The 38 Best Restaurants in Honolulu, Hawai‘i | Eater

"Part poke counter, part okazuya (Japanese-style deli), and part plate lunch counter, Tanioka’s began in 1978 and continues to offer some of Hawai‘i’s favorite classic dishes and snacks, including fried chicken, ‘ahi patties, and poke. Tanioka’s specializes in fresh, locally-caught fish, and that’s reflected in the poke prices — and quality. Do yourself a favor and pick the lighter seasoned options to let the fish shine through, like the limu ‘ahi poke and alaea ‘ahi poke. Fans of Spam musubi should be sure to try the Goteborg musubi, a rice ball sandwiched between slices of German-style sausage (also made by Hormel, the maker of Spam). Tanioka’s isn’t just a keeper of traditions, though; the shop continues to innovate, like with its pastele tots: a take on pastele stew, Hawai‘i’s pork stew of Puerto Rican origin, ladled over tater tots. Know before you go: This is an okazuya, so you get in line, and order (or point) to what you want in the glass cases, and the workers pack it for you. The line moves fast — don’t be the one to hold it up." - Martha Cheng

The Best Poke in Honolulu: 11 Restaurants to Hit | Eater

"This beloved institution in central O‘ahu, dating back to 1978, is a mashup of an okazuya (old-school Japanese-style deli) and poke counter, which results in pairings like spicy ‘ahi and shrimp tempura poke bowls. It recently started offering food prepared to order, including tater tots topped with your choice of about a dozen varieties of poke, from wasabi miso tako to crunchy garlic ‘ahi. Despite its location outside of town, expect a line pretty much any time of day." - Martha Cheng

I stopped in as a bucket list item since I’d heard so much about Tanioka’s and saw POV Husband from social media went here recently. I got there just after opening on a Thursday and it was a quick visit. The staff is awesome and it helped that I reviewed their menu online and had a list. I would very highly recommend doing this, it’s a small place and having your order in hand before you arrive keeps you moving quickly so you don’t hold up the other customers. The staff are absolute rock stars at working together to put your order together and get you checked out and on your way. I picked up the Volcano Alae Ahi, Spicy Ahi, and Wasabi Miso Tako poke and all were fresh and tasty. I also picked up the corned beef hash patty, shrimp stick, and the regular fried chicken, garlic fried chicken, and the Mochiko chicken. The corned beef has patty is a little pillow of happiness for anyone who likes corned beef hash. The fried chicken were all good but, the Mochiko chicken is just out of this world tasty goodness. I also ordered the shrimp stick with sauce on the side and if you like shrimp tempura this is a must with the lighter sauce poured over it. This was my first time to Tanioka’s so I went a bit overboard to try a range of items but it was such a great experience. This would be a perfect place to stop either on the way back from a morning beach visit or on the way to an early afternoon beach visit with lunch or picnic meet up. Get there early, be patient and drive with aloha on Farrington and in the parking lot. Mind the spaces that are reserved for people who live in the area and other businesses, be patient, and enjoy! Thank you again to the awesome staff for making it such an easy visit!

Tanioka’s is a very busy shop. There’s a bit of a queue but it was worth it. Poke bowls are fresh and amazingly good. Sushi and musubis are very tasty and fresh. They have other food on the menu such as karaage, tonkatsu, etc. Price is reasonable. Parking is available and xars come and go. Overall, will definitely be back and this is a go to lunch for me.

Google
Best large food platter I ever got on the islands. Everything was ono. The fried noodles were not overly greasy just right. The Spam musubi was tasty the spam was tender. The chicken was incredible. Definitely a must try platter spot for your event needs.

Got a selection of fried items. Would definitely be better fried on the spot or air-fried again at home. Poi mochi - 4.25 stars My favourite. Crisp on the outside and chewy inside. Similar to a deep fried glutinous rice sesame ball (jin dui). Salmon patty - 3.75 stars Ahi patty - 3.75 stars Jumbo shrimp - 3.5 stars Mochiko chicken - 3.5 stars Sweet, good flavour. Wish it were fried again. Shiso musubi - 3.75 stars Good fragrant floral flavour. Bit too salty for me. Konbu musubi - 3.5 stars Bit too salty for me. Spicy musubi - 3 stars Too salty for me. Lumpia - 2 stars

Great experience. Tempura shrimp was my favorite. Fast service. They run out so get there early.

