New San Diego Restaurants to Try in September | Eater San Diego

"Perched atop El Sueño, I found a rooftop, speakeasy-style sushi bar serving everything from traditional sushi to seafood crudo from Eric Steadman (Hane, Barbusa); the 1,100-square-foot space includes a 12-seat cocktail bar mixing drinks that feature tequila, Japanese whisky, and sake, while the ground-floor restaurant continues to serve a Mexican menu." - Candice Woo

Very sub par experience. We had a reservation, showed up and the table was empty but not set up so we had to wait while they laid everything out. Not a big deal but not ideal. We had to ask the waitress if we could start with drinks and apps. Everything came out hot and tasty. We waited way too long before we had to flag our waitress down and ask to order out meals. The vegan roll was good, everyone else seemed to enjoy this rolls. The waitress mentioned they can make any kind of classic roll (rainbow, avocado etc.) I told her we would probably be putting a few more in. She never came back….. after waiting forever we asked some rando working if we can just get the check. He brought it over. We never saw our waitress again. We didn’t order anything else. 4 of us shared a few apps. Each of us has 2 drinks and had 1 roll each and the bill was $400……………. That’s pretty steep especially considering we all left hungry. They have a few flashy drinks and some cool decore. I would not recommend. Service was so far below what I would expect from any bar In San Diego and it honestly ruined the experience. The food was fine, not worth the hype or the price. Will not be back

The fact that we got charged full price for a mocktail is wild. $21 for a drink without alcohol is absurd. The food was meh, and so was the atmosphere/decor. The tables are microscopic, and had no space to put our food. The plantain appetizer had great flavor, but would have been better with a piece of fried seaweed instead of the plantains, which had an awkward texture. The sushi was overpriced for what it was. I’d rather go to Sushi Deli, but we had fun and enjoyed the music. Definitely a one and done for me.

Tako Sushi - A New Hidden Gem in Old Town San Diego Tako Sushi is a fantastic new speakeasy that brings a fresh twist to Old Town San Diego. Despite being open for just a few weeks, this place already feels like a well-oiled machine. From the moment you walk in, the ambiance is perfect for a night out with friends or a cozy date. We started with the plantain appetizer, which was a delightful surprise—crispy, sweet, and perfectly seasoned. The highlight, though, was the Aguachile Roll. It was bursting with flavor, with just the right amount of heat and freshness. The specialty cocktails were another standout. They’re unique, creative, and truly elevate the dining experience. Whether you’re into something fruity or prefer a more classic twist, you won’t be disappointed. The decor was great and the DJ in the corner was playing some great tracks. We’re definitely coming back. For a new spot, they’ve really nailed it. If you’re in Old Town, make sure to check out Tako Sushi—you won’t regret it!

This place is delicious. Overall we loved the food and drinks and would definitely back. There is certainly a lot of competition for speakeasies and sushi in san diego and this place is right up there. Besides the great food and drinks, the service is great (our server, Julia, made multiple suggestions we loved and would not have tried otherwise), the decor is gorgeous, and there is parking which is a huge plus for old town. My favorite and most surprising was the crunchy plantains which were suggested by our server. Things that can improve would be table size, the two person table barely fits 2 dishes with the water glasses and personal plates and such, and the music is a little loud for conversing. Below is specifics about the food: Plantains - surprisingly good. Picked by our waiter. Not too crunchy, a little spice, nice and salty, so good! citrus yellowtail - bit of a miss for me. Ive had really good yellowtail crudo Beaches be crazy - really peachy, very fruity and refreshing. Like alcoholic peach juice. A little sake aftertaste. Halle berry - sweet refreshing, more subtle than the peach, very minty. Smooth, tastes like real, fresh ingredients Dragon tail - not very sweet, still fruity. I think dragonfruit is a bit subtler. Definitely has a sake aftertaste though. Firecracker roll - Very good - tastes like tempura shrimp which is delicious. Nice balance not too spicy Caballero - very unique, good, definitely not a classic Message in a bottle - very gin, very smooth, floral and fruity. Delicious but definitely strong. Goes down easy Toastada - very good, quite spicy, mostly when you get jalapeno in the bite. The fried onion is unique and actually went so well with it. And my favorite part is that its easy to bite, some tostada seem to fall apart or part of the topping comes out with a bite. Cookies and cream mochi - very good, nice little touch at the end. One piece of mochi each, perfect to end the meal and its a nice touch that its on the house.

Service was great, but the food is overpriced for what you're getting. The sashimi cuts were actually surprisingly good, but the rolls were hit or miss. Music was very loud so it's hard to chat with the people you're with.

