Where to Dine Solo in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Pair its from-scratch ramen (which comes in both classic and creative takes) with a seat at the bar or a communal table and you are set. Tajima’s locations around North Park, East Village, and a few other spots ensure that within central San Diego, ramen is just a bike ride or quick drive away."

Where to Find Vegan Ramen in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"With multiple spots across San Diego, Tajima is a mainstay of vegan ramen hunters. Monthly specials are frequently vegan-friendly, while the menu offers the plainly named Vegan Ramen. The translucent soy-vegetable broth holds spinach noodles with deep fried tofu, shiitake mushrooms, spinach, corn, baby bok choy, roasted cherry tomatoes, and sesame seeds. A drizzle of black garlic oil completes the meal." - Kelly Bone

The atmosphere was great. It feels cozy and nice. The food was ok, it does the job filling you up. My son agreed with me that something was missing, I don’t know what, perhaps “Love”. Overall Experience was good. Our waiter was a little forgetful, we had to ask him twice for chopstick helpers for my young son. We were not offered refill on water.

Google
Ordered take away with two beers. Both came in plastic bottles and in the same bag with hot soups. I called and they refunded the beers. However they didn’t say the beers wouldn’t come in the original glass bottles and they didn’t think cold beer should be put in a different bag as a hot soup. The portion of soup in each order is way smaller than the portion you would normally get dining in.

Google
This is one of my favorite ramen places to go to in San Diego. They have many different types for everyone and they're all delicious. The service and atmosphere are top notch, and their sake is a must have.

Google
Pretty mediocre food overall. Got the spicy sesame ramen. The noodles are sorta mealy and thin so it didn’t give that level of body seen at most other places around town. Also, had to add a lot (A LOT) of extra spice as it was the spicy level of a middle aged Midwestern person who thinks pepper is too hot. I also got the salmon roll. The structure was pretty shaky as it fell apart upon picking it up. Ended up just taking the salmon out and leaving the rest. Good service though.

Google
Wonderful experience at Tajima! I got the tonkotsu ramen and my friend got the Tajima white ramen. Both had good flavor. The tonkotsu only came with one piece of pork belly, for the price you’d expect more. The service was quick and the staff were attentive.

Google
The place is very chill, with a good vibe. You can get a quick bite or stay for a while. I ordered on a busy Friday night and my Ramen was quickly served. I was expecting to not taste good because I came out so quick, however it was delicious. Only downside is parking is tough.

Google
Tajima is always my go to place for ramen but this is my first time at this location. Ramen is always great, I always order the black garlic ramen so good. Broth is flavorful with just the right amount of thickness, pork is very tender. It also came so quickly. Server was Kalan and he is very professional and friendly. Matched it with a Matcha lychee refresher drink.👍👍

Google
Ive had ramen from Tajima about a dozen times since they opened. I would say they have the 5th-6th best ramen in San Diego. It’s not mind blowing but decent if you can’t get to the other good spots. Atmosphere is great with moody lighting, tables, and counters. Service can be hit or miss.

Yelp
Our go-to place for ramen! They have evolved the recipe but overall, we can't find another place who does it better. We love the garlic edamame, vegan ramen and pork ramen. Service was great and attentive! We'll be back!

