Where to Eat Along America’s Iconic Highways | Eater

"Running from Prescott to Flagstaff, AZ-89A in Arizona is known as an especially scenic highway, thanks in part to the stretch running through Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona. In Red Rock country, stop at Tamaliza Cafe, a casual Mexican cafeteria that opened in 2015 to much local delight. Originally from Mexico, owner Claudia Gonzales left the northeast U.S. for Arizona, where she opened her own restaurant focused on using organic, non-GMO ingredients to make tamales by hand, as well as rice, beans, and plates of the day. Vegan, vegetarian, and meat-filled tamales are all offered daily, with a signature tamale supremo plate slathered in black beans, salsa, sour cream, guacamole, baby spinach, cheese, and house-pickled radish." - Vox Creative

Google
Blink and you'll miss this place as you drive by. It's a family run Mexican restaurant that is known for tamales. The limited menu focuses on fresh and natural ingredients and claims to be authentic. Seating is somewhat limited but there was plenty of room on our visit. The restaurant was busy but not crowded. You order at a counter and pay before you receive your food which makes tipping seem pointless, but they ask you to do so anyway. Portions here are very small for a Mexican restaurant and I think I ate the rice and beans that came with my burrito in about five bites. The burrito itself differentiates itself from most typical fare by including queso fresco and spinach which was a nice change. My wife had a tamale which she said was very nice but also a bit small. She had a hibiscus tea with it which she liked, although it was pretty pricey at $7. The kids both had burritos, one chicken and one shredded beef. They both were happy with them but said it wasn't as good as the one we had the day before. I thought it was a nice change from the typical Mexican food you normally get everywhere but the portion was pretty small for $22 and it was cold in the center. I know this is Sedona and they like to fleece the tourists but lunch for four for $105 is pretty egregious. Anyway, the food tasted good and the outdoor seating had a nice view, but I'd like a bit more value for money and I'd like to get my food before anyone asks me for a tip.

Google
Tamaliza in Sedona is such a hidden gem! Not only was the food incredible, the Chicken Supreme Tamale was absolutely delicious and full of flavor! The views of the red rocks from the outdoor patio seating were stunning, making the whole experience feel peaceful and special. You can taste the love in every bite, and the friendly staff made us feel right at home. A must-visit spot if you’re in Sedona!

Google
Legendary. Authentic tamales made from scratch, delectable mole sauce, spicy salsa (if you ask). This place is incredible, we couldn't recommend it any higher! We tried the tamale supreme and the mole chicken enchiladas, it was perfect.

Google
A sort of family run place with friendly, efficient service. Food is good but not necessary consistently so. Some dishes were great while others ho hum. Pricing is average to high for a typical Mexican restaurant, but then Sedona is a tourist trap. Seating is both inside and outside, and the place has a very casual vibe.

Google
A delicious little out-of-the-way, authentic Mexican experience. HIGHLY recommend for people who want a more unique Mexican dining experience (and don’t want the bottomless bowl of greasy chips) than what you get at the common American “Mexican” restaurants. I had the tacos and my husband had the veggie tamale. We also got a small order of chips, guacamole and salsa. Everything was freshly made and perfectly seasoned. Their salsa was soooo divine, I could have eaten a bowl of that by itself! The interior of the building is adorably designed with colorful paintings and furniture, the outside seating has views of Boynton Canyon and beyond. Do yourself a favor and skip the usual Mexican restaurants for this little dash of authentic experience.

Google
Beautiful view from the back patio. The service was lovely. The best part was THE FOOD- it all tasted fresh with good ingredients. Great vegetarian/vegan options too. I loved my tamale supremo but I'm glad I also got a single enchilada for some more. The pineapple drink was also great.

Google
The supremo tamales sound bigger than they are. Don't mind spending $19 for a tamale but wish it was worth it in terms of portion and flavour. Somewhat average flavor and small portions after a long morning hike made this feel underwhelming.

Google
Heard so much about this spot and wanted to try it, first off driving here was very beautiful and scenic. We got the chicken taco and chicken supremo Tamales which was a 10/10. There was so much flavors in the chicken and well seasoned. The tamales were very flavor and worth it.