Location: Tako is on the side of El Sueno in the valet parking lot. It’s not necessarily a speakeasy because it’s clearly marked with an orange neon octopus sign. Take the flight of stairs to the upper level. Parking: Street parking and nearby free lots. If that’s full, park at the trolley lot and walk 6mins over. Or pay $8 to valet in the El Sueno lot. Food: The food was amazing. The rolls had a Mexican flare by adding certain meats. -Ahi poke: Fresh. Perfectly pre seasoned. -Sueno roll: Yellow tail, spicy mayo and Serrano peppers had a nice kick. -XXX roll: Wagyu beef was seared on top, lobster, shrimp tempura. Tasted light and delicate from the truffle oil. -Nigiri set: This was chef’s choice and market price. Least favorite of all. -Crispy plantains: All time favorite! So much flavor in the deep fried caramelized plantains with spicy tuna and avocado. Shout out to Pietro for this comp dish! Service: Definitely needs improvement in this area. We did not get our water cup refilled at all. The gentleman who cleared out our plates came by more often than our server. We asked him to refill our water. We would have ordered another drink but we finished our food by the time our server came to check up on us so I just asked for the check. Highly recommend to make reservations on Open Table. Bar seating seems to be open but every table was taken. Overall, great food and night club kind of vibe with the deejay. The ambiance is really dark with a small lamp on the table. Food is 5/5 and service 3/5. Solid 4.

I got a late reservation expecting some quiet end of night drinks. I was wrong but so pleasantly surprised. We were seated right in front of the DJ, who played nothing but BANGERS. I spent most of my meal swaying and seat dancing to the music. We hadn’t planned to order food, but The sushi was so fresh and the flavor was amazing. We all ordered different drinks and they were refreshing and exactly to description. I loved the Honey Dew Me, and my husband got the Dragon Tales. I would order both again. I need to come back earlier In The night with some friends and order the huge sushi boat (I think it’s called the jungle cruise)!

Google
We had 2 cocktails 2 apps and 2 rolls for a fun girls night out decor was beautiful. while the tables are oddly small they timed our service perfectly so we were fine. Flavors are exactly what you’re hoping for when you think Japanese/Mexican fusion (2 of my favorite cuisines) loved everything we ordered the tostada and shishito peppers were delicious and we couldn’t decide which roll we liked more the Aguachile or the Caballero. Already plotting how we can come back! Drinks were cool as a cucumber and honey dew me, We both preferred the cucumber drink not saying we didn’t like the honey dew me just loved the cool as a cucumber after being poolside a few hours.

Yelp
This place was very beautiful and they had wonderful hospitality. We met Edgar and he was a lovely individual. We loved the food and the drinks here.

Yelp
Our group ordered the Jungle Cruise and it did not disappoint! It was fun to look at and we enjoyed everything we had on it! We were able to sit at the disco table which I thought was random and fun, looking around the room, the seating sections didn't all have the same feel so maybe look around the room and ask to be seated in an are that fits the vibe you're looking for. Came here on a Friday night and they had a DJ playing music! Servers were friendly and informative. Would come back again!

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. Party of 5, I believe she made a reservation. Located in old town. It's at the 2nd story of El Sueno. I think there's free parking on the street but it gets filled up quick. So we did the valet parking (forgot to check how much) but the crazy thing is, valet ended at like 830. Yet the restaurant is still open. I saw a parking lot of the other side of the building, which I'm not sure if that was also valet. Ambiance is very nice, very instagrammable. Starting from the stairs leading up to the restaurant. They had a live DJ playing good music. We had friendly customer service from Vito, he seemed knowledgeable of the menu and was able to give us his recommendations and they did not disappoint. We ordered: Miso soup Shishito peppers (they say 1 in 10 peppers are spicy) Yellow tail appetizer- we ordered this 3x Rolls: XXX- also a favorite but pricy pantera - ordered 2x Caballero Aguachile (this one too maybe like a mild kick as it has salsa verde) Sueno (has Serrano, so a little kick) Drinks: Slow dancing in a burning room (record this) Cool as a cucumber (a group favorite- very refreshing, light) They give u a slender pitcher of water for the table. I always appreciate when restaurants offer this, so I don't have to hunt down the waiter. I did have to ask for a cup of ice tho as I like chilled water. Birthday girl: they gave two ice cream mochi strawberry and chocolate and a lit sparkler. Would definitely come here again. Great for date night as well.