I grew up on Tanioka's and I realize it's probably a sourcing issue but I'm a super simple person. Only thing I need to make me happy is a pound of limu poke (although I'll gladly take more). And the poke I got recently is not anything like the past. Not even like the past 5 years or so. Something has gone terribly wrong in that department. OR maybe it was just a really bad day/week I don't know. All I know is that's all I go for so that's all I can rate them on. I also tried another poke that I didn't care for as well (I also bought a lb of that) but I never tried that one before so I'm not going to add that one in my rating scale cause that's not fair. So the 3 stars is just because of how good it used to be to the batch I just got, that's all. Otherwise, I'm gonna go again some day and hopefully I get better luck next time but with prices being what they are and the fact and a pound of poke is not even two meals for me it will take me a while.

Google
I wish I'd known about this place years ago! The spicy ahi poke bowl was fantastic! Its a small place with no seating and a long line, but it's well worth the wait. I wanted to try so much more, but wasn't very hungry. Everything there looked delicious!

Google
It’s not the Tanioka’s that I remembered growing up. All the poke is overly salty, and the flavors are not very dynamic. The fish is fresh, but you can’t even taste the fish. I also ordered tako karage, lumpia and jumbo shrimp. I asked for sauce for the tako and lumpia and they said that it would be an additional $1.00 for a small container of sauce for each. I have never gone to any local establishment where they did not give sauce for the lumpia or karage free of charge. And the lumpia sauce is almost half the price of one lumpia. I almost laughed out loud when they told me that but I didn’t want to take it out on the workers because they don’t make these decisions. Plus, the lines are really long because tourist don’t know any better. You can take my review with a grain of salt. Literally 😳

Yelp
Tanioka's hands down one the best place for local food. Their lines are long for a reason. Although their lines are long it's pretty efficient and goes by pretty fast. Place is a casual atmosphere. My go to food there is the spicy ahi tempura bowl and the spam musubi.

Yelp
I haven't been to tanikoa's in YEARS. Tell me why their prices went up from 25 to 35/lb on poke? That's crazy to me. I've been craving for Taniokas and wanted quality poke before heading out to the beach. There is always a line at tanioka's but it goes fairly fast. They have so much things in there now from apparel, merch, drinks, sherbet, poke, okazuya & plate lunches. I needed to stay focus and get what I came for which is poke and some ahi patties. Here's a few things I got: Spicy ahi on sushi rice (5/5) - The last time I had this I was disappointed but for some reason it was soo good this time around! Spicy ahi by the lb (2/5) - the fish was fresh but it was extremely salty... not sure why :( Ahi limu & onion by the lb (3/5) - Super fresh fish but needed more flavor. I had to add shoyu on it. Ahi patties (5/5) - THIS WAS SOOO GOOD! Honestly would come back just for this. Garlic chicken (5/5) - how do they manage to keep it crispy but still have so much flavor?? Spam Musubi (5/5) - something about the sauce in their Musubi that's soo good. I remember like back in the day! Service was quick since they do have a lot of employees working. I honestly feel like you can get good poke anywhere else but with the fleshness & quality, I don't know anywhere who has it this fresh. I would come back mainly for their food items.

Yelp
@fortunefoodfinds: "This spread is SHRIMP-LY BU-TIFUL! A Spicy Ahi Tempura Bowl, Kimchi Kalbi Tots, Jumbo Shrimp Sticks, Garlic Chicken, n' Lumpia from TANIOKA'S SEAFOODS & CATERING in Waipahu. You can find poke, bentos, plates, okazuya items, n' so much more. When you want it all, be sure to stop by their store! Fun Fact: we chose Tanioka's as our caterer for our wedding! Highly recommend." Staff: friendly Interior: follow the line, merchandise available for purchase Exterior: next to 7-eleven, usually a line outside Wait time: 20-35 mins Parking: lot Overall comments: always a line going out the door. I like the variety of food options n' they got desserts. The spicy ahi tempura bowl is great when you want both n' there's something for everyone with their okazuya. Note that the kimchi kalbi tots are made to order so expect a 15-20 min wait, but it's worth the tender n' tasty boneless kalbi. They catered our wedding n' I couldn't have been happier with the food n' service. Def a a staple for local ono grindz!

Yelp
Wow, it was our first time at the original Waipahu location (we've only been to the temporary Ala Moana location years ago) and it was super organized! Parking is tight, but signs are clear as to where you can park for Tanioka's or nearby businesses. The line was out the door at 11 am, but there's a security guard to help at the entrance. Once inside, you can shop for re-usable shopping bags and apparel, then the line progresses to the refrigerated section for desserts and sashimi, then onto the poke section, ready made bento, the okazuya individual items where you place your items between rubber dividers like at the supermarket, and finally on to the cash register. It's a tight squeeze inside, but that's a part of the appeal. The bento are very reasonably priced and packed with delicious food. We'll definitely be back and will try to get there earlier.

