So big! So fresh! So good! 😊 my favorite bakery in Manhattan and Flushing Chinatowns. The cakes or gorgeous and I have no doubt they taste as good as they look. I go for the buns - char sui bao- the roast pork buns filled with sweet and tender BBQ roast pork - more pork filling any other bakery I’ve been to and in a much larger bun ! The buns are soft, sweet, and flavorful. Yes the prices here are more than many other bakeries but they are worth it. The buns and larger, there are more fillings and the flavors are superb. The red bean pastries are incredible - looking like a puffy cinnamon danish but those lines aren’t cinnamon, they’re red bean paste. The hot dog buns are totally enrobed in the fluffy, sweet pastry. This is Chinese Pastry Heaven! The staff is super helpful and attentive on the floor and behind the glass cases, making it easy for you to make your selections and helping the line move smoothly.

My happy place. Cash only and always busy but the line moves fast. I usually prefer the things from the refrigerated side but the buns are good too. Desserts are perfectly balanced and not too sweet. Egg tarts are a must. Prices are super fair. The women here work hard and have to deal with a lot of people so be patient and kind, a smile goes a long way (and don’t forget to tip, I notice many people don’t but a $1 or $2 is always very appreciated by the staff)

Came in on a weekday mid morning and the bakery wasn’t busy at all! It was nice to take my time to check out all of the buns. I got the egg tart and a coconut cream bun. Coconut cream bun was thick and chewy- love it! The cream is reminiscent of a buttercream, not very sweet but gives the bread more flavor. And of course it’s coated in coconut flakes, so be careful of the mess it’ll make! The egg tart’s custard was the best part, smooth and a lil bouncy. The shell of the tart however, wasn’t flaky, a lil dense. I probably wouldn’t get it again.

There are many bakeries in New York's Chinatown, offering better flavors and favorable prices than this one, but the service here is terrible. The Cantonese-speaking seem to have an unwarranted sense of superiority when dealing with fellow Chinese. Would never go there again

Authentic Asian Pastries at Great Prices. For years, I've been enjoying the delicious treats at TaiPan Bakery. This unassuming shop specializes in single-serving Asian pastries like small tarts, buns with fillings like red bean or roast pork, and other tasty baked goods. My favorites are the sweet, sticky buns, paired perfectly with a soothing honey lemon tea. The pastries have light, puffy textures with a delightful creaminess. Unlike super-sweet Western desserts, these aren't overly sugary or coated in icing. What keeps me coming back is the incredible freshness and amazingly low prices at TaiPan. The quality is outstanding for the value. Just note they are cash only.

Ordering food here is very hectic, it is not very organized and there is limited seating. That being said, there is a wide variety of desserts and all of the ones we tried were very good. We were lucky to get fresh egg tarts and it was very nice. Things are very fairly priced.

Had to hit up this spot on Lunar New Year Parade Eve. Shorty ran in for chicken pie, sweet butter bread, small custard pie, milk and butterfly bun.. mini butterloaf muffins. Cash only.. they were patient w shorty.. our first time.

While wandering through the city, I happened to stumble upon Tai Pan Bakery, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of my day. As soon as I stepped inside, the enticing aroma of freshly baked goods filled the air, and I knew I had discovered a hidden gem. Among the wide array of tempting pastries and cakes on display, the mango cake immediately caught my attention. I decided to give it a try, and I'm so glad I did--it was nothing short of delightful. I'm already planning my next visit to explore more of their menu--there's no doubt that Tai Pan Bakery has become a must-stop destination for me whenever I'm in the area.

My family and I have been coming to this bakery for years! We would always stop by to stock up on pastries for the next day or two days (either for breakfast or for my dad to take to work for his coffee breaks). I'm really saddened by how the quality has deteriorated over the years. My mother picked up some goods yesterday and as always, we throw any extra roll or sponge cakes into the fridge. Went to eat one the next day and found that it already started growing mold. This is after one night in the fridge, still in its package with other baked goods in a storage container. We had to inspect the other items and looks like this was the only one affected.