Yelp
Great great great tamales. Very casual. Nice decor. Lovely helpful staff. Grab a table outside and enjoy.

Yelp
It is kind of like a self serve restaurant. It was weird. You come in and they have you find a place to sit. Then one person from the family can go up and place the entire families order. My husband would never be able to do that. LOL! That is kind of unreasonable. The food was OK. It was not great like I expected and it was a little disappointing based on other reviews.

Yelp
Tamaliza is my favorite healthy Mexican restaurant in Sedona! This is a small family owned and run restaurant located in a strip mall shopping center. The restaurant decor is super cute, and the ambiance feels like you are dining in Mexico at a small mom and pops style eatery. The owner is a patrona, whom does most of the cooking when she is not in Mexico visiting family; and her husband runs the front of the house taking orders and assisting guests. The husband is very kind man, and he is extremely helpful if you have questions or need suggestions when ordering off the menu. The food here is AMAZZZZING! I highly recommend the beef tamales and chicken enchiladas in mole -- they were def my favorite items! The chicken tamale supreme was also very good! I would pass on the homemade horchata & (Jamaica) hibiscus tea next time though; the horchata was very thick & chalky, which could probably be easily rectified by straining the rice a bit more before serving it; and the hibiscus tea was too tart for me. Tamaliza is expensive for Mexican cuisine, but it's important to keep in mind that the food here is very "healthy Mexican" and light; so when you are done eating you don't feel boated, heartburn, or like you just gorged yourself by overeating! I would absolutely come here again and again for the beef tamales & chicken enchiladas in mole ... I LOVED the well-balanced spicy & sweet mole sauce, the not too spicy red & green salsa, and the solid personable customer service by the co-owner! The primary reason for the four star review is based on the portion size when compared to the price point -- I think the portion sizes should be substantially larger for the high cost of each menu item.

Yelp
My partner and I came to this restaurant because it was one of the more highly rated places in the area. We were originally going to try going to uptown for Mexican food but the reviews were very lack luster. The restaurant itself is really cute and quaint. It feels like your eating at someone's home. We chose to sit in the outside area, which was nice. You look at the menu at your table but order inside. Despite the mixed reviews, I tried the pork tamale supremo. Like others have mentioned, I'm from California (Bay Area but have lived in LA for almost 10 years) so I'm used to parking lot/side of the road/family friend homemade tamales (and amazing Mexican food), so to see the price and size of these tamales was surprising. The tamale to me was just ok. The variety of topping/ was interesting but not super necessary. But without these toppings, I'm afraid the tamale would have been lacking in flavor. My partner ordered the chicken tacos. I tried them and they were very bland. It seemed as though they just used boiled chicken without any seasonings whatsoever. It definitely needed the avocado salsa that it came with. We also tried the Jamaica. Note that is it unsweetened if you're used to sweetened Jamaica. I happened to have some sweetener packets on me so we were able to sweeten it to our liking.

Yelp
Wow!! This was a great experience! It's a nice little restaurant with shaded outdoor seating and amazing food! You can bring your dog with you to the outdoor seating area. You have to go inside to place the order and then they bring the food out to your table. When the food showed up, we were blown away. My tamale was so delicious and it was topped with beans and salad items. My husband also enjoyed his taco plate, one taco with pork and the other with beef. Definitely check them out.

Yelp
Tamales were alright, my biggest gripe was that they served me a chicken tamale though I specifically said i was vegetarian. And on my friends tamale on the same order they added avacado though we asked that they hold this as she is severely allergic. Two strikes in one order is not a good sign especially when there are dietary restrictions :(

Yelp
OMGOODNESS! The vegan tamale was sooo delicious! Very nice ladies operate this little Sedona gem. Friends had non vegan plates and said their was delicious as well.
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
The tamales are delicious, but the prices are so high for the size. The chicken in green sauce was good. The chicken mole tamale was excellent. I'm used to buying tamales off the side of the road that are bigger for $2-3 or $10 for big fat tamales at the farmers market. But $10-12 for skinny tamales makes me sad. I guess that's how much they have to charge in Sedona to run a brick and mortar. Service is friendly so definitely support if you're in the area. The ambiance is cute.