Yelp
Go early!! We arrived a few minutes before posted open time of 9am & the parking lot was already busy. Great set up. Walk in, check out the refrigerated items, view the poke (order some!), check out the ready to go bentos & okazuya. Put it all on the counter as you walk along & someone will check you out at the end. Friendly service, they make the line move but not in a pushy way. Bentos are great for the beach! A few different varieties. We chose 2 different types, both were filling & plentiful. A bit on the pricier side compared to other places, but worth it IMO.

Yelp
Absolutely best maki rolls on the island! Everytime we come back to Hawaii, I need to stop by Tanioka's for their poke and maki rolls. The sushi rice is on point!! The line moves quickly and the options are extensive! It definitely adds up as we want to try a bit of everything. Our lunch ended up being $100 for a family of 4. Garlic chicken is always a must and the garlic ahi poke is also a fav.
google avatar

James L.

Yelp
This was the first stop I went to after landing in HND airport. The miso butterfish is a must everytime I'm visiting Hawaii. I got just the fish itself and 1 order comes with 2 pieces. I ended up getting 2 orders and a jumbo shrimp stick. There's always a line here but if you want the butterfish, you have to order it at the cashier.

Yelp
Tanioka's was one of our favorite spots while we stayed in West Oahu! The line is long as the day goes on, but moves quickly. We tried the marlin poke, furikake salmon, spicy ahi, limu ahi, and crunchy garlic ahi! All were delicious, but the furikake salmon was a surprising favorite for me. We also had some of their spam musubi, kahlua pork, and mochiko chicken. You can get the poke bowl orders going first and then grab any of the hot deli items or ask for the fried foods after getting the poke and before paying. They do offer sushi rice for poke bowls and it's a game changer so remember to ask for that! The shop is homey and full of locals and the staff are all warm. We went twice on our trip and it might seem strange getting poke for breakfast, but it's so fresh in the morning when the shop opens!! The lot is a little tight for parking but there should be more spots around the corner and down the alley by 7-11!

Yelp
This was our first time at the original location, my family remembers the temporary location at Ala Moana Center, years ago. They're a great okazuya. The service is great, but be aware of the lunchtime crowd. The line was very long, but was worth it for the food. I would go here again, or Honolulu Kitchen. I never tried the Filipino food place Bebot, next to Tanioka's. The store has many merchandise such as t-shirts and bags.

Yelp
The Legendary local lunch spot... Tanioka's! Where the ono grinds are fire, line wraps around da building and parking... what's dat?! Tourists don't generally come here or know about this place. It's mostly locals... place is out of the way and parking is almost non existent. Be prepared for a good 20 min wait...that is on "slow" day. lol Back in the day, Tanioka's was more of a blue collar, working class wahi that churned out some ono value grinds. I haven't been here in ages. Looks like the place got an upgrade, not grimy or run down like before. They even sell merchandise now! Cray Cray! Food is still Ono, plenty of Poké and other grinds to choose from. Prices are through the roof now...damn food inflation. Not a lot of "value" anymore. The Mochiko Chicken is still one of my favorites from here... Broke da mouth kine.

Yelp
Completely forgetable. I hate places that are over hyped and taste weak. Nothing special here, fried food taste like KFC or any other fried food fast food. Poke taste like any other poke we've ever had. Again, nothing special, overly hyped, long line, and no place to sit and eat - we ate it in the car. Will not return.
google avatar

Kimberly L.

Yelp
It's been a long time since we've been back to Oʻahu, and we had to return to our favorite place for poke--and it did not disappoint! We got there early, so parking was easy and the line wasn't too long. The poke was just as amazing as we remembered--so fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. Truly some of the best on the island. We also picked up one of their totes as a little memento to take home with us--such a fun keepsake from a place we love. If you're visiting Oʻahu, this spot is a must-try.

Yelp
This is a follow up to my Easter order. Darn I forgot to post food photos but the buffet was delicious -- everything I expect from Tanioka. We received lots of compliments re our buffet!l We started with an Easter egg hunt (100 plastic egg that I filled the prior night), colored 2 flats of eggs from Eggs Hawaii (both coloring and eating were great), had lunch, and celebrated my grandson's birthday --all in one swoop! Lunch from Tanioka and eggs from Eggs Hawaii were the most icing on the cake!

