‘No Seed Oil’ Restaurants Seize the Moment | Eater

"A Venice, California eatery whose branding around avoiding seed oils drives customer demand—co-founder Graham Honig reports roughly 90 percent of guests seek them out for the use of beef tallow—and pairs that messaging with other promises like avoiding nonstick pans and plastic cutting boards. The brand has leaned into bold slogans and merch, taken MAHA-adjacent investment, and presents the stance as an apolitical commitment to offering healthier-feeling options." - Jaya Saxena

Google
The Colony is a super cool way to order food from different restaurants in one place. We had Talo Organic and it was 🔥🔥very fresh ingredients, organic and grass fed beef! It's a must try if you're in the area. Table seating is limited as it's not your ordinary style restaurant.

Ryan Z.

Google
I love this place. Been coming to Talo every week since their soft opening. Their food tastes great and is great for you too. They don’t cheap out on the portions either. Graham and the team are awesome too

Matthew W.

Google
Was worth the hype! Been looking for a clean restaurant like this for years. Everything was great and the portions were huge. Fries were super crispy, tacos stuffed with meat and the salad was solid.

AngelinaVash

Google
Listen, I love the concept of this restaurant and I knew of this place when they first opened in Sacramento. But unfortunately the tacos did not have much taste to it, quite bland. Most of the fries were WAY too fried and dry. The rice bowl was good though. We spent about $80 dollars for 6 tacos and a bowl which did not feel worth it. The tacos definitely need improvement.

Google
I’m not sure what to say.. I went here specifically for the fries and all they serve now are potato wedges. I paid nearly $7 for 5 potato wedges.. outrageous. AND THEY STILL LABEL THEM AS FRIES ON THE MENU! I went here specifically for the thin cut fries they advertise on their Instagram and that all the Google Maps pics show, but I didn’t find out until after i ordered when I asked and the staff said they don’t make them anymore! Such a major let down. Those potato wedges are horrible. Bring back the fries I would love to taste them! I ordered the Latin influenced bowl, it was good, but portions are smaller than Europe. I do agree the steak and chicken meat are high quality, so are the other ingredients, but the prices definitely reflect that, the portions don’t. I’m divided whether I would return or not, those thin cut fries might make me change my mind… Didn’t realize this was nestled in The Colony, good addition to the spot however confusing how you can order from The Colony computer terminals, or you can go to Talo’s staff who has a register setup on the other side.

Google
Got the Cabo fries and they were amazing. My only thing is they’re so overpriced. I paid $30 for this +guac and water 😬. However that doesn’t stop me from saying how tasty they were. There was a couple of bites where I thought a lot of flavors was going on but overall very good id recommend you try them 😁

Nikolina

Google
Really yummy organic healthy food. The portions are a great size and super filling. We ordered the fries and got wedges instead but I still liked them a lot.

Google
It has changed quite a bit from a few months ago to now. I recently went there yesterday and noticed they do not have workers to take orders anymore. You have to place your order via kiosk which to me is an impersonal approach to a good service restaurant. I ordered 2 fries and it was heavily soaked with oil and very soggy . On one of the fries they threw the tzatziki sauce into the fries and it spilled all over the fries. The plastic lid seemed deformed due to the heat of some sort. My fiancée and I were quite disappointed. We both decided that we will not go back to Talo Organics any longer. It has become some what of a ghost kitchen where you do not see any talo workers.

Kordé F.

Yelp
Amazing food, and didn't take too long to bring out the food either! Great spot for lunch or dinner and has Great seating for multiple people aswell. Yall need to get down to talo right now!!! GOD BLESS and JESUS LOVES YOU ALL

Yelp
Cabo bowl is good and same with the fries The fact that this is the healthiest options for food out there is the selling point Knowing this the value and cost is worth it

