"More details are emerging about downtown’s incoming all-day Mexican cafe Taqueria Local, which has some heavy hitters from D.C.’s clubbing industry at the helm. The new fast-casual eatery, moving into the shuttered Eatsa space at 1627 K Street NW, is projected to open in March with a lineup of tacos, tostadas, burritos, salads, sides, soups, and desserts. The owner behind the new restaurant is nightlife guru Antonis Karagounis, who runs Echostage, Decades, Barcode, Ultrabar, Soundcheck, and L8. Partners Arman Amirshahi and Karagounis have tapped their longtime chef Giovanni Orellana to run Taqueria’s kitchen. A native of El Salvador, Orellana has cooked locally at Ceviche, Lima, Pesce, Posto, and most recently, Barcode, where his weekly taco special was a top seller. Future menu highlights at Taqueria include tacos with spicy Mexican sausage or roasted beets, and tostadas featuring mango-habanero shrimp. Also expect towering nachos, grilled Mexican street corn, and tortilla soup. Diners can wash it all down with aguas frescas, bottled Mexican sodas, flavored margaritas, beer, and wine. The taco shop plans to give back a portion of breakfast, lunch, and dinner tabs, with 1 percent of yearly revenue going to early childhood education center CentroNía (where Orellana’s son went to school), along with other local initiatives. “It feels amazing knowing that I will be able to give back to a community that has given me so much,” says Orellana." - Tierney Plumb

So......I saw this place on Instagram and from the pictures couldnt wait to go! So on this fine taco Tuesday I decided today was the day. It was $1 dollar off tacos for happy hour and $6 margaritas SOLD!!! We ordered a wide variety of tacos because I'm greedy and I was very hungry. Needless to say the tacos were extremely DISAPPOINTING! They lacked flavor and the ones that did have a flavor just seemed like the wrong flavor profile. Everything tasted like it was left over from the lunch rush. The fish in the fish tacos were hard and cold. All the other tacos were also cold and dry. Even the appetizer elote corn was lackluster. We sat outside and got ate up by mosquitos which seemed to follow us inside once we couldn't take it outside anymore. Furthmore, the place where trash and trays are discarded is also the same counter top where the napkins are dispensed from but not from a separate unit it come right out of the counter top where dirty trays are slid across. The utensils dispenser was right above it. Didn't seem too sanitary to me but it wasn't the worst thing in the world. So all in all I wouldn't eat here or recommend this place. I gave it two stars because the margarita was decent and the service was pretty fast.

5 stars aren’t enough. Tacos are a 10/10 with so many options and the appetizers are to die for. Can’t wait to go back for more ! Oh and they offer Frozen Margaritas Extra Gold Points!!

Nope, just nope. I'm floored with my fellow local guides review of this place, I checked the reviews out before heading that way and decided to give them a shot despite preferring not to eat somewhere with less than 4 stars (I like my gut in tact at the end of a meal). I got the Shredded Beef Salad and it was a major disappointment and a waste of $13. The barbacoa meat had to be the DRIEST I've tasted (I made 4 coworkers try it to make sure i wasn't off base, 1 person spit the bite out). You literally choked trying to swallow this thing. The flavor of the meat was disgusting. A thick, smokey, old tasting marinade. The beans and corn on the salad came straight out of a can. Zero effort, zero seasoning. The ONLY salad dressing option which doesnt get mixed in (thank God in hindsight) is "chipotle" dressing and is spicy as hell! as dressings go, sorry not how I like to eat a salad. The lettuce was barely cut up and there was lots of water pooling in the bottom of the bowl. Totally gross, will not return. My coworkers got the shrimp bowl and the shrimp had zero flavor (again lack of prep and seasoning). Chips were decent. Hard pass!

The carnitas taco is very good here. The place doesn't score well in reviews, despite the food being pretty solid. The only issue is that it's expensive. They call their tacos 'artisanal' and slap a $4.50 per taco price on it. It's three bites.

I don't know if there was a change in ownership, but today I received the worst $10 salad ever. Only a few ingredients and yet the lettuce was the only fresh ingredient. Why are you serving Gordon's fish patties from your grocers freezer🤔? Pic of my salad already in the trash. I ordered guacamole and chips, but after a few bites I trashed that too. It didn't taste bad, but I had an eery feeling about it. I typically don't like to give bad reviews, but this was a waste of $17 for lunch.

Delicious! I had the bowl and it was very tasty. Restaurant is clean and the staff was friendly. If you're looking for some good Mexican eats head here. They also serve alcohol. 👍

Tried out Taqueria Local for the first time today. I chose a pollo taco and the barbacoa taco and both were delicious but the chicken was definitely my favorite. It came with pico on it even though the menu didn’t say so but I’m glad it did. I will definitely be back for more chicken tacos and a margarita!
