The Best Tacos in San Diego, According to a Local Food Expert | Eater San Diego

"While this upstart taqueria is no longer in border-adjacent San Ysidro, it still slings Tijuana-style tacos that are as real as it gets. Named after Tijuana’s Boulevard Revolución, also known as “La Revo,” this restaurant came into fruition when co-owner and San Diego native Emilio Támez joined forces with his friend, fellow cook, and co-owner Jeremy Sosnoff, who both dreamed of serving stellar tacos in San Diego. Just like many taquerias south of the border, diners can get their fill of tacos and even tortas loaded with carne asada, pork, and chicken adobada, as well as fresh guacamole and salsa. The quesatacos are a fan favorite — they’re delivered in a warm, homemade tortilla filled with cheese and the diner’s choice of meat. Diners looking to upgrade their meal can order a side of rice, beans, and birria consomé. The popular Bonita location is right off the 805 and has plenty of seating, fast service, and a sleek interior with views of the griddle and rotating trompo." - Roxana Becerril

Where to Eat Mexican Food in the South Bay | Eater San Diego

"Tijuana-style street tacos are traditionally charcoal-grilled steak (carne asada) on a fresh corn tortilla, topped with cilantro, onion, freshly squeezed lime juice, and generous dollops of creamy guacamole and salsa. This business came to be when co-owner and San Diego native Emilio Támez, who grew up in the South Bay, united with his friend, fellow cook and co-owner Jeremy Sosnoff, to bring this traditional style of tacos to San Diego. The name Taqueria Revolucion takes after the infamous Boulevard Revolución, also known as “La Revo” in Tijuana. This place is popular enough to have three different locations around the South Bay. Order up tacos, tostadas, and mulitas (in which your choice of meat and melted cheese are sandwiched between two tortillas) to your heart’s content." - Kristin Díaz de Sandi

If you’re looking for truly authentic Mexican food, this place is an absolute gem! From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with warm hospitality and the rich aromas of freshly made tortillas, sizzling carne asada, and perfectly spiced salsas. The menu is packed with traditional dishes that taste like they came straight from a home kitchen in Mexico. The tacos were outstanding—freshly made corn tortillas, tender, flavorful meats, and vibrant toppings that brought everything together. The birria was unbelievably rich and full of flavor, and the homemade guacamole was some of the best I’ve ever had. Service was fast and friendly, and the atmosphere was lively but comfortable. You can tell the chefs take pride in their food, and it shows in every bite. If you’re craving real Mexican cuisine, this spot is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be coming back for more! I also loved the homemade drinks! Kids loved it too! This experience completes my San Diego visit!

Google
I had the birria w/comsume (&quesa birria), carne asada, and adobada tacos. The Birria was the best, carne asada in close second and the adobada right behind. It wasn’t amazing but it wasnt bad by any means. The horchata was good, but overall I’d say too expensive for middle of the line food.

Google
Food was great! Their fresh tortillas will get me to come back. I had mostly asada which I think was too basic of a choice. It wasn't anything special and maybe a little too charred for my preference. But the CARNITAS was so good. So rich and flavorful and juicy but also had crunch to it. The quesa birria tacos were also great and the consome was savory and warm. Overall hit the spot.

Google
A little crowded sometimes but the food is good. Also it is a little pricey. I ordered a Adodobada Mulita thinking it was going to be a decent size. For $10 in is just one taco amount of meat in between two corn tortillas. Definitely the amount you get is not worth $10. I’ve gotten um it’s elsewhere that were huge for the same price. I was a little disappointed and would have rather just ordered two tacos for about the same price. Their California burritos are also $21 which to me is kind of insane. I understand food is more expensive now but you’re better off going down to another taco shop to get the same size burrito for cheaper.

So I've driven by here many times on my way to the dog groomer. We were in the mood for tacos, in the area, and wanted something new/different, so we decided to give it a try. I ordered the adobada burrito and my gf ordered the pollo asada taco, queso taco, and a carne asada taco. First, the service was excellent. The cashier was very polite and helpful, even wiped down the table before we sat down. The food was great. All of it. "No Notes"... . The atmosphere was ok, probably could of been cleaner overall, not alot of seating and a little loud. But the quality of food and service was so good, we ended going back the very next day and again the food was phenomenal. If youre looking for a quality taco shop, this is the one.