Yelp
Stopped by Tajima Ramen North Park recently, since it was near an event venue I'd be going to later that night. I'll be honest, I wholeheartedly trust my Yelp community, so I was a little skeptical giving this place a try because of the mixed reviews...but now I get it! My review is a mix of pros, cons, and some missed opportunities. It's a small place with a lot of potential. The kitchen staff are hard at work and the service was not very attentive, but they were friendly. Lots of menu options with a few "popular" standouts. We went with the house hot sake, several appetizers and 2 different Ramens. Here's the food breakdown: - Spicy Garlic Edamame: 5/10 Although the portion size was good and it APPEARED to be packed full of flavor, since you could see the toppings...there was no flavor essence and they were bland to the taste. We very underwhelmed and disappointed by these. - Karaage: 9/10 Cooked to perfection, good flavor, decent portion size - Tajima Fries: 8/10 Unfortunately, the fries were not hot and lacked flavor, BUT the toppings distracted us from that. Had the fries been hot and salted even just a little, this app would've easily been a 10/10 - Creamy Chicken Ramen 6/10: Although the menu description made this Ramen seem to die for...it was reeeeally basic, the flavors did not come together to make this a standout dish by any means. - Spicy Sesame Ramen 6.5/10: In all fairness, this dish had a lot of potential, but the server missed the mark and did not include add-ons I ordered and did not remove an ingredient I specifically asked her to (more on our server later )...so, perhaps...had she gotten my order right, this dish may have been an 8/10. The level of spiciness seemed appropriate for a variety of tolerances, the sausage was flavorful, but again...nothing really stood out about this dish. Overall, the food was just "ok". There's a lot of potential, but most items left us underwhelmed at best. Service: Although everyone we encountered was friendly, our server/waitress was very inattentive. As previously mentioned, she made a lot of errors on my order, overcharged our receipt which had to be corrected multiple times, because she kept making mistakes, and she was gone and/or in and out of the bathroom a lot during our time there. So much so that by the time we were done, we had been helped by 4 different people, because she wasn't around and only checked on us 1 time. Perhaps she wasn't feeling well? But, it was frustrating having to hunt or flag people down to help us get things we needed and to report things she messed up. All in all...Tajima Ramen North Park seems to have potential, but they have a lot of room to grow. Not sure when or if I'll be back, but the mixed Yelp reviews for this place are accurate.

Yelp
Came to this north park location to meet a girlfriend for a quick weeknight dinner while I was in San Diego. I got dropped off with Lyft and saw that there was only street parking, so be aware of that. My friend got the spicy sesame ramen per our waiter's recommendation. I chose the tonkotsu ramen bc I was feeling like I wanted regular traditional ramen. Nothing bad, but nothing spectacular. That's all I have to say.

Yelp
Yummy ramen! Quick service. Nothing fancy but scratched the ramen itch effectively. Would come back for more

Yelp
Their Happy Hour menu is longer than an hour! Ha, ok it's incredible to have great deals that are affordable, especially in this economy! The staff members were phenomenal. They were extremely attentive, warm, and patience. I had an energetic, inquisitive, and independent six year old in my party. So huge kudos to the staff for taking care of us!!! The food were fantastic as well as the drinks: Edamame, Chicken Katsu Bao, and Lychee Matcha Refresher. Check out Tajima!

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and had the carnitas ramen. It looked and tasted like someone poured the contents on carnitas tacos into my ramen and I could not have been happier.

Yelp
Tajima is my favorite Ramen chain in San Diego. The ramen is always delicious, and their appetizer options are really good too. Located in North Park, it's in a much more fun area of San Diego; this location is great to go with friends or for a date. The one negative about this location is that it is fairly small, but if you go with a 2-4 person group, it's good. The service is okay. Most of the time it feels like their servers are too busy, not very attentive. That's what made me go 4 stars instead of 5. Overall, still very worth it.

Johnny Y.

Yelp
my buddy and I came down to San Diego for comic con. after a long day of walking this place hit the spot. I got the carnitas ramen which was a fun fusion or Mexican and Japanese cuisine. our server, Liliana , was kind and attentive.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
Tajima is one of my favorite go to ramen spots in San Diego. With many locations, you can always get your ramen fix. North park may seem small, but the wait is always worth it. The staff are always attentive and it has a great indoor decor and feels like you're in a mini ramen shop in Japan! Great placement in north park.
google avatar

Yelp
First time at Tajima (the North Park location) and what a wonderful experience it was. The place looks small from the outside but it does have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We started with the garlic edamame which did not disappoint. For our meals we ordered the carnitas ramen and the creamy chicken ramen, both EXCELLENT! The carnitas ramen was like nothing I've ever had before. Insanely delicious and highly recommend. We will be back for sure! The staff, were welcoming and friendly. All round, a 10 outta 10!
google avatar

Andreas B.

Yelp
ITS AIGHT! The only shout-out was the place was kinda cute, and the service was good! The food and the drink could've been better! VERDICT: I WILL NOT COMEBACK!
google avatar

Maria R.

