"There are lots of questionable decisions one could make late at night, but grabbing tacos at Atotonilco is not one of them. The cash-only, counter-service taqueria is open relatively late: 10pm during the week and 3am or 4am on weekends. You can get their very tasty tacos (the al pastor is juicy and crispy at the edges) to-go or for dine-in while your friends who got into an argument at Twisted Cantina wait outside." - veda kilaru

"A lot of late-night decisions are questionable, but deciding to grab tacos at Atotonilco isn't one of them. It's a cash-only counter-service taqueria that’s open relatively late: 10pm during the week and 2am or 3am on the weekend. Most tacos here are good—the spicy and tender al pastor is well seasoned and crispy, and the carne asada and Atotonilco specialty (steak topped with crema, tomato, and onion slices) are so flavorful you don’t need salsa. That said, the salsa is great, and provides a refreshing contrast against all the meat. You can get your tacos to-go, or sit in a large, high-ceilinged dining room that’s perfect for groups." - Veda Kilaru

Google
So delicious. We got 4 tacos each they were that good. My favorite was the Al Pastor- super juicy meat and the corn tortillas were very fresh. Rice pudding was also a great way to end :) Best tacos I’ve had in Chicago so far!

Google
Its good. Its really good. Probably the best al pastor tacos. I'm carne asada and tripas guy, but when I come here, I get al pastor. I mean that red sauce with guajillo chili flakes with thick cut, it is so good. Everyone does their al pastor little different and I like this little spice in al pastor. But yes...it is expensive. Taco for these days are not cheap. Its pretty hefty. But you get chiles en vinagre with tacos, and remember, cash only!

Google
Came here to get some late night tacos after a night out and let me tell you… this place was great! We got the carne asada and barbacoa tacos… 10/10! (They also gave us an extra horchata which was delicious!) The flavor here is on point!

Google
Came here with my kids and really enjoyed. It is a CASH ONLY place, they do have an ATM inside. There is a small parking lot next door. We tried asada, barbacoa, and lengua all were great. The barbacoa was a tiny bit salty but the limón helped.

Google
We visited here the first time in 2019, we were just walking down the sidewalk looking for a place to grab a quick bite. When we came to Chicago this year, we made a point to travel to Pilsen to get this food again. Absolutely AMAZING food and at such a great price. 3 tacos split between my boyfriend and I was more than enough food, they are packed and so so good! We will always make a point to stop in here when we visit Chicago in the future.

Google
The tacos are very tasty. The beef has tons of flavor, even without their house salsa, and I could eat the El pastor everyday. The tacos are some of the best I have had in Pilsen, though pricier than most. The food comes out fast and the line moves quick.

Google
This place is so under rated. I once lived in Corpus Christi, TX and saw a box truck belonging to them so I decided to try it just because I saw that truck lol. I was blown away with tortas and tacos. Omg....the shakes! Everyone try this place it is so good and seems like ur eating healthy with the low grease options 🤣😂🙂

Google
Tacos were very authentic and have a unique spin. They give a solid portion of meat for a good price. Some of the best tacos I've ever had in Chicago!

Yelp
Really tasty food. My husband's work friend has been raving about this place so we picked up lunch there last Sunday. Most people were taking their food to go but there is some seating if that's your preference. Other yelpers recommended the al pastor tacos so we ordered those, carne asada tacos, chicken tacos, and a barbacoa torta. The carne asada tacos could have used some seasoning but everything else was delicious. We'll be back. No pictures this time, I was starving!