Google
Great little place for street style tacos. I ate 3 different types and was very pleased with all of them. I also are beans and rice. The beans were good and the rice was very good. Lots of choices for chili and add one for the tacos.

Google
The Best Asada Tacos in San Diego! Trust me! Get the carne asada tacos and Birria tacos you won't be disappointed! They cook their meat on mesquite wood from Mexico. Fresh carne asada and pollo asodo on the grill. You can taste so much flavor in the asada. The Birria is also very yummy. We also got the revo burrito with pollo adobada and it was amazing! They even had a Randy's donut connected to the restaurant and I got the donut with ice cream in between so fire ! ! Staff was friendly and inside was clean which is always a plus !

Google
This taco shop is right in the little corner plaza , which is very convenient. These tacos were pretty good. The cooks are working effortlessly and multitasking in cooking right in front of you. From the birria to the tacos to the tortas. This place is very popular and the staff is very hard-working.I recommend you try it.

Yelp
This place was recommended by someone who lives in the area. We had this expectation that we would get better tacos here than in LA as it was closer to the border. Don't get us wrong, their tacos were good but it didn't stand out. It was also a bit pricey for what you get. Service was nice. The lady was friendly. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. You walk in, order, pay, they give you a number, and bring you the food. There is a condiment section where you get salsa, pickled onions etc. overall- good food, great service, but pricey.

Yelp
Every time I that I come here it cures my homesickness. I love the customer service, food window that always allows Chefs to showcase their talents! Cold beers and great daily specials keep me coming back! This place has a carne Asada torta with beans that is epic!

Yelp
Still the best!!! Service is slow but these tacos are worth the wait! Probably the best street tacos in SD!

Yelp
This taco shop is a solid choice if you're looking to fill up without breaking the bank. The portions here are huge. Seriously, each taco is packed to the brim with ingredients, so if you're hungry, this is definitely the place to go. The fries are also packed with meat. That said, while the portion sizes are impressive, the tacos themselves are on par with the surrounding competition. All in all, it's a good spot for a quick, filling meal in a clean environment. The tacos are satisfying enough, especially if you're hungry, but don't expect to be blown away. I'd definitely come back when I'm in the mood for something simple and hearty.

Yelp
Tacos were delicious. The inside seating area was a little messy and salsa bar looked unorganized and a little dirty. To be fair, I went later in the afternoon after their lunch rush. I'd still come back for some tacos.

Yelp
Have only been to the Otay mall location, so it was nice to finally try out this one by Plaza Bonita mall! Staff were nice and the food was great as always, but the only reason I'm giving them 4-stars is because they messed up my order. Even after clarifying twice with the cashier, my order came out wrong. Unfortunately, it was too late for us to do anything since we ordered to go, but I think for next time we'll either eat there or check our order before we leave to avoid a repeat issue! Definitely will be coming back, though!

Yelp
Tacos are very delicious and flavorful Highly recommend the Birria ! Tasted very authentic.

Yelp
Not sure what the hype was about, tacos didn't have much on them for being $4. Meat was also really salty. Would rather hit up that taco spot in the downtown Gaslamp area. Service here was good though, place is modern,

Car L.

Yelp
First off , I had to clean my own table to sit . The service was not good at all. Everyone was sort of looking for a place to sit . Because everything was dirty and tables were just left alone un cleaned. Second . The tacos , over done meat. You can tell it was not fresh . And not a Tijuana style with the skimpy amount of guacamole they slithered on it And to finish it off the soda machine was flat .. I wish I was making this review up .. Hopefully the management team will reach out and do some service recovery . Other than that . This review will stay . Here are some pics . For proof

