What Is Fun? America’s Restaurants Have the Answer - Eater

"Consider also the first iteration of the extremely successful Tao, which opened on 58th Street [in NYC] in 2000. Opened in a former movie theater, it was almost as large as a street block, had multiple levels, and a 16-foot gilt Buddha sculpture as the focal point of its soaring interior." - Bettina Makalintal

5 Stars Incredible Experience! We called about ten minutes before arriving to make a reservation, and they were incredibly accommodating. The food was unbelievably fresh and delicious every bite was perfect. But what truly set the night apart was our waitress, Precious. Our waitress was phenomenal from start to finish. Warm, professional, and so genuinely kind she didn’t just serve us, she made the entire experience shine. She complimented the food with such pride, also the restaurant staff helped us switch tables when my date requested it without hesitation, and was just incredibly accommodating every step of the way. She even vibed with my date in the best possible way easygoing, friendly, and full of good energy. We ended up ordering way more than planned just because the whole experience felt so enjoyable. She deserves a raise or some serious recognition. It’s rare to come across someone who elevates not just the service, but the entire atmosphere. She made the night feel special and that’s something we won’t forget. 💫👏

Definitely a place to be seen. Very trendy and very cool place. There isn’t a bad table in the house. A great venue. The food is equally great. We stuck to several tasting/small plates which we shared family style.

Google
First off it’s for aesthetics for sure. The place is lit up and very spacious. My brother and I did a walk in and was told unless we sat at the bar it was like a 45 minute wait. This location is busy. We finally sat at the bar and was told if we didn’t show IDs we couldn’t sit at the bar… the food comes out and everything was just okay. I wouldn’t recommend this place, there’s plenty of nearby places with better food.

Google
This spot delivers on every level—family-style dinner plates that are perfect for sharing, top-notch service that makes you feel right at home, and an atmosphere that’s warm, lively, and full of good energy. The food? Absolutely delicious. From start to finish, the vibe is legit and the experience hits all the right notes. Definitely a place worth coming back to!

Google
Exceptional staff and of course the food. Justine, Lucy and of course Precious delivers so much exuberance in their professionalism. Their professionalism bypass all fine dining criteria. As an accidental loner, they made me feel welcomed and exceeded needs that I don’t even have. And the manager Crystal welcomed me back with opening arms. This is the place to be on dates or just enjoying a cocktail by yourself whilst being obnoxious on the phone

The food was delicious, but a bit pricey. The ambiance was good, making it a romantic evening for my partner and me.

Tao was an absolutely stunning restaurant, from the elegant decor to the warm and inviting ambiance. The moment I walked in, I was impressed by the attention to detail, from the dim lighting that set the perfect mood to the beautifully presented dishes that were as much a feast for the eyes as they were for the palate. What truly made my experience unforgettable, however, was the exceptional service. Precious, my server, went above and beyond to ensure that every aspect of my meal was perfect. She was incredibly attentive without being intrusive, always checking in at just the right moments. Her warm personality and genuine enthusiasm made me feel truly valued as a guest. She took the time to provide thoughtful recommendations, which ended up being some of the best dishes I’ve ever had. It’s rare to find such a perfect combination of exquisite food, breathtaking atmosphere, and outstanding service, but Tao delivered on all fronts. Thanks to Precious, my experience was elevated to a whole new level. I can’t wait to return and would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience!

Google
TAO Uptown on East 58th is beautifully decorated and has a cozy ambience. We were in the neighborhood and booked via OpenTable for lunch. I can understand the fusion-Asian attempt and we ordered Cantonese, Thai, and Japanese dish. The Pad Thai and BBQ pork were too sweet for me while the Chef’s Roll was the best dish out of the 3. It’s a nice restaurant or bar to visit for drinks and snacks.

