Xi’an Famous Foods - Review - Alexandria - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"Xi’an Famous Foods, the NYC spot made famous by Anthony Bourdain, is now in Alexandria via ghost kitchen, its first-ever location outside New York. It’s takeout and delivery only, but the hand-pulled noodles, cumin lamb burgers, and spicy dumplings are probably best enjoyed from the front seat of your car anyway. Bring napkins. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Omnia Saed

The Biggest D.C.-Area Restaurant Openings in June 2025 | Eater DC

"The cult New York chain known for hand-pulled noodles and spicy cumin lamb (and notable past attention from Anthony Bourdain) has entered the D.C. market via takeout and delivery from a ghost kitchen, offering its signature, bold Northwestern Chinese dishes without a traditional dining room." - Emily Venezky

An honest review from a longtime New Yorker who used to walk 10+ blocks every week just to get my Xi’an Famous Foods fix: the taste here is exactly as I remembered from the NYC locations, so that’s a big win. I highly recommend the spicy lamb hand-ripped noodles and the stewed pork burger. My favorite dish back in New York was the cold noodles, and while I didn’t realize this location’s version comes without noodles, no problem—I just cooked some at home and added them in. The sour hawberry tea was the perfect palate cleanser after the rich, spicy meal. This location is a bit far for us, and since there’s no dine-in option, the food had to sit through a long car ride - unfortunately the noodles got a bit soggy. But I was happy to read in other reviews that the ghost kitchen setup is temporary and that they’re opening full locations closer to my home. When that happens, I’ll definitely be back to my weekly visits.

Drove over for pick up(only option) on a Sunday afternoon around 2:30. Be aware the pickup location is behind the 7-Eleven. Parking is difficult and very tight when busy. There is no where close to sit and eat. Also when you ask for cutlery they don't include in your order they put it in a basket for you to grab. No napkins. Forks were grab and go and not wrapped separately. You walk in find your order in the website based on text and a locker opens with your food. Pretty straight forward interesting concept. We ordered 3 different dumplings. These were probably our favorite. Cucumber salad was very good. We also ordered 3 different kinds of noodles. Lamb, pork, and beef. All were good though we were hoping for more. One friend who goes often to New York mentioned the noodles weren't as good here. For us the food wasn't good enough to deal with the hassle of the location. If they moved though we would definitely give it another try or when we go to New York.

So glad Xi’an Famous Foods has finally made it to the DMV! I took my parents to their NYC location many years ago, driven by homesickness after weeks of traveling in the U.S. The chewy, hand ripped noodles instantly transported us back to northern China, where wheat noodles are widely loved and celebrated. They still remember that meal to this day. Fast forward to now, I ordered via DoorDash after doing some research. Since it’s a shared space with other vendors, there’s no dine in option, and the parking and pickup process can be a bit confusing, as others have mentioned. But nothing you can’t figure out. We ordered the lamb and pork noodles, cold gluten salad, pork dumplings, and pork burgers. We reheated the noodles after the car ride, which softened them slightly, but the flavor was exactly how I remembered - bold, savory, and spicy. The noodles were well ripped, with a wide, smooth surface. The gluten salad was tangy and refreshing, and the pork burgers were packed with juicy braised meat in firm bread. The dumplings are real surprise. I usually make dumplings at home and don’t often order them out, but Xi’an Famous Foods is an exception. Their spicy and sour pork dumplings are actually regional specialties and definitely worth trying. For drinks, I recommend the Sour Hawberry and Chrysanthemum Tea. The hawberry is fruity and refreshing, while the chrysanthemum is cooling and calming, both perfect to balance out the richness of the food. If you’re a first-timer, I highly recommend the lamb hand ripped noodles + spicy & sour pork dumplings + sour hawberry tea. Hope I can enjoy those perfectly chewy noodles fresh out of the pot soon! Will be on the lookout for their full service location.

Honestly, this seems better and cheaper than my visits to the NYC establishments. The ordering and pickup was also very tech infused. Scan your receipt - and the door to your cubby hole opens with the bag of your food.