Yelp
My friends and I came here to celebrate my husband's birthday on a Sunday night. I thought this would be the perfect place for a sushi lover. The ambiance is very unique, love the Jungle theme, and there's a DJ. We were seated close to the DJ, but we were still able to talk and hear each other. Our waitress was nice and helped me out with a special request to surprise my husband with the Slow Dancing in a Burning Room drink. We also ordered several other drinks-- Halle Berry, Dirty Pop, and Dragon Tales. We liked all of them, but think the drinks were pretty weak. Aside from the drinks, the rolls were delicious. We ordered the Spicy Tuna, California, Caballero, and Pantera. The Spicy Tuna is definitely spicy. The waitress apologized for the kitchen being backed up and treated us to shots with a sparkler, which was really fun! Other notes- I will say it is pretty pricey and parking in Old Town is always a little tricky.

Yelp
This place has a nice presentation and ambience. Came in on a Saturday night and quite a few people were inside having dinner. Ordered a cocktail to start and it came out quickly. The bartender really puts together nice drinks. I wasn't excited when I saw the menu as it did not have great options for sushi rolls. I got a bluefin nigiri and a couple rolls. The nigiri was nice, but the rolls were not memorable. One of the rolls had wagyu beef and this one did disappoint. The service was really good and the decorations inside are great; after the food you feel like you were paying for the scenery.

Yelp
Fantastic food Service is also great. It's very clubby. Dress nice. Music loud and up beat Ambience dark red velvet seats FUN! we will come back.

Yelp
This has turned into my #1 fav sushi spot. My boyfriend and I have already gone here twice! If you don't like loud music during your meal- this place isn't for you. It's super vibey, great music, amazing food & even better drinks! We don't drink alcohol so we were able to get all the drinks from the menu NA/virgin style. The servers have been excellent every time! Super quick and timely service. The second time we went we were starving and were in and out of there in 45 minutes!l lol

Yelp
I was excited to finally try the viral sushi fusion restaurant. We made reservations for 10pm but arrived at 9 and managed to snag a table right away. The vibes of the restaurant were immaculate. It felt like being in tulum with the live dj playing and all the natural decor. Drinks were average, a bit sweet for both cocktails we tried and we didn't really get much attention from the server in regards to the drinks. The quality of the fish and rolls were also average. Nothing to rave about, especially when you are paying $24+ per roll. I could tell the rice texture was definitely leaning towards Mexican rice compared to Japanese, which is expected with a fusion. The service was fine, again nothing to excessively to rave about. Im glad I tried it though. For sure worth going once.

Yelp
We visited this restaurant on a IG recommendation. The ambiance was nice and cozy. It was a bit cool outside and they had the door open that brought in a breeze. We had a Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, along with several different sushi plates. The waiter was friendly.

Yelp
Their social media game is strong, 'cause we came here after watching an insta reel. Yeaaaah... this place is crap. It's got the vibes. But food was whatever (and pricey). Drinks were average -- pretty sweet and had that sweet artificial taste. Worst of all was the music volume. Wish I had earplugs, because my ears were buzzing when we left. That's a big no-no in my book for any sit-down dining establishment. If they posed themself as a club, then sure. But they serve food, and it was normal dining time (not some late-night snack). We couldn't hear each other, and why else would I come to dinner with friends but to chat and catch-up over a meal. In the end, we just ordered a round of drinks and a couple sushi rolls to share, then left swiftly to hit up another food spot in Convoy. Overall, not worth and won't come back.

Yelp
First time at Tako and was so excited to try the Japanese and Mexican fusion. Ambiance: good vibes all around, live dj and loud music, a little hard to hear your friends but good music! The aesthetic of the place was cute and dark. Food: we had some appetizers and sushi. Mediocre sushi, I won't be coming back for the food I was expecting better for place but I guess you're paying for the ambiance :) I got the dancing fire drink. I thoguht we would get the drink with the fire around it but we don't , the light it up for you and it sparks then the waiter gives you the drunk afterward. One of the servers bringing us the water cups did not have a great attitude seemed like he was having a bad day and taking it out on the other staff and customers. Overall cute spot to check out !

Yelp
The restaurant is absolutely cute, the drinks are not only really good but have an amazing presentation, the food is just okay and the service was great from the whole crew. The only issue is the music is way too loud, and it makes hard to have a conversation.