Yelp
This is not my first time at this restaurant and I loved it as much (if not more) than before. Ambiance is absolutely stunning. Any of the pictures you see barely do any justice to this place. Most definitely a restaurant for a special occasion, if you're looking for one. Service is fantastic. Staff is super attentive and definitely on point. Food - Star of the show - simply wow! I know the Chilean sea bass is mentioned quite a bit but serious, an absolute must try. This shush would turn anyone into a fish lover. So incredibly tender and perfectly seasoned to make this melt in your mouth delicious. The scallops were amazing as well, another must try. I seriously want to go back just for that sea bass. We went for my husband's birthday and they brought a giant fortune cookie filled with half vanilla & half chocolate mousse. Soooo good. Perfectly crispy and light. Delicious ending to an amazing dinner.

Yelp
Loved TAO while in town!! The service was so great, we had multiple people waiting on us that made sure we were always taken care of. It is SUCH a cool restaurant, the vibes and decorations are and a must see. We went for lunch on a Friday and it was not too crowded at all, we definitely did not need a reservation. I got the lunch special and it was a ton of food and all soooo good for a really reasonable price!! The vegetable rolls and sauce were amazing

Yelp
We have been to Tao Uptown a few times and the food, ambiance and service never disappoint - even after 14 years! We were excited to take our family here for the first time and the decor is always the initial stunner. The lush moody tropical feel is unique as is the multi story stone buddha statue! Our waitress was the epitome of a gracious professional, inquiring about and following up on food allergies, checking in frequently and seeing to it that our plates and the table were refreshed often. Amongst the many dishes we enjoyed, a few were standouts: Chicken Gyoza, Pecking Duck Spring Rolls (that's right!), Hot Edamame, Spicy Tuna Tartare, Diver Sea Scallops, Kung Pao Chicken, Filet Mignon Pepper Steak, and the Triple (yes!) Pork Fried Rice. Four stars instead of a five star review for the outstanding but noticeably high sodium content courses. Highly recommended for a special night out.

Yelp
I have been coming to Tao Uptown for over ten years. I have also visited Tao in Las Vegas. Tao is a solid "fancy" meal you can count on. While there are more upscale options, this gets the job done at a relatively "affordable" price for something higher end. The restaurant is huge with two levels. There's a bathroom downstairs staffed with an attendant. I do not think there is any way to access the bathroom other than the stairs. The orange chicken has always been good, but since I am now a vegetarian, I recently opted for the Veggie lo mein. It was good but nothing special. The Taotini is a solid drink choice if you like something sweet and refreshing. We had the vegetable egg roll which comes in 4 large pieces. Very good especially with the spicy mustard. Tao used to include rice with the orange chicken but we were annoyed to find out that they no longer include rice with the chicken and you must purchase separately. So my boyfriend wound up ordering rice alongside his chicken. This feels like a lame "shrinkflation" tactic. How much money does it cost to include a cup of rice in the meal? Rice costs next to nothing to make. Dessert here is always nice, especially if you get the giant fortune cookie. I've had it many times - but it is not something only two people can share. It's way too big. I recommend getting the fortune cookie with 4 or more people. I opted for the fortune cookie ice cream instead which was quite good. Service is always spot on, throughout the many years I've been coming to Tao. I've never waited long to place an order, receive water etc. There is always someone nearby ready to take action. I always come here with a reservation out of habit. I assume just dropping in may lead to a bit of a wait. It is kind of a drag to see young children in here and it seems to happen more frequently every time I come. It's surprising to me parents would spend this much money on food for a kid who will probably eat half and then abandon the rest. Seeing kids in here makes me feel like I am at a McDonald's and not a higher end restaurant. I also notice a lot of tourists coming here. It kind of cheapens the vibe a little bit, making Tao no longer feel like something special or "upscale". Nonetheless, it has remained a solid choice if we need a consistent, reliable meal in the midtown area.

Yelp
Really cool ambience and great service! TAO is a chain but apparently this is the "OG" location. They have a huge Buddha statue indoors which is very unique. Feels like you're in a different world. Tried their vegetable chow fun, kung pao chicken, and miso glazed sea bass. The flavors are definitely a bit Americanized but tasted great! My favorite was the chow fun, which was very filling. Minus one star since I felt that the entrees were overpriced relative to portion size (sea bass was $50). A fun spot for a night out!
google avatar

Alysha J.

