The Best Veggie Burgers in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"If natural wine and burger towers sound appealing, head to Unibar in Old Montreal. This collaboration between Tommy Cafe and Uniburger feels more like a speakeasy than a fast food joint but the burgers (including the veggie burger, made with Beyond Meat patties), which have been compared to In-N-Out Burger, speak for themselves."

Takenaka Uni Bar’s omakase is an excellent value at $185 for two. The portions are generous, the quality is solid, and compared to similar restaurants, it’s definitely worth it. The service is outstanding, making the overall experience very enjoyable. The downside was that they forgot the kids’ meal, since we had to give up our table for the next reservation, we ended up canceling it.

This was a “must try as much as I can eat” kind of place. Uni ramen with lobster, onigiri with spicy tuna, salad along with the fried oyster starter. The broth felt like I was eating smooth butter, with an uni taste… they put fish, pork belly, egg as well as the lobster tail in there so I was full walking out of this wonderful little spot. My wife had the straight up uni ramen bowl. Yes this was an expensive lunch but we were prepared for it.

Google
We had the omakase for two. Our server was very very kind, and the food was great. We were both very full by the end of it, which was a bit difficult because we were looking forward to the uni-don but felt like we were too full by that time. I found the uni mousse very intriguing. Would recommend for the whole experience.

If you’re looking for top-tier sushi with the freshest ingredients and impeccable service, TAKENAKA Uni Bar is the place to be. :) The quality of the seafood and sashimi are simply unparalleled. Their uni is some of the best I’ve ever had, and each dish is crafted with precision and care. Whether you’re a sushi connoisseur or just someone who appreciates high-quality Japanese cuisine, this spot is a must-visit. Beyond the food, the atmosphere is elegant yet inviting, making it perfect for both special occasions and casual indulgence. Me and my fiancé had a great dinner and thanks for everything. :)

The uni omakase is such a great value set. We got that set for two and added two dons and it was more than enough food. Everything tasted delicious!! Best oyster of my life.

This is my 2nd time here and I loved EVERYTHING. Everything from the flavours to the presentation and service was a solid 10/10. The seafood was super fresh and all their bowls are luxious with top notch toppings. 2 floors. My top 2 picks: - Japan Uni Bluefin Tuna Toro-Taku Sushi ($12/each): soo much flavour and texture jam-packed into this small bite. There are some finely diced crunchy (radish?) that goes so well with the creamy toro & uni. Kinda pricy for one piece, but I really enjoyed it. It also comes with a cute mini squeeze bottle syringe thing filled with soy sauce, but I didn't need it at all - it'd be too salty. - Yuzu Kosho Yellowtail Carpaccio ($19): I’m just a huge fan of Hamachi and always order it, so this was naturally a fave for me. The subtle yuzu sauce was so good and refreshing. Topped with crunchy aromatic garlic chips and some tobiko. Other dishes I tried: -Japan Uni and Beef Yuk-hoe ($15): Like a raw beef tartare with green onions, uni, quail egg. Mix together and eat with seaweed. Tad bit salty, but really good mix of ingredients. -Bluefin Tuna Toro Temaki Sushi ($7/ea): Seaweed hand roll - seaweed comes in a platic wrap so you have to unpackage and roll yourself. It's quite a fun tactile experience. Toro was amazing quality, but that's the only filling inside. -Coffee Float ($7.50): they use earnest ice cream! There's a lot of ice in the drink, so it dilutes the coffee quite fast. Pretty good for a light drink, but I'd pass if you want a strong coffee drink. -Spot Prawn Rice Bowl (limited): Not sure how long spot prawns are on the menu for, but this was amazing. Small spot prawns line the bowl, even under the leaf (I counted at least 30-40 prawns). Super sweet, not fishy at all. Lots of pay parking nearby ($2ish/hr) - I used PayByPhone app.

