The Best Tacos in Mexico City Can Be Found at These 19 Taquerías - Eater

"Located in the financial district, taquería Gabriel specializes in tacos al carbon (charcoal-grilled tacos) and volcanes (served on a fried tortilla turned up at the edges) with grilled proteins like beef, adobada, suckling pig, and shrimp. The volcanes are especially great: charred, almost ashy tortillas, not quite as crunchy as a tostada, topped with a small mountain of meat and cheese melted over the top. One of a new wave of taquerías, Gabriel offers more flexibility than some other spots, allowing you to customize your taco with your choice of flour or corn tortilla or volcan, and the option to skip cheese." - Natalia de la Rosa

"The lonchería is an old-school concept, a casual diner where office workers got their lunchtime fix, but in the hands of the guys behind Bravo, it's also a haven for serious foodies. They've taken the torta—a meaty sandwich served on a house-made bolillo roll—and made it gourmet, with a daily-changing menu of options packed with pickled veggies, hot sauces, regional condiments, and moles. Here hipsters and office workers pack into the long bar that loops through the industrial-chic space, complementing their meal with craft beers and mezcal."

Orinoco is great but Gabriel is so much better (1) incredible salsas (2) food is mind blowing (3) the vibe is so fun, and great staff Definitely the best “street tacos” not from the street.

I sat down 30 mins after they opened and they already said 1/3 of the taco selections were unavailable. The potion size was standard which is perfect but the tortilla was kinda dry and splitting in the middle while eating. (POLLO CON CEBOLLA Y CHIMICHURRI) the chicken is tender and juicy. 4️⃣/5️⃣ CHICHARRON DE TRIPA $45 (GUACAMOLE, CEBOLLA Y CILANTRO) is my least favourite. 0️⃣/5️⃣ Server was kinda pushy (he kept trying to upsell me to order beer AND tequila for lunch). Overall it’s not a bad experience but I would not go back.

What a great meal! Excellent service, this is one of my favorite places for lunch close to reforma, highly recommended for a quick meal

Very average tacos and mediocre service. I really do not get the hype around Taqueria Gabriel. The tacos I ordered here are nothing special and just downright mid. I usually order the al pastor or the trompo de asada, but they are a disappointment. Both types of tacos are often burnt, and the flavor isn’t there. Additionally, they are too greasy for my taste. The service is slow and lacks enthusiasm. The prices are not worth it for the mediocre food you receive. What bothers me the most is that the tacos come out at different times rather than all at once, which isn’t the best experience. There are many better places around the Reforma area that serve much better tacos than Taqueria Gabriel.

The tocos were okay, but not my vibe. Service overall was great and efficient. I ordered tacos de lechón and got it fast. The delivery was great and the purple cabbage was a nice touch. However I didn’t enjoy the shredded lechón. I prefer chunks vs shredded. I did not try the other tacos so this is based on the lechón. I probably wouldn’t come back for tacos, better options around the area.

This was the first restaurant I visited with friends as soon as we got to CDMX. The tacos are delicious. They have a “quesadillón de lechón” that’s just out of this world. This taqueria is definitely in my top 3 favorite taquerias in Mexico. The service is great and they treat you so nicely.

Fantastic experience. The shrimp taco was my by far favorite (surprised as I don’t even like shrimp that much!). Definitely in the top 5 taco places I have tried in CDMX. Margaritas are very strong (in a good way). Say as are amazing. Everything we tried was gluten free. They even have gluten free beer. They appear to be pretty conscious of allergies.

Fantastic food!!! Eating a burrito or anything else somewhere else after this will not be the same anymore! 🥰

Yelp
They have the best quesadillas at this side of Mexico City. I ordered a quesadilla arabe de asada and this thing was humongous with over 40 grams of freshly cooked carne asada. It also had quesillo which is a Oaxaca style cheese. I ordered a Jamaica fruit drink to go along with the dinner, and I enjoyed that as well. It was served jn an extra large glass. I really have become a big fan of Jamaica juice drinks that they sell around here. This little cafe was busier than some of the other cafes kn the street, and the service was fast. The restaurant was comfortable with a typical vibe of other small restaurants in the area

Yelp
Spot recommended to us by our airbnb host, pretty solid! i think it was slightly expensive for the area but honestly not by much. You get the chips which are super yummy. My favorite taco was probably the adobada but try a few since they all different cuts of meat. The quesadilla also slapped, the flour tortilla was pillowy reminiscent of pita bread. Service was great and the seating area is very nice as well!