Yelp
The ambiance and service A++! The food was cooked to perfection. Between the appetizers and the entree, I was stuffed. I had a martini flight. You were able to select 3 different or 3 of the same. Lychee was my favorite and on the stronger side. My only regret was not saving room for dessert.

Yelp
Today's visit was a little annoying. I sat at the bar upstairs (usually I use the one on the lower level) the bar staff upstairs short Asian or Japanese girl served me, she was attentive but flat personality so I didn't feel a need to engage. The guys downstairs are really nice. Food: I ordered the hot and sour soup; good as usual. Branzino: this was my issue, it comes with just a garnish of some type of shredded cabbage or something. When it arrives I was shocked at the portion, as they butterfly the fish and you get half of it, instead of the whole fish as I am use to from other restaurants in the city. It's grossly overpriced at $42. I ordered jasmine rice to go with it because it was so small (photo shows how thin it was). The girl said she would talk to her manager. Fine, so 30mins later she arrives with a chocolate dessert as a compliment for the fish, but never asked me if I ate chocolate or dessert. lol like I don't want to be rude so I ate half of it. I'm not a dessert person, so this didn't make it any better. I'll steer clear of these type of dishes at this restaurant.

Yelp
I recently celebrated my birthday at Tao Uptown in New York, and it was an unforgettable experience! The atmosphere was vibrant, filled with great music and energy, making it the perfect backdrop for a celebration with friends. The staff truly stood out; they were incredibly kind and attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed for a fantastic evening. We ordered the lamb chops, which were juicy and tender--absolutely a must-try. The miso-glazed Chilean seabass was equally impressive, buttery and fresh, melting in your mouth. Overall, Tao Uptown provided the perfect blend of delicious food, attentive service, and an electric vibe. I couldn't have asked for a better way to celebrate my special day!

Yelp
Great food in a trendy, energetic environment. Went to TAO Uptown on a busy Saturday evening and had a terrific meal. Started with the Peking Duck Spring Rolls, Shrimp and Scallop Spring Rolls and the Rock Shrimp Lettuce Cups - all solid. Followed with sharing the Miso Glazed Chilean Sea Bass (nice sized portion), Chinese Sausage and Shrimp Fried Rice (great combination) and a Rainbow Roll - all excellent. Our server Jonathon was very friendly and helpful. Great place to go especially for groups to share a number of dishes.

Yelp
I have came back here numerous of times, one was a time where I ordered the duck as I was always eager to try it. I would have to say it was exceptional and I enjoyed every single bite of it. Very happy to have ordered it. It was a perfect portion, huge actually so great to share without someone else. Said I wanted to be back just because of the duck. But clearly disappointed when coming next time... The next time I came for Valentine's Day...it was rather underwhelming . I would not be back on any holiday as they cram tables and parties together to try to accommodate the influx of reservations they overbooked. The service and food was lacking during these times. Ordered an expensive fish with broccoli and unfortunately the broccoli was super cold. As if they just threw it on the plate. This time around made me notice how different the service is overall and made me believe that there may have been a change of management somewhere. Unfortunately I did find myself coming back with a friend randomly as we were in the area and I knew that the happy hour here had impressive prices and dumplings. I was happy to have caught this as the dumplings were yummy and kept coming consistently. Drinks of course were decent for the occasion. I love tao though because of the ambiance and the culture that is engrained in it. Can you tell this was one of my favorite spots?

Yelp
An elegant restaurant with lots of seating and a huge Buddha statue. The lunch special is amazing $35 for three courses - highly recommend. The vegetarian spring rolls were excellent. I was not a fan of the mango sorbet though. Our server seemed new so a little out of order and got the bill wrong but I am sure the other servers are excellent.

