Taqueria Los Mayas Review - Richmond - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The moment you step inside Taqueria Los Mayas, it’s clear you’re about to have a positive experience. This counter-service Mexican restaurant specializes in food from the Yucatán, and the menu here is, simply put, lengthy and exciting—they do everything from gigantic, made-to-order empanadas to seafood dishes to burritos and tacos with homemade tortillas. One thing that makes this spot so special is you can’t go wrong with whatever you order. The other reason is their tender cochinita pibil and poc choc, which you should get on the tostada-like panucho—a fried, bean-filled tortilla topped with meat, cabbage, and pickled red onion." - Lani Conway

I took my daughter here for dinner during peak dinner hours. We were sat very quickly. The food came out fast and the waiter was nice. My criticisms: IF YOU’RE A VEGETARIAN: There could definitely be more options. Fake meat is a great alternative that many Mexican restaurants offer, but they don’t. You can choose from a vegetable fajita’s or a quesadilla for dinner if you don’t eat meat. I personally wish there were different vegetables in the grilled veggie quesadilla (includes zucchini, mushrooms, and corn). Perhaps onions, jalapeños, peppers and cheese would make it better and more filling — instead of mushrooms and zucchini. They’re not my favorite, mushrooms make everything wet. You’ll also feel full within the hour of eating it as you’re not getting protein. OTHER CRITICISMS: • CHIP BOWL REFILLS COSTS EXTRA • Rice and beans don’t come with your dinner. It’s extra. • Sour cream is extra. Kind of feels like nickel and diming. • It’s expensive, roughly $20 for each dinner, not including drink or tip. Dinner includes lettuce, small dollop of sour cream, not rice or beans. You’ll spend about $70 for two without alcohol. • It was also very loud and I am never a fan of being in the center aisle, all squeezed in for seating. My daughter, ordered a pork burrito and mango Margarita, she loved everything about it. But all around I would definitely go here again, and I would recommend it. Though I don’t like the extra charges.

Google
Stumbled a crossed this hidden gem last week in Buffalo. I chose this restaurant because of its google review and it did not disappoint, they are worth every star they’ve earned and possibly some more! The food came out so fast, so fresh and so delicious. They even have a cute little salsa bar to dress your tacos to your liking. The portions are huge so we had plenty to take home for lunch the next day. P.s. My Mexican friend can vouch for the authenticity of the food we had.

Parking is kind of a nightmare. Understand that you can park on the Union Rd side of the restaurant. It’s very tight and not much space to move. Also people will pull through the entrance to the restaurant which is a driveway rhis makes it very dangerous. The food is authentic MexicanI’m food and mostly tastes delicious. Our waitress Laura S was prompt and courteous. The meals were a bit overpriced for what you get. I had the Pork Chimichanga which was really good. My daughter had the chicken fingers and they were terrible overcooked and like rocks as seen in the picture. Just because they are for a child don’t think they don’t know the difference. My wife had the enchiladas rancheras and my son had 4 molida tacos. They both enjoyed them. We had fried ice cream which was really good. There is a salsa bar which our server never told us about.

Google
This is probably one of the best Mexican spots I’ve ever been to. I noticed they didn’t leave the tables with plates after a guest left for more than 30 seconds. I had the al pastor tocos but want to go back and try the margarita since so many reviews mention it. This spot is great

Google
Simply amazing. The food was fantastic and authentic. We were part of a large group of eleven people on a Saturday night. They took care of us as if we were a party of four. In short the service was excellent. This a great place!

I’m visiting from New York City and enjoying my time at Niagara Falls. As a passionate food lover and someone with experience cooking various cuisines—including authentic Mexican food—I did my homework, reading several Google reviews before choosing this restaurant. Unfortunately, I can only give it 3 stars. While the service was decent, the food leaned heavily toward Americanized Mexican cuisine, lacking the authentic flavors I’m used to, especially compared to what’s available in NYC. The biggest letdown was the salsas—all of them were overly salty and missed the traditional balance of flavors that define true Mexican cooking. I leave Buffalo a bit disappointed in my search for genuine Mexican taste. If you're looking for authenticity, this might not be the spot.