Yelp
Update: while I appreciate the response from the owner, who also has Celiac, I don't appreciate telling me my experience was wrong and my cross contamination couldn't possibly have been from them. I hadn't eaten anything else that day and I've been diagnosed for over 13 years. I also know my body and illness, just as I'm sure she knows hers. I do appreciate the background-spices are a hidden gluten culprit, so that's fab to know-and the updated info. Perhaps I will give them a try again, but maybe, just maybe, think about how you respond to others and their experience. You can take all the precautions in the world, but something still could have slipped in somewhere and it unfortunately doesn't change the fact I reacted. Again, the additional information about the kitchen, etc is appreciated and I'll take that into consideration when deciding to dine there again. As someone with Celiac, I was hesitant to try this place, as it's not a restaurant but a ghost kitchen, in Colony. I wish they were more transparent about that-Goop is in the same location and they state they cannot handle Celiac. While I don't love places that state GF, but aren't truly, I at least appreciate transparency. Anyhow, the owner assured me on IG that they could accommodate Celiac, so I decided to give it a try. Orders are placed via a kiosk and the menu is alright. Food options are solid and my order came out fairly quickly. As for the food itself-I absolutely agree with everyone who states the meat is dry and overcooked. The portion sizes also absolutely do not align with the prices-I get you are seed oil free, etc etc, but come on. Almost 40 bucks for a small salad, with overcooked meat, and a side of fries is ridiculous. The fries were the best thing, honestly. I will say while I didn't get full sick, I def had cross contamination symptoms. Be aware if you truly have celiac or other allergies. Parking in back. Be aware it's in Colony, so a ghost kitchen situation, with very limited seating and open to the street (Lincoln) vibes.

Yelp
This is tough because I believe in what they are doing incredibly. You can go on the site and read their practices in detail--totally commendable and so on the right track. However, we really did not enjoy our order. I picked up one platter of chicken and one of steak. I'm eating more protein for health considerations and wanted to have something easily accessible to pair with salads, veggies, etc. The seasoning on the steak was just horrible, to me. I believe it was really heavy on cumin (???), but not positive I'm identifying it properly. I did not end up eating the chicken because once we got it home, I saw mostly or all brown meat, and I pretty much only eat breast. I just asked my husband what he felt was wrong with it and his answer was "I don't know, but it was the least tasty chicken I've had in a very long time." He was not a fan of the sauces either. I won't give it less than three stars because of their commitment to safeguarding the health of their customers. But for the price, their meat was really tough to swallow. I could not even force myslef to eat it and can't even give it to my cat because they were so heavy with the unsavory spices. I hope that it's possible to bring in someone to revamp their choice of seasonings.

Yelp
My friend and I have had a couple of meals now at Talo Organic after some beach time over the weekend. I liked it enough to come back pretty soon, so that's saying something. You can find them in the Colony Kitchen in Venice, then order from the kiosk. Covered outdoor seats are available for dining in or you can take your eats to go. I've had minimal interactions with staff here as it's a grab & go type of place, but on my first visit, someone did ask how everything was! You don't often see that at ghost kitchens. Now, Talo Organic does a lot of great things like being seed oil free, grass-fed pasture raised beef only, no preservatives they pay attention to their cooking utensils and pans making sure to use stainless steel cookware. But one thing that has plagued our meats both time we've been here? Dryness! If meat is your main thing and the flavor is great, why not have it nice and juicy to boot!? Sigh! I still like it, but usually moreso when it's in my leftovers at home and I can properly cook it. When honestly, it should be best right there in person. Now that being said, I still like Talo Organic and have enjoyed everything I've tried protein wise - Barbacoa, Chicken and Steak - were all delicious. Just needed the dryness eradicated in each. Their beef tallow fries were also really tasty! Plus they give you helpful reheating options. Overall, I love having a healthy option like this and like the flavor, but let me know when you all fix up the dryness a bit for me & my friends to come back!