Yelp
Came for a bday dinner and I'd come back for drinks (not for food). Parking is TOUGH. There's a tiny lot around the building but it's very tight. So come early in case you need to look for street parking... the entrance is really cute and almost had a speakeasy feel. You go up the stairs into a jungle type theme with starry lights. Beware the restaurant is TINYY and the music is LOUD. There's disco lights on too so it felt like a dinner to club vibe. I ordered the dirty pop (MUST GET) and a chirashi bowl. The drink was so good! Almost like a passion fruit sherbet/pina colada. Chirashi bowl was good, nothing crazy and idk if I'd get for $23. The salmon was so buttery! But the ahi and yellowtail were just okay. Service was pretty good as well, our host checked on us periodically. I'd come back for drinks and I'd recommend making a Reservation just in case.

Yelp
Service Ambiance Food The best time!!! Loved walking up the beautiful staircase into the restaurant, was a great atmosphere at the disco ball table to celebrate our friend's birthday! The service was incredible but so was the food! So fresh and tasty!

Yelp
I wish it had said on Maps that it was inside/a part of El Sueno restaurants. When I was driving by it looking for parking, I didn't see it at first and wasn't quite sure where it was. The outside of the restaurant is simplistic, but has a fun neon sign. The stairs inside to go to the second floor is probably my favorite part of the restaurant itself because of its uniqueness. The dark tunnel with the jungle noises covered in leaves and floral and lights was very cool. The inside of the restaurant was fun as well, but not as unique. They have a drink that is wrapped in steel wool and I asked to change the drink from a Mezcal drink to a rum drink, but they couldn't do that which was a bummer. The rum drink was very cute and tasted almost like a smoothie, but with alcohol and it was very good. The tuna tiradito was plain, but had fresh fish. The purées were hardly noticeable, and I wish there was more flavor. The miso soup was the very first thing brought out even before our drinks which I thought was odd. But the soup had a great flavor to it. The Pantera roll had a bit of spice to it, but then the cream cheese was a nice add on and I thought it had great flavors all around. The service was friendly, but not very attentive as it took a bit longer to get our check. I would recommend checking this new spot out!

Yelp
Really nice jungle vibe bar and sushi restaurant right on top of El Sueno. This place has its on entrance so you need to enter from the small parking lot on the side, there's a door on the side and you just walk up the stairs all the way to the top. We went there for drinks and had a roll and small bite. Spicy tuna was good and the plantain was amazing! I got a virgin margarita, but had to tell them later that it was just too sweet. Even when they re-made it, it was still a bit too sweet. My partner got the dancing in a burning room drink and it was good. More on the smokey side so be aware. DJ was really good and played some good nostalgic 90s rap. Overall I would recommend and would go again for a hangout.

Yelp
Tako is a new sushi bar and speakeasy above El Sueño in Old Town. The entrance is located to the right and back of the ground floor Mexican restaurant. You walk up a dark staircase with neon lighting and arrive in an upstairs space that featured a 12-seat bar along the back of the room. The seating capacity was probably around 60 with mostly two and four-top tables. The place was about 1/4 full when I arrived. The interior decor was like a cross between rustic and a modern nightclub. Cocktails, Japanese whisky, and sake were the libations. Small bites, plates, rolls, and a la carte nigiri, sashimi, and hand rolls were the food offerings. The kitchen was out of sight and shared with the downstairs facility. I personally like to see the sushi chefs in action, but you couldn't do that here. For a business named after the Japanese word for octopus, there were limited items that used the mollusk as a protein. I think an opportunity was missed by not having a grilled octopus dish as a choice in the Plates section of the menu. The waitress recommended the Crispy Plantains for a small bite. Fried plantain chips were topped with spicy tuna, avocado, pickled fresno chili, spicy mayo, and eel sauce. The combination had a good flavor contrast with not too much heat from the chili. Fifteen dollars for three pieces was hefty though. I also picked the Nigiri Set that was a chef's daily selection of 12 pieces. The wait time for this order was quite long considering the low volume of customers and the simplicity of the preparation. When the set was brought to my table, it only had ten pieces of fish which I pointed out to the waitress. She apologized and returned to the kitchen to ask for two more pieces to be assembled. The six types of nigiri were Ikura, Tako, Sake, Hamachi, Maguro, and Ebi (brought separately afterward). The price was very inexpensive at $24 for the dozen nigiri. The quality was average compared to sushi I have eaten elsewhere. The service I received was great, however I think the kitchen needs to improve its efficiency and ensure mistakes are not made with the dishes.