Yelp
I have only been to TAO once. To be honest, I am impressed on all factors. The ambiance especially. I really enjoyed the food here, specifically that one soup I can't quite remember its name. It was hella good. The rice wasn't really getting to me, but could have been a LOT worse. The server was very charming. I did like his personality towards me; a very confused individual looking at the complex menu. Pretty charming time, only a place I'd recommend going to if you're willing to spend cash on a nice fancy dinner.

Yelp
Had the most delightful dining experience here! A friend and I came for their happy hour deal which was incredibly worth it. We got a $15 Tiny Martini Flight and got the Manhattan, Lychee Martini, and Taotini, which were surprisingly a little strong. My favorite was the Taotini - sweet with a slight tang! My friend really enjoyed the Lychee Martini which I think TAO is known for. The dumplings were delicious and such a steal at $1 per dumpling! Between the two of us, we each had a total of 3 pan fried chicken gyozas and 3 pork potstickers. While the dumplings didn't taste super authentic, they were nonetheless crispy and flavorful. I was really surprised by how packed each dumpling was. We even ordered 3 more chicken gyozas later on just because of how good they were! Highly recommend going early. We got there a little after 5 and the downstairs bar was already filled so we went and sat at the empty bar upstairs. By the time we left around 6:30, both bars and most of the general dining tables were filled. The servers were very kind and upbeat. The inside is absolutely beautiful too. Really worth the trip!

Recently went to tao. The food was very good and the service was very fast and efficent. Would definitely recommend.

Yelp
I've been here several times and the past 3 years for Valentine's Day. The seating was in a busy aisle right above the stairs, which is fine I've sat here before. But unfortunately a whole drink was spilled on my date. I waited for a bit to see if I needed to actually ask to have someone clean it up. Security made Nichole aware as soon as it happened as well. I did have to ask for clean up. FOOD: I ordered nigiri sushi which was great! Also had shrimp crispy noodle and chicken gyoza all excellent. We were given an empty pot of soy sauce so that was a five min wait or more after I was served my dish. Entree was 74$ and they bring me out ice ice cold broccoli on a beef and broccoli dish. Dry aged steak was lukewarm warm. Highly disappointed at this point and I asked for my dish to go. I won't be back at this Tao but I will try other locations . Also The bar downstairs vs upstairs was not consistent. Night and day with drinks. Downstairs bar makes immaculate drinks.

Chef L.

Yelp
Chris, the manager takes care of me every time. I really enjoy myself at Tao uptown. Also, I see that they changed the menu and added new items. The lamb chops were to die for and the chicken satay was amazing. Keep it up !!!

Yelp
Great business lunch location - it's easy to make a reservation for a large party, and visually impressive for any out of towners. I arrived with my team of 6 people and we had to wait for the full party to be seated. It's dim and lightly lit by candles and soft inside with a huge statue and decorative scrolls. There is a $30 lunch prefixe that includes an appetizer and entree, and a supplemental charge +$5 for dessert. I got the caramelized shrimp as an appetizer which was pretty good but they arrived on a mint leaf which I'm not sure if I was supposed to eat or not lol. I thought what I got, the crying Tiger hanger steak, was a decent deal for lunch - the other options looked okay too. The steak was cooked well, medium rare, and seasoned. The fries were honestly really good as well, and seasoned!

Yelp
We came for an anniversary dinner. The bar scene was quite lively downstairs, but we got a table upstairs. We had a view at tables down below as well as of the restaurant, which has a wonderful Asian sense of decor and lighting. The drinks (TaoTinis and margaritas) were excellent, and we ordered the chicken gyoza dimsum appetizers - awesome! Our meals of honey salmon and curried scallops were delicious. We finished with their chocolate cake (divine) and cappuccinos. Service was spot on all night and we had a wonderful time there. It is definitely pricey for Chinese food, but everything was upscale, perfect and worth it for a special occasion. Well done!

