The 26 Best Restaurants In São Paulo - São Paulo - The Infatuation

"In São Paulo, eating cross-legged on a tatami mat is as normal as drinking beer on a plastic table on the street. Tanuki, in Vila Madalena, is a particularly lovely old-school Japanese spot. This unfussy, wood-paneled restaurant offers carefully prepared sushi at reasonable prices, with a huge range of fish and rolls to choose from. The set menus are an economical way to get a bit of everything, but be sure to get the scallop if it's available. A couple of cooked dishes are great for rounding out the meal, especially the sukiyaki, a rich vegetable and meat stew that cooks, bubbling, on the table." - tome morrissy swan

Had a wonderful experience here. There’s bartender spoke perfect English and helped us navigate our dinner—even asking the chef to select fish we’d most enjoy in our entrees. Great price. Great service. The most delicious sushi!

The service is bad. They aren’t friendly and are clueless about what to recommend. The prices are extremely expensive here. Sushi is fresh and good. Just make sure you know what you like to order.

A more traditional Japanese sushi spot with a cozy vibe - everything was delicious! The food was incredibly fresh, and the gyoza was spectacular! Definitely a must-try, we loved it.

Low-key Japanese restaurant serving a great value lunch deal. Attentive service and nice ambiance. Exactly what I was looking for from a Sampa sushi bar!

This place is incredible! It serves truly traditional and authentic Japanese food, which is rare to find—around the world. This isn’t your typical Brazilian sushi with cream cheese; it’s the real deal. The fish quality is exceptional—super fresh and flavorful. The miso soup is probably the best I’ve had in São Paulo. Although it’s a bit pricey, it’s well worth it, especially compared to similar places in other large cities. Their lunch specials are great and varied every day, with bento boxes that include sashimi, side salad, soup, and preserved vegetables. Way better than alot of bento boxes i’ve had around the world. Definitely one of my favorite Japanese spots in São Paulo and Brazil

Yelp
Authentic and with good deals for lunch, plus it is in a less chaotic part of Vila Madalena

Yelp
This is the best sushi restaurant that must exist outside of Japan. In a word, tonight's meal was simply sublime. This neighborhood spot in Vila Madalena doesn't look like much from the outside, and its modest interior also might not suggest the amazing fish that awaits, but let it be known, Tanuki is the best I've ever had. We saddled up to the sushi bar while 4 expert sushi makers handled each fish with delicate care; I loved getting a front row seat to the beautiful display of filets. We ordered sake, miso soups (drink it from the bowl, not with a spoon), and the Combinado de Sushi e Sashimi Individual platter (despite having no idea what fish would arrive, we found the order to be spot on). 18 pieces came out of which 10 were sashimi (mixed between salmon, tuna and another fish), 4 nigiri (salmon, tuna and a white fish), and 4 uramaki (salmon on the inside and rice on the outside with sesame seeds). After our eyes rolled back into our skulls (from being so blown away by the first bite), we added another 8 uramaki rolls (tuna) to the order. If you're looking for something safe, you should just copy our order and if you don't speak Portuguese, ask for the English menu! The fish was so freaking fresh it didn't have that fishy taste you often associate with, well, fish. It was tremendous. I also don't typically like salmon and I managed to scarf down every piece that was presented to me... and then want more. Other things to note: this place is small so might not be best for a large group (or perhaps call ahead) and we arrived without reservations and were easily able to grab 2 seats at the bar around 8:30pm. As for the meal, Jiro, you have your work cut out for you!

Yelp
Good service and fresh sushi/sashimi. English menus and good selection of beers. Atmosphere between quiet and noisy. Close quarters to eat so not really too intimate but nice for a first date or to carry your SO. One desert is okay to split recommend the papaya cream, very traditional and good with liquor.

Yelp
Intimate and authentic Japanese restaurant in Vila Madalena. One of my go-to places to eat. Excellent sushi and hot dishes. The price is right, too!

Yelp
Favorite sushi restaurant I've found in Sao Paulo. Everything I've ordered here has been delicious. The salmao sashimi is always buttery. The lobster special (when offered) is cooked to perfection and seasoned just right. And don't miss out on the tempura! Dinner leans toward the pricey side, but go for lunch. The prato do dia typically includes sashimi, maki rolls, grilled fish, soup, rice, salad and fruit for dessert all for only for 33R. Go upstairs for traditional "sit on a pillow" japanese dining.

Yelp
Great place.. Food is awesome, however it is very small.. Yet the service feels like Rio or Bahia -slow- Sr. Francisco is a great,.. Anyway overall it's a cool experience.. Highly recommended place