Google
It was your typical Americanized Mexican restaurant—colorful decor, friendly staff, fresh handmade tortillas, and house-made salsa. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. That said, if you’ve traveled around the country, you start to notice that a lot of these places taste very similar unless you’re in regions closer to the border or across it, where authentic spices, techniques, and bold flavors truly shine. Based on the volume of reviews and its strong local reputation, I can see why it’s rated as highly as it is. Overall, it was good and enjoyable, but it didn’t quite live up to the expectations I had going in.

Update: 4/2025 This was one of our favorite Mexican restaurants until our recent visit. When you walk in, there are signs posted everywhere that if you use a visa credit card, you'll have to pay a 6% fee. We had a party of 5. Our waitress was not very friendly. When I received the bill, there was an automatic gratuity charge of 18% which was $30. I wasn't aware of this as I did not see anything on the menu about this charge. So basically, the waitress was able to treat us poorly because she knew she would get the gratuity regardless. The bill also asked for an additional tip. The prices on the menu have also increased dramatically. For 4 adults and 1 child to eat, our bill was over $200 (no alcohol was purchased). Will not be returning. If you're looking for an awesome Mexican restaurant, I highly recommend El Jefe in West Seneca. Food and drinks were great. The staff is very friendly and we love coming here. Would definitely go back. Best Mexican Restaurant ever!

Yelp
Amazing, and authentic Mexican food, good service and prices. I recommend! I had chilles relleno and my friend had fajitas with shrimp, chicken, and chorizo. Mine was great, his was better!

Yelp
TLM is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Buffalo and I bring everyone I know here to spread the good word about their delicious cuisine. I've gone through quite a few items on the menu, but always end up going back for the tacos. My current favorite is to get two nopal and potato tacos and one chorizo, then combine the fillings and top with lots of fresh lime. Pair with a coronarita for maximum indulgence and make sure you have a DD to get you home safely. The menu is large enough that anyone can find something to enjoy and the service is typically quick and efficient. Don't be surprised to have a wait if you come during the dinner rush or on a weekend, but the food will definitely be worth it!

Yelp
Just omg! Probably some of the best Mexican outside of California! I love the enchiladas and steak quesadillas!! Worth the wait (I usually call ahead) I have ordered to take home and it's just as good!! The horchata is yum!
google avatar

Yelp
Always authentic and portions are large! Delish and service is Usually going about 5pm To beat the dinner crowd is best to assure a table without waiting!

Yelp
I had been wanting to try this restaurant out for a while after seeing very positive reviews. Count me in as a fan for the Mexican food here! I had the fajitas, which were very good. Chicken was flavored nicely... mixed with peppers and onions. A plate full of lettuce, tomato, sour cream and a guacamole salad were the ingredients to load into your fajita. It all came together for two delicious fajitas. I only wish it came with a third fajita as I had plenty of chicken and veggies left after devouring the two fajitas. My dish was served with beans and rice which were also very good. I also liked the complimentary salsa and chips that came before the meal. Salsa was delicious! The service was fine. Our waiter refilled my drink without being prompted. He also was very helpful when I realized I had used the wrong credit card ... reworking the transaction without a second thought. Much appreciated!! It was busy inside the restaurant and the atmosphere was fun .... Colorful and inviting! Plenty of booths available when we arrived ... but they seemed to fill up rather quickly for a weekday.... But still had some open booths while we dined. There is a parking lot with ample parking just past the restaurant on union... so don't try to park on Genesee street. I would definitely recommend!!

Yelp
This continues to be my most favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. Even though this wont compare to those in the South or Southwest, this is as good as it gets in the Buffalo area. The food is good, the prices are reasonable, the staff is friendly, the place is clean, and the service is efficient.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely incredible- such flavorful amazing dishes. Tried the chicken enchilada and fajitas- very generous portions and both came with a full plate of rice beans and salad! The chips and salsa were also so fresh and overall we were so happy we found this place!

Yelp
These might be some of my favorite tacos in Buffalo. Yes they did have toppings added on top of the meat but they were smelled so good, my phone only grabbed these pictures before I had to dig in. We were craving some tacos and this spot is right around the corner. We each had 3 tacos, and some chips with salsa. We called ahead for pick up. Our order was done so quick and was ready right when we got there. They were spot on with their timing. The tacos themselves were delicious. I think this might be my favorite al pastor taco ever. The pineapple complimented the meat perfectly and wasn't overpowering for the taco either. The carne asada and chorizo tacos were great as well. The ambience in the restaurant is nice too. It feels like a little cantina and the staff were all super friendly when I went to pick up our order. Needless to say, we found our new taco spot.