I want to start off with how much i appreciate whoever is replying to all the reviews! I love your responses😭😊. They’re so detailed and they show how much this business wants to improve and satisfy customers! I think it’s so cool that Xi’an Famous Foods branched out to the dmv, so now I’ve been able to try it for the first time! I think it makes a lot of sense to start off at a location like a ghost kitchen just to see the demand and get a feel of things. And then later transition to a brick and mortar once it feels right. In terms of what I got – the spicy & tingly (i ordered least spicy though because i was scared it’d be too spicy lol) beef noodles – the meat was very tender and there was great portioning overall. I wish there was bit less fat on the meat (more of a preference thing though) and a little more flavor but that could have been due to the lack of spice. My food was definitely fresh and hot. Also, i heard it’s best to not wait too long to eat the noodles because the texture can change, so that’s what I did and I had no issues! All in all, the dish was still pretty good and left me full for a while. My order took 10 min and was ready faster than initially listed on Doordash which I was pleasantly surprised with! And I’m glad i ordered ahead because once it was ready, all i had to do was go inside, scan a qr code, and search for my order using my name. Honestly, I didn’t really care about the outside atmosphere of the place because it was a very quick trip from my car to the building and I didn’t come there for the exterior anyways. I came around 11:20am on a Sunday so parking wasn’t an issue for me. I think more parking and a less cramped interior would definitely be better for the entire ghost kitchen business, but I guess for now, I suggest not going at peak eating times. Overall, I had a very nice experience. And I hope the crowds aren’t too overwhelming. Keep up the great work!!!!!! I’d like to come again 😁😌🙌

First of all, it is not DoorDash Only, I don’t know why the title says that. You can order from the official Xi’an Famous food website or the Four Mile website. I have visited this restaurant many times before in NYC, including the flagship Flushing location. Happy this one opened in the DMV. The good: the burgers are on point, the cold noodles are yum. The bad: the flat wide noodles do not travel well. I had to drive 30 mins home after the pick up, and the chew in the noodles probably lasted maybe 3 mins after I started eating. The taste is good. They need to open a spot with seats so the noodles can be enjoyed immediately. I heard they are actively looking for a Maryland location with sit-down options. Can’t wait!

I’ve never written a review before, but as a former NYC resident who lives in DC now and loves XFF - I had to! I went during a weekday lunch hour and ordered on the Four Mile Co website as I got to the parking lot. I waited 15 minutes max. The parking lot is a bit chaotic, but everyone was patient and accommodating to those who were waiting longer for food. You get a text with a link when your food is ready, and a locker door opens with your hot food when you click the link. I know in NYC, they recommend you eat the noodles immediately because the texture can change if you let them sit in the sauce/oil. I got the spicy lamb hand ripped noodles and ate a few bites in my car while I waited for the traffic to settle. Delicious, amazing, just like they are in NYC! Ate the rest a few hours later when I got home, and they held up well! I was pleasantly surprised. Also don’t sleep on the sour hawberry hibiscus tea. It’s refreshing, fruity and tart. I really hope a storefront comes to the District!! 🙏🏽

We drove to Four Mile Food Co on Thursday morning. This is a ghost kitchen that brings together the kitchens of many restaurant brands. Please note there's no dine-in seating here; it's only for online order pickup or delivery through the restaurants' delivery platforms. This time, we specifically came from Maryland for Xi'an Famous Food, a place we've wanted to try for a long time. Xi'an Famous Food started taking orders at 11 AM, and we ordered: ⭐️[N1] Spicy Cumin Lamb Hand-Ripped Noodles (孜然羊肉乾扯麵) ⭐️ [N4] Stewed Pork Hand-Ripped Noodles (臘汁肉乾扯麵) ⭐️[N9] Pork "Zha Jiang" Hand-Ripped Noodles (炸醬麵) ⭐️ [B1] Stewed Pork Burger (臘汁肉白吉饃) ⭐️ [A5] Spicy Seitan Salad (涼皮) The order completion took around 25 minutes, and pickup was very convenient. All the food was well-packaged. As a Xi'an noodle enthusiast who has eaten a lot of Xi'an noodles in China and Singapore, I can confidently say that Xi'an Famous Food basically met all my expectations for Xi'an cuisine. The cumin lamb was fresh and flavorful, and the stewed pork was tender and juicy. The "白吉饃 bai ji mo" (burger bun) was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. After bringing it home, I reheated it in an air fryer using the steam-bake mode for 4 minutes, and it was still crispy and delicious. One small suggestion: the stewed pork in my Stewed Pork Hand-Ripped Noodles was almost entirely lean meat. The flavor would be even better if a proper amount of fatty meat (even slightly lean pork belly) were added. I hope to see more of your branches open in the DMV area in the future, and it would be even better if dine-in options were available.