Yelp
We recently heard about this new spot that opened in Old Town above El Sueño (same owner) and wanted to try it out. The entrance is along the right side, go up the stairs through the jungle. Tako has sort of a clubby vibe with loudish music but not so loud that I couldn't talk to my dinner date. We started with the plantains, interesting combination. And the Slow Dancing in a Burning Room (mezcal cocktail) is served on fire. Very cool and tasty! I also enjoyed the sashimi platter. Pricing was also pretty reasonable and not overinflated. This place is new and our server was new, so I won't critique that too much but it could have been a little quicker (we waited a while for the check) and also the table next to us was so close that once seated the server and busser could no longer reach our table and had to hand the plates from a far. Overall I'd say definitely go check them out.
google avatar

Sayonara T.

Yelp
Sushi fusion...YES, PLEASE!! Walking up to the space is the best part. It's like you're walking into the jungle. The music is fun and lively, and you are greeted at the front by the most sweetest hostess. The menu is not big, which, to me, is great because you know the item they do have will be out of this world. We started with the crispy plantains, which we were told is the house favorite. The flavor was great, and the plantains were cooked just right! We had two drinks, the beaches be crazy and the Yuzu drunk both were great! For the rolls, we had the XXX and the aguachiles roll. Let me tell you, I have never had a till like the XXX, the beef and lobster all in one!? Amazing! The aguachiles roll took me back, same flavor as the aguachiles my dad makes. We ended the night with complimentary dessert, mochi. The staff was attentive and made sure to check in with us often. Overall, great food, great service, and great experience... a must try for sure!

I want to come back and try the food. The music was great not to loud great music selection. Thank you Don Prieto for taking the time to talk to us while we were there, you have a humble hospitality. We also want to say thank you to Dre are drinks were . A must try spot! We will definitely be back!

Yelp
visited this location last night to celebrate my sister's birthday (January 28th), and I accidentally left my purse behind. We went back for it 20 minutes later and all of my cash had been stolen from my purse. I know I shouldnt have left my purse behind, but I would hope that the location would have common decency and integrity to respect other's belongings. We will not be returning to this location. It was very disappointing .

Yelp
We walking around Old Town and remembered the new restaurant/bar. Showed up before they go busy and we're able to find a spot in the bar area (no reservations needed). Only came for drinks, but next time I'm making an appointment to try some of the food. The bar aesthetic set up the expectations for the drinks. We ordered different drinks and EACH ONE WAS GOOD! it feels like you can't go wrong with a drink. I say this bc I can't remember which drinks we ordered lol. Definitely coming back for food and a cocktail they light on fire that just simmers off.
google avatar

Heather D.

Yelp
The ambiance was perfect with the DJ playing music, the lights walking up to the entrance, and the presentation of the cocktails. Our favorite sushi rolls were the Sueno and the Pantera roll. The taste of the lime on the spicy edamame was also unique. For cocktails, Slow Dancing in a Burning Room is a must!
google avatar

Ellie R.

Yelp
The drinks are absolutely delicious! I got the dirty pop and the burning in a room (forgot the actual title). The drinks are so creative and cute. Food wise we got the spicy garlic edamame which was delicious and the salmon and yellowtail belly. Salmon was ok, yellowtail was AMAZING. The ambiance is very cute, very jungle themed with a disco ball. My only complaint is the music is so loud I can't hear myself think. I couldn't hear my date talk, we had to shout over the table. Not sure what exactly the theme of the music was supposed to be but I got over the same 80s songs being blasted pretty quickly. Service was very friendly. I would come back if the music was turned down 60%.
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
Do not recommend. The food is subpar, fish not fresh. Staff was so so. The atmosphere is very loud and busy. Parking is a nightmare (I don't hold that against them, but just notating). The only thing good about this place is the instagram shot.

Nayyirah F.

Yelp
Booked a reservation for our anniversary dinner and the staff made sure we were well taken care of. They were checking on us frequently, making sure food was alright and we had drinks. We both ordered the chirashi bowl and that was good, the fish was fresh. We got the shishito peppers and a spicy salmon roll as well. The roll wasn't too spicy. I ordered the beaches be crazy drink and that was yummy. The music was a little loud so you had to talk a bit louder and the tables felt small for the plates and drinks. Overall they have a really cool vibe!

Yelp
The ambiance is great and drinks are delicious. They have a live dj so music is a bit loud but I enjoyed it. The sushi is OKAY nothing special.. Service was 10/10. Worth a try but nothing to rave about.