Yelp
Been here many times and have always had the best service and the best Mexican food in the area. This is my go to place for quality Mexican food. Love it
google avatar

Nikki G.

Yelp
This is THE best place for Mexican. I have had the carnitas at several other establishments in the area, and had enjoyed them, but this place truly takes the number one spot in taste. On this particular visit, I had the carnitas and my fiance had a burrito because he panicked and a victoria beer from Oaxaca. Service is great and so fast, in case you have to get some place quick, and the ambiance is bright, colorful and fun. I have never had a bad meal here.

Yelp
Busy spot! We were happy to get a table but wow was it lively and packed. Came on recommendation from a friend. Birria was good, came with a whole bowl of consume like a soup bowl! Tamarind margarita came with a classic tajin straw which I really liked to see. The red and green sauce on the burritos was good and both the red and green sauces were delicious. Meat had a good grill flavor. Elevated Buffalo Mexican if I've ever had it. Prices seemed high but quality was there so I didn't mind paying it.
google avatar

Debbie S.

Yelp
Had the chicken pastor taco on a soft tortilla and the avocado salad, it was absolutely delicious My mom had the bean and cheese burrito and my mom said it was a 10!

Joseph K.

Yelp
Great food fast service and clean restaurant. We had green chili mix with rice and beans. It was super.

Michael O.

Yelp
The food and service are much better than expected. This is a very busy local go-to. They frequently have issues keeping up with the demand (especially to-go orders) because they're so very busy. We live quite a ways away but do enjoy stopping in here for dinner when in the area. Excellent food, very good service (when dining in.)
google avatar

Nicole K.

Yelp
we love coming here the staff is amazing they got the door for me and moved their reception post so I could get past easyiI love the design of restaurant and it's not loud you can hear everyone at your table talk and the food is great!! I look forward to coming back and trying new dishes!!

Yelp
First of all, if you give this place less than five stars you should not be eating Mexican food--you don't like it. I travel all over the US for work an find many good, but not great. Mexican places similar to those great ones all over Southern California where I once lived. I miss those taquerias, carnacerica counters, and Mexican restaurants of the LA area. This place is on point. Everything I have tried while working in the area is, well, incredible. The asada. The pastor. The Melinesa....and on and on. It's literally all great.

Yelp
Fantastic home cooked authentic Mexican food with awesome margaritas! Consistently awesome food and service ! We've been here several time and you can count of great , flavorful hot food! Good portions fresh flavors. One of our go to Mexican go to places,. Once again I was so excited to start eating this delectable food I forgot my food pics, I'll try next time hehe!
google avatar

Deb K.

Yelp
I had steak fajitas, and they were amazing! Steak was cooked perfect, and you get a choice between soft tortillas, and corn ones. My friend had the steak nachos and she really enjoyed them. The service is always friendly. It's a little tough to get around to a table with a wheelchair, but they were very accommodating. Would highly recommend them.
google avatar

Christa N.

Yelp
Best Mexican food in the area! Friendly staff, good menu selection, decent prices and traditional Mexican restaurant decor.
google avatar

Maria G.

Yelp
Part of me wants to keep this place a secret so I can have it all to myself! But I have to spread the word that if you want truly authentic Mexican food, this is the ONLY place you will find that. My go to is the ceviche and pork tacos. The portions are generous and DELICIOUS. The condiments bar is the best. I love to load up on cilantro and the habanero pico de gallo. They always have ice cold horchata which many other places do not. They have great Tamales too. The only thing I which they had is pupusas!! But I can't complain too much because everything else is always so freaking good.
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
The food was pretty good but not amazing. One of the better Texmix places in buffalo. Comes with big portions which is nice. Churros were decent. Vibes are happy and good. Come for the vibe!
google avatar

Johnny N.

Yelp
Good service. Outstanding tacos! Had the carne asada, carnitas and Al pastor. Best tacos I've had in 8 years living in NY Highly recommended!
google avatar

Kevn R.

Yelp
What a great place to eat. Food, Service, and the outstanding people ! The food is what Mexican should be. I will be back many more times to try more & more of the extensive menu.