Yelp
First of all I wanted to say I love what you are doing Talo for creating a space supporting a healthy diet and taking every step at your restaurant to provide the healthiest food possible. From pasture raised, no seed oils, no plastic or non stick pans! I also love that you partnered with Santa Cruz and other healthy influencers to promote a healthy lifestyle and especially the younger generation. I'd say my diet falls in line with this movement so when I heard of Talo, I was so happy to try it out. Drove out 45 mins to try it and parked easily! I already knew what I was going to get, I got the Santorini bowl. It had great flavor and tasted so clean. My critique on the bowl was the portion size wasn't the best personally for the price. I know more healthy foods are more pricey but at a minimum probably more rice added would be ideal and I think that can set you apart even more. The chips were also great too! Last thing was that they ran out of fries and said there was a shortage in California? Ayo I don't think there was a shortage lol, looked it up and even went to other restaurants with fry/potato items. Super disappointed with this because it's one of the items I know everyone be getting. I don't mean to be harsh but legitimately I wanted to mob out for this food but it didn't meet a 5 star expectation. Keep doing your thing though!

Yelp
Omg!! I am a health nut and I'm so grateful to have this place near me. Me and my best friend just tried and it, she got the steak bowl and I got the barbacoa bowl ! They were both really good. It's quality food organic and seed oil free!!! So important and rare to find. I would recommend. It's a bit on the pricier side and maybe a bit smaller portions but it is quality.
google avatar

Noa B.

Yelp
Love the concept, but the execution wasn't there. we got a salad and a fries bowl and it barely came with any fries. the salad veggies weren't fresh and we got like five pieces of lettuce.. the lettuce was old and blackened around the edges :( the steak was ok but pretty dry. The photo of the dish shows avocado and it doesn't come with avocado. Pretty disappointed as Santacruzmedicinals really hyped this spot up but we will probably not be coming back. The taste just doesn't justify the price.
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
I ordered two Cabo Bowls with chicken and was really disappointed. The chicken was completely burnt -- more than half of it was blackened to the point of being inedible. Over 50% of the chicken had to be picked out and thrown away, which made the bowls feel like a total waste. For the price, I expected a fresh and well-prepared meal, but instead I got food that looked and tasted like it had been left on the grill way too long. The toppings and sides were fine, but the chicken is supposed to be the main part of the bowl, and it was ruined.
google avatar

Meg D.

Yelp
The taste is sadly marred by the size :( If this is what they consider a "side" of fries, they should hire an ex McDonalds employee to consult on a menu revamp. This is smaller than a happy meal-sized portion- and for $7.14 these should be, at least, covered in caviar or truffles. They aren't as good the fries at Hiho Cheeseburger which cost $5.25 and are at minimum, 3 times the size. I Love that this place is seed oil free... but at this price, it's absolutely nuts to rebuy again. I would rather pay $20 and get a decent sized order or a "side" that costs $2. Very underwhelming and disappointing!
google avatar

LJ L.

Yelp
I'm gonna give 3 stars for effort. it was pretty bland without the sauces (although i did order to go and my drive was 10 min so i may give one more chance and eat there. The fries cost 8 dollars and I got a total of 12 fries. Correct my quick math if im wrong but that's about 65 cents per fry? Can't support that unfortunately so i may not get to try these again. But at least it wasn't fried in conola oil or something. Overall I'd say it's fine? and i love the no seed oil thing and organic etc but honestly if I didn't get the uber eats bogo deal on the bowl i may feel differently. Like I said I may give it another shot but that's my thoughts for now
google avatar

Joshua F.

Yelp
Awesome food! Got the taco sampler and talllow fries. The portions were actually huge. Some people have complained about that and other reviews but you can see it looks like they have their fries portions figured out. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Dimple P.

Yelp
50 dollars later this place made me just want to eat seed oils when I'm out. Service was great and the ambiance of sitting outside on the street corner was great.
google avatar

StarGazer S.

Yelp
The food was excellent - full of flavor and juicy. It was messy, loaded with guac and their crema sauce. The chicken was my favorite, though steak and barbacoa were also amazing. The tallow fries felt clean too. I left feeling super satisfied.
google avatar

Jamie L.

Yelp
It's so impressive and amazing to have a restaurant truly take a stand against fake food. No seed oils, pasture-raised proteins, organic produce, 100% grass-fed beef, no gums or artificial ingredients, no plastic cutting boards, and more. Finally, a restaurant truly committed to health without compromising flavor!
google avatar

Kimberly R.

