"If you head to this colorful BYOB on the weekend, you’ll find a handful of people staring at the colorful chalkboard menu trying to decide between the birria or al pastor tacos (spoiler alert: get both). And that’s because what Philly lacks in driving etiquette or a good hockey team we make up for in excellent South Philly taquerias like this one. The tacos here are packed with so much delicious meat, chunks of avocado, cactus, and salsa, that it’s a guaranteed fork, knife, and napkin operation. Come with a group of friends and share an order of tender steak topped with chihuahua cheese, ribeye with queso fresco, or peppery chicken on a bed of warm corn tortillas. "This quaint Mexican restaurant near Snyder Station makes the best tortas in Philly, but we also love the tacos de alambre–they combine juicy spiced chicken, crisp red and green peppers, chihuahua cheese, bacon, and fried onions. If you head there in the afternoon, you’ll find a handful of people staring at the menu on the colorful chalkboard trying to decide between the birria or al pastor tacos (spoiler alert: get both). They’re both under $15, which is not bad considering you’re getting paid for the day and haven’t answered a single Slack. " - candis mclean, alison kessler
"Taqueria Morales is like the Superman of South Philly Mexican restaurants. The quaint corner spot quietly serves great tortas and tacos, but when it rips open its shirt and tosses its glasses, it makes juicy, over-stuffed birria tacos in a crispy tortilla cape. The consomme is also noticeably thicker and richer than most others on this list. These tacos don’t come with cheese, but you can (and should) add it on for the ultimate queso-pulling experience." - alison kessler

At night, it can get more lively with families and a few groups of friends passing around bowls of spicy guacamole before sharing the bone-in ribeye on a bed of blue corn tlacoyos. "The Meal: Al Pastor Torta, $12 Taqueria Morales is just across the street from Snyder Station, so you can get a bunch of tortas here for less than a weekly reload on your SEPTA Key. The standout is the al pastor torta, filled with adobo-glazed pork, avocado, chiles, and lettuce, all cupped by a soft teleras roll. Eat a few inside with friends, or take the meaty creation with you on your way home. Snyder Station could use a scent that’s not wafting from the overserved crowd heading to The Linc.