Google
The restaurant features an interesting lunch menu served until 4pm with various mini accompaniments and a great tapas menu. I opted for the chef’s lunch special sashimi as my main instead of their daily rotating specials. The sashimi was of incredibly high quality and delicious, almost didn’t need to add any optional items on the onigiri rice as both were perfectly flavoured on their own. The seafood tartar with egg selected for the onigiri was a bit bland, while cucumber was perfectly seasoned with a hint of wasabi. Not a huge fan of the soba noodle that was lacking flavour with a slimy consistency mixed with egg and gelatin. This meal may be perfect for those who are not salt-forward for a healthier take but I needed soy sauce to enhance all the dishes thus likely personal preference. It was a lovely surprise the staff offered free refills of the miso soup. Venue is very charming and the staff are exceptionally kind, welcoming and highly attentive to guests to deliver a great dining experience.

Google
Food: mix stars. Only uni-don is zero star. We ordered a course meal, and every dish included uni, which made us more and more excited from the very first course. The servers were all friendly yet professional in explaining the dishes. The atmosphere of the restaurant was casual; it didn’t feel particularly upscale (even though the prices were definitely high-end), but I thought it suited the area well. However, one very disappointing part was the final uni rice bowl before dessert — it had such a strong fishy smell that I couldn’t eat it. I ended up leaving about half of it, and all four of us couldn’t finish the uni. It was supposed to be a mix of Hokkaido and local uni, but we couldn’t tell which was which. We informed the staff, and while they apologized, that was all. I understand that handling uni can be tricky, but since they specialize in it, it was quite disappointing.

Yelp
Visited yesterday for a lunch with coworkers and we were all already planning our next visits (plural, yes) to Takenaka not even an hour after our meal. I was eyeing down the uni + real crab meat upgrade for the onigiri but was slightly disappointed about the lack of uni taste in the filling. On the other hand, the real crab was sweet and meaty so it made up for it. To be fair, I do think Takenakana amounts to way more than their humungous rice balls. I enjoyed the sashimi dish and the oyster+veg poached in broth very much. Matcha soba might come off a bit adventurous to some with its raw egg + grated yam, which lends it a slimy texture, but I'm a big fan of the combo. Fresh fish, hunky onigiris, tasty sides, super hospitable staff. 5/5 !!! They even prepared a panna cotta dessert + candle for our little celebration and took a polaroid photo for us. Uni ramen awaits, new ramen review coming in a few weeks My last words: Mousse de Uni, I'm not sure where the uni was but that dessert was the best bite if a bite ever bit.

Yelp
We were blown away by this restaurant during our trip to Vancouver. Customer service is excellent and we got the omakase course and was so full even before the course ended ! Its such a good deal for 2 ppl and you will actually leave full! My fiance is obsessed with uni so.. he couldnt stop raving abt this spot. It is located in a shady area so just keep ur eyes peeled of your surroundings and you should be good !

Yelp
I came here with a friend and we both loved everything we got. My friend is vegan and our server was knowledgeable about all the ingredients in each item. In the end there were several items my friend could choose from and she got a salad and 2 onigiris. I got 2 onigiris, the uni matcha soba and a miso soup. We both got drinks as well and by the end we were happily full. The drinks were great but I did find mine to be a bit on the sweeter side. The restaurant gave us a complimentary dessert as it was a birthday celebration. This was a nice surprise. I would definitely go back to try more items from their menu. The items I did try were excellent and honestly I'd be happy reordering the same items if I had to.

Yelp
I have known Takenaka since they offer variety of take out sushi plate at shared kitchen. Their Chirashi plate was so good and not sure how many times I ordered from there. They opened own restaurant while ago, finally I had a chance to visit here. What we ordered: Chicken Karaage Uni sauce - Portion was bigger than we expected. Uni sauce was very rich and flavorful. Karaage was crispy and juicy. Deep fried oyster - Very decent Deep fried oyster. I like Uni sauce on aside. Pork cheek -This dish was great, Pork cheek was so tender, juicy and delicious. There were radish on the top which matched with fatty pork cheek. Delicious. Uni and wagyu nigiri (ingredient from Japan) - Uni was very good, Wagyu was just ok, I expected a bit more tender. Torotaku sushi onigiri - Another great dish. Torotaku was chopped toro and Daikon radish mixed together and put on the top of Sushi rice onigiri. Very unique and flavorful. Luxury Deluxe sushi bowl - This dish was just ok. I feel a bit overpriced for these ingredients. but, Uni and Ikura were tasted great. Overall, I really enjoyed visiting Takenaka restaurant. Some dishes were hit and miss, but, Their sushi plate presentation was great and some dishes were stand out. I will visit for sure and we can enjoy here both small or large group.