Yelp
Update on Tanioka's Seafood today I was in the area and seen there was no line for Tanioka's . Hmmm it's Super Bowl Sunday there's no way so I stopped not for Super Bowl party poke or pupu's just for me to eat a snack like a Musubi cone sushi. I should have figured it out , of course no line they were all sold out of everything . Only a very few items left so I ordered only lumpia and shumai lol . Support local

Yelp
Long time island favorite Tanioka's in Waipahu. Locally owned and operated. From the awesome assortment of fresh poke to the wonderfully delicious assortment of Okazu. There may be a long line but the staff and management are always fast and friendly. Lined move very quickly. They cater to parties large and small. Famous for their Fried Chicken, Fish Patties, and more. A definite must try is their Spicy Ahi Tempura Bowl They were Open on the 4th of July. We stopped by to pick up some lunch before heading out for family time.

Yelp
Outstanding. Absolutely outstanding. Found this place on TikTok before it's brief shutdown, and heard it was the best poke on the island. I'm a huge fan of foodland so I was already bias before we went. The place was next to a 7 eleven so I knew it was either going to be fire or awful. It's a humble spot, the service is fine, the place itself isn't somewhere you'd stay and eat but none of that really matters. The food is 10/10! Please get the crunchy garlic poke. I've eaten my weight in poke and this is easily the best I've ever had. My girlfriend agreed which is RARE. Her praise comes about as often as a handshake on great British baking show. I digress.. just go here. Get the crunchy garlic.

Ng C.

Yelp
If I could rate 0 star I would. Really disappointing experience. The white guy who scoops the poke was extremely rude. The first time, he told us we had to separate the shoyu ahi tuna into a tiny bowl with the rice in another container. The second time, he rudely said this would be the last time he'd "help" by putting poke with rice. To make it worse, the shoyu ahi wasn't even marinated -- just plain raw ahi with onions, and the sauce thrown on the side. It tasted terrible. My husband also ordered the garlic chicken, and it actually came with a feather still on it even though it was fried. Totally unacceptable. We will not be coming back. Rude service, poor quality food, and definitely not worth it.
google avatar

Lloyd C.

Yelp
Tradition for us...fly into Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, pick up the rental car and then drive directly to Tanioka's! It was crowded for a Saturday, but that why they are so good and popular! Cone Sushi, Salmon Furikake, Limu Ahi, Konbu musubi, spam musubi are so good! Most of their items are good, so you can't really go wrong. We normally get the Chicken Mochiko. But first time trying the Garlic Chicken. Flavorful, garlicky, and crispy. This was good! Ume Musubi - simple, traditional, and comforting. The service is always welcoming, helpful, polite, and fast. They also had a popup for Almond Tree Toffee. We bought some kona coffee toffee.
google avatar

Sach T.

Yelp
Ordered our usual fish patties, garlic chicken, musubi and cone sushi. I think the fish patty has been priced at $3.95 for a while but it may be a little thinner so instead of raising the price, you get less fish? Not sure but it seems that way to me. It's still tasty so I'll keep coming back. Prices go up everywhere so this place is no different but I was surprised that their poke is now $35.95 a pound! I guess I'm used to buying poke from other places that's cheaper.

Yelp
My friend and I went on a kayak adventure together, but before we went, we stopped by Taniokas for some food to pack for our journey. My friend never really had the chance to try this spot until I brought them there, and now they are also in love with the food! My family and I have been regulars at Taniokas for decades. This is one of our favorite spots to grab something quick before heading out to the beach, to school, fieldtrips, or home. Now that I come back home every so often, this is a definite go-to spot everytime I visit. They sell a variety of local favorites, such as poke, family bentos, poi, musubis, and mochikochicken! - * Sesame Tako Poke * Spicy Ahi Poke Bowl * Mochiko Chicken * Garlic Chicken * Edamame * Spam Musubis * Bento * Ahi Fish Cake - I personally think this spot has the BEST sesame tako (octopus) poke on the islands, as I tend to eat almost 2lb worth in one sitting everytime I go lol. I love almost everything they sell, and this spot is a local favorite amongst the community. They even sell cute merch, such as shirts, bucket hats, culinary items, and even a collab section with In4mation! Service is always great everytime I have gone, as they are friendly, fast, and efficient.
google avatar