Yelp
Yes, they serve 1 free basket of WARM tortillas chips w/ salsa! I don't think any Mexican restaurants do that here anymore. This place has been bookmarked for quite some time and I finally had a chance to check it out on one of my trips to Buff! They do have lunch specials M-F from 1-3pm, so if you can, this would probably be a better time to check it out to save a few bucks. I ordered Arro de Pollo ($20) and it was definitely enough for 2ppl! Special la Casa (2 burritos with a white cheese sauce on top) was also a good portion, but can be finished by 1 hungry person. Although very tasty, the Arro de Pollo was quite salty. As an Asian Canadian, I find most American food heavy on the salt. Server was friendly. Good, but salty! Catch the lunch specials if possible.

Travis B.

Yelp
I regularly travel to Buffalo for business and have been struggling to find a good Mexican restaurant in the area. Taqueria Los Mayas is hands down the best I have found. I ordered the mixed fajitas lunch special which was delicious. Fast service, great atmosphere. If you're visiting and want something next to authentic, look no further.
google avatar

Steven P.

Yelp
What a place! It was hopping with a fun staff and a great crowd. The foods not too bad even by my New Mexico standards, it's been softened a bit to fit the regional tastes which is not unusual for "Mexican." Large menus with all the favorites. The margaritas are HUGE. If you're staying by the airport Los Mayas is not too far away and definitely worth the visit.

Darlene F.

Yelp
Had an issue with our order. They promptly made it right and we were very pleased with their response. The staff was friendly and courteous.

Yelp
A Mexican foodie haven ! Authentic, friendly service and fun ambiance. Always Fantastic!

Yelp
I failed to get pictures of our feast. Positive Yelp reviews drew us to this great place. I went in and ordered at the bar. The decor is appropriate and nicely appointed. The bar looks like it's well stocked. We ordered birria tacos, refried beans, and guacamole. Everything was great! Definitely would go back!
google avatar

Patrick D.

Yelp
Really great Mexican! Came in with some friends and had a really good meal. The service was good, the meal was excellent, and the vibe is kinda neutral - nothing fancy. They have draft beer, good margaritas, and a good bar selection, too. I had their quesadilla grande (steak, chicken, shrimp). Loved it!!
google avatar

Kellie L.

Yelp
Food is absolutely amazing!! Staff and servers are on point!! Environment is perfect. Always very busy. Drinks are also amazing!! Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Jess S.

Yelp
The food was DELICIOUS! We ordered the chori quezo for an app... omg delish! I ordered the fajitas los mayas which included beef, chicken, shrimp and chorizo in the fajitas. I would highly recommend if you'd like to try multiple meats. The service was quick! We were told a 30-35 min wait and were seated within 20 min. The waiter was friendly and checked up on us just enough. The cost of the food is incredibly reasonable considering how big the portions are. The ambiance is loud and family friendly. We were promptly asked if we needed a booster seat/high chair for the kids and provided with one quickly. The inside is beautifully decorated with authentic and colorful Mexican decor. I loved it!
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
Can't say enough great things about this place. I don't even get Mexican food anywhere else in WNY. Food is always delicious and I've been making my way around the menu. I usually get a margarita and I love how many flavors you can get it in. The staff are always friendly and give great service.
google avatar

Danielle S.

Yelp
I went on a Tuesday...taco Tuesday...it was packed. We had a group of 4 adults 2 kids, they told us 30 minutes, it was definitely less than that for our wait. We were sat at a table in the center where you could see all the decorations and bright colors everywhere which just made me so cheery. Music was not too loud so you could still talk with each other. The front of the restaurant looks like it's on one street then parking on another but it all ties in with the parking lot. I must say the hostess and servers were very accommodating, friendly and granted and requests we had quickly. The food was AMAZING! I had the chori queso, the Birria tacos and fajita los Mayas. No complaints about any of those choices.
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
Amazing food, fun atmosphere, nice staff. What else could you ask for?!? This is our go-to for Mexican food. The servings are ample and everything always tastes amazing. The only downside is how small it is. Because the food is so good, it's busy which means there is often a wait. But don't be discouraged - the wait is worth it!
google avatar

Sabra R.

Yelp
Never a slow evening here at Los Mayos! Always the same excellent quality food, friendly service and Fiesta atmosphere! I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal here! I would tell you my favorite item but have not finished the extensive menu! Whatever your favorite Mexican meal is, they do it best! Highly recommended!
google avatar

Ryli C.

