Yi Wei Pin

"Splitting from Fu Sheng Hao, a household name in the realm of Taiwanese savoury rice pudding known as wagui, the owner started Yi Wei Pin in 2013 to amplify his grandpa’s culinary legacy. Much darker in colour than its Taipei counterparts, the wagui is made with local rice milk, freshly slaughtered pork, velvet shrimps and house-braised ground pork sauce. Try it with washabi or minced garlic also. Their milkfish thick soup is also popular." - Michelin Inspector

One Day in Tainan: A Self-Guided Food Tour | Eater

"There’s no satisfactory translation of the savory steamed rice pudding-like dish known in Taiwanese dialect as wha guay. To help, Yi Wei Pin has a chart on the wall that shows the precise order in which the kitchen assembles up to 500 bowls each day: At the bottom there are two freshly cooked shrimp, a piece of pig’s foot, and a tiny strip of pork loin. A little diced braised fatty pork is added, then the bowl is filled with cooked rice that has been ground into a liquid, then steamed. Just before serving, pureed garlic, a sweet-ish spicy sauce, mild wasabi paste, and soy sauce are poured on top of the wheaty-tasting snack. The elements arrive unmixed, so feel free to stir everything together, or as many prefer, don’t, and instead delight in the variety of each bite. Open: 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.; closed Tuesdays. Price: from $30 TWD ($1 USD) Directions: Take a few steps to the north toward the store where the sign incorporates an image of a toad." - Steven Crook

It was a small shop in Yongle Market, with few tables and chairs for dining in. No air con but only electric fans were available, though it was not a big deal to us. Queuing was less than 5 minutes. $40/bowl and the food was quickly prepared by professional and friendly aunties (they could not speak English so we used body language instead). The fish cake soup was absolutely amazing and unique. Really loved it!!!

Taste interesting and good, very filling, feel full eating it. Very cheap price. Place a bit crappy and hot. The perfect experience is to order one sticky soup one rice pudding, then to share by 2 people. The one problem is that it's very crowded, the table and seat are uncomfortable.

It’s a typical Tainan street food stall. Spaces are tight and you likely have to share a table with others. 碗粿 is one of the best you will find in Tainan. There are lots of ingredients in the 碗櫃 but I think the best part is the sauce and you must add a small spoon of garlic sauce.

This place is a good example of great local food in Tainan that can’t go wrong. I prefer Tainan’s version over traditional white rice cake. The soup is absolutely amazing. You can taste the freshness and texture.

Honestly, as a foreigner, when you first glance at the shop name and what they are selling which translates to bowl cake, you probably have something else in mind. But the moment when you are served something that is totally different and with the first bite together with the gravy, it is something amazing and not commonly found. There are plenty of seats inside, so you can enjoy the bowl of goodness. My only wish was that the boss could have guided tourists on the best way to enjoy the delicacy, as well as advising what the sauces were (there was wasabi but I thought it was a celery mix). Nevertheless, I would come back for this.

Wonderful wa kway. Traditional taste at its best. Only 2 items on the menu and bot tasted great!

Google
Have to douse it with sauce, as the rice cake is quite dense. Really good, highly recommend The fish soup is a sour and jelly like, kinda like a sweet and spicy soup.

Started here for breakfast, Michelin bib and it wasn't too crowded very affordable wagui. It takes a bit to enjoy it as it has weird texture but you eventually get to enjoy it. Can just try for laughters

Yelp
southern style Taiwanese rice cake. The rice cake is seasoned with soy sauce precook and appears brown in color. This particular shop has its origins from the same family that started the famous FuShengHao(富盛號)personally for me, it's a bit salty but it's delicious regardless.

Yelp
Wa guei (碗粿) is my absolute favorite food ever!!! Wa guei is basically a steamed rice cake, with somewhat similar texture as 蘿蔔糕 (daikon radish cake), but better. It's covered in this sweet soy sauce based paste and holds lots of goodies like dried shrimp, fish cake, meat (these vary by place). My aunt and uncle know how much I love wa guei so they always come to this place to get me some. Thank god I have relatives in Tainan who know where all the best places are. Unfortunately Tainan is the only place you can get it the most authentic and delicious. My cousin tells me you can't get this kind of 小吃 in Taipei. Or you can get it, but it's definitely not as good or cheap. And Tainan wa guei is essentially non-existent in the US. If you're in Tainan, definitely hit up this place to get a taste of how good Tainan street food is.