Yelp
Tanioka's is a high quality locals spot. Plenty of parking in the lot out front. Be prepared to wait in line to order. Come here for the poke, but also stay for the local/okazu/Hawaii-style goodies, nostalgic flavors, and friendly staff! When you walk in, be prepared to snake in line around the cute shirts, coolers, and other merch while you check out the ono looking food displayed in the many cases. Drinks are up first, I always go for Harder's! There are some desserts and sushi/musubi options, tons of fried goodies (garlic chicken was bomb), fried rice, noodles, and of course the poke counter. Yesterday, I had the crunchy garlic ahi poke. Honestly, it wasn't crunchy since it's covered in sauce, but the freshness of the fish makes up for pretty much anything and the poke was still good. I think next time I would go back to the classic shoyu ahi myself. Fried foods galore - 3 kinds of fried chicken, ika, shumai, shrimp sticks, fried ahi musubis (sounds/looks better than I thought it tasted, it was a miss for me), lumpia, shrimp tempura, ahi patties and so much more! I had a hard time choosing which ones to grab for just one person! Ended up with the garlic chicken, the ahi roll and an impulse buy - a grilled ginger scallion tofu -- packed with flavor! Always good grinds if you're in Waipahu!
google avatar

Sheila E.

Yelp
Really good garlic chicken. Stayed crispy and has a good sweet garlic flavor. For the poke, the limu poke was my favorite followed by marlin poke then volcano then the hot alae poke (this one was kind of sweet and spicy) They had some cute novelty items for sale but it's definitely not a place you can take your time to shop since it's a tight space and there's always a line. I'll be back!
google avatar

Sandra X.

Yelp
I shared a large ahi poke bowl with a friend for $23.95 (you can choose 2 types of poke). The poke was incredibly fresh and high quality--the kind that's so soft and fresh it almost melts in your mouth. For my 2 choices, I went with the crunchy garlic ahi and the volcano alae ahi. While the fish was excellent, flavor-wise, the poke wasn't as bold as I'm used to from other places. There wasn't much crunch in the crunchy garlic ahi or spiciness in the volcano alae ahi, but I'm someone who loooves bold flavors and spice. I think you're paying more for the exceptional freshness of the fish here than for heavily seasoned poke. Beyond the poke, there's a selection of à la carte items you can add to your order. I tried the vegetable tempura, garlic chicken, corned beef hash, lumpia, and poi mochi. Vegetable Tempura: I absolutely loved this! Despite being deep-fried, it was surprisingly light. The sweet potato pieces in the tempura were a standout and added a nice sweetness to the dish. Garlic Chicken: My friend raved about this, but the ones we got were a bit dry and not very crispy this time. Must've been an off day for them. Corned Beef Hash & Lumpia: Both were good but nothing particularly special. Poi Mochi: This was very dense, crunchy, and not overly sweet. It's a heavy snack, but perfect if you're craving a filling dessert. The line here moves super fast, and the workers are quick too--you better know what you want by the time you get to the counter! It's a popular spot with locals, so they work hard to keep things moving and avoid long waits. It's a grab-and-go spot--no seating indoors. They also have a bunch of cute merch for sale, like Eden in Love x Tanioka's tote bags and lunch bags with Hawaii-themed prints. It's a fun touch and a great way to take a piece of the experience home with you.

Yelp
Busy busy busy is what this place is haha. There was a line outside on a Friday morning, and even longer lines when lunch hour was approaching! Note: If you order online, make sure it's for the day and time you want. I tried to place an online order but the order wouldn't be ready till 2 days later lol so that's why I had to go in in person to order my food! However, the line moved at a decent speed. I think I waited for maybe 20 mins? Once I got to the counter, the service was very quick as there were a lot of staff working together for different section of the counter. What should you get? That's the big question as there are so so many things to choose from. I highly recommend their shrimp stick with sauce (without sauce would be fine too) as that was one of the most delicious shrimp thing I've had! You won't regret it. For the poke, I loved their furikake salmon and the ahi limu. The fish was fatty and smooth without the chewy tendons. Both flavors were seasoned well without being too salty. However, I would avoid their wasabi miso tako (octopus) and their sesame tako as well. They're both overly sweet that they tasted kind of disgusting. The tako also wasn't very tender. I couldn't finish it. The is a place where locals and tourists go which explains why it's so busy! It's definitely NOT a hype. It's legit. If you're in Waipahu, do yourself a favor and give it a shot if you haven't tried it yet!

Yelp
Sad to see that such a popular poke place with I'm sure high connections with fisherman/auctions is charging a ridiculous $36/lb for all poke!!! It's sad what you're doing to our local people of Hawaii! Other competitors with fresh poke don't even charge this much! Rethink what you are doing please. Otherwise service is good, majority of the poke and food tastes good!
google avatar

Alyssa T.