Yelp
Tako is such an amazing addition to Old Town San Diego. Tako effectively combines Japanese and Mexican cuisine so effortlessly. The service was top notch and the ambiance is such a fun experience. I would love to see this space host dance events as it is truly a unique special space. What we had: TUKA TIRADITO Blackened Ahi, Corn, Cilantro, Spicy Mayo, Avocado, Cucumber Puree. SUENO Imitation Krab, Shrimp Tempura, Avocado, Yellowtail, Spicy Mayo, eel Sauce, Serrano. XXX Imitation Krab. Tempura Shrimp, Avocado, Cucumber, Wagyu Beef, Lobster, Shallots, White Truffle. SLOW DANCING IN A BURNING ROOM Dos Hombres Mezcal, Ancho Reyes. Blood Orange, Lime, Agave. Mint. Orange Bitters. SHE'S FIREWORKS ON THE FIFTH Suntori Toki, Lemon. Ginger Syrup. Yuzu Puree, Agave, Ginger Beer.

Yelp
Located above El Sueno in Old Town, take the stairs up a mesmerizing hallway that takes you to the Mexican Jungle, full of fun lights and decor to the entrance of Tako, a new a new vibrant Japanese/ Mexican fusion sushi restaurant. We had an unforgettable experience with top notch extravagant cocktails, the freshest fish & ingredients available, and unmatched atmosphere accompanied by a giant disco ball Food we tried the Crispy Plantains that were packed full of flavor and probably my favorite thing we had, yellow tail sashimi, and a variety of rolls that included: Sueno, Aguachile, Spicy Salmon, Pantera & Spicy Tuna Drinks we tried the show stopping Dancing in a Burning Room a mezcal drink that came out on fire , Dirty Pop a sweet rum drink with a smoke bubble , Halle Berry with fresh berries on top , Message in a Bottle a gin drink with a cute bottle you pour more into your glass everyone who worked there were so nice and friendly! One of the bar tenders even had the same name as me! Everything tasted and looked amazing! I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. Had all the makings of what you would expect out of the top-tier restaurant. Sushi with decorative theming and speakeasy vibe. Unfortunately, that was completely ruined by the obnoxiously loud DJ. Coupled with the fact that it was next to impossible to see the menu, if you didn't have a phone flashlight out, you could not read it due to the lack of lighting. as mentioned before there was a DJ, making it very difficult to actually hear what anyone was saying let alone convey, which wanted to order. In terms of food, I'm fully aware I can be somewhat snobbish when it comes to sushi. However I'm a say for one of the key components of sushi is rice....an it rice was literally crunchy. It's as if the kitchen left if it out overnight and reuse it. I could say the quality was equal to that of the fish as well. The lackluster appearance of the fish coupled with the slight sourness that I tasted with the sashimi and nigiri made me question If the people prepping the food were taking proper care. I wanted to notify my server, but the evening was ruined at that point and we just wanted to leave. Needless to say the following morning, my date and I both had a lot of stomach issues. I really want this place to succeed, most likely it will. But if you're going here for food or for any type of verbal conversation... Go elsewhere. The highlight of the entire evening were the cocktails, and even though I could not hear the servers, they were very attentive. I think this place is better suited as a club rather than a restaurant.

Yelp
NEW - speakeasy sushi restaurant in old town San Diego Dramatic Drinks, delicious sushi and vibrant atmosphere is what describes this place. Located right above El Sueno in Old Town, my favorite was walking up the secret door through the steps that reminded me of being in a jungle.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our dinner here! While it is pricey, the drinks and food were all good and the service was great! I didn't have much expectations for their sushi, but the fish cuts were thick and melted in your mouth. Cute spot!

Yelp
Great food and drinks, we couldn't RSVP but we went right when they open and sat at the bar. Food and ambience was really nice.

Yelp
The service was A+, the food was delicious, the price was higher than normal (but was expected), and the only thing that truly annoyed me was the incense. Please do not light incense while people are eating...it does not add to the ambience and took away from our meal as a whole. Trying to eat my sushi with such a harsh smell was a bit bizarre.

Yelp
Fantastic experience on a Saturday evening. We did not score a reservation prior to our visit (they were booked up), so we risked going in and snagging a table or a bar seat. We ended up at the bar after a short wait (it's first come first serve) - and that just started off the great evening. First of all, we were served by Dre for the majority of the evening, and he was efficient, friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. Really made our experience great. We tried a number of the signature cocktails from mezcal to gin to tequila to sake - and not one single drink disappointed. We really wanted to taste that menu! Not to mention the presentation of the drinks made it an experience. Then...the food. We started with the yellow tail tuna- very fresh & light with a blood orange sauce...moving on to the plantain dish (the reason I will return!!) which was perfectly balanced with every bite, and finished with their Tostada dish. Everything was truly great & tasty! The only partial negative was that a couple of the dishes took a looong time to come out to us, maybe because the kitchen was backed up & busy - not sure...but the restaurant recognized the error & made it up to us. No excuses, just solution. The environment was sexy, dark, with a DJ who played awesome music throughout the whole 4 hours we dined & drank. This is a must go.