Yelp
We shared: 1. Uni Comparison Bowl - uni from British Columbia AND Hokkaido, ikura, Paitan Ramen - chicken and pork chashu and broth 2. Uni Matcha Soba - uni, matcha, soba, Japanese yam, quail egg with dashi 3. Uni Chawanmushi - steamed egg custard, uni, ikura, shiso 4. Negitoro Bomb - chopped tuna, natto, okura, quail egg, takowasa, garlic chips, takuan, Japanese yam Starting with uni matcha soba and Negitoro Bomb. I really liked the flavor and texture of the whole soba dish. Flavor of Negitoro Bomb was complex and good but I personally couldn't enjoy the sliminess. Chawanmushi always comes in a small cup but you want a bigger cup of this comforting dish. I loved my uni comparison bowl and my friend his paitan Ramen. Service was good. Interior design is beautiful.

Yelp
Uni bar did not disappoint. All the uni was fresh, wagyu was amazing and the drinks were awesome. Great spot to meet up with friends, have some drinks and eat some great food.

Yelp
Amazing place with a HUGE menu and great service. Great atmosphere as well - a multi level kind of structure. They specialize in Uni and onigiri but they have lots of teishoku, sashimi, curries, some ramen, and lots of izakaya like items. The menu is literally multiple pages! It's not a sushi or sushi roll place though. The teishoku set I had was fantastic. The sashimi was great, really fresh and I loved the roe added to each piece. Loved the sockeye salmon too. The Uni soba was really well done - great presentation, the flavours blend together silky smooth. The other small dishes were on point too. Miso soup - most people don't care about the miso soup but the one they have here is fantastic. It's hearty and has daikons in it. It's above average. I also loved the onigiri. Very well done. Tried my wife's ramen. The soup flavour js rich and fantastic. I'm definitely coming back!!

Yelp
The food here is fantastic and the service is great. It's really cozy and warm when you enter. I ordered a LOT of stuff. The quail egg small bite is really nice and easy on the palette. Cant remember the full name, but it was hotate something (appetizer) basically like a scallop carpaccio, this was really good and super refreshing and light. Scallop was very fresh and clean flavor. I had a side of miso soup as well and that was a nice savory prep to the Uni Chawanmushi, which was really silky/smooth and such a buttery umami flavor. The sashimi platter was fantastic, everything was super fresh. Oysters were divine and the uni looked and tasted perfect. 10/10 would 1000% go back again. I celebrated my birthday (late) here and they even took our photo with a polaroid camera. Shoutout to all our servers and the chef, what a meal/experience.

Yelp
When we visit BC, we want something extraordinary (aka indulging dining experience). Takenaka is an establishment who delivers the great dining experience well beyond our expectations. We came here to celebrate son's 19th birthday. He was not a huge fan of uni (sea urchin) until we tried uni sashimi here. Fresh uni's sweet yet in-depth flavor... I regret we did not order a large one instead of a small plate! We ordered some other small plates such as hotate prosciutto carpaccio, Japanese omelet (with yuzu, daikon, and ikura), beef and uni nigiri, and uni and ikura temaki, along with well-crafted cocktails. We almost skip "shi-me" (closing dish - us Japanese often eat noodle or rice dish before call it a day), but decided to go with Yuzu clam ramen - it was astoundingly delicious! Seafood-salt base soup was very comforting. I was all impressed with this place - no dish or drink disappointing us. Staff was also excellent - they all seem very enthusiastic and are friendly, but not overly attentive. Since we returned to Seattle, I have been spreading the word about this place - this is one of the must-try restaurants when you are in Vancouver. My son is already asking me when we are going back (lol) - soon, I hope!