Yelp
TAO Uptown is located in Midtown Manhattan. It's a stylish Pan-Asian eatery with three levels and a giant Buddha centerpiece. They offer a wide variety of options and all the options are perfect to share as a table. We ordered a lot and everything was good but my favorites were the surf and turf roll, bok choy, grilled wagyu ribeye and Tao lo mein. They also have a wide variety or cocktails and wines by the glass and bottle to choose from. Our server was pretty good and the food came out fairly quickly with no issues.
google avatar

Yelp
First time in Tao and I see the appeal. The restaurant is GORGEOUS and has a nice vibe to it. We went for a quick lunch and the team was on their game. For food, we ordered off both the regular and lunch menu. Off the regular, we ordered the Pad Thai 3/5 it was just ok, have had better and wouldn't order that here again and a side of rice. And from the lunch menu, I ordered the Spicy Thai chicken lettuce wraps 3/5 good and fresh but tiny, and the Crying tiger hanger steak 4/5 delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Though many reviews say TAO is overrated, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here. Upon entering, the staff was welcoming and kind to my family. We were seated almost immediately and had one of the most friendly waiters who gave us plenty of time to look over the menu, had good suggestions based on our dietary needs as vegetarians, and even offered to take our photos in front of the Buddha statue in the center of the restaurant. The food came out at the right time and prepped exactly how we ordered it. We got the bamboo dumplings, veggie chow fun, shishito peppers, 8 green fried rice, and pad thai. Let me tell you, the food was so good that we finished each dish without leaving a crumb. Each dish had good flavor and were not overpowered by soy sauce or spices that would usually mask other aspects of the dish. And if we did not find the spice level to be up to our standard, there was plenty of chili oil, sriracha, and raw chili on the side. Ambiance was perfect, with a dim-litted center dining area and comfortable seating. There were spaces to have an intimate dinner and spaces where you can catch up with friends at their bar or lounge area. It was a little loud in the waiting/lounge area but once you get your own table, it becomes much more quiet. The restaurant is located in a good area where you can grab dessert at many local shops, take a walk in central park, or even take the tram to Roosevelt Island. Parking is obviously a hassle, but what can you do, its NYC. 5/5 Stars!

Yelp
Flashy upscale Asian fusion restaurant with a cool environment. The star of the show is the massive Buddha statue, but the restaurant is filled with plenty of other very showy decor including giant Chinese calligraphy hanging from the ceiling, a koi pond, large Asian lanterns, and more. Along with the exposed brick walls, you can tell they are really trying to go for the high-end authentic Asian vibe. Now as for the food, I personally feel that it's not actually that authentically Asian / Chinese. However, it is still pretty good albeit didn't totally impress me. Moreover, everything was kind of overpriced, as you will see in my descriptions below. I came with a large group so got the chance to try a whole bunch of options: Crispy Orange Chicken ($36) - very overpriced for this regular sized plate of orange chicken; the chicken was good and tender but definitely not worth this much 8 Greens Fried Rice ($19) - this veggie fried rice was decent but not particularly great either Lobster and Kimchee Fried Rice ($36) - this one was much better than the other fried rice but you certainly pay a premium for it Thai Sweet and Spicy Shrimp ($39) - this was actually delicious, as the shrimp had a really tasty crispy coating around it with a nice sweet (although not spicy at all) sauce on it; the price is quite steep for this plate of shrimp though Diver Sea Scallops ($43) - tasty but average quality scallops; this price for 4 scallops is quite hefty... I think you're seeing a trend here... Chef's Sushi Roll ($25) - as a sushi fan, I enjoyed this tasty sushi roll which had tuna and salmon in it Roasted Shishito Peppers ($15) and Edamame ($15) starters were average quality. Same with the pork gyoza. Ruby Red Dragon cocktail was very good and fruity. We also ordered a Chilean Sea Bass, but it just never came! At least that saved us the $48. On top of not receiving this dish, there were several other dishes that also seemed to have been forgotten until we reminded our waiter about them and asked him to check on them for us. Plus, the lobster fried rice we got was not even a dish that we ordered. This did not leave me with a great impression for the service. Overall, TAO is definitely a cool spot to experience once or show a friend who is visiting NYC, but honestly I think the food is overpriced and not really worth it. That being said, just being in this kind of environment certainly is worth something too.