Yelp
Great food! Great Service! Fresh food every time!!! Parking is kind of hit or miss but so worth it!

Christina B.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with their carnitas ramen and their aqua Fresca like fruit drinks!! They also make a delicious traditional ramen as well. They have a decent draft menu, this is one of my favorite places to casually hang out and eat with friends.
google avatar

Cathy N.

Yelp
Last time I order delivery. I feel like you get a lot less broth than eating in. Got regular when ordered black garlic. Feel like we got less edamame than usual as well. Food is good if you eat in.
google avatar

Yelp
My real score would be a 3.5 star if I could put that down. I walked here from my neighborhood so I didn't have to find parking. But I'd recommend to account for parking time if you drive here, north park has bad parking (we all know this). I didn't have to wait in a line either since I came on a Wednesday night. We got seated at the bar (which I preferred) and the workers were very fast and efficient. We got our food quickly which was great! The inside of the place looked amazing, it was very industrial and dimly lit in an intimate way. The finishes looked new. Oh! I found out Wednesdays has $6 wine glasses. I didn't order one but that's just nice to know for next time! Time to review the food - - Highball cocktail (not pictured): This had too much whiskey and not enough lemonade for my taste. If you prefer more whiskey then this would be perfect for you. It reminded me of my short trip in Japan since highballs are widely popular over there. - Spicy tuna fried rice : The rice to tuna ratio was off for me. The rice over powered the tuna but it was fried very well. I kind of wish it came with a dip or soy sauce. I dont know if I'd order this again. - Karaage: I also wasn't too impressed with this one. It came out looking so brown and crispy but when we stared eating it, the pieces were soft. It also came in larger chicken pieces which were awkward to bite off and chew. Maybe I'm just picky. - Tajima Black: This was the ramen that has the black garlic soup base. I thought it was decent but it had only 1 piece of tonkatsu :( it was delicious though but you'll probably end up ordering another piece if you're not satisfied.

Yelp
Ok I don't know where else to turn for support besides leaving a Yelp review as their website does not have a "Contact Us" link, and I have sent messages on social media that get zero responses, nor any acknowledgment. So here we go: Tajima has definitely gone through many changes. Some favorable, some not. I will say our go-to ramen was the creamy chicken. Well, apparently there's been yet another change. The creamy chicken ramen is no longer "creamy", apparently. Now it's like a clear, fatty, bone broth (similar to Nozaru's). It was flavorful, but very salty...and most of all, incomparable to the creamy chicken. What's even more frustrating, is I saw no announcements whatsoever of changing that flavor of ramen. I've had my share of ups and downs with Tajima, but this one is surely a downer.
google avatar

Eric R.

Yelp
I consider this the best place for ramen in San Diego and I've tried quite a few -- good variety with all the classic preparations and consistently executed to a high standard
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
Super delicious!! Well known place in SD. Some of the best ramen in town! Service is great, music is good , well taken care of restaurant. Everything we ate was sooo good. Definitely a must try place for all Ramen lovers. Parking kinda sucks in the area but, you can find some. Also this place gets busy in the evenings so if you go mid day you will probably have better luck getting a table right away. All in all, I'll be back! :)

Olivia C.

Yelp
Since they changed their ramen recipe i no longer go. Used to be my favorite. No more garlic chips, not as much flavor. Please go back!!!!! Also you should put descriptions if you are going to keep just saying red black or white
google avatar

Catherine B.

Yelp
One of my favorite ramen places! I have to admit, I tried this place years ago and for some reason didn't come back until about a year ago. Ever since, I'm there at least once a month! The food is delicious (and they even have vegetarian ramen!!) and the customer service is great. They're always helpful with packaging my to-go vegetarian food away from my husband's meat-packed ramen. The decor is great with a cozy ambiance. Parking sucks, but that's not the restaurant's fault.
google avatar

Zen X.