Yelp
It's so sad. We had a nice experience from server. The food tasted fine but the prices were very expensive. A family of 4 cost was $95 for Mexican lunch on a Saturday. They had no prices listed anywhere so we got the surprise at the end. The very worst part of it all was that we got sick immediately at the restaurant but didn't think anything of it but then it lingered afterwords and we started to loud it together. Me being the cost conscience person that I am saved the "leftovers" for my chihuahuas. Sadly one of them also got sick the next day and threw up in his kennel and then messed some more the other way on our carpet. Only because of the server did I give 2 stars :(

Yelp
It was my first time checking out the Pilsen area since moving to Chicago. My friends and I decided to grab some tacos at Taqueria Atotonilco and I'm so glad we did! The first thing to note is that it's a cash-only spot, but they conveniently have an ATM inside, so it wasn't an issue. The interior is spacious, with plenty of seating, including booths and tables, and even public bathrooms. It's a great place to sit down and enjoy your meal if you're not taking it to go. The menu offers a wide variety of tacos, all reasonably priced at around $4 each. I went with three tacos: the Al Pastor (which a friend recommended as their specialty), the beef taco, and the chorizo taco. While all of them were delicious and had that authentic Mexican flavor, the beef taco was my favorite. The quality and taste really stood out and came with cheese which I really liked. Service was excellent! Our food came out in under five minutes, and our server was super attentive, bringing us extra hot sauce and a large bottle of salsa verde. They even brought our sodas directly to the table, which was a nice touch. Overall, I had an amazing experience at Taqueria Atotonilco. It's the perfect spot for some quick, delicious tacos, and I'll definitely be coming back whenever I'm in Pilsen! Highly recommend for authentic, flavorful tacos at a great price.

Jessica W.

Yelp
Spectacular gimme 14 of them! This place is a classic and old school taco spot and they do it right. No frills, cash only. The Al pastor tacos and the tacos Atotonilco are both delish. If you're feeling saucy get a banana shake with it!

Josie N.

Yelp
I was excited to eat tacos, ordene un taco de lengua y un taco de asada. Once my food was served, I added the pickled carrots and salsa to my taco. As I brought the taco closer to my mouth for a bite, a bizarre smell hit my nose but I bit it anyway. I immediately gagged and rushed to the restroom. The pickled carrots were spoiled as was my experience. I explained to the server the carrots were spoiled and she responded with ,"we cut them fresh this morning." I'm not one to leave a bad review; however, the lack of acknowledgment from the restaurant manager was disappointing. A simple apology would've sufficed but I didn't receive one. I unfortunately do not recommend the spot.

Michiel D.

Yelp
Cash only, delicious and authentic. The tacos are priced on the higher end but come with an overload of meats inside - especially the al pastor (biggest winner of them all). The steak taco is a bit dry, but topped off with the salsa tasty as well. The service is quite transactional but definitely fast. If you're into tortas, the al pastor and milanese are great too.

Jorge P.

Yelp
Cash Only! Man oh man, some of thee best tacos I've had in Chicago. I haven't stop thinking about them since having them. We ordered 3 tacos with rice & beans and a Birria Torta. There was not one bad thing that we ate that experience. The tacos are almost $5 each so that was something new to me... but i could see why they charge that much. Not the biggest fan of paying that much for a taco but it was my first time & I wanted the experience. Good service & quick & easy. We are already planning our next time to be back. Since I've gone a week ago, I've already told 5+ people about this place. If you've never been, I highly recommend. Even if you have to travel out of your way for this place. Thank you Atotonilco, we will be back soon! Personal Review: 8.9/10

Marci A.

Yelp
Cash only establishment but so worth it, the tacos were fresh and delicious, the service was quick and nice and we were able to sit down and eat in a good ambiance. The only thing I didn't like was that they charged $2+ for a tiny bit of crema and tbh I think they only did that to us bc we were tourists. Either way, the food was delicious so def recommend!

Claudia M.

Yelp
Let me start by letting you know this food was great! Atotonilco has several locations but I don't love all the food at certain locations. The food was so good that my 6 year old grandson asked for more! This location has great cooks. I couldn't give star because it's cash only - they do have a n ATM but it was an inconvenience. Service was good - food came out in pretty good time. This location does have parking too.

David M.