Yelp
We celebrated a birthday dinner at Tako during opening week and also visited again for dinner. For being a new restaurant, the food and service was not compromised as I've encountered with some opening weekends. When we arrived, the stairs leading up to the restaurant set the tone and ambiance and it's all good vibes with the DJ playing tunes. We sat at the bar each visit and had the pleasure of Deondre aka Dre serving us drinks and food. He's such a genuine person, very attentive and overall has a great personality which made us want to return and sit at the bar again. All the cocktails we ordered were delicious. We loved the Dirty Pop, Yuz Talking To Me and Cool As A Cucumber. Their sushi is fresh, beautifully presented and tasted just as good as it looks. We had the Nigiri Set, Sueno Roll, Pantera Roll along with a few ala-cart nigiri and hand rolls. Everything was outstanding. They offer reservations on Opentable which is recommended but it's nice to be able to walk in and sit at the bar. We will definitely be back soon and thank you to Dre for always bringing the good energy and providing exceptional service!

Yelp
I must admit it's been a while since I've been to Tako but the last time I ate there it was so wonderful! The sushi was great! I'm going to go try it again soon because honestly I forgot about it. The service was also very good and the presentation of the sushi was beautiful, so I'm really going to try this place again... Thanks for reminding me.

Yelp
A 10/10 would-visit-again sushi spot with delicious ig-worthy cocktails. It's Mexican-Japanese fusion, and it gives speakeasy party in the Mexican jungle kinda vibes. I enjoyed the Crispy Plantains which was a fun play on crispy rice. The Caballero roll was unique and showcased the fusion with al pastor ahi tuna and pineapple. The star for me was the XXX, a premium roll with wagyu beef, lobster and white truffle. My mouth craves it :') The big show stopper drink was Slow Dancing in a Burning Room- surprise! there's fire involved lol. It's great for Mezcal lovers with chile liquor and blood orange. Message in a Bottle is a light and bright gin drink with a fun presentation. Dirty Pop is dangerous and delicious, a sweet tropical drink with a bubble of your own to pop. Honey Dew Me was perfectly honeydewy with a floral aftertaste. Service was great, we were checked on often, and we were given a lot of good recommendations. There's a live DJ who keeps the energy UP! Don't expect it to be a quiet spot for deep conversations. Overall- loved everything and I'd go back fo sho.

Yelp
If you love sushi, this place should be on your list to try. It's pretty new but frkn OUTSTANDING experience. Big-time party vibe w/ pumpin music and disco ball lights. My hubs found this place and we came to check it out from Escondido. Did. Not. Disappoint. The drinks were DELIIIISSHHH!!! The spicy edamame was so so good. The tostados were seriously amazing. I would order 2xs next time!!! Our rolls were phenomenal!!! Try the AugaChille (droll worthy!!!) and the Caballero were spectacular. Our waitress, Juliette was the best, and all the staff were on point, friendly, fast and accommodating. Everything was the best. I would come back for a bday FO SHO.

Yelp
I can honestly say that I don't have any complaints. From start to finish, the experience was amazing! The hostess was very nice and welcoming, we were unable to make a reservation so we came as walk-ins and the hostess let us know we could wait at the bar while she found a table for us. Both of the bartenders were very polite and actually listened to customers. Once we had our table, our server was prompt and accommodating. We ended up ordering a little more than our table could handle and I accidentally knocked off my water glass when grabbing some sushi. A gentleman named Edgar came to clean up my mess and he was SO sweet. I couldn't thank him enough, I tried to offer him a tip and he wouldn't take it! That man is amazing, he definitely keeps that place running behind the scenes. And that's all just the service! The vibes were on! The dj actually played good music, the food was to die for! The xxx roll was freaking amazing! I can honestly say that, to me, it was a 5 star experience. Already recommending this place and definitely will be back! Thank you to the whole staff, you guys work hard.