Come ready to place order. No time to waste here. Pick through and order drinks at the counter. Quick turn over. A couple of small tables inside. When we went, we stood inside, people tent to linger at the tables. My husband enjoyed his 2 croissants and I had a. Iced coffee, a little bitter and a pork milanés sandwich, simple but absolutely delicious. CASH ONLY

Still good bakery goods; grab a tray (which is inconveniently in the middle of the pastries instead of at the start of a line), and once you have it, follow through the plexiglass area where you can slide your tray into line. Want something from the glass displays and nothing outside? Put an empty tray down so they know you have a spot. Egg tarts still good, and the pork sung bread (one version with less mayo) is good.

I visited Tai Pan Bakery in Chinatown, NYC, and had a mixed experience. They offer a variety of options, and I enjoyed the mango rice cake, which was delicious and affordable. However, we also bought a savory bun that appeared to be vegetarian but later discovered it contained meat. It was disappointing and wasteful. The bakery would benefit from labeling all their items clearly. Overall, while there are good options, better labeling would improve the experience.

Been going to this bakery since I was a little girl. This will always be one of my favorites. Every birthday, my dad lets me choose a cake from any bakery that I want. I always pick either their Fresh Fruit or Mango cake. Their cake never ceases to amaze me. They are always full of flavor and taste extremely fresh, even when mangoes are not in season. Don't get me started on their custard tarts! They have been a favorite of mine since I was little. I could never find a place that makes better custard tarts. No matter how much they raise the price on them, I think I will always be a customer. The staff there are also all extremely nice and helpful. The only downside to this bakery is that they still don't accept cards and Apple Pay. I am not a person who likes to carry cash, so it is definitely a hassle for me.

One of my favorite dessert places in ChinaTown , esp at affordable prices even during this economy. The lengthy bakery is filled with delicious pastries, drinks and savories. My pick: MANGO LAVA CAKE !! If you're a fan of mango, then you must try these. I got myself one and just loved the richness of the cake. Loved it. Also , the mango mochi!

I've been coming here ever since I can even remember because I grew up in Chinatown and my mom always loved bringing me here. Now that I'm in Brooklyn it's a long commute but since I'm working in City Hall, I can always pass by this bakery during lunch or after work. Such great convenience and lots of pastries to choose from. My favorite is the egg tarts! They have many types of egg tarts! While egg tart, white egg tart, matcha egg tart, and Portuguese egg tart! They also have a box of mini egg tarts to buy but lately when I go there, they either run out or stop making them. It's always very crowded no matter what time of the day I go in to get my egg tarts. Lots of tourists too which means this place is very hyped for their nice and to go pastries at an affordable price. With around $2 you can get yourself a nice pastry like the pineapple bread in case you're hungry and need a fast snack which is what I've been doing lately. So hungry and I need to run into Taipan to get a fast light snack. The good thing about their pastries is that they are not laden with sugar and cream to the point that you're just eating pure sugar. They are very careful about the sweetness level so you definitely know it is Chinese pastry you're tasting! Most American bakeries are very sugary so anyone who wants to try out Chinese pastries without too much sugar should come here. It's in the heart of Chinatown! Their cakes are very cute too! So many styles to choose from and they give you a book of themes and flavors to choose from. You can either go with canned fruit or fresh fruit inside your cake or chestnut stuffing. There are various sizes of cakes by the circumference. You just need to order in advance. Overall the ambience is a lot of people talking and going in and out. Interior is very stainless steel with stainless steel floors, tables and bench. Not much seating anymore as they used to have more on the 2nd level where they used to sell rice boxes of spare ribs and sausages. Now they don't have any more of that which sucks.