Yelp
First time here. I'm trying a lot of taco spots in Pilsen. This time it's Taquerias Atoonilco. I tried the Al Pastor taco and the Carne Asada Taco. They don't offer beans and rice I don't think. But I will ask next time. The tacos imo were just ok. They were solid tacos. The steak decently cooked and the al pastor as well. I heard that this place was really good so maybe my expectations were built. I will go again and provide and update. They are CASH ONLY. They have an Atonilico house special taco which I think comes with some type of tzatziki. I will update.

Jesus M.

Yelp
The place is very good as is the food but the person who served us is disgusting!! She complained to us for not taking her number when she never gave it to us, and the facial expressions she made were not appropriate. In conclusion, if you don't even like your job, quit. Don't ruin other people's dinner... what a disgusting atmosphere.

Edward P.

Yelp
if u want authentic, hot and ready mexican food this is a great option. they are open late and the staff is excellent. it's a quick service restaurant too.

Carol L.

Yelp
Great dine-in location for tacos as there are a lot of seats. I've been here twice and it's always consistently good. The tacos come with lettuce and tomato and my friend and I really liked their salsa. There was one taco we got that came with sour cream and onions which was also really good. I'd say you definitely need to order at least 4-5 tacos depending on how hungry you are. FYI CASH ONLY!

Angelina I.

Yelp
Been eating here for years. They have 3 locations on the southside and are cash only. This location stays open late on weekends. The tacos, tortas, and milkshakes are delicious. I recommend the tacos atotonilco.

Hira M.

Yelp
Everything about this place is awesome. Brought my son here, and man, did they live up to how amazing Pilsen tacos are! Our tacos were huge, delicious, and well priced. The staff here is great too. So kind in replacing our carne asada tacos from lettuce and tomato to cilantro and onion. We didn't specify when ordering either. I would have accepted just taking some cilantro and onion on the side to add on, but the gentleman not only made me new tacos, let me keep the ones with lettuce...which I am now bringing home for my daughter. We will certainly be coming back again.

Pilar B.

Yelp
I watched the episode of "Leguizamo Does America" and while this wasn't the same location I was interested in this business so had it on my mind during my visit to Chicago. I went to visit the Pilsen murals and saw the huge sign and the parking lot so took it as a sign to try it. I had the Al Pastor torta and it was very tasty with a little spicy kick and had me full for most of the day. The avocado was fresh and the bread was soft and tasty. Heads up it is cash only but there is an ATM available if you're like me that never has cash handy.

Angel P.

Yelp
I used to love this place but for some reason when I ate there last week, their tacos were not as good as they used to be. If I remember correctly it was default for their tacos to have only onions and cilantro on it; I never had to ask for it that way. I didn't ask this time and they put lettuce and tomato in them. The horchata also tasted too sugary and not cohesive enough because I can taste the sugar grains in the drink. The meat, however, tasted delicious; I'm glad this was one thing that worked for me. Since this restaurant used to be my favorite place to get tacos, I'll give them another chance and this time I'll ask for onions and cilantro.

Kris S.

Yelp
I was very excited to try this taqueria, and it did not disappoint. The experience felt very authentic, and I loved the decor of this place, including the tiles on the tables and bathroom. I had the famous torta de milanesa and while it was pretty good, it's not the best I've had. My wife had a torta al pastor, and it was very flavorful.

Jordan D.

Yelp
Open late on weekends, 3:30 am, however you're better off going to McDonalds across the street. They only serve tacos and tortas, no side and neither is worth it. Any time a street taco is more than $3 you know it's bs. It's bearable but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Jules A.

Yelp
This is a pass for me. The mixed reviews threw me off but I gave it a shot. I ordered: 1. Al pastor taco (1) - 2/5 rating - I do enjoy marinated meat but this was a bit much for me, just tasted like straight bbq sauce. It didn't taste as good as it looked unfortunately. 2. Lengua taco (1) - 3/5 rating - This was just "ok." No flavor really until I put hot sauce in it. 3. Soda (1) 4. Jamaica juice (1) Paid a total of about $24 which is a bit overpriced if I'm being honest. Cash only but they do have an ATM with a $2.50 fee. Plenty of seating inside and only took a few minutes to get the food. I should stick to my instincts of small taco spots are always better. Hope you have a better experience if you decide to go!