Yelp
Authentic Japanese food in Vancouver here's everything you need to know: This spot is actually a specialized uni bar that incorporates uni in such unique ways like in cocktails We tried a couple of their lunch sets, and the takeaway is: really amazing bang for your buck! What we ordered: Ramen + Onigiri Combo (yuzu clam ramen, uni onigiri, salad) Daily Special + Onigiri Combo (sashimi, spicy salmon onigiri, uni matcha soba, tamago roll, miso soup, salad) Kids Combo Uni Colada Kaminari This restaurant has the FRESHEST, melt-in-your-mouth sashimi I've ever had. They top the sashimi with a wasabi flavoured masago situation that aIters your brain chemistry The staff is so friendly, and the vibes really transport you to Japan. You would never guess but they have a hidden room for private parties of up to 30 people! I always can't wait until I get the chance to visit again They also run a more casual onigiri cafe Takenaka Uni Bar 52 Powell St Onigiri Cafe 1370 E Georgia St I would make reservations because this spot fills . . . . . If cafés, cocktails, and fun dates are your thing, follow me and I'll show you the best spots around Vancouver! Follow me at @yvrcafescene on instagram

Yelp
Probably one of the only spots in town to have uni incorporated into most dishes. You have an option to get Hokkaido Uni or BC Uni. Both in my opinion were good. They have a ton of options to satisfy your uni craving including the UNI ramen. ( I recommend it ) The service was great and the restaurant had an intimate ambiance to it. Plenty of parkades and street parking if you get lucky. It's worth a visit!

Yelp
We scored a last minute reservation on a Tue for lunch. It was a about a 20 mins walk from the Robson area thru Gastown to get here. The vibe here is casual, modern, and warm. Service was equally warm and friendly. For the two of us, we shared a lobster uni ramen lunch set that came with a side salad and onigiri, which we opted for the spam & egg upgrade. We also ordered the hotate sashimi, and the waygu uni sushi, which was recommended to us by our waitress; she seeme particularly passionate about the waygu uni sushi, so even though it's on the pricey sice (CAD$17 at time of writing of this review), we had to get it. And she was right! The waygu uni was delicious! ....well worth what we paid. The lobster uni ramen was very good as well; note that the lobster meet is cooked tempura-style and placed via a skewers on top of the ramen, similar to how shrimp tempura might be placed on top of a bowl of noodles. The amount of food we ordered was just right for the two of us. We enjoyed this delightful meal!

Yelp
We had an immaculate experience here from start to finish. The ambiance was very cozy with the lighting and the service was wonderful the entire time. For a party of three, we ordered the Takenaka Luxury Seafood Platter in the small size, Uni Toast for each of us, Japanese Curry Poutine, and Uni Wagyu Nigiri. I must say that the Uni Wagyu Nigiri was so delicious that we had to order seconds for all three of us. It just melted in your mouth....The Japanese Curry Poutine was also pretty good as well! As for the cocktails, I enjoyed the Uni Colada. The flavor was not too strong, and it was pretty enjoyable. I definitely tasted more mango in the foam than uni. The Takenaka Mojito was actually good too. However, I think that the house made Lychee Sake is a must try! Parking in Gastown can be a bit difficult, so we ended up parking in a parking structure that was a few minutes walking distance.

Yelp
It's the first uni bar in Vancouver. This location is upscale. The food tasted fresh & delicious. Loved the presentation. Great for date nights. I think it's a decent place to go for special occasions but not everyday as the price adds up. -Omakase set for 2 $168: 2 drinks, fresh sashimi platter, 3 chef selected appetizers, deluxe seafood bowl, miso soup & dessert -Uni Chawanmushi $12 -Uni Matcha Soba $6 -Lobster & Chips $28 -Lobster Uni Ramen $38 -DIY BBQ Wagyu Skirt $21 -Matcha Panna Cotta $8

Yelp
Food, service, and ambience were all amazing. I'd like to highlight the service especially. I had left the restaurant without realizing I had dropped my string bracelet on the ground. Our wonderful waiter chased me down two blocks to return my bracelet. I'll definitely be coming back next time I'm in Vancouver! Pictured is the small seafood platter.

Yelp
My favourite restaurant in Vancouver for a good reason, delicious food and lovely customer service. Their japanese lunch set is my go to order as it comes with a choice of onigiri, fresh sashimi, miso soup, salad, matcha soba noodles with uni & chefs feature dish. Their ambiance of the uni bar is dimly lit & perfect for a date! The ramen broth was creamy and delicious, definitely well made.