Tai pan is a must for anyone looking for authentic Chinese baked goods. The pineapple pork bun here is what dreams are made of. For less than $3 you get a massive bun that has the perfect sweet crust on the outside with the rich savoriness of the roasted pork inside. It's so good. I was also a huge fan of the Portuguese egg tart which has more of the burned on crisp than the regular egg tart. Flakey buttery crust and delightfully fluffy egg makes for a wonderful treat. Inside is going to be tight and crowded. Seating is limited to two small tables and a standing counter.

Amazing Chinese bakery in Chinatown, on Canal St. Everything from custom cakes to numerous baked goods both savory (curry puffs) to sweet (Mochi filled with sweet bean, sweet white bean, sesame mochi), pastries, cookies, mooncakes and egg tarts/milk tarts/Portuguese custard egg tarts (the best). They gave grab and go sandwiches and subs and other lunch specials. Lines are always out the door, but get a number you'll be good!

This place has cute cake designs. It's definitely better than wegmans or Paris Baguette. The second photo shows taro in the middle and bottoms has a hard texture like cereal with sugar on it so it adds more sugar if you need it while eating the taro. One of the best birthday cakes I have eaten. They have nice pastries also inside shop, a small section at the side to sit down. 2nd photo- mango mochi was pretty good. The outter shell has a coconut flake texture/marshmallow texture when bitten then inside the middle has a mango paste flavor to make sit a mango mochi. Sweet not too crazy sweet. The strawberry milkshake was good, felt homemade with a lot of strawberry flavor when drinking, it is made with strawberry, milk and just sugar. It's like expensive so there is not extra special ingredients.

So be prepared to pay in cash, this place does not take cards. They were out of the coconut bread, which was one of the items I was hoping to have. It was neat and clean and organized well. You place your items on the tray and pass through the window when you want items from the dessert case. I have to say that the chocolate mousse cake was by far our favorite and I wished we had gotten more than one :) Also, the mango mochi dessert was phenomenal. All the deserts had just the right amount of sweetness to them. I highly recommend this bakery.

Stopped by this Chinese bakery in Chinatown that reminded me of my childhood. It can be overwhelming as the line is long and the shop can get crowded at times. However, the line moves fairly quickly. You can find all of your favorite Chinese pastries here like egg tarts, pineapple buns and bbq pork buns. I'd recommend coming early in the morning so you can grab the best ones. Don't forget to bring enough cash since they don't take card here!

This bakery came highly recommended by a friend. We stopped by on a rainy day, so we got lucky and there wasn't a huge rush. They have a large selection of breads, cakes, and egg tarts, but I went for the Portuguese egg tart, which I'm already craving to have again. It had a flaky buttery crust with a sweet creamy custard-like filling.... so good! There's a small amount of seating inside too, though I imagine it'd feel crowded when the bakery is more packed. Make sure to bring cash! My friends and I didn't know this was cash only beforehand, but I luckily had just enough cash on me.

Taipan is my trusted and favorite bakery. Gotta support my Taiwanese bakery LOL. Came here with my friends to grab some mooncakes for the Mid-Autumn Festival. Wanted to share regular traditional mooncakes. I love lotus mooncake (No Egg Yolks!!!!). I got 2 large Lotus mooncake (no egg yolk) + 3 pieces small custard lava mooncake for us to share. We ordered at the front counter for mooncakes (mooncake in the display case and on the counters). Posters of the mooncake fillings are outside the bakery and on the inside windows. There are menus posted at the counter and the TV screen showcases some unique ones. We sat in to try the custard lava mooncake (not warmer) and while the crust is doughy (typical) the custard filling was yummy. We advise my friend to try warming up half of the mooncake when she get home, as she only had a few bites. Highly recommend the purple yam custard mooncake. Was not expecting the egg yolk in the middle but enjoyed it alot. The lotus mooncake is typical and delicious. It was red lotus and I was expecting white lotus, but still delicious. Thanks Taipan!

They open late and still has some stuff around 6-7pm. Unfortunately no public bathroom, not even for pregnant ladies. Have a huge variety and some bar stools inside for eating in.

