Taquito Review - South Street Seaport - New York - The Infatuation

"We’re into tacos. You probably are too. But you shouldn’t get them here. The fish tacos at this counter-service taqueria on the second floor of the Tin Building food hall come with a tiny portion of fried flounder and way too much cabbage. It’s like having a spicy slaw taco drizzled with more aioli than you need. While the roasted chicken taco is nicely seasoned, the actual meat is overcooked and chopped into small charred and crispy pieces. You can hardly tell you’re eating chicken. Since you won’t be able to hit every place in the Tin Building in one visit anyway, this is one of the spots to skip." - Kenny Yang

I only had a snack here. Chips and salsa and a frozen margarita. 🍹 but I have to say it was delicious! These chips are not homemade as one would expect from Jean George but the salsa was great. The margarita was exceptional. The only downside is the seating area is tiny.

Tacos with high quality ingredients and presentation is essentially what you’re paying the steep price for. They’re not the best tacos, nor the largest serving. BUT, they are definitely balanced in flavor, not greasy/oily, and pretty damn satisfying. If only they weren’t too expensive, I’d go here more often.

Small restaurant within the Tin Building with 4 little tables. Tasty but expensive tacos. Prices on menu are per single taco. Fish taco was nice and crispy.

Simple yet flavourful. Located in the Tin Buildings at South Street seaport. A well edited menu provided options for meat lovers and vegetarians. I enjoyed the shrimp tacos with a hint of heat, guacamole and homemade chips. My original choice of quesadillas was not available, hope to try next time.

Had the fish tacos and they’re very tasty. The salsa that comes with the chips and salsa is very big, like 6oz worth.

Google
Amazing tacos, really tasty and full of flavor. The frozen margaritas were great as well. The price of the food is pretty expensive but it's to be expected being in the Tin Building by Jean-Georges. Also, just a heads up a few people ordered the quesadilla and those are premade so if you want to modify the order such as removing or adding ingredients you can't. As well as portion sizing is a bit small.

The tacos are filled with tasty and fresh ingredients. The service is fast and efficient, but they’re on the pricier side for the portion size.

Cute little taco spot down by The Seaport. Chicken tacos were really good and surprisingly topped with radishes. No bitter radish flavors though, the mix of spices and ingredients were artisanal and tasty!

Yelp
After a workout in Fidi, we were craving tacos on one of the first warm evenings of the year. We headed to the Tin Building and found plenty of options. Taquito is located on the 2nd floor in the back corner, near a gourmet grocery shop. We ordered a variety of tacos - battered fish, pork confit and shrimp. We also sprung for the guacamole and churros. The fish was by far my favorite? All 3 had very different flavors which we enjoyed. Pork confit came in second place. The churros are a MUST-ORDER if you love churros. The chef did an excellent take on them - crispy, warm inside and enveloped in a soft sugary coating and the raspberry chocolate sauce topped it off deliciously. We decided to take the order to go and ate al fresco while the sunset faded to blue.

Yelp
In a word: disappointing. I came here for a quick lunch and got two tacos (one chicken, one fish) along with some churros for dessert. I know everything in the Tin Building is going to be default expensive so I wasn't toooo surprised by the prices. But since this is the Tin Building and not an airport, I expected the quality to be much better than it was. If you're gonna charge $7-$8.50 for a single [tiny] taco, and effectively $4 per churro (each $8 churro order only includes two churros), they better at least be tasty! That part really threw me for a loop. I should also note that the "choice of two" text on the menu under tacos was fairly misleading at first; it led me to believe that the prices reflected what it would cost for two tacos, when in fact you were paying the listed price per taco. (It was more expressing a two taco minimum if I understood correctly.) I didn't like the tacos and especially didn't like the fish taco, which was tart and tasted weird. The chicken one was fine but not enjoyable per se. The churros and the accompanying chocolate sauce were both way too sweet -- to the extent that I didn't finish either. I'm not one to not be able to finish two measly churros, like come on! Dessert is usually my thing. Insult to injury was that I had to wait about 10-15 minutes just to get the churros, and they were decidedly NOT worth the wait. I'm a bit surprised by all the other positive reviews -- maybe they were just having an off day when I went? -- but needless to say I won't be trying this place again. I'll stick to other places in the Tin Building and to getting tacos on the West Coast.

Yelp
First time venturing the Tin building and was excited to try the different selections. Was excited to try this place but was disappointed. The Guac was ok, chips were hard. One fish taco had a thick bone in it , the mushroom & tomatoes tacos were falling apart , shell was soggy and didn't hold together. The flavors were good, just doesn't match the cost, spent $60 for small guacamole, 2 fish & 2 mushroom tacos & bottled water. Wasn't satisfied at all.

Yelp
Incredible tacos! Especially love the fish and shrimp tacos. Quick and friendly service. Churros are great too.

Yelp
Got the fish taco - amazed. the best fish taco I ever had in my life. The fish batter was crunchy flakey and light. Was not doughy at all. Was cooked to perfection. Only flaw I would input would be the amount of fish that's actually in there. Could be more for its price point. Another chicken taco was good flavors, but could come off salty. Overall amazing tacos but high price tag. Cashier was awesome - offered suggestions and good energy! Ambiance is nice and clean - hard to base off since its inside the Tin Building. 10/10 for the food and service!