Yelp
One of the best places to go if you're looking for fresh fish and poke. There's plenty of parking available, but it can get very crowded at times. The inside is smaller and there are no tables as it's meant for you to order and take your food to go. The fish is extremely fresh and is definitely some of the best on the island. There are many different options for bowls and combinations on the menu. Daily specials and hot food are also available. I've loved everything that I've tried so far and I can't wait to try more of the foods that they offer.
google avatar

Karen T.

Yelp
I tried the bacon wrapped laulau plate. Bacon wrapped around the meat inside the laulau. Taste wise it was pretty good but a little dry. I think it was a fluke cause their food is usually on point. The plate came with rice, Lomi salmon and dessert. It was a little later in the day and they ran out of Lomi salmon. That's ok, I was just grateful they had food left and I got an extra dessert. That sweet potato tart was so worth missing out on the Lomi salmon! They guys were all great and friendly as usual no matter how crowded it was!

Yelp
Food was solid, but the service left a lot to be desired. Starting with the good: The poke was definitely a highlight. The spicy ahi and sesame tako were both packed with flavor-seriously smackin'. The marinated crab, on the other hand, was just okay. I personally think Alicia's and Timura's do a better job with more bold, flavorful marination. The limu poke was fresh and light, which some might enjoy, but I prefer something with a stronger punch. We also tried the garlic fried chicken rice plate. The chicken itself was excellent-crispy with a slightly sweet glaze that hit just right. All the musubi we ordered were great too, well-balanced and satisfying with just the right amount of rice to spam ratio. Now for the not-so-great part: the service. I get that popular spots like this can be hit or miss with service, but today was a definite miss. It felt like the staff had become a bit jaded by the hype, and it showed. Here's what happened: I placed an order for the garlic fried chicken plate with one staff member who was friendly and told me they were out but could make more in 10 minutes. Cool, I agreed. Then I got to the cashier-different person-and had to explain my order all over again because nothing had been communicated. The cashier seemed annoyed and didn't offer a warm interaction at all. He took my payment, told me to wait outside, and didn't give me a receipt. After waiting 20 minutes in the midday heat (on top of the 20-minute line I had already stood in), a third staff member came out with only the chicken-no rice plate. I told him I had ordered the plate lunch, and instead of just fixing it, he asked for my receipt like I was making it up. I said that I never received one, and he gave me a side-eye before walking off, clearly frustrated. Eventually, I got the full order, but the entire experience left a bad taste. Final thoughts: The food is good, but food alone doesn't carry an experience. The staff needs to work better as a team and communicate with each other-and treat paying customers with a bit more courtesy. It's the kind of service I've never encountered anywhere else in Hawaii, and not in a good way.

Yelp
I've always liked Tanioka's. The service with each person I spoke were friendly, helpful and it makes you want to order again but when you bite into the food! Hands down! It was delicious! Drove up to the pick up. A young man was friendly checked in and loaded my car. Excellent service with each individual.

Yelp
When I am in close proximity to Tanioka's my car has a mind of it's own. Must get some of that aw we some poké and okazuya. Was planning my day which took me to Waipahu. Was considering a visit to Tanioka's. And then I saw on IG Chef Sam Choy comment how Tanioka's had the best poke... I took it as a sign; a sign I would again be visiting the long established Tanioka's later today. Tanioka's your so smart. Even before one gets to the poke counter, you gotta pass by the souveniers, the dessert display case, the containers of sushi and bentos. This is what I purchased this time: A container of cone sushi: super tasty. Yes, wetter than most... the way I like it. Even overnight in fridge and the pieces stay moist and delicious. A container of okinawan sweet potato haupia dessert. Not something I think of getting here yet so happy I did. Amazing taste. Nice crisp and taste on the crust. Possibly THE BEST version of this dish I have ever had! Poke, yes poke. Tofu poke ($7.99/lb) and limu ahi poke ($34.99/lb). It's not cheap ($5 more per pound over my other favorite @ Tamura's) but ohh soo good! Super fresh. Super tasty. Assorted okazuya: hash patty, tamago dashi, mochiko chicken, chow fun, tofu. I thought I ordered an ahi patty but did not find it in the overflowing box. Gives me an excuse to go back! And some smoked tako for future consumption. I know why I try not to come here too often now. After cueing up in their Disney amusement park type line, I want to buy plenty to make my visit worth the wait and anticipation. And walk away with more than I ever plan to buy. Happens everytime. What? "How did I spend that much, again?!" I muttered. Cashier ringing me up chuckled when he heard my gasp and said, "Dat's easy aunty in dis place. So much goodness here!" And yes young man... ask me how many chopsticks I need and we will pretend I'm going to share any of this goodness with anyone... "four chopsticks please (when we both know... only one of those set of chopsticks is going to be used!). Food for days. Tanioka's the place I find difficult exercising any self control. See you next week! Hahah.

