Taqueria El Chato's trompo tacos are a fantastic midnight snack - Review - New York - The Infatuation

"A crunchy, cheesy vampiro from Taqueria El Chato’s second location is MacDougal Street's solution to late-night hunger. This taqueria stuffs tacos, vampiros, and quesadillas—all served on housemade tortillas—with perfectly cooked meats, like lengua, steak, or chorizo. And because this counter-service spot from the Aldama team is open until 1am and a block and a half from Washington Square Park, it’s ideal for a quick, late-night bite south of 14th Street. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte Pause Unmute At least one trompo taco is essential on every visit. The bright, annato-stained pork belly and flank steak-combo has a perfect smoky char, and acidic sweetness from charred pineapple that balances things out. Order it as a vampiro, where the tortilla is crisped up and topped with a layer of bubbly cheese. Food Rundown Trompo Every visit to Taqueria El Chato should include at least one taco from the trompo. Flank steak and pork belly are marinated and spit-roasted al pastor-style. The nicely charred meat is seasoned with tons of annato and roasted chili, and just a little pineapple for sweetness. photo credit: Kate Previte Lengua El Chato’s lengua is supremely tender—like, the tortilla is firmer than the meat here. This one is best spicy, so load it up with puckering salsa roja. photo credit: Kate Previte Chorizo We find their chorizo goes best as a vampiro—the cumin and chili powder-forward sausage meshes excellently with a crunchy tortilla that somehow manages to not crumble. Mushroom We love when taquerias put some thought into their non-meat options, and El Chato nails their mushroom. Cooked in a spicy, smoky chili oil, they’re full of flavor. photo credit: Kate Previte Asada The one meat we’re not wild about at El Chato is their carne asada. Sure it's cooked nicely but also bland, and served with really sweet grilled onions that overpower the beefy flavor. We see this taco as more of a vehicle for their salsas. photo credit: Kate Previte" - Will Hartman

Amazing tacos & service. The closest thing that reminded me of my time at Texas — loved every bite!

We tried this, Carnitas Ramirez, and Santo taco all back to back. It was interesting to have in such close succession. El Chato is very good, a little messy and the tortillas could be better as these are definitely premade, but the meats are tasty and they have really good spicy in the salsa. The Al pastor was a bit too oily but the taste was good - similar for the asada, a bit overpacked and moist, but just super flavorful, fun to eat. The vibes are a little neat and tidy, maybe the restaurant lacks a little character, but it’s good, open late, a step up historically for tacos in the city. It’s a great spot, it might be third in our crawl, but it remains extremely high quality.

We were in the West Village and decided to pass by this taco spot all we can say is what an incredible find! If you’re looking for truly authentic Mexican tacos, these are by far the best in NYC. As a Mexican, you can immediately tell when the salsa and tortillas are made fresh — and here, they absolutely are. They offer a great variety, with delicious salsas and handmade tortillas. We tried the carne asada, chorizo, and al pastor tacos, plus a quesadilla con carne everything was amazing. This place has officially become our favorite taquería in the city. Highly recommend!

Google
Slowly accepting the reality of $6 tacos in NYC, but these are up there with the best in the city and maybe some of the best shops in LA. Tortillas are grilled to order. Everything is super greasy.

Welcome to Mexico 🇲🇽 city with the Big Flag at the heart of the city, in El Zócalo, also known as La Plaza de la Constitución. It is many years since I visited Mexico City and I remember vividly the giant flag and the amazing tacos. This is the first place in nyc that takes me back to the good memories of a truly amazing food. suadero, pastor, asada, tripa, chorizo, and even lengua with salsa verde and hot salsa, pickled vegetables and onion and peppers 🌶️. Everything is home made and the friendly couple who runs everything are welcoming and nice. We had the suadero, asada, tripa, chorizo. So good and so Mexican, the best tacos 🌮 in nyc

Best tacos I’ve had in NYC. On par with the best you’ll get in SoCal and dare I say on par with Taqueria Orinoco in CDMX (if you know you know). Antonio the proprietor is a gem and the real deal.

Yelp
This was the perfect spot to stop in for a delicious, filling, quick lunch without breaking the bank. Had 2 tacos for about $5 each, and felt like it was enough to keep me going for the rest of the afternoon. I had la lengua (tongue), which I loved, and campechano (brisket/chorizo). Both really hit the spot.... really flavorful, well seasoned meat that wasn't overpowered by a bunch of toppings, but just enough to really make the flavor pop. Small place with bar seating along the wall. They have a little salsa bar homemade salsas for you to add to your tacos (verde that's not very spicy and roja that is spicy), as well as pickled onions and grilled veg (onions and peppers). You order at the front counter, tacos are ready within a few minutes. This is more of a quick in and out place rather than somewhere you linger for long, though I really enjoyed having my tacos by the window so that I could people watch out onto the street. Prime location too, right on macdougal, south of Washington sq park, but wasn't overrun with people like a lot of the brunch places are.

Yelp
Some of the best tacos in NYC. I would put these tacos right up there with the heavy hitters in NYC. Good tortillas, savory fillings, fresh ingredients and good salsas. The downsides are they are slightly on the smaller side and they are pricey. $5-$6 per taco can really add up. Its a very polished almost high end looking taqueria. They have tablets to order. But ordering was easy enough and food came out pretty quick.

Yelp
El Chato is the beesssssst. I haven't had tacos like this in a long time. Ingredients are top notch and the salsas are so freaking good. I love that they have Vampiros which is a hard crunchy tortilla with melted cheese on top and protein of your choice. Super solid!! They're the same size as the tacos but different eating experience. I tried the Suadero Vampiro and the meat was tender and juicy juxtaposed with a crunchy tortilla it was just the perfect pairing. Love love love! As for tacos, I had Asada, Tripa and in the end I got an extra one and I went with Mushroom. All very delicious. Asada is my fave but it's generally my go-to so of course it's a top for me. Tripa is unique.. it's crunchy and salty. Not sure what to compare it to but it's really good. And mushroom wow juicy flavorful, all the good things. Love that they have drink options that aren't sodas. Jamaica hit the spot. You order on the screen at the counter. If it was a busy day I can see how it'll make everything slower. But when we walked up around lunch time, we were able to order right away. Thankfully! The only thing...I wish they had chips. I really love their salsas so I would've loved to continue the meal with some chips after tacos.

Yelp
The Tripe taco is amazing. 100% comparable and just as good as the tripe tacos in LA. Tripe is not easy to find as a taco ingredient here, so super glad I now have a go-to for my tripe needs. I love how the tripe is extra crispy and there is a self-serve salsa bar. Also ordered the Campechano Vampiro, which was okay. Would come back to order more tripe tacos and try the asada and pastor, even though the meat on the trompo looked low key dry. Not busy at all on a Saturday night in the village. Plenty of open seats for now, but I'm sure there won't be soon once the masses find out. My only suggestion would be to get a screen- like cover for the onions and peppers in the salsa bar as the oil attracts flies. Mexican coke, Topo Chico and Jamaica also available.

Yelp
This new taco spot in the west village really surprised me, the tacos were amazing and tasted like authentic Mexican street tacos, the meat selections are diverse and high quality, the service was fast. Overall very good.

Yelp
Best asada quesadilla of my life. Their food is a work of art. So glad they opened in Manhattan. Clean and stylish decor doesn't hurt either. 10/10 for authentic tacos