Very busy bakery but the line moves fast. Items are freshly made throughout the day. Cute desserts and pork buns had a good amount of meat. Looking forward to returning.

I've been coming here since childhood. It is very fast paced, and you need to be assertive or people will cut you in line. The hustle of the bakery can be a bit intense, but it's worth it. The buns and cakes are cute, cheap, and delicious. Immerse yourself in the culture. Seating is extremely limited, so bring yourself to nearby Columbus Park Pavilion, grab a seat, and enjoy life for a few minutes.

I stopped by this bakery this afternoon to pick up some Portuguese egg tarts and some other baked goods. There were a lot of people already in line so you know it's popular. I picked up a tray and tongs to place whatever buns I liked. I ended up getting the red bean bun. I love all buns with red bean in them. Then I placed my tray on the counter so one of the staff can put the tarts on it and I can pay for my items. Each Portuguese egg tart costs $2.50 and the red bean bun costed about the same as well. I enjoyed the egg tarts and the bun very much. I'm looking forward to going to this bakery again to see what other goodies I can buy. Maybe I'll try a savory bun next time. There are a couple of tables in the bakery if one wants to sit and enjoy the baked goods. They only accept cash so make sure you have enough. The only suggestion I would make is that I hope they can make some of the name tags of the baked goods more clear. And I hope one day they will accept credit cards for payment.

Used to be one fantastic place. Now it looks dirty and dilapidated. Food wasn't good either and the cake stale.

This review is specifically for Tai Pan's cakes. I recently ordered a large chestnut cake for my child's birthday, and tried their mango cake at another child's birthday party. At $38 each, the price is fair since the cakes are good quality with plenty of fruit on top and filling in the middle. The sponge was light and fluffy and the frosting so airy and light, typical of Chinese bakery cakes. I love that these cakes are also not too sweet. However, one thing to note is that the bottom of the cakes have a clustered frosted flake crust. I think it provides a nice crunchy textural contrast to the sponge and frosting. I liked the cereal cluster bottom, but I could see some finding it a bit of an acquired taste. The ordering and pickup process was very smooth, though the bakery was crazy busy both times I went and I did have to wait a bit in line. The bakery only accepts cash.

Stiff competition with Fay Da around the corner but I still come here for the egg tarts (I like the mini ones but the rest of my family loves the Portuguese ones, which we get here also) and the sesame balls (though they are of a monstrous size). Expect long lines but they do move fairly efficiently. We spent $56 in pastries and they gave us a free calendar (spent $60 at Fay Da and got nothing).

I've been here before, everything is good. The cakes and pastries are not very sweet, lighter compared to American desserts. More to my taste. I ordered: 5*Chestnut cake: my favorite 3*hot Milk tea: unfortunately sugar was added. I would have preferred black. Also ordered 4*Scallion roll 5*Egg white custard 5*Portuguese style egg custard

First time here last Monday. New Year's Day. Busy as line was out the door. Now I know why! Delicious Chinese baked comfort items everyone loves. Dan Tats, baked Cha Siew Baos, and my fav are the Sesame Balls w/red bean paste- nice and crispy and huge! Plus a large assortment of cakes, and other fav items. They have a system where you gather your items on a tray, shove it inside the lucite partition stay in line and keep an eye when your tray is up- then you can order the extra items inside the cases. Pay at the end of the counter. Cash is king here!

I love the baked goods. Everything is made to order and is delicious. I really like the freshness of all the baked goods.

This place has one of my all-time favorite food items in the city: the $2.50 scallion roll. The bread has a thin layer of mildly sweet custard, with both sides covered in a delightfully salty pork floss. The outer edge has a thin layer of egg with small slices of ham. This brings back so many fond memories of my childhood, when I'd sneak sprinkles of pork floss on everything at dinner time and my mom cooking up eggs with ham. I've bought this scallion roll over 20 times since coming to the city, and every time, Tai Pan delivers at the highest level. It's the perfect snack to me: the delicate layer of egg, the combination of textures, and the sweet and salty flavor profile. I don't feel too strongly about Tai Pan's other items (I'd probably rate them somewhere in the 3-3.5 star range on the basis of consistency, flavor, and freshness) but I will always hold the scallion roll near and dear to my heart.