Yelp
Take my review with a grain of salt. This is a Ramen spot. But it was hot the day I went so I wanted something cold. I tried the spicy salmon poke bowl and was very disappointed. Essentially flavorless. Obviously rice and seaweed doesn't have a ton of flavor but even the salmon with spicy mayo was very underwhelming. You wouldn't go to a sushi place to order chicken karaage. Don't order the poke from a Ramen house.
google avatar

Lucy V.

Yelp
Love that they always greet you at the door as busy as they are assisting other customers my favorite ramen is the spicy sesame ramen definitely recommend and they have specials on tajima Tuesdays
google avatar

Mario A.

Yelp
First time there. Service and food were great. Definitely will be back next time we make a trip from Palm Springs.

Kate J.

Yelp
I got the worst food poisoning of my life from their spicy salmon poke bowl. I've never been so sick for so long. It was so bad I had to go to the hospital. A month later, I still don't feel 100%. I attempted to contact Tajima directly but they never responded to my call or message on Instagram (I could not find an email on their website). Beware: unsafe food practices!
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
The place was delicious for the vegan option but the meat option was nothing special. The vegan broth was so creaming and rich, I was blown away. It was one of the best vegan ramens I have had in a while. My friends got the Tajima Ramen and they said it was good but it didn't really stand out, but the thing that was good was Chicken Karaage. It was very juicy and well flavored. The atmosphere was very chill and the environment was fairly quiet. They had quite a few tables but nothing larger than a four seater. There is not a dedicated parking lot, just street parking.
google avatar

Katherine K.

Yelp
This is a really great ramen place! I've been here multiple times and I always leave full and happy. While it isn't the best ramen I've ever had, it's much better than most places I've been and you can't beat the price! Their karaage is always really crispy and the ramen ingredients are fresh every time. My favorite is their Spicy Sesame ramen. I've never found it to be too overwhelming with the spiciness, thankfully. Their staff is always very friendly and patient while waiting for you to decide what you would like. I'm lucky to live close to such a great place!
google avatar

Jennifer A.

Yelp
From the vegetarian perspective, tajima always gets a high score. The veggie gyoza and garlic edamame are great starters followed by the vegan ramen. It's creamy and delicious. I always add a ramen egg too. Only sad news was that the cheesecake advertised on the menu was not available at this location--a tease to see it listed in the dessert section.
google avatar

Jane A.

Yelp
UPDATE. (3.75 stars) Still the same decent ramen! Ramen isn't really my thing. I eat it, I like it, but I don't crave it. Others can debate with me on this but I like pho better than Ramen. This place, its on the good-side on the ramen spectrum but it is not my favorite ramen spot in San Diego. This place looks small from the outside but there is a back area with seating. Parking absolutely sucks in NP, the line is long, but this place knows how to handle the crowd with ease. TONKATSU RAMEN (pork) - the usual! The staff do well with maintaining the food without letting the rush of people compromise the appearance. The pork was a little too gelatinous for my liking and it looked more like a slab or pork belly instead of the rolled version of the pork belly as pork chashu. Broth was fair. RECOMMEND. POT STICKERS - they were the soft kind of pot stickers with barely any crispy edges. I prefer my pot stickers full on crunchy. TEMPURA BRUSSELS SPROUTS - loved it! Good crunch, good green and fresh flavor of the sprouts. I may have secretly liked this more than the ramen. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Until the next bowl of noodles...

Yelp
Love this place I come here with my girlfriend love this place. Spencer And Victor was amazing at service... and I can tell you that this place Has the best Ramen in the world. And my girlfriend is the best as well...

Yelp
Ramen is one of my favs and Tajima has some of the best! I life thé ambiance here and it really adds to the north park community. Our server was informative and so friendly and patient. Along with their amazing new menu items, they have an amazing deal for wine Wednesday where you can get a glass of your favorite wine for $5. Check it out! What we ordered: TAJIMA TACO NEW MENU ITEM Mexican inspired bun with house made ingredients and karaage PORK GYOZA Pan Fried Pork dumplings served with gyoza sauce SPICY SESAME RAMEN spicy tonkotsu pork broth, mixed with special sesame paste, egg noodles, ground pork, 1/2 ramen egg, corn, baby bok choy, green onio, and sesame seeds SPICY TUNA POKE BOWL* spicy tuna, spicy mayo, sesame seeds, edamame, seaweed salad, wonton crunch, and cut seaweed over steamed rice KARAAGE BOWL NEW MENU ITEM karaage, shred Cabbage, green onions, and sesame seeds, topped with spicy mayo, served on top of white rice SAKE FLIGHT NEW MENU ITEM

