The 38 Best Restaurants in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

"Open for: Breakfast, lunch, dinnerPrice range: $$Inside a former fast-food joint across from Subaru City on the south side, this hideaway of Jordanian and Palestinian delights is surprisingly homey with its elaborate rugs and ornate lamps. A stone oven acts as the restaurant’s fiery beating heart, turning out enough taboon bread, thoughtful manakish (flatbreads), and spiced beef- or sumac-spinach-stuffed fatayer (pastries) to qualify Taqwa’s as a bakery. Comforting standbys like Turkish coffee, hummus, baba ghanoush, breakfasts of eggs or fried Mediterranean cheeses, and kebabs have made this an everyday go-to spot only a few years after opening.   Vibe check: On a cold night, you can sit near the fiery oven and hold your manakish close." - Todd Lazarski

Everybody had a different favorite item. Outside strip mall vibe didn’t match the interior beauty. Divya was pleasant and helpful and shared a bit about the family-owned restaurant when I asked. The food was very aromatic, especially the next day when we enjoyed leftovers. The baklava dessert was fresh, and the honey on it seemed distinct. Overall not my typical cuisine but very good all around. I loved the water jug, receipt box, and other functional pieces of art throughout.

Google
We order a few different plates to share and try amongst our table. 10/10 for the foods. The dessert were a bit less impressive but overall it was a nice experience- the venue was clean, beautifully decorated and the serve was excellent.

Google
We loved the beautiful, flavorful food! The dessert was delicious and not overly sweet. The turkish coffee and liban ayran (salted milk) were tasty, as well. It was a wonderful experience in a Palestinian & Jordanian restaurant.

Google
All of the food is delicious (you can tell it was made with love). The lentil soup is the best I’ve ever had. Service is friendly. The interior is decorated like an elegant Bedouin tent. I’ll be back for sure! Thanks!

Google
Highly recommend! Sad I didn’t come to this place sooner. It’s been on our list. You can taste each individual ingredient in the dishes. The food is amazing, we ordered things that were recommended to us and none of it disappointed. The ambiance is really inviting and a nice vibe. Very cool decorations and music, too. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and our server, Kenza, was so nice and she explained things on the menu to us since it was our first time eating here. We will definitely return.

Google
impeccable!! had the most lovely dining experience here this weekend with some friends. our waitress kenza was extremely kind and gave us spectacular service!! the food was 10/10 and i can honestly say that was one of the best meals of my life. i will be dreaming of that hummus tonight.

Google
We were going to the airport and decided on this restaurant. What an amazing place! The atmosphere is relaxing and comfortable, and the food…the food was so delicious AND plentiful. We all ended up taking nearly ANOTHER meal home…this will be our go-to place whenever we’re in Milwaukee! The staff was gracious and service was impeccable, so it gets the full 5 stars 🌟

Google
Wow. This place has AMAZING food. My partner is from Morocco and gave his stamp of approval. We ordered probably way too much food for our group of six but we have no regrets. I'm sitting here eating leftovers and looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
The food here is amazing. I've been here several times. Seems like a family owned business that cares about the details. I recently retuned for a take out order as they were busily preparing for Ramadan meal. They took my order and as I was waiting brought me some mint tea. I can't recommend them enough.
google avatar

Matthew W.

Yelp
Awesome service and even better food. We had eyes bigger than our stomachs and the server was kind enough to remind us to hold off on certain items as we would have too much food. I would highly recommend the Manakish, Kufta Kebobs, Dawalee, and Baba Ghannouj.
google avatar

Ali M.

Yelp
Absolutely 0 complaints. From the service, to the food. It took about 20 minutes since the moment I ordered, but it was worth the wait. الحمدلله . Beautiful decor btw.

Yelp
Stopped in here for dinner on a Thursday night. The place was nearly empty which was sad to see because the food was SO good!! Started out with the falafel - so delicious. Got the mixed grill platter with cucumber salad. The meat was very tender, the rice was tasty, and the cucumber salad was so refreshing! And don't get me started in the fresh bread. Wanted the pistachio baklava but they were out so I tried the walnut and it was amazing. I still want to try the pistachio one! Overall a great experience. The server was very sweet. Also the decor is lovely! Will be coming back and hopefully others do so we don't lose this great option for middle eastern cuisine!