Jorge C.

Yelp
Really bad service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was waiting for more than 30 minutes for my tacos! They never bring it!

Devonte G.

Yelp
Super good meats ! People are nice and the environment feels very old school Chicago vibe . Cash only which can sometimes be inconvenient

Jose C.

Yelp
Hands down Atotonilco has the best Al Pastor tacos, not only in the city, but in the world. The al pastor is sliced off the spit and then put on the flat top to be cooked with their spicy red sauce. Then it's jam packed on a warm, big yellow tortilla. They then put green salsa on the the table for some extra heat. The meat is so tender and perfectly cooked. Warning.. these are so addicting to eat so watch your carbs if you can. The dining area is very spacious and unlike any other Atotonilco location I've been to, this is the best service I've ever received. Their entire staff was very welcoming, including their cook. Everyone greeted us with a "Buenos Dias." Can't wait to come back. Not a complaint, but rather some thankfulness, they still only accept cash, which is a good thing since I don't have a free for all and order too much.

Diana M.

Yelp
These tacos are some of the worst I've ever had. We got our tacos to go and it was weird that you couldn't smell them. When I opened them up I was surprised at how big they were but then I tasted them and was so upset. They had no flavor! The salsa didn't even help. Horrible.

Sabrina M.

Yelp
Absolutely great food Fresh waters highly recommend: horchata dine-in seating & take-out La comida esta buenisima aguas frescas, les recomiendo la horchata

Ingrid Y.

Yelp
Cash only which is annoying, but the food is great and cheap, and the service is fast. They mostly serve tacos and tortas. Tacos are four bucks a pop and come in the standard options (e.g. carne asada, al pastor, barbacoa). I got those three and enjoyed them a lot. I also got an horchata, which came in handy when i put a little too much salsa on the al pastor taco. Great late night bite!

Maria H.

Yelp
If I'm in the neighborhood, this is my go-to taqueria. I wish they had some locations up North since I have yet to try anything as good as these in the Northside. Their asada is so flavorful and made to order. When you walk in, you can see the cooks cooking and cutting up the meat. My usual is an asada taco but their chicken and chorizo are also very flavorful. They have a variety to choose from along with the best tortas and horchata. They added rice pudding to their menu which is a nice treat. They only take cash so be prepared to bring some. You may complain about their $4 tacos but trust me, they are so worth it.

Benito G.

Yelp
Los mejores tacos en Chicago, gracias paisanos por su trabajo y dedicación a la mejor gastronomía en el mundo: La Comida Mexicana.

Michelle G.

Yelp
My friend's been living in Pilsen for a little now, and she mentioned that this is one of her favorite taco spots in the neighborhood. I wasn't too hungry, so I only got the house special taco (I'm not sure if they call it that or she called it that because it's called the Atotonilco) / Atotonilco. It's a steak taco served with sour cream and tomato. Their menu is bilingual, which is dope, and is easily visible on the wall which is both economical and environmentally friendly. This taco was good, and I definitely would want to try the other ones, especially the goat. My friend also recommended the strawberry juice, and it was amazing. A five star juice - it tastes so fresh and exactly what you imagine fresh strawberry juice would taste like. I know that's a lazy definition, but it's just amazing and you should get it unless you hate strawberries.

Salena C.

Yelp
A Pilsen hidden gem that my cousin seriously didn't want to tell me about because she knew I would spread the word on yelp. This place is SO GOOD. As soon as you order, the food is out in two minutes flat. I was completely shocked. Tacos are all $3 and come packed with meat. They crisp up their tortillas (just like they do in Mexico), which is my absolute favorite. I'm seriously salivating just typing this. You can order them with lettuce and tomatoes, or obviously the better option, cebolla y aguacate. It is cash only with an ATM inside. 100% worth the stop.

Sabrina C.