Yelp
Wow is all I can say for this place. I was here with a couple of friends for quick little bites before heading out to a night of shenanigans, and tbh, they really met quite a lot of expectation. I did a reservation online for 6 friends, and they were extremely accommodating and the staff were friendly when we arrived. My friends and I instantly ordered a bunch of drinks to start off the night with our light bites. And as we go over their special menu, everything looked like the perfect tapa style of food. Because it is Takenaka, everything was extremely seafood forward. And we lived in BC, it was such a privilege to have these types of items on the menu. I of course, got something uni related, but only wanted something small and light, so I order a simple Uni Tekmaki, which is an Uni Handroll, but in the Takenaka style. It was literally a 2 bite type of hand roll, and it came with a small injector of soy sauce. If you know me, I don't use much soy sauce, as I usually let the raw seafood do the talking on its own. I took the first bite with the biggest size of the uni and yum. It was to be honest good enough for a small bite I needed for the rest of the night as I already ate before going to Takenaka. Will be coming back with another group of friends, and checking out their lunch menu as it is different from their dinner!

Yelp
Everything about this place is spot on. Love that you can choose between local or imported uni--both are incredibly fresh and delicious. Great service and a nice, relaxing ambiance make it a fantastic dining experience.

Yelp
A day trip from Seattle to Vancouver lead us to this cute little place. Server was very friendly and helpful explaining the menu. We ordered the omakase set for 2 and a couple more items since we have 3 people. The food was good overall but we enjoyed the sashimi and uni more. Would have love to try the lunch combo set next time.
google avatar

Mr Q.

Yelp
Food: very good introduction to people who are looking to get into Uni/ sea urchins. Style of cuisine is mainly traditional Japanese izakaya, recommend to go with the imported Uni, rather than local, you will truly understand the craze over that delicacy Furthermore, the plating for the food is magnificent, very creative and photogenic Service: friendly staff, very informative and patient in introducing the food, it's either under staffed or because of the layout, some parts of the room might be overlooked, but take your time, enjoy the food, pair it with some beverage or a nice conversation Ambiance: interior design gives off a homey vibe, so very inviting for locals, breath of fresh air for people visiting to have a traditional environment with modern take on Japanese cuisines

Yelp
4.3 stars, the new Uni Bar Restaurant in Gastown! Almost everything on the menu contains Uni (Sea Urchin). Their main menu from Canada and a separate menu for Uni from Japan . We tried 2 pieces of the Wagyu with Japan Uni $32, was delicious, melted instantly. The sashimi luxury platter with oysters were very fresh, small $65. Little Uni Toast $26/ for 2, were slightly crispy with seafood and topped with Uni. Chicken livers $8 were just alright. Even the chicken Karrage $15 featured a creamy Uni sauce. Japanese curry poutine $13 was a popular hit for the kids, as well as salmon mayo onigiri $10 for 2 we got. Uni chawamushi $12 was the small steamed egg topped with tobiko and Uni, perfect balance, not overly sweet or salty, and was not overcooked. We also got Omakase aburi sushi, which had 8 pieces $29, variety of fish. Pork and chicken ramen $16, creamy and not too salty. Although the egg was slightly overcooked. The Uni and Seafood Chirashi Bowl was a decent size too, $35. Service was wonderful, our total for family of 4 was $280 ish after tax. We definitely ordered a lot for 4 people, but ate almost everything. We'll be back. However, it's not located in the best spot, as there are bums and trash all around, right next to Gastown. Be careful of parking too, we paid for parking but still got a parking ticket due to some restricted spots. We saw tow trucks towing cars away too.

Yelp
I tired their lunch menu, Daily Special + Onigiri Combo. They gave me two options for today's dish - deep fried something (I don't remember much) or sashimi. I went with sashimi obvs! And you can choose the filling for the onigiri if you like. I had natto filling. Everything was well presented and tasted delicious! Miso soup refill is free! My server lady explained about the menu very well in a friendly manner. I highly recommend this place for an authentic Japanese lunch or brunch and definitely come back again!

Jasper L.

Yelp
Food was excellent, though the presentation was almost too pretty and too Instagram-y. Wish they had larger portion sizes, because the food was absolutely delicious.