Yelp
The wait staff is really nice and they have really great flan for dessert after eating the yummy tacos! Also live entertainment!!!

Yelp
My wife and I visited Taqueria Gabriel multiple times during a recent trip to Mexico. This taqueria served up some of our favorite tacos of our trip. We tried multiple tacos including the Pastor, Lechon, Suadero and Hongos tacos. The pastor was tender and topped with juicy pineapple. The lechon was super juicy and the hongos (mushrooms) were tender and juicy. All the tacos were served on warm, soft and savory tortillas. Overall, the tacos were addictive and super flavorful.

Yelp
The tacos were good. Volcán so-so, but probably because I got it with adobado. Next time I'll try the carne asada. It was more expensive than I expected though.

Yelp
One of my favorite meals on the trip! Delicious food with friendly, patient service. The restaurant strikes a good balance between cool and cozy- a nice place to go with friends and linger. Standout tacos for me were the mushroom and the shrimp.

Yelp
Place sucked. Not only did they give us only one red and one green salsa (for a order of 2 burritos and one taco) but the salsas were literally 10% filled. To top it off my gf found a small piece of plastic in our dessert. Oh ya, they forgot the guacamole in both our burritos. As far as the taste of the taco and burritos, they were ok. Burritos were a bit on the greasy side and taco was just solid. Not great not bad. Price was high. I'm not ok paying 2 dollars for a taco or 8 dollars for a skinny burrito. Won't be back. 2.0 out of 5

Yelp
Wonderful place. I highly recommend Taqueria Gabriel in Mexico City for their super tasty tacos and cold beer. We dropped in twice in a four-day span and enjoyed everything we ordered. Their beef and mushroom tacos are among the best tacos I've tried and the service was super-friendly. Five stars.

Yelp
Great tacos. Great service. A must stop when visiting Mexico City. I stoped by like 3 times while in the city

Yelp
Taqueria Gabriel is a solid taco spot that has continued to grow and do well over the past few years. They have delicious decently sized tacos that come packaged well. Decent sauce game as they have 4-5 sauces along with a salted lightly spiced chips. Good service. Both indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
Great little hidden gem. Amazing food, full of locals, and you can't beat the price. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Food was really good!! We were on our way back to our Airbnb after hot air balloon tour but was stopped by the protest. Randomly walked into this place but food was beyond our expectation. I especially recommend the taco that has pineapple in it, as well as the shrimp taco. When we went, there's also a waiter who speaks English and translated the menu for us, which made our lives a lot easier.

Yelp
Listen and listen carefully... Get you some shrimp tacos on flour tortillas with a daiquiri on the side. As you're waiting for your food tap into the chips BUT you must had the refried beans to it. All of that combined is a game changer! Don't let them punk you though and give a tiny bit of refried beans. Call them or and make them top you off before you dives in or they'll try to charge you for another cup. Thank me later!

Yelp
Great last night in CDMX. The server was nice, the seating was ideal, the food came quickly. I night hongos( mushrooms) and camarones (shrimp) I would get these again and again. I highly recommend, not far from the Sheraton or Sofitel. With the trip!!

Yelp
I was able to eat here twice, the day that it was less crowded we got great service and the food came super quick. Their pastor tacos, their sauces and chips, and their papa asada was delicious! The second time around it was so busy that the others kept coming in wrong. Food was good either way. Definitely something to try. It seems to be a popular place, I notice that there were several orders that were picked up. So, if you don't feel like waiting...call delivery.

Yelp
With so many taquerias in CDMX is hard to choose one. I am glad we came here! We were worried we were going to leave CDMX without tasting a good taco! The campechano is the bomb!! Service was nice Music was also nice We had a great evening here

Yelp
Great tacos. Great aguas. Great place. Every protein we tried was excellent and the salsas just enhanced the experience. Will be definitely recommending to others.