Yelp
I'm all for clean ingredients, I love this about talo however it's silly that they only offer taco trios and don't sell a la carte tacos. First of all, that's A LOT of food. The tacos aren't street sized, they're big. One taco would be more than enough for me. The tacos weren't bad but they weren't really good either. I can't justify the price and I was only able to eat 2 because the portion was huge. It's just wasteful that I had to throw a taco away. Might give it another try if they start doing a la carte. Def never paying for a trio again.
google avatar

Kerry K.

Yelp
Talo is so great I wish they would open in South Bay. No seed oils. No gluten, soy or gums. Reverse osmosis water and no plastics used in the preparation of their food? I wish we didn't have to look for these things because every restaurant upheld these standards but if Talo is the one that will I will be dining here as much as I can. The service was really great and they were attentive.
google avatar

Arch M.

Yelp
Very dry food -- not as advertised. The ingredients didn't taste fresh, and the price is extremely high for what you get. It's self-serve but priced like a sit-down restaurant. I ordered the Taco Trio and didn't like it at all; the chicken and beef tasted off, possibly expired.
google avatar

Alex G.

Yelp
Got to check out Talo Organic during their soft opening and was so impressed that I've already been back a few times! If you're into organic food, this place is for you! Their attention to detail is so impressive - from their high quality ingredients to how they run their kitchen plastic-free to their well informed and friendly staff. I'm so glad there's finally a place where I can eat worry-free about what's in the food and how it's made. Loved the Cabo bowl - and the fries were some of the best I'd had in a long time! Can't wait to try everything else.

Ivana S.

Yelp
Got this via food delivery. The meal was tasteless. Tacos were just a big slobber of meat that just didn't taste good or didn't have any taste. Went strait to trash. Wasted money

Lyss G.

Yelp
Wow... this place was so good when they had their pop up :( my bowl I ordered the steak was so dry and overlooked and they gave me less than chipotle or cava would and charged more. We paid almost $60 for tacos, a bowl and fries. The only thing that tasted good was the fries and they still needed salt. I'm super bummed because the idea is there to have healthy food but it was just very poorly prepared. I couldn't even finish my food. The price is insane for it not being a sit down restaurant.

Dylan M.

Yelp
Place needs a lot of work. Definitely no chipotle or Cava beating venture like Brendan Santa Cruz Medicinals is cracking Talo up to be. Ordered a Cabo Rice Bowl veggie, with no meat choice, and got charged the regular $18.95 price because their pos system didn't have the button for veggie orders yet, that's not my complaint, place is just starting out whatever. Veggie meals are supposed to come with extra veggies, and as pictured the amount of "veggies" in the Cabo Rice Bowl is laughable. Also a totally medicore portion. Only reason I'm leaving a 2 star review instead of 1 star is the Barbacoa Cabo Rice Bowl that was also in our order. It tasted good, but again the portion size was way off. Portions need to more than double to be maybe be equal to Chipotle as was promised with the concept of this restaurant. Definitely not worth paying the $4-$5 premium over a Chipotle order with guac included in that price when the food comes out like this.
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
First time trying this and was completely disappointed. I understand the whole, no seed oil's, but the food has no flavor especially the beef and the secret sauce is just as bad. Looks good visually but taste wise this was probably the worst $23.42 meal I've ever had. I don't think that taste and flavor should be sacrificed for the sake of healthy food.

Joel R.

Yelp
I have never written a review until today. Extremely disappointed with the lack of flavor, portion, and price. 24 Dollars for literally 8 fries and some meat?I understand that it's seed oil free and yada yada but like come on now Tasted extremely bland but looks social media appealing. Seems like they prioritize clicks and likes over actual good tasting food. Would not come here again 2/10 :/
google avatar

Doss L.

Yelp
What a Gem! I work 10 minutes from this Amazing dining spot and this is now my #1 go to! Fast and friendly service and the Organic menu is Delicious!