Yelp
Be aware from ordering from the app Toast! The Hostess/ Cashier was rude. She didn't believe me that this order was mine when I pulled the order up and showed everything I ordered. She was really not trying to give me the order because it doesn't show the name, but it does show everything you ordered. I wish I could take back my tip. She didn't even say thank you.
google avatar

Sean H.

Yelp
This is a sit down restaurant but with counter service! If you are bothered by tipping culture than this place is a good way to avoid that. I've been a regular of the original convoy location for years - Tajima has a history of being one of the first popular ramen spots in SD, years before the massive influx of competitors - so it holds a soft spot in my heart. I enjoyed the Tajima '23 and would recommend and additional half egg. Pork was actually a little too fatty for my tastes. The creamy chicken was also good! I did not receive any service after I sat down, and my appetizer came after my main, so next time I go I won't be so compelled to tip in advance :/. Cool interior with a Japanese feel, right off Adams St.
google avatar

Zachariah Z.

Yelp
Excellent service from our servers Jasmine and Rivka. This is definitely the highest quality of any of the tajima locations in both service and quality. My only complaint was the staff's inability to turn off the Christmas music upon request, and while I know that is no fault of their own, I hope management changes this policy to ensure a comfortable experience to all their guests
google avatar

Ella E.

Yelp
Vegan ramen was creamy and delicious! The spinach noodles were perfectly cooked and tasty. I liked the waitlist system, service was great, good ambiance especially sitting outdoors or near outdoors.
google avatar

Christina X.

Yelp
Food came out quickly. Taste is pretty decent. The broth is salty for me but I think it's normal for most ppl's preference. Server was friendly. I wish the ramen was served hotter. The broth was lukewarm and I really want hot ramen. Place is packed. It's good for a quick meal. Street parking only.
google avatar

Katy C.

Yelp
This fun ramen spot was near our Airbnb so Nate and I stopped in for some food right after checking in for our visit to SD recently. It was happy hour, so Nate got a $3 Sapporo and we also ordered the $5.50 karaage to start. To share we got the Tajima ramen with pork. Everything came out quickly and the karaage was amazing - the best I've ever had! It was super crispy, seasoned well, and a large portion to share. The dipping sauce was delicious but the chicken didn't even need it. I definitely scorched the roof of my mouth due to digging in too fast, but it was totally worth it. The ramen was really yummy! The broth was rich, and the pork was super tender. I wish it had more noodles and bok choy, but you can always add extra items for additional charges. They also have vegan ramen and carnitas ramen, which I thought was really interesting. I really enjoyed this spot and would visit often if I lived in the area.

Yelp
Just moved to North Park and tried this location for the first time. I enjoy the outdoor seating a lot, the creamy chicken ramen (that I always order) was excellent, and the iced green tea was really refreshing too. The edamame appetizer is good and comes out hot! Our server was so kind and helpful and my experience here was overall very enjoyable. I came on a Saturday night around 8pm and surprisingly it wasn't busy at the time and we were seated immediately! Love Tajima!

Dawn E.

Yelp
Have been to Tajima North Park a few times recently. Am volunteering down the street and walking home found Tajima!!! I never had really tried Ramen before and decided to stop in. Love the food and drinks and the service. Will continue ye to stop in to eat!!
google avatar

Joriene M.

Yelp
Food (5/5 stars): Tajima is one of my favorite ramen places in the San Diego area! Their chashu and egg are immaculate. I also appreciated the fried garlic and bok choy, which you don't find in most bowls of ramen. Highly recommend! Experience (5/5 stars): * Price: reasonable * Wait Time: minimal on an early Friday evening * Service: very good and friendly * Parking: quite difficult to find street parking * Ambiance: it has a sleek, contemporary ambiance. They also have a beautiful outdoor section with a tent and heaters
google avatar

Victor M.