Yelp
Amazing experience. Great food and excellent service. Drinks were delicious and the staff was super friendly. I'll definitely be bringing my family back here. Located in heart of NYC, this place boasts many accolades including a great space and a wonderful ambience.
google avatar

Stefano T.

Yelp
The food was great...expensive but great. The atmosphere on the main level is very noisy and VERY dark. We were seated on the main floor where they have crammed lots of tables near each other so you don't have much room. Constantly being knocked by either waiters or other diners as there is little real estate between tables. Probably won't go back and was a disappointing experience.
google avatar

Vladimir C.

Yelp
If you want a Ny trendy experience go here. You are made to wait in the bar area to feel pressured in to ordering a drink until your table is ready. But the food is epic and the service is good, I can not lie if I need a place to take coworker or acquaintances I will take them here so they think Im cool and hope they split the bill.
google avatar

Haoua G.

Yelp
A little noisy But the food was very tasty I will recommend it if you want to party. My waitress was very nice. The old security guy was very friendly

Yelp
This happy hour deal is honestly kinda hard to beat. It's a very upscale restaurant, so these prices for a happy hour was fantastic! The martini flight was $15 for 3 martinis, I will say the martinis were kinda small and not all that strong. But they were so ridiculously tasty. Especially the espresso and litchi ones - so so delicious The dumplings were all also great - pretty cool value because they're $1 per dumpling so you can try all the different ones. The edamame is just $5 and you get SO much edemame - yummy edemame too! Definitely go early because the happy hour space gets stupidly crowded, we went around 6 on a Thursday and barely had place to stand. The vibe upstairs is fancy and well decorated though, so overall enjoyable experience!!

Yelp
This Chinese, Asian Fusion, restaurant has been here for many years now. We came for lunch and walked right in without a reservation. The interior is very eclectic and rather dark and gloomy yet sets the tone for the overall ambiance. The menu is quite good, and they have a special lunch menu, $29.95, advertised for three courses outside, but it turns out the third, dessert, if you want it is $5. more. I chose the Vietnamese Chicken Salad and the Chow Fun with shrimp for my main entree. Both were excellent, and the portions are huge... well worth the price. The chicken salad was dressed just right with a hint of spiciness and cilantro. I enjoyed the Chow Fun as the noodles were very tasty and fresh, and the shrimp nicely grilled. Service was good and overall a very nice experience. This would be a nice place for dinner with a group of friends.

Marie Ragy R.

Yelp
Went for happy hour. Rating is for price and drinks. The area by the bar is spacious, and you can enjoy your meal there. I ordered some potstickers and the martini flight. Very decent price for the location. Food is good as always, I just wish they had more options for bites, other than dumplings, in their Happy Hour menu, like their location in downtown. The martinis were good, definitely order those. Service was okay.
google avatar

Phil B.

Yelp
The restaurant is well designed and a very relaxing atmosphere. However, the food is only average. There's too much of the Asian fusion type food going around and it's overpriced for what it is. The service is hit or miss but my gut feeling is once the trend wears off. It will be just another passing attraction

Ellie P.

Yelp
Average sushi with a beautiful mind-blowing interior. My husband and I came here for our anniversary and it was obvious the staff was stretched thin that night. However our server was so wonderful and did everything he could to make sure we had the best time! The food was average. The toro was delicious however the rest was unimpressive. I'm glad they had some options for my husband who isn't really a fan of sushi. The chopstick rests were too cute so I had to ask if I could purchase a pair but we were gifted them for our anniversary instead. They made for a super fun souvenir to take home.
google avatar

Nancy H.