Yelp
So good! Had the Sunday lunch buffet. Lots of choices, including many vegetarian options. Delicious! Service was great. Cozy decor, very comfortable. There were so many desserts to sample. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Someone called this a Palestinian restaurant but I'm guessing from the pictures of Petra and the Jordanian flags that it's Jordanian. But like any restaurant serving the regional cuisine, one is met by that exuberant Arab hospitality from welcome to Ma'ssalaame. The mint tea tastes like Moroccan but is poured from a Jordanian tea pot. Most of the dishes are close cousins to what I know from elsewhere in the Middle East but some have different names, some are uniquely Jordanian. Portions are generous, the food is very tasty. Since I've only eaten in four Jordanian restaurants ever, I can't attest to how authentic it is, but this one is better than the other three. This is the only one I know of in Wisconsin (of course the other three were in Michigan). The décor is more upscale than more typical Middle Eastern restaurants, up until early afternoon there's a nice selection of baked goods. You need to have some self control if you're diabetic, the desserts are sweet. Very sweet. They serve breakfast with some of the best coffee in Southeast Wisconsin. You will not be disappointed unless you're the sort of person who is always disappointed in which case this will be yet another in your long chain of disappointments.

Yelp
This place was amazing. I have never had Jordanian food before, so this was a first. It was so so so so good and our waiter walked us through the whole menu with his recommendations. This is my new favorite restaurant . The decor on the inside was also beautiful.

Bruce K.

Yelp
Went to Taqwa's on a Monday night...almost didn't go in because we were only customers at the restaurant. After convincing my wife to go in, we were pleasantly surprised. The decor is nice inside and much different than the reclaimed exterior. We shared fatayer and arayes as appetizers. The spinach and Mediterranean cheese fatayers were good. The arayes were a bit oily. The mixed grill was really good. Large serving of rice with some grilled vegetables with a beef shish kabob, chicken shish tawook, and kufta kabob with a salad side - we chose the yogurt cucumber salad. Meat quality was excellent. Plenty of other items on the menu that we want to try. And they bring your check in a box!

Yelp
Had dinner with a friend and loved the food, decor of the restaurant, and helpful staff. We were the only guests dining on a Wednesday night, but there were carry-out orders coming in while we visited. We shared the falafel, hummus, Taboun bread, Mosakhan which is taboun topped with caramelized onions, olive oil, and chicken quarters (or one half chicken), the Mixed Grill with Shish Kabob, Chicken Shish Tawook, and Kufta Kabob, as well as a side salad. We really enjoyed all of the food! They suggested dipping the falafel into the hummus, which was a goid call, and the mixed grill and taboun were other favorites! Give them a try for an authentic experience if you haven't yet.

Gabrielle P.

Yelp
This was my first time trying this restaurant and I absolutely loved it! Our waiter was so kind and helpful and recommended some incredible dishes for us to try. All of the food was delicious and I will definitely be coming back again and again!

Kori W.

Yelp
The food was good flavor wise, and the atmosphere was very nice and expensive feeling. I will say that the food was a bit oily, but it just may be that I'm not familiar with Jordan based food. It was good nonetheless I would say that for the price you didn't get that much food and the chicken I got was juicy but so so juicy that it was almost soggy. I don't know how to explain it. The service was OK. She didn't really bother us that much which I kind of appreciated, but they didn't have almost any of the desserts listed on their menu in stock.
google avatar

Paul W.

Yelp
This place is amazing. This is the second time we've been here and had excellent food. We started with crunchy delicious falafel. Then we both had the Mixed Grill Kabobs with steak, ground beef, and chicken. I had a Mediterranean salad and my wife had the cucumber salad. All of it was delicious with some mint tea. We also ordered some fresh bread that was awesome. We finished with a cheese dessert wrapped in phyllo dough. It was warm and delightful and melted in my mouth. We will be back for the excellent service, fun music, and all the flavors. And it's very affordable.