Disappointed. Ordered the elegant green tea red bean cake two days in advance (first picture) and got a green tea strawberry cake with a totally different decoration style (second picture). Instead of the elegant looking cake displayed on the order page, they gave me this gummy bear filled sprinkled M&M one lol. Nothing like this is shown on their website or described in the calls. The cake still was very good, but wasn't the one I ordered/expected and just told "it is what it is". Why not make it clear beforehand? Also it's chinatown how do you run out of red bean 24 hours in advance.

Came here after some dimsum. It's a classic Chinese style bakery with various baked items, breads, and desserts. The store was pretty busy and chaotic, since part of the store is pick your own and the other part you have to ask for specific items. I got a curry puff and it was pretty good, with a very flaky outside and savory filling. I should've gotten the desserts though, they looked even better. The prices are also average for Chinese bakeries, which is really good for Manhattan. I'll definitely be coming back to try out other stuff there.

OMG this cake was SO good. It had some sort of sweetened cereal my boyfriend kept fighting for more for. It was overall just the right amount of sweet and would definitely get it again! Can't say I know anywhere else to get a cereal cake from!

11.28.22 I ordered the Roast Pork Puff and the pastry was dry. There was more dough and not enough pork. I threw out a lot of the pastry. Not worth the line to me. My SIL got a pastry, which she enjoyed. It wasn't memorable so I wouldn't return if I were in the area.

I haven't visited Tai Pan Bakery lately as it has gotten very crowded, but the line looked okay on a mid-day weekday, so I decided to try them out again. They have a small area for indoor seating, I believe. Inside, most of their breads and pastries are on display, some are grab-yourself and some are served from the counter. Make sure you like up via the tray line on the counter. Portuguese Style Egg Custard (Tart): Super delicious, with a very nice creamy, sweet flavor to the custard. We got new batch, so they were still nice and warm. The crust was noticeably crispier compared to the regular egg custard tart. Not too sweet at all though. Egg Custard (Tart): Your classic egg custard tart, still delicious. More of an egg-y(?) flavor compared to the Portuguese style one, which still tasted good. the crust on this one seemed much flakier too. Mango Rice Cake (Mochi): Very yummy, not too sweet but has a nice mango flavor. The mochi outside is nice and sticky/chewy, as expected. The inside contains a mango flavored cream filling, which is light and refreshing. It is quite large though, so I usually split it into 2-3 servings. Chicken Pie: Very flaky crust and creamy chicken filling inside. I do have to say that this pastry is too buttery for me. I'd recommend eating it in 2 or 3 servings instead of all in one sitting.

This place probably has hands down the best egg tart! I'm from SF and have tried a lot of egg tart bakeries around SF Chinatown, but this is the most memorable. Service is very rushed and can seem rude at times but that should be expected from authentic places like this. I don't mind it since I understand that's the norm. Plus this place can get really packed during the weekend noon rush. This is a cash only spot.

We brought some cake and bread from them, all pretty fresh and tasty. Especially the things they got are cheap. However, some staff there are not very nice. This place is a little small as well. You might bump into someone when turning around.

Workers at the canal street Taipan are very rude. They ruined the reputation of an otherwise great bakery.

Yum! We stopped by Tai Pan Bakery as a recommendation by NYC friends' recommendation. Do expect a line and we waited maybe 20 minutes before being able to check out. This is a place you grab pre-wrapped goods with tongs and stick them onto your tray. We grabbed a hot dog bun, a sweet bun, and some egg tarts. I don't speak Mandarin at all, but was able to get all the items I wanted and check out easily. Prices were super cheap and reasonable and we enjoyed everything!