Yelp
I want to move inside of the restaurant so that I can get their tacos on demand. I don't mind sleeping on the floor. Im almost positive that they won't allow it though. I first came here a few years ago. While driving down the street, my stomach rumbled and I looked to my left - there was McDonald's. I looked to my right - and there was this Mexican place with a name that seemed longer than most. I checked Yelp and said hey, what could possibly go wrong with tacos in Pilsen? Walked inside and ordered two chicken tacos....... and at that moment, this became one of my FAVORITE taco joints in the city. They keep the taco toppings simple and authentic, as they should be and EVERYTHING is seasoned WELL! No credit cards are accepted but there is an ATM in the front for those of us who still need to grab cash. There's tons of seating and even a few items (tortillas, sauces, etc) that you can purchase in the front.... right next to where you pay andddddd where THEY MAKE MILKSHAKES! I had a banana one. Cinnamon sprinkled on top. A piece of licuado heaven *swoon*. I wonder could I hide in the bathroom and stay there.

Jose S.

Yelp
Great food. Cash only, cashier gave back my change when I over paid. Shows me that they have integrity as well.

Jacqueline D.

Yelp
I ordered two tacos de asada and was disappointed. The meat had no flavor. We also ordered a torta de milanesa 6/10. The horchata was 10/10!!! It's cash only here. The service was fast but unfortunately will not be returning.

Raul M.

Yelp
This rating is solely based on this company's level of greed. $4/TACO (looking at $12 for 3 tacos... no drink)??? Seriously! Almost $9 for mediocre tortas?? I know times are rough and prices have gone up. But these are the times when tacos are supposed to shine bc they are affordable. You can find a way better torta else where and you can also go down a few blocks to El Milagro for their steak dinner ($7.75) which hasn't raised it's prices that drastically. For $25 you can get 1/2 kilo of steak at Caton with beans, nopales, grilled onions, grilled chiles and tortillas.

Lisa Y.

Yelp
Excellent tacos and fast service, it is pricey for tacos but the quality is there. The drinks are huge so beware when ordering

R E.

Yelp
This is the spot. Cash only unfortunately, but it's worth the inconvenience. Chicken, steak, and Al pastor tacos are all well seasoned and grilled to remain juicy. Need to specify onions and cilantro when ordering. Food comes out fast!

Nohemi Z.

Yelp
Nothing fancy about the inside of this place but that doesn't matter when they serve up the best damn Al Pastor tacos around! Had them about a week ago and I can't stop day dreaming about them!

Rhonda T.

Yelp
Been a fan for Years .... The only thing you need for a good taco is tender steak, delicate tortilla and delicious sauce ..... This place checks all boxes !

Alison P.

Yelp
My husband and I came in and shared some things including a delicious torta, three tacos, and a strawberry juice. Everything was really tasty. The waitstaff was very friendly and service was so speedy!! We ordered and then I went to the restroom... by the time I got back the food was basically there. Great place to grab a quick lunch!

Michelle T.

Yelp
I've frequented Antotonilco 26th Street since I was a wee babe so the Pilsen location wasn't on my radar. There is a long standing dispute that Pilsen Atoto is far better than that of 26th St. location. My verdict; Pilsen Atotonilco takes the crown! Skip the pastor, hell skip the carne asada, the real show stopper here is the 5 Star barbacoa taco. Don't get me wrong carne asada is still a dependably good 4 Star taco but, when a phenomenal barbacoa taco is hard to come by (even for a heavily Latino populated city like Chicago), go for the rare commodity! The barbacoa is fall off the bone, juicy, tender and finely shredded meat. Furthermore, this is probably the only taquiera that I can go to and not get mad that there are two tortillas holding the taco. So many places I go I find myself peeling off the bottom layer of tortilla because the ratio to filling is always off. Atoto Pilsen has a great ratio because the amount of filling is dependent on both tortillas. I hope that paints a vivid picture of how hefty these tacos are. The reason why I give Atotonilco an overall score of 4 Stars is that I can easily say I've had better pastor and better carne asada elsewhere. However, when it comes to gentrifying Pilsen with confusingly high restaurant prices and now home to a confusing Michelin star establishment, I hope one never over looks this taquiera for a cheap authentic Mexican meal at $3 a pop. Pro Tip: Don't forget to walk directly across the street to Don Churro for dessert!