Yelp
This is one of my go to spot for Mexican tacos. The price is decent and the taste is often great. I have recently started having their Protein Tacos. The first time I had them, I was WOWED. This time I was somewhat disappointed. The cooks were slammed with orders. We happen to come at an early dinner rush. So I am going to give them an extra star than I normally would. This time the young cook making the protein tacos, kept burning the cheese. He started over 4 times. He should have asked for help from an experienced cook. All he needed to do was add more cheese and flip them faster. He let them sit to long. Instead of a yellow / brown tent. They had a blackish tent to them. This added that salty taste to the tacos. You will still get that salt taste with the cheese, but this was a little stronger. Always eat some spicy onions to cut the salt. The meat and aguacate etc were great inside the taco. But the protein taco was so small I ate most of it with a fork. The half order of Revo Fries, is very filling. So unless you can eat a lot. Order the half. My wife could not finish it. Today was louder and more crowded than normal. Once I was done eating, it was pretty empty. There is a good amount of seating. Well for small groups and solos. The ambiance is a modern indoor taqueria. I will come back with an update review.

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp. Thought we would try it out. Tacos look good on picture. They also are very tasty in person! Had a mulita, had Sonora tacos , had regular tacos. tried the following meats: adobada, Carnitas, Asada, they were all delicious. will definitely be back.!!

Yelp
If you haven't been here, then what are you waiting for? We've gone to many places for Tijuana style tacos and stood in very long lines. I want to tell you that this is better and not the chaos. We've tried adobada, pollo asado, carnitas, carne asada, and birria. I don't have a favorite, but if I had to pick, pollo asado and adobada. I've had their birria and should have gotten a small. The consimme is so so good. You can sit at the counter and watch them make the tortillas and tacos. I haven't tried the burrito, but it something I would have to share. They have a salsa bar. Taste the mild salsa it may not be for the light weights. The people are so nice. We will keep coming back and next time I'll take pictures of the food.

Yelp
Carne asada Adobada Quick service Easy parking Consome Spacious interior Pretty reliable place in Chula!

Yelp
Hi friends. I come nearly every week here and the tacos are great. But this week they didn't have any guacamole sauce for the adaboda tacos. They only have traditional guacamole. This is a great spot and location and the service is quick and very good but it's been a few days that they don't have the correct sauce for the adaboda tacos. Hopefully management will get this corrected! Thanks as those are my favorite tacos!!
google avatar

Yelp
This is our favorite go to spot in the south Bay. We usually frequent it on our way down to the North Island amphitheater for concerts so we are there sometimes 23 times a week service is always great wonderful and kind.
google avatar

Yelp
Our go to Birria place. Dependable and consistent with flavors. So good. Bummed it's far from home but when we have our Birria craving, we drive to this place. Staff is friendly and service is fast. There was one person behind the counter and handled three orders in record time.
google avatar

Daniela P.

Yelp
The food was nice, the service was great, and the ambience is good. If you're in the area definitely check them out. The horchata was delicious.
google avatar

Remus M.

Yelp
2 tacos(Carne Asada & Chicken adobada)and Mulita (Birria). The salsas were on point. The carne asada was a little salty for me I could only have one of those and the the chicken taco was bomb. The birria Mulita was spicy with good flavor. The meat was juicy. The horchata was really good too. The service was really fast and friendly
google avatar

Yelp
We recently had a family gathering and we needed food fast to keep everyone in good spirits. Taqueria Revolution did not disappoint. We were able to create a build your own taco bar at home from the meats we ordered which made everyone's tummy's happy. We did have to call ahead of time just FYI. We even contemplated on going back to get a second merienda in. The meats were marinated and of course we had to get one spicy. Highly recommend and if you don't need to take something home, plenty of seating at the restaurant.
google avatar

Gabriel P.

Yelp
Great customer service and food. Would recommend the Adobada tacos as well as the birria.
google avatar

Pete C.

Yelp
Good is flavorless and pricey, their salsas are tasteless, the only thing I found authentic was the agua fresca
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
I used to be a regular at this spot because the food is so good but my last few recent visits dropped it down to 4 stars. Waited over 15 mins for my order which is fairly unusual for this spot. Again, 15 minutes isn't bad but compared to Revolucion 2018-2020, it's not as amazing as it used to be and 4.95$ for a single taco is a little steep. Reasons I love this place: the tortillas are soooo good and the meat is fire. Parking: somehow I always manage to get front row parking. What I ordered: carne asada quesa taco (loaded with guac and the normal fixings), rice (16 oz is perfect for family of 3), birria quesa taco (perfectly seasoned and juicy onion/cilantro...doesn't come with guac), adobada (comes with a creamy avocado sauce), and plain carne asada taco (no toppings for my daughter). The normal toppings come with a hint of medium salsa (has a kick and I don't really like anything too spicy but it pairs the tacos perfectly). They have a small salsa bar and I can usually find a table to sit at even when they're busy. I've tried everything on their menu and I can honestly recommend it all, but the tacos are solid.
google avatar

Marcos N.