Yelp
Friendly owner, Joe has a lot of good energy and they made excellent tacos worth the price, my picky sox-year-old ate two of them. I'll go back next time I'm in the village

Yelp
Just had the crispy gulf flounder tacos ($17) which were absolutely delicious! Definitely on the pricey side but flavors and texture were perfection in terms of elevated tacos. Interested to try the frozen margs and churros next. Located on the 2nd fl of the Tin Building!

Yelp
I have been to the Tin Building in South Street Seaport about 6 times just in the year 2023, and every single time I go, I take the escalator to the second floor and walk directly to Taquito! Their tacos are so memorable, in the best way possible. I always order the chicken tacos and a side of guac and chips. To start, this is definitely not your ordinary taco. The chunks of chicken are crispy, juicy and perfectly sized. The tomatillo salsa adds a flavorful taste to the already flavorful chicken and then theres a garnishing on top (which I have no idea what vegetable this is). The service is fast, consistent and friendly. I've met different people a few times, but they are all helpful each time. The service is also pretty fast, hence the term "Fast Casual Dining". You can grab a seat right in the immediate space in front of Taquito or beside the Global market or on barstools at the Beer Here bar. Also my boyfriend got the Crispy Gulf Flounder tacos and there's no way I could've taken a picture of them because he devoured them the second it came! He says it was an 9/10. Look forward to coming here again very soon!

Yelp
Food was nice, though a little pricey for what it was. Be careful when placing an order. They got our drinks and food order wrong and then seemed to argue with me about it. However, we persevered and the food was really nice. Atmosphere was nice. We were here on a quiet lunchtime. Due to the service mix up we wouldn't be back, especially when in an area with so many other options.

Yelp
SCAM!!! BEWARE OF MISLEADING PRICES AND CARELESS MANAGERS!! Rather leave 0 stars. The menu states "choice of two" under tacos and then each meat is labeled with a price. Completely misleading customers to believe that the price listed on the menu is per 2 tacos. When I got my bill after eating it was double what was listed on the menu. The cook (who claims to be the boss) told me only after eating that the words on the menu meant that it was mandatory that I order 2 tacos and that the prices directly under are only per 1 taco. That's either the dumbest way to run a business or someone is severely uneducated in the English language. You guys willingly took advantage of me and had 0 effort to fix this or give any inch of customer service. I was told because I ate the tacos I was not able to be helped. If I was made aware prior to ordering that the menu was completely incorrect in what it states, than I would've never even ordered. The whole reason we ordered was because it looked like a good deal for 2 tacos. You got a blonde haired dude making tacos. It clearly wasn't going to be worth $8 for a single unauthentic taco. I would've been somewhat ok with the mistake and took it on as my own problem however this "boss" made me wait 10 minutes to even address this issue. Made me completely ruin my plans because I missed my train while waiting for my issue to be acknowledged. And when I asked again to do something to make it right they said they didn't care because I ate the taco and I should just make a yelp review as my only way of "making it right". Close your business if you do not care about your customers. I will make sure to spread the word to everyone to never give a penny to this scam of a business. I really didn't want to result to leaving a piss poor review as a fellow business owner, however your employees lack of care represent an obvious lack or respect and integrity from the owners. Hope you can use that $8 to get you out of bankruptcy frauds.

Yelp
Had pork tacos as a snack after finishing a meal downstairs at the Tin Building by Jean Georges. The pork was PERFECTLY charred, tender and full of flavor. I highly recommend getting the habañero salsa on the side, it is spicier than most salsas (probably a 5 on 1-5 scale). Nothing beats the ambience of dining in the Tin Building. Nice dimmed lighting. There are only four spots to sit though, so if it is during peak time it might make more sense to walk outside onto the waterside and eat.

Yelp
The churros are good, and I really like the mushroom tacos. And when I got mushrooms in my burrito bowl. The chicken taco was a bit spicy for me. I wish I can ask for no spicy things when I get delivery, but there isn't the option to request adjustments or changes via door dash.

Lucy P.

Yelp
Tacos are expensive and they just don't taste fresh or well handled. Drinks are really strong.

Yelp
It's not HORRIBLE... but it's also not good. If you have ever lived anywhere with a significant LatinX population: this place is an insult to Mexican cuisine. Fair enough.. Jean-George is French, not Mexican. He tried to jazz it up but honestly- Mexican didn't need that. Pistachios in the guacamole? Uh.. okay. I mean they're fine, love pistachios actually- but they really don't belong in guac. The chips were not warmed. And heavily, heavily salty. The guac didn't even taste like guac, really... I get it, avocados aren't native to NY... but this isn't Mexican. Also the prides are insane for street food. $15 for chips +guac, WHICH DOES NOT INCLUDE SALSA. That's another $10. Are they serious...? Oh. They are. And service is very unfriendly.

Yelp
Three weeks ago we ate at Taquito after walking around Tin Building for the first time. The tacos had great reviews on Yelp and they sounded the most appealing for the price. It did not disappoint. These were some of the tastiest and properly cooked tacos we've ever eaten! The batter on the fish was lightly coated and fried perfectly so that the fish was still moist inside. The spices on the chicken made it more flavorful than you would expect for roasted chicken. Both tacos had nice sauces and garnishes to make it a complete bite. Although the price is higher than for most tacos, it was worth treating ourselves to some good food on vacation in NYC. Our compliments to the chef!
