The Best Restaurants in Madison, Wisconsin | Eater Chicago

"Some places do good food, some places do good vibes, and some places just put it all together in a way you couldn’t break down into parts — the whole operation just makes you happy. Whether it’s the extensive birria menu, the fruity margs, or a stunning egg-topped chorizo mollete for brunch, Tapatios is the kind of place you’ll leave full, but also grinning. This is Mexican, you’ll have no problem justifying technically leaving the borders of Madison for, and Fitchburg’s right next door anyway. Online ordering is available. Be sure to also check out catering options through the spot’s food cart." - Kyle Nabilcy

If you are looking for authentic Mexican cuisine with a cozy and friendly atmosphere this is the right choice. We started with their amazing drinks followed by a mouth-watering quesadilla and tacos. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned—nothing short of amazing. The portions were generous, just the right size. The service was exceptional. Our server was polite, discreet, and extremely knowledgeable about the menu, guiding us through some great choices. It really made the dining experience special. The ambiance was equally impressive—tastefully decorated with a warm, welcoming vibe. It felt like we had our own little corner of peace, perfect for our family meal. Plus, the restaurant was impeccably clean, which is always a huge plus. What really stood out to us was the value. For a family of four, it was surprisingly affordable, especially considering the quality and quantity of the food. We've definitely found a gem here and will absolutely be coming back. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for great food, a pleasant dining experience, and great value. Can’t wait for our next visit!

Staff friendly and the salsa is so fresh and delicious! Chips are thicker ones so if you’re into that then you will like it here. We got both fajitas with chorizo and the cheese speciality too bottom right and neither was style I’m accustomed to but the flavor was nice! So if your adapted to this more juicy/oily meat style your going love this place as flavors where great all around!

I work across the street at Verizon and we get take out all the time…. First time I’ve ever dined in and it was after their renovation. LET.ME.TELL.YOU. Absolutely amazing upgrade to everything. Awesome before, but absolutely amazing now! Service, top notch. Food, to die for. Atmosphere and ambience, next level! I’m stuffed right now, but we’re already planned another date night visit!

Listen. If you haven't gone yet. Stop reading and just GO! Their birria is SO GOOD! Birria tacos, stew, quesadilla, doesn't matter, just get the birria! Our server was so lovely and I'm sad I didn't get her name! From the decor to the customer service, to the food. You GOTTA support this place and treat yoself while you're at it! I got the Birria Estilo Jalisco, a stew that came with a mini taco, tortillas, rice, beans, cilantro, and onions. I had a Negra Modelo beer and it was *chef's kiss* all for $16! The boyfriend got their tacos. If you're still reading. GO!

Authentic Mexican restaurant, almost elevated. Everything was prepared well and was very impressed. Not the kind of place you’ll find your dish smothered in cheese sauce. You can tell that everything is made from scratch. Very very good and the tacos were amazing.

Best burritos in Madison!! The interior is cute and ascetic and patio is also really nice! California burrito and mar y tierra burrito just hit the spot everytime.

Shredded beef tacos were fantastic, the service was just outstanding everybody was so friendly and they even came around with a plate of lemons and different things to sort of a clean out your pal a little bit like lemon slices etc which I thought was a nice touch. Even the chips that they use for chips and salsa seem to be much better and more flavor to them than most Mexican restaurants. They had plenty of room and was easy to navigate with my walker.pleny seating. I like you waiters having a handheld payment system that was very quick and easy to use and even know what took me a while at first the waiter was patient and showed me how to use it and it was just great. And the prices were very fair.

Short review: great atmosphere but gentrified vibes, awful food, and disproportionate prices to the quality. Long review: This used to be our favorite place to eat Mexican food in Madison! We’ve tried so many other places, but this was the only place that had good authentic tacos. This is our first time coming back since their closing. We got there and were surprised by the new look. We got seated, and were given the complimentary chips and “pico.” Now I use that word lightly because it was the most watered down, flavorless pico I’ve ever had. The order: 1 Baja taco, 1 grilled shrimp, 1 pescado, 1 Al pastor, and a gallo burrito (grilled chicken). On every single taco that awful flavorless pico was piled on to fill the shell. Half the taco is pico, and they put cheese on the tacos to hold the double shells together, which just doesn’t go with fish or shrimp. The al pastor was oily and didn’t taste of al pastor, had no pineapple. (Oh and every shell is soaked in oil) The grilled chicken burrito was more burnt than grilled and to make it worse it came out cold. There was almost no chicken in the burrito and it was more pico and beans than anything. If only they had put the amount of chicken as their pico. I would not recommend this place, and definitely disappointed by their increased prices.