Yelp
The service was excellent to place was Clean but the taste of the tacos really ain't it. Not sure why they haven't mastered their sazón I tried them in SY like 9yrs ago and they were dry and cold tacos. I still think they are super dry no sazón whatsoever but today they were fresh and (warm) hot I tried to give them one more chance but it's going to be a 3 for me and won't ever come back.

Monique M.

Yelp
This spot for tacos is so convenient and it never disappoints. I love their tortillas and the salsas are good.
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
I was not impressed by their birria tacos at all. The tacos were so greasy I felt disgusted eating them. The meat didn't even have that slow cooked flavor but rather straight up fried.. gross I might as well eat McDonalds... The table we sat at was dirty. The girl who took our order almost got it completely wrong. One lady came to our table but still didn't think to wipe our dirty table. No thanks. I won't be coming back.
google avatar

Dustin P.

Yelp
This was my go to spot. It's no longer worth the price tag. Carne asada and pastor from a warmer is disappointing after getting to watch them make it fresh before. Fries were undercooked. Al pastor was cold. Carne asada was old. The cheese is low quality and refuses to melt. El Pollo Grill in the same parking lot is more consistent.
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
We went to the Otay Ranch location and the food was amazing. Service was quick and everything was clean and organized. Highly recommend!

Ernie P.

Yelp
If you want authentic TJ style street tacos, this is the spot!! Had the Carne Asada, Birria, Adobada tacos and they were fire . Also had their Revo Fries with Carne Asada and Pollo. Delish. Owner was super nice and attentive as well,

Gary O.

Yelp
We came with my son on Sunday afternoon. It was realy hot inside. Order burrito carne asada and California It was very salty we can not even eat it. I tell this to manager and he only sad sorry. That's it.

Marie C.

Yelp
Today was a good day. Meat was fully loaded than usual. Also noticed there's a new menu with more items.
google avatar

Justin W.

Yelp
Small place with good music playing. Food was fresh, hot and came out quick. SO good. I had two asada tacos and one birria taco and a soda for $16. I could have ate five tacos easy.

Berts M.

Yelp
The two ladies that were working today had great customer service! Exceptional! Very nice. They provided such a great experience for my first time here. Ordered the revo fries and 4 tacos. It was quality! So good
google avatar

Romeo B.

Yelp
Delicious tacos order online and my order was ready for pick up on scheduled. If you want the best adobada tacos I highly recommend I got full with 3 and a perfect match horchata drink

Burrito F.

Yelp
This was my first time going to this restaurant and I have to say it was an enjoyable experience. I ordered their revo burrito with everything and it was very delicious. Everything from their meat to their guacamole was good. What stood out to me that made this burrito somewhat special was the queso seco they added to it. I've never had a burrito that had this ingredient in it so it was a new and tasty experience. I will definitely come back for more in the future.
google avatar

Jenna V.

Yelp
Wow. So glad I tried this spot. I had the steak mulitas and a carnitas burrito. The steak mulitas was spectacular. Very flavorful. I will say I actually ordered the steak quesa taco, so there was an error on that. The carnitas burrito was tasty, but the meat was quite greasy. The grease soaked through the tortilla a lot. The mild salsa is amazing. I didn't try the medium or hot, but they looked great. There are also peppers, onions, and limes in the salsa bar. I will definitely go back and try some other items. I did my order online for to go and it was ready on time.
google avatar

Brook D.

Yelp
Loved the taco's! Freshly made tortillas right there in front of you. Will definitely stop by again when I'm in the area
google avatar

katherine s.