Yelp
Love taniokas! They have such great food and are often busy. Whenever I'm In Waipahu I like picking up food from here. They have great crunchy garlic poke which is my favorite. I also like their garlic chicken, shrimp roll and musubis. The last time I went though, they charged me extra for a couple items which I did not receive and the prices have increased quite a bit.

Yelp
Had the Hawaiian plate w/ shoyu poke, ahi patties, and sweet potato haupia pie for about $40. Can be small kine expensive but still worth it for the fresh poke. Tanioka's no ka 'oi

Yelp
Not quite the Taniokas I remember but still good. Come here whenever we're in Oahu. Still have to wait in line for it which is good to see.. but it didn't blow us away as usual. Portions got smaller (they kind of skimp out on the fish portions now). Flavors changed, fish either isn't as fresh or they are oversalting the fish now. The limu especially was just too salty this time and lackluster! It was still pretty good but kind of bummed out about the change! But if you come by GET THE SHRIMP STICK haha that is one thing that has not changed.

Yelp
LOVE THIS PLACE. We use to live in Waipahu and now we live in the mainland, we still make sure to come back to Tanioka's when we visit. The prices have gone up but that's expected. The quality of food hasn't changed, it's always been the best of the best. I've been recently impressed with their hot foods section and their pre-made bento boxes. Everyone is friendly and works fast. The place is always clean and organized. It's such an amazing local business!

Yelp
Best poke I had on the island and in my entire life. The poke is so fresh it literally melts in your mouth. I believe we tried the spicy ahi, shoyu ahi, and the limu. All incredibly flavorful but do not overpower the freshness and deliciousness of the seafood. Wow. This poke truly captures the essence of the island in bite size pieces. I was on cloud 9 enjoying this delicacy on the balcony of our hotel in the middle of Honolulu. I savored every single bite. The amount of happiness and gratitude I felt during this meal was superior. Tanioka's knows what they are doing and should not be missed when visiting this beautiful island. Definitely do yourself a favor and go support this family owned establishment with friendly service. You will surely not be disappointed.

Yelp
Late in the day and I only got chow funn and a vegetable tempura. But omg, that vegetable tempura was so good! It had broccoli, carrot, onion and purple potato. The broccoli is what made me give it 5 stars!

Yelp
Every time we visit Oahu we try to calculate the max amount of times we can visit Tanioka's- is there time after the airport, after snorkeling, before this or after that? It's always packed and for good reason. Like moves quickly though! Get there early because stuff sells out! No seating inside, so we usually scarf down our food in the car as soon as we leave the shop. They have lots of cute merchandise to browse through while you're waiting- we've gotten some shirts and cute Sanrio x Tanioka tote bags in the past. On this last visit we splurged and spent probably $80 on poke and their other ready to go items. We thought we had severely over ordered for two, but after a little bit in the car (and some involuntary seat slapping from the food being so good), we somehow finished it all. And went back in for another large poke bowl. Our favorites are the marlin and furikake salmon. Their fried chicken and lumpia are crispy outside and juicy inside, and ahi patties and musubis are great too!

Yelp
It has become more disappointing to pick up food at Tanioka's. Main reasons are unnecessary (fraudulent) price increases and "shrinkflation." The Crispy Ahi is smaller and cost about a dollar more, and pieces of garlic chicken are small too. I also noticed in my fried noodles order, there were fewer bean sprouts. I was told that If I wanted more bean sprouts I would have to pay extra, Really?! Take-out is getting ridiculous, that's why my family will be eating where there's specials at Gyotaku, Chili's and even Ruby Tuesday's.

Yelp
Hands down, our new favorite poke spot! We ordered the crunchy garlic ahi which was a bit salty but so much flavor. I would absolutely order again. This flavor was unreal! We also tried the Miso Butterfish which was top tier quality. It was better than I've had at most restaurants. We also tried the lumpia and the mochiko chicken. I would love to try their other pokes next time I'm on the island. Be prepared for a line out of the doors when coming here as there's a little wait.