Yelp
Came here for valentines day! They had a box of free chocolates for everyone which was a cute touch. We ordered 2 shrimp appetizers. One of them was shrimp lettuce cups and the other was garlic chili shrimp with fried noodles. I preferred the lettuce cups which were tasty, crispy, and saucy. The other was good as well but the flavor got a little too salty/heavy after a while. For entrees, we got the black pepper filet mignon and the triple pork fried rice. The filet mignon was super tender and cooked well. Paired with the veggies and rice, it was very good. Definitely need rice with it as it can be a little salty. The triple pork fried rice was very good as well, very fragrant and a generous portion. Overall, decent Chinese food but definitely overpriced as you could get the same or similar at a Chinese restaurant for half the price- you are definitely paying for the nice environment.

Connie L.

Yelp
Really good food and drinks. Very fun environment, great place to come with friends and adult family.

Yelp
We usually go to Downtown one. And it was our first time in Uptown Tao. We had same great experience. Impeccable service, great food, served fast. Definitely on the list of our favorite places as well.

Yelp
9:30pm reservation, was seated 2 hrs later for my friends bday dinner. We were standing around in the downstairs seating area...it was crowded but I felt like I was in sex and the city (lol) we were then moved to upper "lounge" which was just bar at the upper dining area. Nice little ambiance for sure but the service wasn't great. We also went to the bathroom, letting the waiter know we'd be right back (hadn't paid yet and our dessert was coming) and she took our left over food and disposed of it, we barely ate it. I'd give it another try on a night that isn't as busy. I did also go on a Friday night. The apps that I tried were pretty good though and so were the drinks.

Yelp
TAO Uptown (or anything under the TAO Hospitality group) may be overrated, but I actually enjoyed most of their food items and our waiter was absolutely fantastic (and hilarious at that). For appetizers we ordered the chicken satay and lobster and shrimp spring rolls. The appetizers were good but honestly nothing to write home about. However, the entrees were pretty solid. We got the 8 greens fried rice, miso roasted black cod, and the crispy snapper. All 3 meals were great but I believe the winner is definitely the miso roasted black cod. A decent portion was given and the vegetables were a nice touch. Of course Nobu's classic miso cod reigns supreme, but Tao's wasn't bad at all. Now, the real standout here was definitely the desserts. We got the "Sweet Pray Love" which was a collection of 3 desserts- molten chocolate lava cake, banana pudding, and giant fortune cookie per recommendation of our lovely waiter. Yes, it's a lot of dessert but there were 3 of us and if we have any commonality it's a sweet tooth. Everything was great but the giant fortune cookie stood out to me- the half chocolate half vanilla cream was fantastic. My girlfriend and I went for our joint birthday celebration and they definitely outdid themselves with the presentation. The only reason I knocked off one star was because the drinks were not good, but rather than that I believe that Tao deserves all the hype it gets!

Yelp
This was my 1st here and we chose this location for ease of access. We initially had rsvp'd for 4 but changed it to 8 and they were able to accommodate the larger size. The interior is slightly dim but spacious, there is a huge buddha status in the rear area which is closer to where we sat. We can for lunch and even though the atmosphere felt upscale, I think most people were dressed nicely casual, dinner may look more formal. I had the lychee martini x 2 which was excellent. We had a feast with several items which honestly all tasted delicious. The children in the group wanted some sushi so we got those as well. Wonton Loster Potstickers Short Rib- Very good Pad Thai (chicken) Triple Pork Fried Rice- so good Bok Choy California Roll Chef's roll Tao Roll It not a cheap meal and portions can be bigger but being that we ordered a several things (and 2 children who didn't eat part of everything) we were at least satisfied and content...we did not leave hungry or overstuffed. I would come back here. Their bar area looks really attractive, perhaps come for drinks and small chops in the area.