Tisa M.

Yelp
The honey chicken rice bowl is my go to favorite. I love the clean food and they take it a step further and containers are all plastic free. Just one question. Can you tell me the calories or macros for your plates ?
google avatar

Caden

Yelp
Food was pretty good and love that it was seed oil free.. Fries/Rice and cheese portion was way smaller than expected, although the protein portion was good compared to Chipotle.. Was a bit pricey for the amount of food but the ingredients were top notch.

Kasandra W.

Yelp
I ordered the Cabo fries and the strawberry dessert. It was not very good at all. The food came out cold, no flavor and the fries were soggy. And after eating I felt so sick. On top of all of this it's so over priced and the environment was not pleasant. Very disappointed! I was excited to try this place. I won't be coming back.

K B.

Yelp
Will definitely be returning. All gluten free, seed oil free, plastic free, grass fed. Honestly what more can you ask for? Portion looked small, but kids and I filled up. My husband said he wished there was more bc it was so good. Clean location, friendly staff, enough seating when we were there. Wish they were closer , in Torrance and I'd go more often.

Adit A.

Yelp
Food was ok. nothing special. Chicken tacos were the best out of the trio that i ordered. (beef and carnitas). the carnitas has NO flavor at all. Would it kill to add some seasoning and salt??
google avatar

Maria Q.

Yelp
While I am so appreciative of more and more restaurants eliminating seed oil from their food, there's still a lot of room for improvement here. Almost all the items on the menu were sold out when we came by Saturday for a late lunch. So we got the Barbacoa tacos and an order of fries. The shredded beef in the tacos was so BLAND, it was honestly giving 'salt restricted diet from a rest home.' However, the guacamole was fresh as were the pineapple chucks. The tacos were dripping wet and soggy. But also completely flavorless. Not the best combination! Onto the fries: also quite bland, soggy, and grease soaked. Yet flaccid and bendy. Little to no seasoning here too. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come back. Ambience was to be expected for this co-op style of place that seems to be increasing in popularity. It's personally not my favorite. I find it a bit sterile. But if the food was good, I would still go.
google avatar

Matt J.

Yelp
I appreciate the concept, but the food still needs to be good. Chicken was out of stock, so I ordered steak tacos online. The meat was tough, chewy, fatty, and with no flavor. I have up after trying to gnaw my way through 1 taco. Grass fed is great, but it still needs to be chewable. The tortillas were soggy and everything was just cold and seemed like it had been sitting around and not fresh. The guacamole was good, but at $20 for 3 tacos I need more than that. A big disappointment.
google avatar

Ali L.

Yelp
A clean eating option with a blast of flavor! Something for everyone on the menu, good value, super fresh, great atmosphere. Chips and guacamole are heavenly!

Tanner P.

Yelp
Came back and asked for a little more rice and they indeed hooked me up with plenty. As someone who loves rice, maybe a little too much, this was one of the best bowls I've ever had. Will be stopping here for sure every time I'm by Venice!

Connor M.

Yelp
After hearing utmost positivity regarding the quality and taste of Talo's food from select social media influencers and pushers of the anti-seed-oil movement, I can confidently confirm that the praise in which Talo receives from this corner of the health community is highly-deserved. I ordered their half-pound of steak with tallow fries and admired both the portion size and taste of all my choices. My only complaint stems from a lack of resources currently available to Talo; their method of service varies from that of most sit-down experiences (customers must order from a kiosk), so my original expectations of a sit-down style restaurant weren't exactly met. If dining in, note that the view is simply a busy street and the dining area doesn't exactly match the vibe for a full group excursion. However, if simply attending for the exquisite food, you will not be disappointed. Restaurants which reject a traditional, mediocre way of preparing foods should be uplifted for their pioneering efforts, and thus, I recommend Talo for anyone in search of a guilt and fear-free food experience that far exceeds the quality of other "healthy" and "cost-friendly food chains like Chipotle and CAVA.
google avatar

Mrthreepoint_shooter M.