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a Friday midday. We were seated and served fairly quickly, but by the time we were leaving there was a short wait for a table. Given it's a small place, your mileage may vary. We each went for a tamale, I had the solo chicken mole tamale. Given it was $10 per solo tamale, I figured it would be pretty hefty, but it was definitely on the smaller side. The mole flavor was unfortunately also on the mediocre end of things. My friend got one of the loaded tamales, certainly more filling but a little under $20 for one was definitely a stretch. The flavors didn't really work all that well together, kind of just a mish mash of toppings as if it were the meat lovers equivalent of a tamale. Overall we were pretty disappointed with the experience, hard to feel like this isn't a tourist trap. I'd definitely recommend looking elsewhere when visiting Sedona

Yelp
Found this unique restaurant in Sedona, made possible by talented Mexican ladies with a passion for tradition and authenticity. The flavors will stay in your heart and mind long after you're done eating. I wished the portions were larger for the price, but I like to eat a lot, so I'm always looking for more!

Yelp
First stop in Sedona, Yelp pointed us to this place. Thank you, Yelp!! Delicious. Like so fabulous and tasty, I would have a hard time putting this into words. Small intimate restaurant with plenty of seating options. Friendly staff greet you upon arrival and offer suggestions if needed. The view is gorgeous as an entry into all things Sedona. But, the food is overall the main attraction. Slightly expensive for portion sizes, although I found that to be true for all of Sedona. At first bite, you forget the price and enjoy all the flavors! Amazing!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Favorite place we went to in Sedona!!! You walk in and you can clearly tell us family run and the power of all the women there working is so wonderful. When we went in you had to sit first and you'd get a beeper to tell you when to order. We waited 10ish minutes to order and then another 5-10 minutes for our food. The tamales were GREAT. The guac was also wonderful and you can tell they were made fresh and were so wonderful
google avatar

Yelp
We loved every single bite! Their vegan options are fantastic. We had the vegan gourmet burrito which was filled with shredded oyster mushrooms in a red sauce. So good! And the vegan Tamale Supremo was excellent! I also love that they use no lard or chicken stock. The service from this family owned restaurant was friendly and attentive. Also, be sure to sit on the patio for the best view.
google avatar

Maiko K.

Yelp
My goodness their tamal was good! I had one with chicken mole and it was absolutely delicious! I love that it comes with some salad on top. The view from the restaurant is breathtaking. Friendly service by the lady who took our order. I really liked the homey feel of this place. This will now be my go-to place when I visit Sedona

Yelp
Nice casual ambience with great views. Nice and cool on a hot afternoon. The staff is friendly and the ingredients are high quality.

Yelp
Family operated. Authentic from Mexico City. Taxco. I frequently dine here (at least twice a week) and will stop gatekeeping and share this gem I hold so close to my tummy. The first comment I must share is the consistency of the food. Normally I order the beef taco plate. The rice is always so fluffy no matter what time of day or night I come. The beef has the perfect amount of flavor,Let's not leave out the gas less black beans!! Delish The avocado tomatillo salsa gives the tacos the perfect touch. Organic and gluten free Tamales are their specialty! The staff is always so pleasant, and helpful. Very clean. The decor is so vibrant and inviting. Have patience although it is a small restaurant inside with a breathtaking outdoor patio. The food is worth the wait.

Yelp
You cannot come to Sedona and not stop at Tamaliza. This place was recommended to me by a foodie friend and I'm glad I made the time. Perfect place to enjoy a delicious meal after hiking. I ordered the tamale supremo and chose pork adobo as my filler. It was hands down the best tamale I've ever had and my mom makes homemade tamales every holiday season.
google avatar

Alla A.

