The 17 Best Restaurants in Ashland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Locals and visitors embrace Taj’s unfiltered take on Indian cuisine. It’s all the biryanis, tandooris, vindaloos, masalas, curries, and paneer dishes you know and love, as well as dishes like malai kofta — mixed vegetables, nuts, and cheese sauteed in a cream sauce — or aloo gobi, cauliflower and potatoes simmered with garlic and ginger. All of those dishes are served in a cool vintage building and loads of comfortable seating." - Susanne Robertson

Really great Indian food! I really enjoyed the goat, curry and naan plate. The service was great and they have a little selection of Indian beers, which was nice.

Google
Outstanding Indian food! We had dinner on the patio with our dog as we were passing through Ashland on the way home to Portland. Absolutely delicious - we ordered garlic naan, Chana masala, and fish tikka. Absolutely delicious - wish this was closer to home! Must try.

Sunday afternoon I was searching for food options while on my way to San Francisco. The server was kind enough to allow me in at 2:35pm when they close at 3pm for lunch. A beautiful restaurant in a beautiful town. I was lucky to get parking just outside else you have to park a bit farther maybe couple minutes away. They were serving buffet and all food was fresh and delicious. The options included goat curry too which I was surprised to see since the entire buffet option costed $17 and elsewhere you would find a goat curry for that same amount . The server was kind enough to come by at 2:55 pm to check if I needed anything else. A great spot for some good Indian food. Hope I can be back!

Unfortunately, I was really disappointed here. The good reviews made me think that this place would be good so we came for my birthday. We had paneer tikka masala and butter chicken. Both were bland, chicken had some weird bites, there wasn’t much chicken or paneer in the dishes, and the naan was overdone. The vibe was pretty weak, service was lackluster, and overall I regret us coming. I’d recommend looking harder for a different restaurant.

Google
The Taj lunch buffet is a legend amongst Pacific Crest Trail through-hikers, and it's not hard to see why. Simply delicious all-you-can-eat Indian food at $16/person. I haven't been as impressed with food ordered at dinnertime, but it's still very good. Don't miss out if you're passing through the area!

Lyle Griffin

Google
Creative food and drink menu that's very popular with the locals. Outstanding Indian fare, with an excellent selection of cocktails and wines. Try the Spicy Margarita -- a favorite cocktail with an Indian flair!

Google
best buffet, and the employees totally love when I roll in on the one wheel. I took some pictures of the art and sculptures in here, really cool stuff but I guess the owner spotted me and told one of the servers to let me know I shouldn't take pictures - too late though because I captured almost all the awesome art that is in here and am sharing with you now. The food is amazing and I think they might even use real ghee in their recipes - traditional style. I so love the food and service here, I will be a regular customer whenever visiting ashland and the rogue valley.

Google
Lunch buffet, outstanding food. Everything was fresh and hot we came in around 1pm. Staff is friendly, helpful, and attentive without hovering. No bad choices here.

Yelp
We did not plan to eat Indian Cuisine this night, but glad we did. The food, service, and ambiance on the patio were all great! We ordered the Fried Onions and the Naan as appetizers. Then the Tikka Chicken Kabob and Curry Chicken as our entrees. Both were so good! We did end up taking most of the Chicken Kabob home. It's 15 pieces of chicken. I'm not sure I could finish it, even without the appetizers! Sharing is caring!

Yelp
Great tasting cuisine and nice service - lunch buffets most days around 16 pp Good flavors

Yelp
We came in right when they opened for dinner and they were ready and waiting. The staff was very friendly and gave some recommendations when we asked. We had the paneer tikka masala (very good), aloo gobi (very good), vegetable curry (good), garlic naan (amazing), cheese naan (very good), paneer pakora (very good, but is salty if you are sensitive to that), and vegetable samosa (good). Rice is included in the price of entrees. The tikka masala and garlic naan were the stars. The food was quick, but we never felt rushed while eating and chatting. Water was promptly and regularly refilled. They kept the restaurant and bathrooms very clean. The restaurant is very pretty, with lovely quiet music playing.