Yelp
Great tasting tacos. I can only speak for the shrimp and the pastor, but the flavor were definitely there. They also give you lots of sauces on the side. Authentic Coke products by the bottle. Great service. The only reason I'm not at 5 stars is because of the tortillas. They're kind of soggy, which is weird and not a problem I've encountered anywhere else in Mexico. And I've traveled over 2/3 of the country.

Yelp
So I've been vegan now for three years but the Trompo de Adobada (pork taco) ended up on my plate and it was so worth the deviation. I figured when in Mexico might as well eat like the locals. I also had the hongos ( mushroom) and camaron (shrimp) and they were just as good. It's so interesting to see how authentic tacos are small compared to tacos in the states. We have much to learn from our brothers and sisters across the border. Loads of sauces where included too. A Modelo Negra completed a perfect meal. The staff was very helpful and friendly for this gringo!

Yelp
Great street tacos, atmosphere and beer, definitely try this places, purely awesome!!!

Yelp
This place was the first spot I went to after landing and it gave me such a good first impression! The tacos were melt in your mouth. I got the carne and shrimp tacos. Comes with an array of salsas. The staff was so nice even though there was a language barrier (my fault).

Jim V.

Yelp
When I told the receptionist at the hotel I was heading here she said NO! Across the street, next to Aéro México, is a place called Don Abel. That's where you need to go. Huge arrachera tacos and MUCH more. Also Tacos Cocuyo. Oh yeah, the taco shop next to Gabriel is excellent too.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Best tacos in CDMX hands down. We tried over 10 spots in a week here and this place was the best. Try the trompo de asada and the camaron.

Yelp
Great food, super friendly staff, and fast service!! We will definitely go back again!

Natalie R.

Yelp
The tortillas came out cold and burnt form one side. The food was disappointing from chilles al carive having soy sauce to tortillas falling apart from holding them. The salsas was good as well and the papa asada but overall not a four star restaurant. The service was good with the food arriving quickly but it wasn't worth it when the quality of the food was poor. The area were the drinks were made was messy and didn't seem clean with dirty drink glasses everywhere. I had high expectations for this restaurant and didn't want to write this review but I honestly felt extremely let down today.

Maria R.

Yelp

Yelp
What a great surprise- just walked past and dropped in - for sure I'd come back!! We ordered each and every taco - solid meal for 2 and all great!!

Anon O.

Yelp
Just go. Seriously. I'm from LA and thought I'd had great tacos before but this place changed me. Get the tostaditas adobadas (if they don't automatically bring them to the table) and the volcano tacos. Very reasonably priced and excellent service with a nice outdoor patio.

Alexander H.

Yelp
Get everything on the menu, for real! So good that we came back multiple times on our trip to Mexico City. Volcano-style tacos and gabylocos were wonderful!

Torey B.

Yelp
Amazing burritos! I looked all over CDMX for a chicken burrito and fell in love with theirs. Great fun and relaxing atmosphere and awesome servers. Highly recommend!!!

Susie K.

Yelp
Christian our server was very attentive and friendly! Great tacos that you can mix and match! Try the volcanes, similar to tostadas! Great local food and drinks! A must try in Mexico City

T S.

Yelp
Fantastic atmosphere, charming - almost perfect - taco shop. Pollo, suadero and beef were all fantastic. Great margaritas and amazing service

Bret W.

Yelp
Decided to try it, for the relaxed vibe and outdoor seating. Wasn't prepared for the explosive flavors in every dish we ordered -- and we ordered a lot. Jugo de carne, chiles caribe, lots of tacos. Mezcal, micheladas. The flight of salsas was fantastic.

Yelp
AWESOME tacos, try the campechana or trompo with a flour tortilla. Delicious! But a word of warning--of the 5 times we've visited in small groups, our order has come out wrong 4 times and the waitstaff take time fixing it- eg bringing 1 taco instead of 3, bringing the wrong kind, forgetting one persons food entirely, etc. So plan ahead to spend a little extra time there