Yelp
Wife and enjoy selection of that we decided for our light lunch of cone sushi, mamaki sushi rolles, vegetable tempura, namasu, shrimp tempura, and uber pudding cake, in clean and organized sales counter, and well organized sales working together as a team!

Yelp
Come for the Poke! The poke selection is incredible with tons of different ahi poke, but don't sleep on the tako, crab, mussels, and marlin. The seafood is so fresh and flavorful. Yeah, there's always a line, but that's only because the food is so damn good. The staff is friendly and they do their best to get through orders quickly. They also have a number of hot items and lunch specials/mix plates which offer pretty good value both for the quality and quantity of food. Definitely worth a stop for some good eats!

Yelp
Long time favorite and where locals go to get your take on it and poke. Then why a 3*....... I'd typically say 4* (5* if I catered hot and fresh food) but today looking at this from an outsiders perspective. Locals know a "quick" stop for food here is never a quick stop, haha. Because it's such a popular spot, lines are usually out the door and you can expect 20-30+ minutes waiting. This is no knock at their staff though, as the small place is always staffed with an army of workers who are always polite and helpful. The poke quality is top notch and always fresh with many different flavor options....... The price though....... woooof $35+ bucks a pound including having to pay for the shoyu, green onions, onions, etc at that clip. The okazuya style food ordering always offers a tons of great options. For the most part all of the food I've tried is always delicious. Some of my favorites are the ahi/salmon Pattie, garlic & mochiko chicken, shoyu pork, and musubis. The issue I have........is because it's okazuya style, the food is typically cold. You can expect to pay around $15-20+ bucks for a plate of food. There are fresh and hot plate options, however I have never ordered one, maybe I should try next time. All and all I will definitely be back....... Even though I know price is a premium, okazuya food willl be cold, and know I'll have to wait before I get my food to curb my Taniokas craving, hahaha.

Yelp
Tanioka's is an amazing local poke shop serving up some fresh seafood and plate lunches. As mentioned before, I previously rated this place a 4/5 for long wait times and smaller portion sizing. Since then, I believe they've done better with their portions! I come here about once every other week, and I always get their spicy ahi tempura bowls with sushi rice. The portions I've got the most recent times were hefty. Lots of poke. Lots of tempura. Making me a happy girl! Yes, the lines are/have been/will always be long. But they do seem to be hustling with the small space they have. I've grown to appreciate this place for their high quality poke!

Yelp
Always go back for seconds when it's this Maika'i loa! Upon my return from a vacation in Japan on the 29th. of June 2025. Tanioka's was where I had my first meal-Ahi/Taco poke bowl, 'Ono!

Yelp
Hands down the best poke we had in Hawaii. The fish was so soft and flavorful and they had plenty of different flavors to choose from. I got the limu ahi and crunchy garlic. I also love they give you the option to choose sushi rice as well. Definitely check out Tanioka's if you're craving some good authentic poke

Yelp
Been supporting taniokas ever since ever since! Legit be late for work because we would never know how long the line is. Then scarf while on the way to work because everyone going know why you was late I miss the suman! They no longer have the suman I'm not a sweet potato dessert kinda gal but it's ok. Crust is a hit or miss sometimes it's sweet. Sometimes it's hard. Chicken is best when fresh same as their fried mussel poke. My go too is onion poke even though I don't eat the onion lol. Has the most flavor. The fish cake is YUM! And cannot forget the maki sushi

Yelp
Amazing fresh poke bowls! Line is long but trust me when I say their poke is worth the wait. Spam Musubi was great! Mochiko Chicken seasoning has a sweet and garlic kick to it. It's more chewy than crunchy compared to fried chicken and it is as a bit cold already too. I also had tempura shrimp and I was a bit disappointed that it was also cold already. I would come back for the poke and musubi. Their Poke is worth the 4 stars.

Yelp
Bucket list spot that I had grown up going to as a kid with my dad, but never ate on my own as an adult. It did not disappoint. There's always a line, and this usually causes me not to stop by. But today I was determined and realized the line moved quickly and efficiently. I learned that there's actually an advantage to the line. It gives you time to look at all the selections and devise a plan for ordering. Everything looks so good that you're tempted to order it all, I came close. While they're famous for their seafood and musubi, everything is just as good. I got 8 different pokes, 4 different musubi types, shrimp tempura, mochiko chicken, garlic chicken, lumpia, cone sushi, chow fun and ahi patties. It's such a fun and lively place, and although they try to get you out quickly, they are friendly and helpful. I won't wait so long next time and hope to be back the next time I'm on Oahu.