Yelp
Very cute place. Definitely authentic, and the food quality was awesome! Everything is super tasty! However, every person in our party of 6 thought that the pricing was unusually high. I mean yeah, we know, it's Sedona, but the cost to the amount of food was definitely overpriced.
google avatar

Yelp
The presentation was beautiful. Had veggie tamale supremo and the Chile relleno. Both were very good. We had the Jacaima mixed with their fermented pineapple drink was very refreshing. Yelp
Authentic home-made mexican food!... very cozy location, DELICIOUS food, accessible parking, and good service. The portions were very small for my taste and the price was a bit hi. I would recommend not to go very hungry. The bill can get pricey. But for an experience, it may be worth it.
google avatar

Ilsa A.

Yelp
We had the most wholesome and delicious meal here on our second night in Sedona. You can truly taste the difference by the fresh quality ingredients they use in everything from the chips, to the beans, to the tortillas that are handmade. The inside of the restaurant feels very homey, and the decor is authentic Mexican style! Service was very good, and we were welcomed kindly. I would highly recommend this spot to anyone looking to eat a high-quality meal, and to support a great local business. Last thing I'll note, there is outdoor seating as well, so if you have your furry friend with you, you can go out and sit on their covered patio. Thank you again Tamaliza! We will be back
google avatar

Nishank J.

Yelp
Subpar tamales and extremely small portion size for the money that they are charging. Service is ok. Cute location, but would avoid it the next time. Tamale is definitely not their speciality.
google avatar

Deb S.

Yelp
Delish!!! What a great lunch stop! Drizzly rain and hail and a perfect dog-friendly patio to enjoy some wonderful Mexican food. The salsa was excellent, and great with the toasty chips. The tacos, beef and pork were so good with a side of yummy beans and rice. The chicken tamale solo was incredible. One of the best I have ever had. And the homemade horchata - WOW!!!! Loved this place.
google avatar

Chuckles S.

Yelp
Food good. What' makes this 5 star is the warm family that owns the restaurant. I felt welcome with hospitality and kindness. Very chill lunch.
google avatar

Kimber L.

Yelp
The chicken tamale I had was tasty and the tepache (a fermented pineapple drink) was very good. While I appreciate that the ingredients used are non GMO and organic it's a lot to pay $58 for a tamale and a burrito with rice and beans and a coke. It's the price that knocks down the rating for me. The service amounts to the food being brought to the table. You go up and order yourself. No one ever came to ask us if everything was ok or if we needed anything else.
google avatar

Pamela S.

Yelp
A must stop for a quick bite. I had the pork tamale (supreme minus the dairy) and it was absolutely some of the best I ever had. The flavors are bold and the tamale was not dry. It is however, a bit on the pricey side...$18.50 for one tamale and fixins. $4 for a soda. Kind of to be expected given all of Sedona is expensive, but I'm used to paying a few bucks for one at my local mom and pop shop.
google avatar

Melissa K.

Yelp
AMAZING!! A MUST STOP!!! Freshest veggies, organic ingredients, homemade tamales, delicious burritos and enchiladas, a total package with the authentic ambiance and food made right in front of you. Nicest staff!!

Toby S.

Yelp
Please do yourself a favor and consider other venues. I don't normally write reviews, but I'm hoping to help others that are considering this restaurant. We walked in (table for 5), so we found our own seating, even though there was only 1 other person in the restaurant. We sat down waiting for a server, then finally realized without being told, that we had to go up to the counter to order, which we did. You pay in advance, with a tip requested before any service is provided. Only bottled sodas! Water was brought to the table which was room temperature with no ice! On a hot day! Yuck!! We Then asked for ice, and was brought water with literally less than 10 ice cubes in a pitcher, which melted right away and was still not cold! The rice and beans had very little flavor. All of this for $155.. The people were nice, but not a clue on customer service. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere!

Jamie H.

Yelp
Food was delicious! Everyone enjoyed their meals. Highly recommend the signature tamale. The fermented pineapple drink packed a punch!
google avatar

Kendra M.

Yelp
Food was really delicious. The price is high but I felt good supporting a local family. This place is the real deal. You can tell they are passionate about their food and family owned business. I would return again, if possible.
google avatar

Genevieve D.