Yelp
Best ramen I have had in the city. My fiancé and I really enjoyed the food here. Wait was approximately 15min to get seated and less than 5 minutes to get out food. Servers were very attentive of our needs. Definitely going back

Alicia T.

Yelp
Honestly it's just not what it used to be. This was one of my go to spots before Covid. Hadn't been back in a while but decided to stop by for a bowl. I typically always go with the traditional tonkatsu. The broth was still good but it came with no add-ins and the meat portion was very different than what it used to be, I honestly didn't end up eating it. The music wasn't the best for a Saturday night. The staff had low energy and service didn't make me want to come back. Overall just very average experience.
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
I got vegan ramen and tofu completely dissolved in the broth making it more of the stew than liquid. Overall ramen lacked any flavor and was really hard to eat. Servers were sweet and sake was strong but main reason why we stopped by, ramen, was mediocre, to say the least.
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
The party of nine you know who you are. Host staff, please consider seating smaller parties before the giant parties who choose to take up the entire restaurant without renting it out. This very small restaurant cannot accommodate big parties. So please make it a policy for giant parties to book ahead. Your smaller local customers are hurting outside waiting in the cold for an HOUR and you don't seem concerned. Thanks. Waiting outside in the cold for an hour waiting to be seated because we had to wait for a party of nine to be seated. Please seat smaller parties first since the party of 9 did NOT pay to rent out the entire restaurant.
google avatar

Taylor T.

Yelp
So flavorful and delicious, ordered for delivery even though it wasn't on DoorDash but worth it.
google avatar

Darlene B.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday evening. Since it's been pretty chilly, ramen felt like a good idea. I've been to a couple of other Tajima locations but it has been a while since I've been to one because I've been living out of San Diego so I wasn't super particular about what I wanted from here. Not sure if they've all changed, but at this location, you order right when you walk in from the person at the front before you get seated. The guy was friendly and even convinced us to order the cocktail they had, which was a soju drink (I think) with fresh grapefruit that you squeeze yourself. The food was good, I added black garlic oil to my ramen and it really added some oomph to the flavor of the broth. Ambiance was great, very intimate (read: not well lit).
google avatar

Yelp
I'm visiting from Hawaii and staying a few blocks from Tajima Ramen! The weather has been between 60-65 degrees, which is cold for me. I've walked over twice to get Ramen (noodles in broth) to warm me up. Delicious and Satisfying! I've ordered by phone and so easy to pick up. The broth is packed separately, so the noodles and accompaniments stay fresh. I've also had ordered the Gyoza and Chicken Karaage which are also prepared well. Service is friendly! I dined in a few years ago and enjoyed that too. Highly recommend! Posting photos of my recent orders that kept me warm! I'll definitely be back. They have other menu items I would like to try!
google avatar

Yesenia S.

Yelp
Food was delicious! I had the carnitas ramen which was a little spicy at first. The soup gave me pozole or birria vibes. And the Tajima fries are the best fries I've ever tasted! They are garlicy and cheesy. The service was also really good and quick! And the environment and restrooms were clean :)
google avatar

Yelp
Another Tajima that I haven't visited here in North Park and was consistent and delicious like all of the others. Great welcoming friendly customer service, just do the order right when walking in and paying and grabbing a seat. Simple and delicious Tonkotsu Ramen and the karaage with little effort on my part to enjoy an awesome meal. For sure will be back to this location when in the area.

Yelp
Stopped by this Sunday evening for dinner. Food: We started with the Takoyaki and a couple of hand-rolls. The Takoyaki was warm and exactly what I was hoping for. Then we moved onto the main course, their signature Tajima Ramen. Me and my partner both added carnitas to our bowls. The carnitas was juicy and worked really well with the pork broth. The whole bowl was well put together and I recommend adding some of their complimentary chili oil. Service: The service was excellent, from the moment we walked in and until we were out the door. Our server Charlie was kind and patient, while me and my partner worked our way through the menu. We ended our meal with two pieces of cheesecake which I highly recommend, I love cheesecake and this was a different take on one of my favorite deserts.