Linda S.

Yelp
Fast, no-frills but friendly service, authentic, birria and lengua tacos were particularly good. The special steak taco tasted only ok but it's to be expected for steak taco. Soft corn taco shells were very thick and satisfying and had a slight crunch to them.

Damian P.

Yelp
Prices are too high $4 a taco, this is kind of disappointing as this franchise has raised their prices. But I guess it's part of the time but they are good. I had tacos de lengua and really enjoyed the tenderness of the taco and the seasonings. This is what it's all about, tender tacos and perfect seasoning, so I will come back even for $4 hits. It was Interesting to order some chips as they let you take the whole bag and it's enough for at least 4 adults. With some salsa and there, you cannot go wrong. Easily one of those hidden taquerias that you have to try as they are reminiscent of Mexico In the hidden neighborhoods, except they are a lot less lively as far as it being quiet, at least the night we came. Mexican taquierias are usually hustling and bustling with noise from people clanking and cheering to waitresses saying "que gusta". All on all you will not get waitress service here, as you order your food, pay (Cash only) and listen for your number to ve called. You can always use their ATM but I'd avoid it as it will cost you mote to use. Still, after hanging out this is the spot. Buen provecho!

Robin K.

Yelp
Came here just for the birria tacos with the sauce (don't leave without it) and it was exceptional. Cash only some come prepared. I'll definitely be back!

Leigh G.

Yelp
I tried this place as a recommendation from someone. I was torn between 3 stars and 4 stars but went with 4. I ordered two steak tacos and one chicken taco. The first steak I had was amazing and so was the chicken. Like, very, very good. Then for whatever reason, the second steak taco was not good. It tasted like there was a bunch of burnt pieces and hard pieces. Kinda gross. Also, sidenotes: the tacos come with just meat so any toppings are extra (it added up VERY quickly for me - adding cheese and avocado added $5 to my bill). Lastly, they do not have chips and salsa. They do bring you a bottle of salsa for your meal though. I personally only ate in for the chips and salsa so it was disappointing for me!

Johnny F.

Yelp
Quick, fresh, delicious, tacos that are on the more pricier side of things ($3 and cash only) but its definitely worth a try. The large menu and options are absolutely fantastic as it helps service a large variety of customers with different tastes and preferences. They do both authentic (onions and cilantro) and American (lettuce and cheese) style for your tacos if you prefer. There is an ATM but I would come here knowing that you should have cash so you don't get charged some ridiculous fee for trying to get tacos (which that fee would probably be the cost of 1 taco here).

Edwin C.

Yelp
Unreasonable price point on their tacos. At least $4 a taco?? Really?? It's not that amazing. There are plenty of places that serve just as good tacos if not better in the city for a cheaper price. Really overrated. It's not like the portions are that generous either.

Kyle D.

Yelp
Overall: Cheap, delicious, and fast. What more can you ask for? Best $5 spent in a long time. The good: Strolled in late on a Fri night and to my surprise, it was an amazing decision. Everything is super cheap and from the first bit of my torta, I was blown away. The carne asada was seasoned and cooked perfectly, and the blend of the salsa verde and toppings were amazing. I took mine to go, but it is a huge place with lots of seating. It was super quick and still hot and ready to eat. The not-so-good: Cash only. Atmosphere: 8/10 Service: 9/10 Food: 10/10

Pris G.

Yelp
The tacos did not come with Limón nor cilantro and cebolla (pastor). The agua de horchata was basically water with vanilla flavor. It didn't taste like horchata at all. Mexican woman disappointed over here!

Bread and W.

Yelp
Food is great! My favorite are the tortas and steak tacos! Everyone is nice! Keep in mind they only accept cash!
