Now that I've been here a few times, this place has grown on me and is solidly in my top 3 taquerias in town.
I have had some minor inconsistencies with some of the meat, sometimes they are amazing and sometimes they are less flavorful and dry or chewy. They are never bland though, not even close! Service varies as well, though my last visit was excellent!
Parking is a real problem, at least on weekends and weekday evenings. People make up their own parking spots in the lot, leaving a lot of room between cars, but robbing another 3 cars from being able to park at all. The residential street fills up very quickly. It's gotten to the point that I don't plan to go here, but check the parking lot as we are driving by.
Those inconsistencies and the inconvenient parking are the only reason this place isn't a solid 5 stars. It's definitely 4 1/2 stars because of the food though. Did those things seem like they should have been worth more than half a star? Well, you're right, but that's how good the food is!
If you want a consistent 5 star experience with the best items in town, then you need to order a carnitas gordita, horchata and a churro. Seriously, those three can't be beat anywhere else in Denton and are on point every single time. I'm a bit obsessed with which taqueria has the best of what and these items will maximize the yummy level of your visit.
The carnitas are incredibly flavorful and tender, they melt in your mouth while managing to give you a crisp texture contrast that is delightful. They are good as a taco too, but this place runs small on the tacos so I feel the gordita, with it's beautiful crispy deliciousness, is the way to experience the carnitas. The gorditas are more filling than they look. I usually get tacos and rice too, but that always ends up being too much food.
They actually have a lot of churro options, such as strawberry, but I've only ever had the plain and I think they are usually better here than anywhere else. They taste as if they are made fresh daily and are very soft in the center.
The horchata- gaahhhh, soooo delicious it hurts!!! Do not bother with their agua fresca, it's doesn't taste like they make them in house and doesn't stack up to the competition, but that horchata is amazing! As I'm writing this, I'm craving that horchata so bad, it really is some of the best you will ever try.
The rice is pretty good, nothing special but always up to par. Everything else we've had has varied from visit to visit. The chicken was a little dry last time, but this is consistently my second favorite and is typically cooked very well.
The barbacoa is pretty good here with great flavor and texture, but tends to be on the greasy side. The asada is pretty tasty, but seems to run on the chewy side. These things aren't necessarily bad, but worth mentioning so you can make your decision based on your own preference. I've only had the pastor here on two occasions and it was either flavorful but extremely greasy or less flavorful and pretty dry.
Since the tacos are smaller here, they are not as good of a value as other places are. The street tacos are basically baby tacos here. The main benefit of getting the tacos is to supplement your meal and be able to try multiple meats. Then, even if one of the meats is only okay that day, you're going to try a variety of delicious food and it's still going to be a satisfying meal.
The tortas here don't run as big as other places in town either. In my opinion you are still going to get full, but they don't measure up in portion to other locations.
Seating is limited so I've almost always taken it to go. However, the experience is best when you can dine in, the food is extra delicious. There are only about 7 or 8 tables, but I recently discovered they have bar seating behind the partition (technically in the convenience store) and all that seating was available on my last visit despite every table being full. So when you're ordering at the counter, tell them you are dining in.
Denton is blessed with many taquerias, but not all taquerias are created equal. This is a solid option in town for some fantastic food and ranks higher on my list than many of them. If you are a fan of either carnitas or horchata, then this is a must try or you'll never forgive yourself!