Yelp
Our program manager was retiring and since we were not going to see her after this year since our program is done for us, we took her out to eat. She wanted Indian and liked coming here. It is a cute unassuming place that has an inviting feel. Although our director is dying to repaint the walls...LOL! We ordered the spinach pakora, which I've never had, and it was really good! The tandoori chicken which was moist and tender! Another new dish for me was the baingan bhartha, eggplant with onions and tomatoes, and delicious, so I had three helpings! And the chicken tikka masala, which was very good! The garlic naan was delicious as well! Overall, a very fine meal. Service was attentive and cordial. It was a very nice dining experience! I would definitely come back, especially for that eggplant!

Yelp
Really fresh food, fast and polite service, good pricing, simple decor. Very solid Indian place with convenient hours too--open for dinner on a Monday in January when so many places are shut. I'm glad I found it!

Yelp
Overall good downtown option without blowing the bank. Decent outdoor dining porch nice for warm summer/fall evenings, and decor is relaxing inside. Pleasant and responsive service. Tasty meats and complex spices made the entire table pleased with their meals.

Chris C.

Yelp
Amazing food, very good service. The buffet is fantastic. Consistently awesome place over the years.

E S.

Yelp
The food was flawlessly prepared and seasoned just to my liking: spinach pakoras, broccoli, dal, roti. Fast and courteous service. Comfortable atmosphere with nice decor. I'm gonna repeat: spinach pakoras. With mango chutney and a cold gin and tonic.
google avatar

Geoff J.

Yelp
Very good Indian food at a reasonable price. Good value, prompt and friendly service. Large portions so be mindful if you don't have a fridge for leftovers if staying in an hotel.
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
The food was good both times I went, they were friendly, and it had a nice ambiance with art and seating outside. Service was quickly and efficiently, and the gentleman seemed eager to help.

Yelp
UPDATE- i complained to chow now and they called the owner. the owner or worker lied to ChowNow and said i usually order 3 entrees and got more rice when i ordered 3 but i got how much i got if i ordered 2 entrees. i had ordered two entrees 2 other times- once on ChowNow and once on doordash- both times i was given more rice. the owner also said they offered me to come and get more rice- they did not. super dishonest. i ended up throwing out the 2nd saag as i had no rice to go with it and who scoops pureed spinach into their mouth and eats it as a meal (with no rice)??? We were eating here a lot and we would always get given a good size rice to go with our two or three entrées we purchased (rice comes with the entrees so you do not pay extra for it). Today they gave us a small box of rice that is the same size box as the Samosa goes in and it's literally not enough rice for more than two people for one serving of food (it's also HALF the size of the rice they have given us every other time) We ordered two containers of food as we use it to eat 2 meals (dinner tonight, lunch or dinner again tomorrow) and there is not enough rice to eat with the amount of food we have. Kind of ridiculous. I called and spoke with the man who answered the phone and he had zero customer service skills was arguing with me that it was 32 oz (see pic attached- it was definitely no where near 32 oz and further it was not packed full either so whatever size the container was it was not full of that much rice) and he made no attempt to rectify the situation. I have been eating indian food since my 20's and have been to India twice. In India the rice is equal to the dhal/curry/saag on top if not more rice than the food. What they gave us tonight was 2 times the amount of food and half the rice needed for it. There is $15 worth of food I have no rice to eat with it now. As the saag is like baby food (puree) you don't really eat it by itself. I have had a couple issues here- once I requested low spice and they made it so spicy my child could not eat it. One other time they gave us this small box of rice and I called and they brought us another one and said sorry. This time the guy was arguing saying that is all the rice we get. I was buying takeout 2-4 times a month. Not anymore

Yelp
We just had dinner here and it was great, I highly recommend it. The service was quick and they were very polite and attentive. The food was amazing. I wish we lived closer, we would be here all the time.
google avatar

Yelp
Ya they have good food but I've experienced the owners being overly dominant to their customers. Last time I ate here, the owner was threatening a woman over a misunderstanding of a bill. I helped disarm the intense situation. Was so awkward, unacceptable. I recently experienced the owner bullying another businesses customers behind them so am writing this review. They do nothing with the back patio which is a huge bummer for the community. Sorry but the owner is a bully and coward. I don't support this place regardless of the good food, not worth it.