Yelp
Three of us arrived at 4:50 on a Friday for happy hour which starts at 5pm Monday through Friday. The bar was full but the lounge area had plenty of seating when we arrived but filled up quickly as it got closer to 5pm. We waited til 5 and a waitress Justine approached us and took our drink and dumplings order. Their happy hour features $15 tiny martini flights and $1 dumplings. There is no minimum for dumplings you can order. The drinks came out quickly on these cute little trees and the dumplings right after on plates. The tricky part is the tables are in between the little couches so you either eat on your lap or at one of the tables in the middle. We ate on our laps which was fine. The chicken gyoza and pork potstickers were delicious!! We ordered another flight and more dumplings and despite it being very busy Justine was very attentive. Would definitely come again and make sure you get there before 5pm to secure a spot.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this place, but unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. The service was painfully slow--even though the restaurant wasn't busy, it took over 30 minutes just to get drinks. When the food finally arrived, it was lukewarm at best and lacked any real flavor. The steak I ordered medium-rare came out well-done, and when I pointed it out to the server, they just shrugged and walked away. To make matters worse, the prices were outrageous for what we got. The ambiance was also underwhelming, with music that was either too loud or nonexistent. Overall, it was a waste of time and money. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

Yelp
Had lunch at Tao with child #4 today. She is a vegetarian, loves Asian food and is always impressed by large venues. Tao meets all of those requirements in a single spot. The whole check-in and swatting (wait) experience is very NYC (unpleasant and unnecessary) style. Whynhold me in the waiting lounge area for 15 minutes when the place is not full and I had a reservation. Once we passed this stage we were seated and the better part of the experience began. We ordered several dishes with a focus on vegetarian other than my Orange chicken (House specialty). Everything was great and the Chinese broccoli a yummy surprise. #4 is our sweet-tooth child and was the only one with dessert capacity. The fortune cookie was a tasty, beautiful choice. Haven't been to Tao in many years and it was great going back to a tasty eating experience.

Yelp
Food delicious. Had sushi and shrimp dish. service was quick. I would not order main meal until you eat your appetizer. The main meal came out too quickly . I could bearly eat my soup. My husband came 15 after my meal arrived. Timing is off. Place was pretty but very drafty where we were seated. Spoke to manager about a few things but he walked off and paid no mind to a few issues . Not cool. The waiter was very pleasant.

Yelp
Came here for a family weekend lunch before exploring around NYC. Did not have a reservation and waited about 20 mins before being seated. The ambiance is great with the tall ceilings and the theatrical decor. The service was nice, very professional. I would have to say that I expected more from the food though after hearing Tao's reputation. We asked the server what they recommended and the food were good, but fairly standard for Asian fusion restaurant. It was a nice experience overall though given the nice ambiance.

Yelp
Happy to charge if you miss your reservation, but are very slow to honor it. Diners should get to charge the restaurant! We need an "equal dignities" rule.

Yelp
Tao is a staple!! Perfect for a birthday or celebration!! The staff is great and if you make a reservation you get your table immediately the food is great and fairly priced Our waitress was making amazing recommendations the drinks are so yummy We went on a Saturday and it was packed nice mood lighting and music (a bit loud for my taste but ok overall) I don't have a picture but we order the fortune cookie dessert and it was pretty goood All this food was plenty for 3 people and we pay about $100 person with 20% tip

Yelp
Before anyone says anything, yes, I realize I am out of my depth at this place. We met some family friends here for a late lunch. Party of 8 please. We all did the 3 course lunch. I had the lettuce rolls, crying tiger hanger steak and banana pudding. Everything was top notch. Steak was perfect medium. Hot pink center and juice running in the plate. Banana pudding was excellent. Not grandma's recipe but really really good. Service was 5 star.

Yelp
I am writing this message with deep disappointment regarding my reservation at TAO Up Town, which I made through OpenTable for my daughter's birthday celebration on November 8th. Upon arrival, I was met with a receptionist whose behavior was shockingly rude and arrogant. Such conduct is entirely unacceptable for someone in customer service. Despite arriving on time for my 7:00 PM reservation, I was kept waiting for an additional 55 minutes, and even now, at 7:55 PM, I still have not been called to be seated. This level of disregard for customers' time is unacceptable and reflects a significant lack of respect for patrons. Even now, as I write this, I am still sitting in the bar area, waiting to be called. TAO Up Town has shown a complete absence of consideration for its guests. This experience has been highly disappointing and does not meet the standard of service one expects for a special occasion.
