Where to Stay and What to Eat in Tokyo's Most Popular Neighborhoods

"The main attraction is eel-focused dinner courses that showcase the wide-ranging appeal of eel beyond the usual grilled-over-rice format. Being next to Ginza’s Kabuki-za Theatre makes it easy to enjoy two Edo classics—kabuki and eel—together." - The MICHELIN Guide

"This restaurant was founded in Sugito, Saitama Prefecture, in 1873, at the dawn of the Meiji period. Charmed by the allure of Tokyo, Akihiro Takahashi, the fourth proprietor, fulfilled a dream by hanging out his shingle in Ginza. As his main store’s concept was to be an ‘eel kappo’ he serves soup dishes and decoratively arranged sashimi in the kaiseki style. Eel is freshly cut, steamed and grilled to achieve a tender texture, in the Kanto style. Dipping in egg yolks, à la sukiyaki, is one of his creative ideas." - Michelin Inspector

We wanted to try unagi while in Japan, and found this place. We walked in and without reservation on a weekend and were asked to wait for 15 minutes. The food was absolutely amazing! Mind blowing delicious! The fish was buttery and tender and paired beautifully with the sweet sauce soaked rice. The soup was eel liver, while it was for sure masterfully done, it might be an acquired taste. You also get a beautiful fresh egg yolk, crunchy refreshing pickles, and a whole knob of fresh wasabi to grate and enjoy with your fish! A wonderful experience! Highly highly recommended.

Eel was under my expectation because sauce was too light favor and it was not crispy at all

天然うなぎ We tried the うな重(Una-Ju) and 天然うなぎ(fresh eel) to compare the two taste. Fresh eel is the higher quality for reference. The place is quite interesting as you can watch the whole process of the eel being prepared through a big glass window. The eel is prepared in two styles and you can enjoy the different flavours.

I liked how the eel had no bones at all and there was a very generous amount of it. However, the eel itself was too soft and fluffy for my liking; it had the texture of parboiled eel more than grilled. The unagi sauce was very light as well. I bet there are people who enjoy the pure taste of grilled eel, but I am personally not a big fan.

Thoroughly enjoyed the eel here. The serving sizes are enormous and the atmosphere is simply sublime. Very quite with cute music and top tier food and service. 10/10!

Intimate and sophisticated setting. Food prepared with care with excellent quality ingredients. If you get seated at the counter, you can catch a glimpse of the eel getting gutted and grilled; I personally couldn’t watch the former🩸😅. However, it was inspiring to watch how much work and diligence is required to prepare such excellent eel! From the sides to the main, I felt like royalty, not to mention the warm service. I walked out ready for the weekend 🥰. I will definitely want to come back.

I have tried many unagi and this is the best one I have had. The restaurant incorporates a viewing window that shows you the cooking process which was unique. I ordered the live eel and the food was prepared in two ways, both were excellent. It cannot be more fresh than this and the eel simply melted in your mouth. Will come back again

Walked in at 3:15pm with other diners still inside and having their meal. However, was told that restaurant was closed. Perhaps the restaurant could consider updating their opening time? Might help customers understand their operation hours better.