Yelp
One of our favorite restaurants in Ashland. If you are craving Indian place this is the place to go. The tikka masala is delicious!

Jake A.

Yelp
It's good Indian food. It's also hit or miss with how friendly people will be. Not huge portions, always wish they gave you more naan! Good buffet most times.

Rachelle L.

Yelp
Excellent quality, fresh and rich flavors. Best vegetable korma I've had in years and I love their tikka masala and butter chicken. They also have gluten free garlic naan.
google avatar

Gene A.

Yelp
Food was mediocre, I LOVE Indian food but it varies from one city and country dramatically. To be fair my lovely wife things it's ok. I've tried it 4 times over the last two years keep hoping it was me. Unfortunately it is me, I just like great or good quality Indian food. Service is ok but prefer take out since the ambiance leaves a lot to be desired like a lot of Indian places. Also the times I have been inside the staff never seems congenial. Guess I need to go back to Paris for the best iD food ever or maybe India.
google avatar

Natalie B.

Yelp
Nw I know why they do so many to go orders, my husband called at 5 and he was told there was a 40 minute wait, I putted around the thrift shop killing time and went into pick up he order 40 minutes later, there was only two tables sat. When I got home I was surprised to learn that the food was hot and tasty and the portions were larger than getting in the store, we had enough for a second meal. It was very good. Remember to ask for 2-3 if you like it hot, anything over 3 is painful.
google avatar

Sheri C.

Yelp
This is one of the best Indian restaurants in Southern Oregon. Never a disappointment. The buffet is great and available 7 days a week. We had a pumpkin side dish HALWA that was crazy good! I had never had it before and gobbled 2 helpings.
google avatar

Azizi N.

Yelp
Incredibly fortunate for Ashland folk that we have this resource! Front and back of the house (servers and kitchen) alike are absolutely on point. Dining in experience is lovely, and takeout portions are equally generous. One of few places in town I am consistently happy to go eat. My compliments to the crew at Taj I go for veg korma and tofu masala with garlic naan, but there's a wide array to explore on their menu. Enjoy!

Yelp
We arrived at our hotel and looked for something close. We found this around the corner and ordered takeout. We had the cauliflower appetizer and the samosas. Then the lamb curry and chicken masala. Everything was beyond good. It was fantastic. Perfectly spiced and everything was tasty. The service was good and the food came up quickly. Highly recommend

Rebecca M.

Yelp
The best butter chicken and the kindest service, with a warm, friendly environment. Thank you!

Andrea A.

Yelp
Been to a few Indian cuisines here in the area and this one is by far the best one. The all you can eat buffet is so worth it the quality of the food is amazing, and it's super filling. I been eating here all week since I discovered this gem
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
This has been the BEST, Indian food I have ever had. Granted I am from Northern Nevada however, I have tried many Indian restaurants. You need to eat hear if you're in the area, also all their food local and to the best of their ability organic.

Eliz Uliana M.

Yelp
Delicious! Went for lunch buffet and each dish was scrumptious. Have been in WV for 4 years with no great Indian options. My Ashland friends love this place. It's their go-to Indian spot. I was blown away and ate far more than I had planned on, including dessert which I usually skip. Decent prices and very attentive and kind wait staff. Yum!

Mat M.

Yelp
The only name in lunch buffet. Abcdef etc and more characters to meet the near minimum.
google avatar

Liam S.

Yelp
I still love the food here, but service quality seems lower than ever. The buffet is not what it used to be, but definitely try the gobi Manchurian
google avatar

Saul M.