Yelp
Restaurant is cozy and I would recommend reserving. We got there right as they opened with our reservation and all the tables filled up fast. Ones that were not taken had a "reserved" signs on them. The seafood was super fresh and definitely their uni was much better than any of the others we have tried before. Most people order the seafood platter and the seafood bowl along with several other dishes. I also enjoyed their highball and the takenaka soda mocktail. I had never been to the onigiri location so I ordered few to try. It was good but I probably would not go to the other location to get some more. I just wish it wasn't in the area it is, pretty hard to find parking if you have to drive.

Yelp
first time here and had an amazing experience! we came for their omakase course and it was worth every dollar. you get two drinks--we chose lychee sake and yuzu orange lemonade. i normally don't like sake but i enjoyed theirs and would get it again. the fresh sashimi platter was so fresh--i was blown away. the service was great--our servicer consistently checked on us and food came out at a good pace.

Yelp
Everything here was amazing! We had the Uni Tekmaki, Uni soba appetizer, yellowtail hamachi, and sushi nigiri set. I would highly recommend all of these items. My son had the kids set which was made up of pork belly, onigiri, egg omelette, karaage, fried shrimp, miso soup, a calico drink, and a small chocolate treat. It came in a nice decorative boat which presented everything beautifully. I had a wonderful meal and would definitely come back.

Yelp
Found this restaurant on IG and drove from Seattle to try their uni! We got few different food from the menu: - Uni Comparison Bowl - Uni temaki - Uni ramen - Spicy salmon onigiri - Spicy tuna onigiri - Spam onigiri Absolutely loved the uni dishes! Uni was so fresh and delicious I wish I ordered more of that. Uni ramen was creamy and a bit sweet. My husband really liked the spicy salmon onigiri! We are definitely coming back soon for more uni

Yelp
Delicious ramen! Chicken Karaage was amazing. You wouldn't expect such amazing cuisine at this place. Need to stop in for food. Service was exceptional too!

Yelp
So excited for this new location and it lived up to the hype (mostly)! Let me warn you, it was hard to find the entrance because Google maps may lead you into the alleyway BEHIND the place, but it's on the main street with a tucked in sign, beside a hair salon! Spacious interior but not wheelchair/baby stroller friendly. The dining is located on 2 floors with the first floor being counter/ high top tables and second floor offering regular table seating. They have a two page menu and I was impressed with all the food we got. It was fresh and flavors were well balanced, the luxury deluxe seafood bowl ($48) was full of umami but also a bit underwhelming for the price. The avocado kinoko salad ($14) was refreshing and a nice starter to share. I enjoyed the uni matcha soba ($6) which was another refreshing bite but the noodles were a bit too soft after a few more bites. My favorite was the their Takenaka soda ($6) which was Earl Grey blue matcha with calpico. I was impressed I could taste all the flavors of the individual items and how wonderfully the flavors mingled together. Since I had a stroller, I had to leave it downstairs but the staff were very kind to help me bring it up to the first floor to keep it safe and helped us with the door and everything when we left. Exemplar service!

Yelp
Omg amazing food. The portions are small but it filled me up. The curry is huge. Service was very good, and the old building is interesting.

