask. They did a fine job with plenty of beef tongue, tomatillo salsa, chopped white onions, and cilantro piled into a double layer of small corn tortillas (photo: https://bit.ly/3JETSYC). Tasty, very tasty. I came back with Jamie W. a few weeks later because he had a hankering for Mexican after a walk around Berkeley Aquatic Park. Ah, now I knew Tacubaya was a convenient choice, so we came back. I went with the delicious Lengua Tacos again and added the filling $4.50 Vegetariano for good measure (photo: https://bit.ly/3IH6cGE). It was filled with pinto beans, cheese, rajas, and avocado salsa. We shared the $3.25 basket of Salsa y Totopos, tortilla chips accompanied by a fresh salsa as well as a smoked one, both pretty satisfying as if we actually had to be cajoled into eating chips (photo: https://bit.ly/389fui9). For himself, Jamie tried the $12 Torta Al Pastor, a generous sandwich stuffed with spit roast pork, pinto beans, grilled onions, avocado, aioli, and shredded cabbage. With all that, the scene stealer was the toasted bolillo, which was a very soft mini-baguette that absorbed all the goodness (photo: https://bit.ly/3ICCvq4). Now in its pink and orange splendor, I'll just have to put Tacubaya on my regular rotation. FOOD - 4 stars...the lengua tacos were terrific, and the bolillo even more in the torta AMBIANCE - 4 stars...stylish spot in bold colors befitting its namesake, the funky barrio in Mexico City SERVICE - 4 stars...very quick here TOTAL - 4 stars...a worthwhile taqueria with bargain prices on 4th Street RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? Yelp
I am shocked by the low rating of this place. It was my first time there. I had the tamal de verduras and it was so flavorful and delicious. My friend got the chile relleno and it was excellent. The food is fresh and made with care. Servings are also generous. I will definitely return. FYI, they have lots of menu options and a large drink menu, alcoholic and not. Market Hall on 4th has closed, and my hopes of finding a $15 lunch were dashed-until we walked in here. Decor is fun and inviting. Good for families, dates, and friends.

Yelp
First time exploring the area and everything about forth street is CUTE! Tacubaya is a casual Mexican dining spot - they check your vaccine card upon arriving, you order with a cashier, take a number and have the option to sit inside, outside or on the more public patio. Indoor siting was quite large, their patio is rather small and seats are pretty close together imo. Personally, I get a little stressed out when ordering without waiter service because I feel like I don't have enough time to think. lol So I made the quick decision to order the ceviche. When it came out, I was stocked! I was expecting your typical fresh looking, cucumber, limey ceviche but no this had some sort of vinaigrette tomato sauce and this goes back to me stressfully ordering and not entirely reading the menu lol Although, I enjoyed it, I was taken back by it not being traditional to what I was used to. Chips & guac (can you even go wrong?) were a very small portion for $11 but bay area problems. The true highlight of the meal was the el matador cocktail!!!! Chili infused tequila? Sign me right up. It was spicy, refreshing and perfectly rimmed with chili salt. I have dreams about this perfect cocktail.

Yelp
Always good. Usually have their fish tacos along with tamales with mole sauce. Also had Mexican Hot Chocolate.

Yelp
The food came out really fast. Great place to bring kids. Very casual and laidback. The food was very good and the service was easy. You order at the counter and the food was brought out to us within 5 minutes.