Yelp
Saw that a new sushi place opened up in old town and had to try it out. This place has its own private parking lot it shares with the restaurant downstairs. Walking in you climb some stairs that are decorated like a jungle with music playing. Walking in you you hear the music and see a cozy dining area with a DJ booth set up along the wall and the bar to the left and up. Since there are limited table I would recommend getting reservations or be prepared to wait for an hour or sit at the bar. Sitting down the seats are a little weird in that they are stool height that have adjustment for height but 2/4 chairs at our table adjustment was broken. So you may need to do some musical chairs to have everyone sitting comfortably at the table. We started our order with some drinks and sashito peppers. The cocktails are well made and flavorful. I had a Suntory Japanese whiskey and it was a decent pour. They only serve cold sake but they have a good selection of them. The sashito peppers were flavorful but it came garnished with a lime, but when I squeezed the lime absolutely no juice came out so not sure if was just garnish or was it supposed to be used in the dish. For the main course we shared the ahi poke bowl, spicy tuna roll, the spicy salmon roll, tuna belly nigiri and Sueño roll. All dishes came out relatively quickly. The poke had a lot of tuna and salmon slices and tasted fresh and had a good citrus soy sauce flavor. The spicy tuna roll was ok as well as the salmon roll. We chose those rolls since they were the only ones that didn't contain the imitation krab. I hate that in my sushi rolls and avoid it at all cost. The tuna belly nigiri was excellent, tender and fresh. Service was attentive and the waitress was always checking in. Although I did have to ask for ramekins and soy sauce once we received our dishes. Overall a good sushi spot if you're in the mood for quality drinks and some music. The sushi roll options needs some improvement but if you're in a group order the jungle cruise the table beside us got it and it looked like a good deal with a good selection of sushi.

Yelp
My bf and I came here for our 3 year anniversary back in October. We had an eventful evening and I showed up to our reservation alone while my bf had to run to our home across town. My boyfriend made the reservation under my name, so they must have thought I was dining alone. They didn't give me an ounce of attention. I had to flag someone down to take my drink order. They just ignored me the entire time I was by myself. Let me go back some tho... You walk up the stairs and it's Rainforest Cafe vibes. Cheap jungle decor. I thought it was kind of cute at first, but it hardly goes with any of the rest of the decor. Which is cheap influencer vibes when you're in the actual restaurant. Not fancy. Just kind of tired tacky tiki vibes. The music was SO loud I couldn't even hear myself think. Our reservation was later in the evening maybe 8pm, or close to that. I guess they want it to feel like a club even on a Tuesday. When my boyfriend arrived at the restaurant their whole attitudes changed. All of a sudden they care about the service they're giving me. Except not really because they STILL took forever to come take even our drink orders so much that a busser tried to take our menus away as if we were done. We were like uhhh we haven't even ordered yet. Finally order and the food is actually good. It's not spectacular. Could have this level of decent sushi anywhere. Menu is small. Definitely fusion. We had several cocktails and ordered a bottle of sake that was absolutely disgusting - like drinking straight honey. No way to know tho as no descriptions on sake menu and waitress couldn't be bothered to actually inform. We ordered a lot of food and the more that we ordered, the better they seemed to treat us. Which was extremely disappointing. We spent about $400 and both agreed we will probably not be coming back here ever. Not because of the food - because of the service, the super loud music and the ambiance. We couldn't hear each other and we were sitting just 1 ft across from each other. We were excited to try this place because we love Azuki and we heard they are connected. But we won't be coming back here.

Yelp
Just meh, sushi was just ok, the drinks were really good and the decor is pretty cool. Other than that not too memorable, wouldn't go back.

Yelp
Our party of 4 ordered the jungle cruise. It was enough to feed us all without feeling overly full. I unfortunately took no pictures but it was a beautiful display. The rolls were all very good and though they told us which ones we were served, none of us remembered what the told us lol. I do know we got the caballero roll because that one had pineapple in it and I was pleasantly surprised that I liked it. I don't usually like fruit in my entrees. Overall everything was enjoyable. We also had cocktails which were fun. I can't remember the name of mine, but they lit it on fire. Highly recommend as a date night spot for those who like ambience and sushi.

Yelp
Such an amazing and fun experience to enjoy sushi. Fun atmosphere, menu full of new options, and good drinks. The service was great and the server gave great recommendations which turned out to be spot on. We would definitely return next time we are in San Diego.

Yelp
We went to Tako last night and we were mainly there to try the food and the drinks that we had heard about. The service by Juliett and the rest of the staff was AMAZING! We were taken care of, from then on what turned into an amazing dinner with girl friends turned into a fun night out with amazing ambiance. The DJ was playing our jams! Signing, dancing, food, drinks and a good time what more could we ask for!? We spent the rest of our night there and it was great! I would definitely go again to enjoy all of the above. So thank you Tako for taking care of us! I'll be back! Wish I had more pictures but that's when I know I have enjoyed a night.