Yelp
Great Service and the food taste really good. I recommend The Santorini fries are really good.

Laura

Yelp
Talo Organic was delicious! Everything is made with fresh, clean ingredients. It's located in The Colony on Lincoln Blvd. Don't love the location but it has great foot traffic. They offer tall tables and stools to sit on......I would love for Talo to become a brick and modor. I tried the salad with steak and it had great flavor! When I was done eating I felt satisfied and not that full gross feeling you get when you eat other foods. My husband ordered the 3 trio tacos and he really enjoyed them. His only critique was the steak was a little over cooked. We will definitely be back again!

Maximus A.

Yelp
The food quality is unmatched by anywhere, they really go above and beyond for everything, even the cutting boards and kitchen prepping materials are of the highest quality. Now the taste of these beef tallow fried french fries and half pound of 100% grass fed regeneratively raised beef was superb. For $20, it's really not a bad deal at all considering a lb of regenerative ground beef is $13 at the grocery store.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Food is healthy and tasty, but portion size is too small. I usually wouldn't complain, but the influencer/creator Santa Cruz was saying how the meat portions are bigger than Chipotle bowl. The bowl I got was definitely less than 4oz of meat. Maybe the chef messed up my order, but I won't be going there again because it won't be enough protein for my macros.

Bill L.

Yelp
Amazing and affordable! Fries are incredible and the honey comb smoothies was a great twist! I have been waiting for a legitimate healthy option to eating out and you hit all the marks.
google avatar

Brooks B.

Yelp
Talo is insanely good... seriously. It's rare to find food this healthy and tasty. The tallow fries are out of this world. On their opening day, Graham (the owner) took the time to talk with me about his passion for creating Talo and the mission behind the company and walk us through the whole menu, give us recommendations, etc. despite having a line around the block. He genuinely cares about each of his customers and the quality of everyone's experience eating here. I will be back (very often)!!
google avatar

Connor R.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. We went for the soft opening. They hooked us up with so much good food. Don't have to worry about the ingredients. It's all quality. Felt great afterwards and the next day. Really nice family. Awesome restaurant that is doing important and honest work for the world. I will be eating there way too much. I will need to make more money to afford my Talo habit. Can't wait to go back! Thank you Talo!

Justin T.

Yelp
Graham has created exceptional food with the absolute best ingredients and highest standards. We are blessed to have this restaurant in this community.

JC S.

Yelp
The catering was outstanding! The food was delicious and the hit of my party! I highly recommend Talo!

Brian S.

Yelp
the steak was good but the chicken was like kinda extra chopped up like i had no teeth but it was pretty good and the garlic sauce tied it all together #solid

Paola S.

Yelp
the food is just absolutely clean; so grateful to have a space like this in our community. i definitely ate 6 tacos and an order of fries santorini fries with barbacoa-- not once did i feel inflamed, tired, brain fogged, or heavy after my meal. We will be back!!

Nick P.

Yelp
Go here. Minimum character number for yelp review 85. But all I can say is go here. If you are addicted to the taste of fast food, might not be for you. But all I can say is that the food here tastes like you're eating real food. It makes you question what you are eating at every other restaurant hahaha. I went with my girlfriend today and we agreed that the nourishment we felt from the food felt different from other eating out experiences. Hoping for more locations in the future!! The cabo fries kinda gets you the best of everything -- meat, tallow fries, veggies, guacamole, cheese, creme, and tomatoes.

Rocket K.

Yelp
This place has amazing food quality I really enjoyed all the proteins in all variations since in opened I have had almost every and must say Delicious... since finding it on Santa Cruz Medicinal on insta its a bit pricey at 20$ a bowl but the quality is there so yeah and Seans the best face of the buisness you could ask for guy truly holds Talo up with his high vibe and friendly attitude makes me keep coming back for whatever he recommends. He deserves to be a GM.

Gavin F.

Yelp
It was really good and go over to century city and I wish there was one at the mall here, I would eat there multiple times a week if it was closer to my routine. It suits my eating standards which are pretty strict.