Yelp
Small portions and expensive but delicious. Got the veggie tamales no toppings for $10, husband tamale with toppings for $19.50 Would not likely come back since you can get roadside stand tamales that are just as good for $3.00 - $4.00. BUT! That's what you should expect in Sedona.
google avatar

Yuo G.

Yelp
This place was wonderful. We had the tamales supreme and they were delicious. I loved the ambiance and the service was very friendly.
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
You place your order at the front desk. They deliver to your table. We ordered the chicken enchiladas and beef tacos plates. The food was visually attractive. It tasted okay but you didn't get value for your money. If you were hungry you would have to order more to be satisfied. The tacos had quality beef but not filled with a wide variety of components you typically have. If you're going to overcharge me at least make me feel like I'm going to be fed. It's a small cozy family business.
google avatar

Katy C.

Yelp
Delicious and family-owned! Unique spot with seriously homemade food. The beef burrito was a 4/5 but the pork tamales were a 5/5! Would recommend.
google avatar

Anastacia R.

Yelp
If you want the best chicken mole tamale you have ever tried in your life...you need to come here. It is SO so perfect. I am sure I'll be dreaming of it when I am back home. It's a little pricey but worth it. Mom has the chicken mole enchiladas...delicious as well but we thought the tamale was out of this world. Masa was not greasy, but not dry. The restaurant is small and will fill fast--seating outside. But decorated so cute! Service is as attentive as they can be...you seat yourself and order at the counter. I'm not sure how they figured out who ordered what--but they did. I would definitely come back...it's delicious.

Christina A.

Yelp
Great Food Love the extra Homemade steps for preparing their meals very Healthy and Authentic. Will be back and Highly recommend this little sweet Mexican Cafe.
google avatar

Ray M.

Yelp
After numerous trips to sedona and passive by this place we finally decided to check it out today. So glad we did . This is a small family run authhentically Mexican restaurant with the most delicious food . A variety of tamale fillings . I had the pork and it was wonderful . The horchata is also highly recommended. There are fancier Mexican restaurants in town but none serve better food than this . I'll never come to Sedona without stopping here again. .
google avatar

CT F.

Yelp
Wonderful family-run little cafe. Mole sauce was to die for. You order at the counter then they bring you your food. Tamales are their go-to special and they didn't disappoint! Yummmm
google avatar

Nitinram V.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Tried their mole sauce, it was absolutely fantastic. You have gorgeous views while eating too
google avatar

Vivienne S.

Yelp
We loved this place! The tamales here are amazing. I had the pork version. My husband had the chicken. So delicious but actually tasted healthy, in the best possible way. The charming decor and the views out the front window were the icing on the cake. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Tamaliza is a cozy, quaint, beautifully decorated restaurant. But the host was unwelcoming, even prissy, and the food was subpar at best. The guacamole tasted refrigerated and overladen with too many ingredients, destroying the flavor of the avocado. The salsa was the most boring salsa I have ever eaten in a restaurant. My chicken enchiladas verde were just OK. Black beans were pretty simple and dull. My son ordered a chicken quesadilla, kid sized. It was OK Having just driven up from Tucson, this Mexican cafe is inferior to many of the most basic, humble family restaurants we enjoyed, which were far more authentic and flavorful. Judging from all the five star reviews this place got, I just don't get it. Maybe it's just a Sedona thing. Somehow the bill came to $57. Since I didn't get a receipt, and never remembered clicking the tip button on the iPad when I paid for the food, (which I had to do when I ordered it,), I didn't know if I had paid for the tip upfront or not. When I asked whether or not I had paid a tip, The prissy host commented that he hadn't checked me out and didn't know. When I mentioned that I didn't have a receipt, so I was unsure, he remarked that "this is 2024 and receipts were not necessary". Apparently he doesn't eat at other restaurants.
google avatar

Jan B.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious, but the best part was enjoying the warm and friendly bustle of the staff.
google avatar