Yelp
Attentive, friendly staff; delicious cuisine. We like mild spices, and this was flavored perfectly. Nice wine selection; the claret was perfect. Will return when in town.

Karl C.

Yelp
One of the few spots opened on Christmas Day so the place was quite busy. Nevertheless, they were efficient and we were seated after a reasonable wait. Food was quite tasty; we had the vegetable samosas, tandoori chicken, butter chicken, and vegetable biryani. Would consider visiting again the next time we're in Ashland!

Amber C.

Yelp
The food was not only delicious, the waiters were also superb. I would recommend white rice with the lamb skewers. This nice and cozy restaurant downtown is one of the best restaurants I've ever been to.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
I'd stopped eating here 2 years ago because the food was pretty ordinary, but was persuaded to give it a try because they'd "changed" according to a friend. Well yes they have!! The food has completely turned around. Lots of flavor and well seasoned. However (and it's a big however) the staff appear to hate the customers. It's like when your partner is pissed at you but won't tell you why - you're just wondering what you've done wrong to deserve the silent treatment. It's a shame because it really detracts from the whole experience. Would recommend for take out :-)
google avatar

Andrea B.

Yelp
This place is incredible! The food is soooooo good, the restaurant is very warm and inviting, the outside eating area is so fun, and they are SO FAST. I am so impressed I ate here 3 days in a row. The butter chicken is so delicious it's my fave

Kaylee B.

Yelp
I'm a bit shocked, I don't remember Taj failing this bad last time I visited at the beginning of this year. This was gas station quality Indian food. As you can see, the vegetable curry was so watery, I almost guarantee they are using frozen vegetables, there was no flavor. The paneer tikka masala tasted like they used tomato bisque as the base, it was also very watered down and not creamy at all. The naan was burnt on all edges. Definitely not worth $14 a dish.
google avatar

Danielle C.

Yelp
My family and I have been here twice. ALL THE FOOD HAS BEEN AMAZING!! I feel like the inside isn't the best as far as environment goes and there's a slight language barrier when asking for specific things but the food is what it's all about and I like the outside patio. I highly suggest.

Z'andria L.

Yelp
Delicious food, nice variety. Hot and fresh foods, tender meats. Service was pleasant.

Kaytlyn A.

Yelp
We door dashed butter chicken and naan because I have never tried Indian cuisine until now. This was the best food I have ever had! So much flavor and you can tell everything was made with love. Will continue to go here every time I'm passing through from now on!

Jeanne S.

Yelp
Whenever I'm in Ashland I stop here at least once! Buffet is good & dinner even better! Get a Mango lassi!
google avatar

Carol G.

Yelp
Sooo good! My husband and I got lamb curry and chicken korma. Staff was friendly, it was totally worth the drive! We will be back!
google avatar

Todd S.

Yelp
Really great Punjabi cuisine. You will not be disappointed. This has been my go to Indian in the valley for well over 10 years. The samosas are awesome!
google avatar

Roddy W.

Yelp
I love Indian food. I love Ashland. I trusted the Yelp reviews. But, this was such a massive disappointment. The main server greeted me when I entered the restaurant with a look of frustration. I smiled and asked for a table... long story short not one of the staff said please or thank you once, or showed the most basic slightest simple manors during my whole visit. They had served two tables next to me with the wrong food and didn't apologize to them. Was the food good? it was okay. Will I ever go back? NO!
google avatar

Wholey C.

Yelp
Delicious! We ordered take out on Friday night. It still hot when we got home. Food: Lamb Vindaloo with basmati rice Served hot, I ate the entire order! Large pieces of lamb in a flavorful sauce. Perfect over rice or on naan. Paneer Tikka Masala is my favorite. Served hot, the flavors are blended, not spicy, generous portions of cheese. Put on rice and nana, you have a bite of heaven. Naan: garlic naan is perfect addition to the meal. Service: friendly and helpful. Our food was ready in 20 min. Cannot beat the service. Give them a try! Thank me later.

Liam M.