Yelp
Lousy, long service. The place wasn't even packed and we waited close to 20 minutes for street tacos. Not worth it. It was really bad.
google avatar

Dona S.

Yelp
This spot is a great go to if you're ever conflicted on which place is gonna be good, they won't fail you lol. I got the protein style pollo asado and that was soooooo bomb ‍ I'll be back for that fashooo I also have nothing bad to say about the carne asada and carnitas tacos. I will say the mild salsa didn't have too much flavor and the other salsa options are pretty dang hot and I like spicy haha
google avatar

Maribel R.

Yelp
We used to be fans of their tacos and birria, however, after our visit yesterday we are no longer fans. Carne asada tacos had the consistency of more like birria but without the taste. Taste was meh, and the cilantro and onions did not taste fresh. I also ordered a consomé de birria, but it was missing flavor and the cilantro in it looked either cooked or wilted.
google avatar

Nancy M.

Yelp
Excellent place to take the family for tacos :) we ordered mulitas de birria, al pastor and pollo asado tacos..everything was excellent!

Brandon G.

Yelp
Friendly staff, and delicious adobada . You won't be disappointed, only full and wanting more.
google avatar

Angela M.

Yelp
One of the best birria tacos in San Diego! I had the Sonora style taco with birria and consume and they were fantastic! The tortilla was crispy and the cheese was melted to perfect. Their consume was one of the best ones I've had. Not too fatty, not too salty, and just the right balance of savory and spice. The price is on the higher side ($6.75 for one Sonora style taco), but they were generous with the meat. For regular tacos (with handmade flour tortillas), it's $3.85 per taco. I saw the staff making burritos and holy, they pack at least 1 lb of meat in each burrito where it looks like a big baby. While the price is on the steeper side, the food quality is great and their service is amazing. There is free parking in the lot but it can get filled up during the weekends. I also appreciate how meticulously clean their bathrooms were!
google avatar

Mallorie N.

Yelp
The adobada revo burrito is a solid California burrito, meat has great flavor, pretty good size, and they grilled the outside! Price felt a little high to me and I didn't love any of the salsa bar salsas. Not the #1 best burrito spot, but if you're in the Bonita Plaza neighborhood it's a good choice!

NeoLos ..

Yelp
Food was excellent had birria tacos meat was juicey and tender was delicious recommend it probably top 10 tacos kinda expensive 1 taco 3$ but worth it pretty authentic food service was fast n easy was kinda busy but when we got the food it was still fresh n hot hot ambiance was nice just ol relaxing spot was kinda hot in there but wasn't terrible recommend it

Yelp
BEST TACOS IN SAN DIEGO!!!! or at least best i've had yet. I ordered a carne asada taco, birria taco, consume, and side of rice to share with my boyfriend, who got a pollo asado taco and carne asada taco. The carne asada taco was a 5/5. YOU HAVE TO GET IT IF YOU COME HERE!! The meat had a smoky taste to it and was so perfectly seasoned. It wasn't too greasy, and it was not dry at all. It also had the most amazing guac on it omfg my mouth is watering just thinking about it. I scarfed that bad boy so fast. The birria taco was also really good. I put some consume on it. The meat was very tender and it wasn't too overly greasy. I would give it a 4/5. Because my 2 tacos were so good, I went back and ordered another carne asada taco & adobada taco lol. I personally would pass on the adobada, but my boyfriend loved it. It was a bit spicy and had a smoky flavor to it as well. The service was also amazing. Shoutout to the staff here, y'all were so sweet! When I dropped my consume, they gave me another one and told me not to worry about the mess. Y'all will definitely be seeing me back again!

Meg C.

Yelp
The food is great here, esp the carne asada. Love the Queso Tacos. BUT make sure they heard your order correctly! I ordered Carne Asada Queso Tacos and they gave regular CA tacos with a big spoonful of beans on top! WTH??

Natalia M.

Yelp
The carne asada tacos were extremely salty. I'm not sure if it's intentional to mask the flavor of the meat or to preserve it, but unfortunately, they didn't taste good. If you visit, I would recommend ordering something other than the carne asada. The salt overpowers the taste, to the point where you could be eating anchovies and not notice the difference.