Yelp
I will have to say, I was the only one who was not thrilled with the food here. There were three of us and my wife and so thought the food was good and I just did not. A few details, this is a counter serve restaurant that is fairly small. There are two inside rooms and one outside room and the views are BREATHTAKING. Service is friendly. The restaurant is clean. Price range is solidly in the $$ category. But the food MM, what about the food? Chips and salsa - salsa was thin, but packed a lot of flavor but the bowl of chips were so small, we had to order another bowl for $3 more dollars. Guacamole - really good, but like the salsa, a tiny bowl of chips just was not adequate. Jarritos - my son is a huge fan of Jarritos, so he was happy. Chicken Burritto - good, not great and served Ala Carte. No Carb Beef - proclaimed best dish of the night by my wife, and she is picky, very picky. Chiliquilies - vegan dish, lacked flavor and was soupy. Tamale - vegan dish, hot as fire - way too hot. When I brought this up the owner said it was sometimes mild and sometimes hot, they could not control it. (No offer to refund even though I only took two bites) Black beans - heavenly good Rice - a tad bit dry, okay desert conditions dry. I think for me, getting excited about a restaurant that bills itself as Vegan and not delivering or accommodating just made this a bad experience for me. Again, my son and wife enjoyed it, but I really had one of the worst vegan food experiences I have ever had.
google avatar

Tonya C.

Yelp
food was amazing, really cozy atmosphere and great service! the enchiladas and the veggie tamale hit the spot.
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
More fast casual and good for lunch. The food was solid and looked appealing. You order at the counter but can sit and look at the menu first.
google avatar

Christine D.

Yelp
Hands down best Mexican food I have ever eaten. I started with the guacamole and chips. All very very fresh. I then had the pork tamale supreme. Absolutely delicious. The pork was so flavorful, and the spinach/veggies/beans fabulous. My friend had the Chile Rellenos, fantastic!
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Love that Tamaliza has vegan options. It's also nice that the vegan options are whole-foods plant-based, not a mock meat. Their vegan protein is mushroom, and normally I'm not a fan of mushroom (especially the texture), but the way these are cooked, I have no problems with them. I got the vegan enchiladas, and they were great. Very authentic flavors, spicy but not too spicy. The place itself is small and cute and charming, with colorful Mexican furniture and a nice outdoor seating area too. When we went by on Saturday afternoon they had live music outside. I definitely want to go back and try the vegan tacos and wet burrito too. Sorry no photos -- I was in a huge hurry to eat, lol.

Yelp
. I don't know how this place got 4.5 stars out of 1200 reviews . we went there today to get lunch, first off we noticed very high prices . We figured this would be all right if the food was really good. we sat there for half an hour. We never got our food. The restaurant was not very busy. I saw the food that did come out did not look like the photos. They did bring us the chips and salsa were crappy at best. I asked the lady for a refund because I don't have time to wait an hour for a burrito. She told me "wherever you go the food takes two hours to prepare you go " she told me "the reason we take longer is because we are all about integrity " what an incredible load of nonsense. The fact is, no offense I don't think these people are not fit to run a business . Nobody wants to wait an hour for mediocre hyped up Mexican food. Proof is in the results, and these people could not produce the results. All they did was waste our valuable time. We left with empty stomachs and went across the street to a better, cheaper, quicker Mexican food restaurant.

Yelp
Tamaliza is a female immigrant owned business in Sedona. Authentic, Mexican cuisine. Claudia, the owner, greeted us at the door. Everyone is handed a buzzer and they'll let you know when they are ready to take your order. I personally liked this method - I heard they can get pretty busy (with lines out the door) and this ensures orders are collected in a fair manner. This is traditional cuisine. Ingredients are fresh. Masa in the tamales was very flavorful. This food reminded me of home. My only qualm was the portion size - But then again, I had finished a 6 mile hike!

Tiffany D.

Yelp
This is the best Mexican food, I feel so good after eating it. It's very tasty and nourishing. The owner and staff are very kind and the service is always exceptional. The space is very charming and colorful. Would absolutely recommend!
