Where to Sip Soothing Teas in Portland

"Portland restaurant industry vet Eric Arthur took over the space once home to Red Robe Tea House in Old Town, hoping to save a longstanding third place for Portland’s tea lovers. Arthur and tea curator Kevin Von Buren picked a lineup of teas focused on their impact on the body, with an emphasis on oolong and pu’erh. Taiji also offers a more relaxed take on gongfu tea service, as well as tango lessons and a menu of pan-Asian dishes from Arthur’s Filipina-Cantonese grandmother’s cookbook." - Nathan Williams, Eater Staff

My daughter and I stopped in after visiting the neighboring museum hoping for a unique experience like Portland often has to offer. Taiji Teahouse definitely provided that! It is clear they are passionate about tea and its usefulness when it comes to wellness. Our host patiently explained how to steep each tea well and we both really enjoyed our selection of tea along with the experience of steeping it ourselves. I am very sensitive to caffeine and this did not cause jitters or a crash. It was remarkable. The food was delicious, too! We ordered the Korean chicken and the noodle dish. Both were excellent. I can’t wait to go back with some friends!

This is a MUST go and please go soon. The tea is amazing and the food is too. They have gluten-free and vegan options! The ambiance is beautiful too so if you can sit and eat there, please do. And talk to the owner if you aren't sure what tea to try. He will figure out the best one for you.

Tons of delicious vegan options! The tea was a very fun tourist experience in our own city. Eric was knowledgeable and very enlightening.

I came into Eric's shop to treat myself to a thai massage and tea service. I ordered the sweet lime tea and it was so refreshing. I didn't order food this time but I will be back again to do so. Rayn's massage was wonderful!

Authentic and unique Chinese tea experience in Portland! The nice tea set reminds me of the chill atmosphere where I had conversations over tea with Chinese business owners. The first cup of tea to warm up and clean the cup is pretty Cantonese style and the almond cookie coming together with the tea makes the experience really delightful! Reading the fun poem on the wall while the hot tea drives away the coldness on a rainy day just ease all the hustle and bustle in me! Shared my experience in Chinese social media RED(Xiaohongshu) and hope more people can enjoy this special experience😍

Eric was an exceptional host. Based on my discussions with Eric, they are very knowledgable about the smallest details of tea! I decided on & then had a plethora of cups of the 'Wizard's Brow' tea. I believe it is based on the rare Hong Pao tea. Honestly, the tea did not disappoint!! I was surprised that the tea leaves just kept giving batch after batch of wonderful brew for me to study under. I was studying for a couple hours during the chilly winter downtown, and this teahouse was a delightful oasis. After countless steeps, where Eric gracefully kept filling my hot water, and even threw in new tea leaves, & even an Almond Cookie [it was actually one of the best almond cookies I've ever had]. I will definitely be coming back to this oasis for the tea, ambiance, and being spoiled by this awesome place! :-)

Ordered takeout on the way to the train. Tasty and good value. I was already eating when I thought of the photo. Refreshing chicken dish. I chose rice but you can have salad or soup. Good to have something a little healthy.

My family and I came here out of chance to drink some tea before continuing our tourist activities. To our surprise we found such a fun gem of a shop where not only was the tea delicious, fragrant and an authentic taste and experience, but we got to chat with the shop owner and saw parts of himself in the shop. My dad was especially taken by the Chinese poem on the wall. 10/10 would come back for a chill chatty tea experience. His almond cookies were also spectacular. ☺️

Yelp
Gluten free review: I popped into the Taiji teahouse and let me tell you, it was so yum. The owner? A real gem. If you're lost in the tea jungle, fear not, he'll guide you to the promised tealand! Now, I didn't snap a pic of the menu (oops!), but hey, gluten-free gang, there's one dish for us and did I dive right in. Fresh, yummy goodness! So fresh and yummy! Service? Top-notch! The vibe inside is that of tranquility for your soul, my sweet little pickles. If you're done in Portland, I suggest trying the Taiji House.

Yelp
Not just a cup of tea, but a wonderful Chinese tea drinking experience. The focus is on sitting and enjoying the tea from a tea pot. The flavors change with each successive steeping. I plan to come back and spend more time here.

Yelp
Eric was a very generous and knowledgeable host who made sure we had exactly what we needed and desired on our tea journey. His family food recipes were delicious, and the ginger chicken is a must have! The ambiance is pleasant, and the decor very calming and lovely. Most definitely recommend visiting this new and lovely shop.

Yelp
This is is an artisanal tea house restaurant-- pretty much unique in the care taken in the preparation, presentation and serving of blood and drink. They aspire to mindfulness and they're working on it.

Yelp
My friend Matthew and I went the other day for the first time. I loved how the space felt like someone's home. After being treated to a delicious sensuous tea with a complete explanation of how to get the best of of the tea, Eric presented us with a plate of perfectly cooked noodles and vegetables. What a delight to see this dish with vibrant colors of red, purple, orange and green! The seasonings were correct in every way and swirled about the vegetables and noodles like a laughing brook! The experience was more than delightful. It was bliss. Taiji Teahouse is an oasis in the neighborhood. There is a running chess game in progress where anyone can make a move. It's a good space to contemplate, study, get some quit work done. Eric also hold tai chi practice there and Tango lessons. I wish Eric tenfold success in his already amazing teahouse.

Yelp
The host was knowledgeable and passionate. He asked us what type of tea we liked and suggested one we hadn't tried that we thoroughly enjoyed. The food was also very good and the almond cookies are excellent. The ambiance is quiet and serene.
