Takumi Sushi Owana

"Kenji Oana and his fellow artisans work with practiced synchrony, alternating servings of nigiri and drinking snacks. Rice is seasoned with either red or white vinegar; sushi of tuna and pickled daikon radish is shaped like o-hagi (rice cakes coated with sweet red bean paste), a legacy inherited from his mentor along with the shop’s name. Snacks are delightfully inventive: baked and steeped barracuda and eggplant, for example, or conger eel grilled with Saikyo miso. Never knowing what to expect accentuates the fun." - Michelin Inspector

Takumi Sushi Owana was a very enjoyable Omakase experience. 18 courses of very delicious and unique bites, but a few caveats. For starters we had booked the Omakase expecting to be in front of the chef and the sushi, however, in our reservation we had selected without knowing “any seating“ which, in fact meant that we were in a small room alone off to the side. This is obviously not what one expects when they go to an Omakase and was pretty disappointing. However, the staff was incredibly nice and Chef did come into the room a few times to bring the dishes and explain. A few highlights were the Chu-Toro and the marinated Akame, in addition to a Hokkaido scallop and local black throat Seabass. We also had a few very interesting bites including blowfish sperm sack, miso brain, scallop liver. Some of which were good, but all of which were the type of thing you would want from a Japanese Omakase in Tokyo, some really unique and once in a lifetime bites. For 18 courses and the service (minus the seating), I would say it was worth the price. Overall, worth going but possibly an example of why a high level Omakase is not necessary while visiting Tokyo. I’ve done many Omakase and this was a good one, but have had better stateside and have had some really good sushi and other more simple places while visiting Tokyo.

Excellent sushi and cost performance. Chef is friendly to everyone. You won’t get banished to the gaijin corner like at Udatsu. Good pace for lunch. In and out in an hour.

Our first omakase experience in Japan and it was quite lovely. Nice selection of dishes and the chef was pretty chill.

Not bad, with some stand out dishes. A few misses but more hits. Service was impeccable. Their specialty is in edomae style sushi (aged/marinated fish, and generally more inventive/modern). My guests felt that the overall flavour profile was too salty. If you're expecting plain fish sushi, this may not be the right place for you. We took the train here and followed the route according to Google maps. Caution: it is up a DAMN STEEP HILL. I know it's not the fault of the restaurant and am not accounting this in my review but adding as an FYI.

I’ve visited this place 3 years in a row (and is now kind of like a ritual when I visit Tokyo) I think it speaks to how much I love dining here! Very authentic sushi experience in a small restaurant up a little hill in Ebisu that’s always packed with locals/regulars. The owner and chefs all speak some English and try to introduce to the foreign customers the different types of fish they serve and are all super friendly. The ingredients used vary depending on season which makes the experience so much fun. Highlights for me from last night’s dinner were the chu toro, scallop, sawara, uni cone, a karasumi mochi wrap (!), crab over rice, and a temaki with some white fish that I’m having trouble recalling. I’ve never had sawara before and it was smoked to perfection before being made into a nigiri and leaves your palate with that creamy buttery taste balanced out with a delicate smokiness, I love karasumi but have never paired it with mochi and that combo is so good!🤤 They also have a great selection of sakes to pair with the food so definitely ask the chefs to recommend for you! I can’t wait to come back soon!

Everyone is courteous and we liked that the servers asked if we're familiar with the type of fish being served. The whole sit-down experience was roughly 2 hours and 45 mins. We were so full from all the delicious food.

Pretty disappointing visit for the price. The fish quality was good, but the rice was cold and didn’t stick together very well. We had the private room and it felt very small, to the point where the waitress couldn’t go around to fill water or grab plates so we had to keep passing everything to the front of the table. I felt like the presentation was kind of lazy on some of courses and it didn’t feel worth the price at all. The staff were very friendly though. It just didn’t feel like a meal worth that much money.

I was a bit apprehensive after reading some of the more negative reviews (re: Small rooms, fishy taste) but alas as some have stated it is subjective to one's palate. However note, this is an authentic Japanese omakase and it was very different from the omakase and sushi I've had from Western countries etc. They service sushi attuned to local taste with some flair and innovation. So if you're not open minded I wouldn't book. BUT they were extremely attentive and accommodating. I booked via pocket concierge and noted my partner did not eat oysters, as they knew in advance they substituted one dish for a simmered tuna which he loved. The sushi they served tonight (Winter Jan) was mainly centred on white fish such as mackerel and sardine. These fish do tend to have a stronger sea flavour but you realise fresh mackerel tastes smooth and sweet! Everything was genuinely delicious and some surprised us (Shirako was like a smooth egg custard !). The service by staff and chefs was excellent, professional, smooth and yet not pretentious. It's a small venue which makes for an intimate setting. They kept refilling our tea without asking and we finished the night with delicious icecream. You leave VERY full and satisfied. The staff know enough English to tell you which fish is being served. :) I highly recommend this place. Thank you for such a wonderful night. ありがとう