Yelp
My sister in law has been talking this place up for years and I finally tried it out. Great overall experience. Service was great, a pitcher of cucumber jalapeño (special) margaritas, quesadilla fundida with chips and chori queso to start all combined for the perfect filled belly. Delicious!
google avatar

Faith M.

Yelp
The best Mexican food ever! No where else compares. Great service too. It's a smaller place - they have a waitlist you can go on and you get a text when your table is ready. Highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Jaelynne H.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! My boyfriend and I will always have this place as our first pick for Mexican for dinner! Definitely recommend to anyone.

Jas D.

Yelp
Amazing place. Family run, very friendly and amazing food and drinks. Recommended and close to the airport.
google avatar

Luis C.

Yelp
What doesn't go well. The service is amazing. The food is delicious. And vibes are always on point. Aside from my mother's cooking this is the next best Mexican food.

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Servings are huge. Delish food and a great atmosphere. Will definitely be back. Cold beer. Salsa and chips are fresh
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican cuisine. Staff is friendly and accommodating. We had a large group of 15 and they made sure our table was ready and we had chips and salsa. The food was made to order and everything was delicious. I would recommend Taqueria Los Mayas to anyone and everyone. Kudos !!!!
google avatar

Kantivut C.

Yelp
It was a good dining experience overall, felt like I was in the West Coast's restaurant. Ambiance and service was good. Great menu and price. Although the food is high in sodium than I expected or used to. They probably aimed for selling more alcoholic beverages. Of course the more thirsty you get the more likely you will drink. I'll be back because not often I find a good Mexican restaurant near by.
google avatar

Lisa J.

Yelp
Wow! Went today on Cinco de Mayo and it was unbelievable! Probably the best Mexican food I've had around here. Very different than other Mexican restaurants, but everything taste homemade. Nothing tastes, frozen. I cannot wait to go back! I went with my husband and my son and we all had different dishes, and all of us had clean plates! Highly recommend. Not only was the food absolutely delicious, but the waitresses were very sweet and kind and took the time to talk to you. Great customer service.

Yelp
I believe our reunion with Taqueria Los Mayas was just an unfortunate false start. After being seated at the bar, we decided to have fast tacos and keep moving. Not so fast amigo... Waiting for the simplest thing at a Mexican restaurant for over half an hour was a crime. Everyone around who even came after us received their food, but not us. Vividly we were part of someone's mistake. Of the five choices, Pollo Asada was the best. It could easily compete and win with any place around. I wouldn't bother to order Al Pastor again. With no sign of pineapple and being over-salted it wasn't anything good. Nopal Con Papas was served with frozen crinkle french fries. Why? This place was constantly busy and it was too crowded around the bar area. Next time I would rather wait for a regular table or booth and be able to relax. Our server/bartender was just too cool, jumpy and very busy. He didn't care much about providing simple things like napkins or having good control over the food orders. He should have had some help if the bar counter was treated as extra dining tables.
google avatar

Nicole F.

Yelp
Friendly staff, was seated quickly and the food came out hot and quick. Two of us ordered a pitcher of margaritas to split to save some money and it was worth it. The margs were cold and refreshing, I asked for jalapenos on the side to make my marg spicy, they gave me a big dish of sliced jalapenos however I discovered most of them had mold growing on them, I did not bring it to the waiter's attention. I ordered 3 single tacos - carnitas, chicken, and barbacoa. I really enjoyed the carnitas, I found the meat full of flavor and just really enjoyable. The barbacoa has a sweet taste to it which I didn't really enjoy that much. My boyfriend got the Special La Casa = one burrito with chicken and one with barbacoa topped with queso blanco. He seemed to have no complaints as it was devoured quite quickly. They have a salsa bar with some topics where you can serve yourself. They have lunch specials M-F 11-3p

Yelp
Taqueria Los Mayas has been my #1 favorite Mexican restaurant since it opened. You walk in there and smell sauteed steak and peppers, and the aroma of fresh salsa. So good! My favorite is their Chimichanga. Fried and ground beef. And their Spanish rice is to die for. Most places go blah on the flavor and you can tell because the rice is yellow. When it's orange and the scent hits you in the face, you know the flavor is there. The service is also quite amazing. BTW, if you order a margarita, pace yourself. They don't skimp on the booze.