Yelp
Fast delivery, great tasty authentic selection. The eggplant dish is one of my faves.
google avatar

Tina G.

Yelp
So yummy! The appetizers & naan were my favorite. Service was great, sauces were incredible. I sat outside and the venue was clean. Will be going again soon
google avatar

Charmaine N.

Yelp
To begin, this place smells fantastic! It also has a welcoming interior. We had the $12.95 weekend lunch buffet. Great selection of vegetarian and chicken options. Their tandoori chicken tastes a lot like huli huli chicken which for me was great. Up until this place, I wasn't a fan of tandoori because it's always dry. We are only in Ashland for the weekend but as for Indian food, this place was better than anything our hometown has to offer. It's very good eats.
google avatar

Jak K.

Yelp
Love the food here so much! Great options for omnivores and vegans to both get excellent food. Worth going out of your way for the taste of the food alone. The service is friendly with their dry sense of humor and timely attention. Will absolutely be back
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Garlic naan, damn good, had chicken tikki masala, sauce was delicious, chicken was dry, overcooked, chewy :( hopefully it was just a one off
google avatar

Lori I.

Yelp
We did take out here for dinner when we stayed in Ashland. The food was good and the spinach pakora was interesting, I'd never seen that before. GLUTEN FREE NAAN! I have never ever seen gluten free naan at any Indian restaurant so I was excited to try the garlic naan, gluten free. It was pretty good, and worked well with the chicken tikka which was good, and we also got the spinach saag. Wish we could have done the lunch buffet so we could have tried more items. I ordered via mobile which was great since you could clearly pick all your options (tofu vs paneer), gluten free etc. They have options for vegans, gluten free eaters, and everything is marked clearly on the online menu.
google avatar

R T.

Yelp
My new favorite spot when I'm in Ashland! From the moment I stepped into the door the aroma of spices was so delightful! I couldn't wait to try their food. I had the buffet and really enjoyed the variety it offered. I loved all the flavors, spices and different tastes. The staff is super friendly & kind and the restaurant itself is nicely decorated & clean. Their Indian Chai is so yummy! Check them out!

Yelp
I don't know what they do with it but I'm pretty much addicted to Indian food and I have to have it at least once a week. As you can imagine, road tripping through Oregon (from California) was not the most gastronomically pleasing experience for me so it was really amazing to find such a place en route back to California! Decor 5/5: You can tell that Taj really values cleanliness - from the Tables, buffet presentation to the bathroom. Everything was very well taken care of! Food 4.5/5: Really should be 5/5 given the surroundings, but personally I personally give it 4.5 because a lot of the dishes seemed to lack spice! (this is probably run by north indian folks?). On the other hand, The North Indian foods - tandoori chicken, naan and they even offered ROTI at one point, were fantastic! The buffet is split into two tables: Table 1 - mostly your salad bar, with fruits, chutney and dessert Table 2 - you have your curries, aloo mutter, rice, naan etc here Selection is pretty decent and otherwise the food was great (minus the spice). I do want to also note that the butter chicken is a little off (I think they might have skipped tomato?), but their curry chicken is great! Service 4/5: This was the most unappealing aspect given the other great things about Taj Indian Cuisine so I saved it for last. Service was a definitely quite fast - they clean ur plates as soon as you leave and they refill the buffet rather quickly when needed. However, this also seemed to mean that they we're also very quick to shut things down when the buffet ended at 3pm. Turned the music off, asked us for last servings and broke down the whole buffet table all within 10 minutes. I guess it's reasonable given that their hours are explicitly labeled but still a little disappointing to see this sort of behavior as I was still in the middle of enjoying the buffet. Pro-tip - Arrive at least an hour before closing times!

Yelp
Got take out. Delicious dishes. Naan was soft and chewy. The carrot pudding was perfect! I would recommend this place for anyone craving Indian food. Noticed the 'heat levels' were pretty mild. Mild, medium, spicy.....spicy more like medium spice, which is a good thing!