Yelp
Take - 2... ?!? Decided to give this new location a go since I was in the area and somewhat of a second chance. Yes I tried the other location a couple of times and was a bit disappointed. This new location took over the old location of Rodney's oyster in Gastown. If you been to Rodney's here in Gastown then it's easy to find, if not you might ended up circling around especially cause of the screw up construction that's happening in the area. The layout is pretty much the same as Rodney's before and that was more than half a decade ago since I last been here. When arrived, were greeted by the staffs and seated by the bar tables (yeah, not a fan of sitting on high chairs and tables by the bar area). Here were the food I ordered; 1. Takenada soda and a coke. Pretty basic 2. Uni wagyu nigiri. The wagyu was buttery and tender, nice harmony between the wagyu and uni with a touch of ikura to tingle the tastebuds. 3. Luxury Japanese omelette. It's okay, I personally think too much sauce, it kind of hijacked the distinct flavour of the omelette. 4. Uni temaki. Nice amount of each ingredient to fully taste them all blend together. Pretty good. 5. Uni egg roll. It was okay, I preferred the uni temaki more. 6. Takenaka luxury seafood platter (small). Everything was pretty fresh but I would prefer some of the sashimi as is rather than sprinkled them with tobiko or with a hint of seasoning. 7. Clam and mussels. The mussels were good size and the clams were fresh and sand free, that's good. Loved the fresh taste of the broth. A very tasty dish! 8. Lobster uni ramen. The chicken broth was slightly too thick creating that gooey feeling and texture in the mouth. Taste wise it was okay and the lobster tail was done nicely in tempura skewers. Overall, it's a cozy little place with a slightly different take than the Onigiri Cafe; It's more of a restaurant rather a cafeteria style atmosphere. The staffs were more attentive and engaging in this new location. Which I am more accustomed to (don't need to be reminded eating at the high school or uni cafeteria lol). As for the food wise, it's a level or two up compared to what I tried at the other location plus more selection here of course. I definitely like this location a lot more, therefore, TAKE-2 for me! 3.5 stars

Yelp
Came for a birthday and the 4 of us shared the uni tasting for 2 and a few other uni forward items. It was quite tasty but the portions are on the smaller side. Really unique items and worth a try if you are a seafood particularly an uni lover. Highlights were the uni chawamushi and the wagyu nigiri. Can't wait to see what seasonal items this place will introduce. Our server Diamond was fantastic. No cake fee which was a nice touch.

Yelp
We had a very bad experience at this restaurant, the sashimi and oysters had a very fishy taste. The uni was tasteless. The grilled fish was not tender at all and the seasoning on the fish is uneven distributed. Some place are very salty.

Yelp
Must eat place in Vancouver. More than uni dishes. Only place to offer my favorite combos of natto, okra and yamaimo (Japanese mountain yam). Do not miss the uni mousse, worth it. Vibes inside immaculate. Music playlist needs to be posted (ate there late afternoon Sunday). Servers are attentive and friendly. Online reservations easy to book. Located in Gastown, easy to find. Go!

Yelp
The idea of an uni bar was so enticing for my husband and me. We ordered omakase, and it was an overload of fresh and delicious uni in almost everything but the dishes themselves were lacking. The soba noodle appetizer was very claggy, sashimi and uni roll were unremarkable, a questionable-shaped filet of fried fish was tasty, uni chawanmushi was moderately good, uni comparison bowl (they only had 1 type of uni that day), and miso soup was very heavy (they added a lot of seaweed and layers of white onion and radish?). Dessert was an uni mousse that they actually forgot to serve to us. We waited 15 minutes for anyone to come check on us and just requested the check since our parking meter was running out. They admitted to forgetting to deliver dessert and gave it to us in a takeout box. We did try the mousse at home, and it was light with no hint of uni (not sure if it that was a blessing or a curse). The yuzu orange lemonade is delicious and refreshing; the tropical blue mocktail tasted like fruit loops cereal and was not very pleasant. Service was attentive in the beginning but teetered off. The oddest thing that stood out to us was the country music blaring which felt conflicting for a Japanese uni bar; we requested a change in music and the server said that it was their theme (???). They eventually did change it to jazz which felt a bit more appropriate but YMMV. I'm glad I tried but would not come back nor would I recommend this place.

Yelp
To date, my favorite type of bar is definitely an UNI bar. For all my die hard uni fans, check out Takenaka, just steps away from the heart of Gastown. The menu boasts a bunch of eats with uni including an omakase for two at a seemingly reasonable price (see menu photos) though we did not order it. We ordered a la carte including the uni colada (with the topping tasting a tad more mango than uni), uni toasts (mouthful of goodness), uni matcha soba (refreshing), and the large size luxury seafood platter (everything including the dozen oysters was so fresh!). As the new kid on the block (opened for only 2-3 months), I would return to try the other uni and non-uni dishes as well as their wide variety of onigiri. Must I add that the service was impeccable from the moment we opened the front door until we stepped out of the restaurant. Why is the rating short of perfection? Parking may be a tad inconvenient and it's about a 10-15 min walk from the Sky train stadium station and the portions seemed to be on the smaller end for the pricing.