I probably been here years ago when I first moved to NYC, but I haven't really have the desire to go to an Asian bakery. I am over the carbs, but I do have a soft spot for egg waffles. I used to get it from the street vendor that was closer to Baxter and Mulberry, but I can't find the cart anymore. I was talking to my acupuncturist and his sister, who's the receptionist told me about this place for egg waffle. Yes, it is good, but unfortunately it is not made to order and not to mention it sits in this huge plastic container. If you order more than one, than you have to waste two plastic containers rather than traditional paper wrapper. I wish they would make it upon order and give it to you in paper rather than this big clunky plastic container. I cannot for the sake of the earth, purchase these waffles here and again, it's not fresh. I want it piping hot. I tried their taro bun and didn't care for it because I think it is coated with faux coconut.

I chose Tai Pan because it had a line (which meant it was popular) but not TOO crazy of a line because who waits in a line like that? The egg custards were legit and only $2. You grab a tray and the packaged pastries on your own, then they form a line behind the counter using the trays tell them what items behind the counter you want to add to your tray. It seemed a bit confusing and disorganized at first but the system seems to work. Cash only.

Expect a line whenever visiting - this is a bakery popular among the younger and outsider demographic. You can expect to find freshly baked breads (their pineapple bun is hard to beat with how fresh, soft, and chewy it is). Go to the back, start with grabbing a tray and examining the bun selection, then make your way to the counter/refrigerated section and place your tray on the countertop. They will ask you which tray is yours once they start processing them. They always seem to have pineapple buns available but will sometimes run out of the rest by the late afternoon (such as coconut buns). In the refrigerated section, they also sell treats like cake slices (I'm a fan of their cheesecake - more of a Japanese cheesecake) and egg tarts. IMO, other bakeries make better egg tarts, but I'll still wait in line just for their pineapple buns. Cash only.

Nice bakery in Chinatown to grab a wide variety of asian baked pastries and buns. They are so busy and have such high turnaround with their goodies that everything is constantly fresh. Prices are great and there's a small amount of seating that will allow you to eat your buns on the spot. Cash or Venmo only and be prepared to move quickly through the line. Sweet and savory buns available.

For #thankyouthursday I wanted to show some love for Tai Pan! Since I moved to NYC, Tai Pan has been my go to for egg tarts. Every time we do dim sum, it's a tradition to make our way to Tai Pan, wait in line (max 10min) and pick up some egg tarts and an occasional giant sesame ball (they do have a few dim sum items too). They also have a full bread and pastry section, including cakes and mini desserts. They also have regular egg tarts, but the Portuguese are by far my favorite. Do yourself a favor and pick up a few to bring home! Pop them in the toaster and you'll never look back.

Baked goods are good, bread is loose and not dense. Service is what it is they want you out quick get what you want to cause most is behind the counter they grab for you. No tables for you to enjoy it's in and out. I'll go back to try different things for sure

Tai Pan is a classic Chinese bakery with cheap, delicious breads, cakes, and other goodies! I'm personally obsessed with pineapple buns, and I've gotten them at multiple bakeries in Chinatown but Tai Pan's pineapple buns are my new favorite at $2. Their other bread options look good, and they also have a wide selection of cake slices as well. Like many places in Chinatown, this place is cash only!

One of my favorite bakeries in Chinatown. It's chaotic so be prepared to be thrown into some madness but the breads are so good and the people are actually very nice! My favorite things here are the pineapple cha siu bao and the beef curry puff.

Taipan used to be one of our go-to bakeries as a kid, when my parents would take us into Chinatown many weekends. The prices have now shot up, with buns STARTING at $2, while the quality seems to have gone down (i.e. fewer ingredients in the buns). I remember loving their corn/ham buns back in the day but now they're very lackluster. It's mostly just a plain bun with a few small pieces of ham along with soggy corn. Iced teas/coffees have gone up as well. I didn't get a drink this time because I didn't think it would be worth the $4 price tags. The pork sung bao is pretty solid though, so it seems like some buns are just hit or miss nowadays.