Yelp
This place is super legit. Absolutely the most delicious versions of middle eastern food, including the best hummus I've ever had, amazing falafel, unbelievable beef kebabs and lamb chops... everything is top notch, and the service is great. Been here at least 8 times, and my only wish is for more people to be aware of it! Seriously, I know it's a little off the beaten path as far as restaurants go, and I know there's not a massive demand for middle eastern food in Milwaukee, but please give this place a chance. They're wonderful people, and it's hurts my heart to see empty tables at such a stellar restaurant. They've now introduced Ladies Night on Tuesdays and Kids Night on Wednesdays to try to get more people in the door. Be one of those people, you won't regret it!!!

Yelp
Friendly and quiet atmosphere! Fresh breads daily that are to die for! Such great flavor and amazing food you won't be disappointed the fresh beef pies are my favorite and if u don't get in early they usually run out they are that delicious

Neva C.

Yelp
We were traveling from Michigan to Milwaukee and we stopped by here. It was very close to our hotel and the food was pretty good. Atmosphere also nice and welcoming. Service was fast!

Yelp
If you are looking for a a good Palestinian restaurant, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Taqwa's. I have been here a handful of times in the last month just because of their exquisite service and flavorful food. First off, GET THE KIBBEH! It's soooo good. I crave it at least once a week. Some of the kibbehs I have had at other places can be extremely dry and bland but Taqwas kibbehs are perfectly seasoned and not dry or oily at all!!! Also... the mix grill platter... the meats are seasoned so well, very tender and not dry. The service was unmatched! My cousin and I were catching up and stayed there unintentionally for over two hours. The owner came out and gave us free baklava! He was sooooooo kind and even told us to take our time chatting. Talk about a five star customer service! I am leaving soon and to think I have to find another place as good as taqwas is kinda making me stressed out. Guys, I'm telling you. GO HERE! It's the best one in Mke!

Cassandra M.

Yelp
My new favorite restaurant in Milwaukee! Amazing food and the nicest service. The ambiance is also so fun! Will definitely be coming back.

Christine C.

Yelp
The reviews did not lie... this place is so good! Been wanting to come here for a while now & so mad i didnt come sooner! The service is so nice & accommodating. The whipped garlic is to die for & the bread so fresh! Everything is fresh & good but my partner recommends the ground beef kabob & their homemade 'hot sauce'. The space is nice & not over bearing with decorations.

Yelp
Get the Family Meal if you have 8+ people. You get a full meal plus a carry out leftover box for each person. No way you could eat more.

Heyokah S.

Yelp
The quality of the tabouli was very bad. There was no olive oil. It was not well done

Yelp
Went to Taqwas tonight with a few friends who had been there before. The food was delicious and everyone who worked there was so welcoming. I liked the atmosphere inside, it was cozy and casual. We ordered the baba ganouj, foul madammas, tahini salad, hummus, falafel and our friends ordered two meat dishes including mosakhan. I wish they would make a vegetarian version of that meal because I tried of her bread with the caramelized onions on it and yowza! So good. Everyone agreed the food is absolutely delicious. The baba ganouj was some of the best I'd ever had. I loved the texture and flavor of the foul, I'd eat that for breakfast or any meal of the day. There were tons of leftovers so we ordered more bread to take home,They. Made. It. Fresh. We will be back. If you haven't been, do yourself a favor and go! It was a Saturday night and maybe 4 tables were full. I hope more people will discover this great little restaurant in a weird spot. I want this restaurant to be successful for many years so we can keep eating there. Worth the drive I promise you.

Yelp
Enjoyed our meal here. Wasn't busy at all the day we had lunch. Friendly staff. Lentil soup was especially delicious.

Yelp
First time eating at this delicious restaurant. The food was absolutely amazing! The service was fast, friendly, and quick. The ambience was definitely Middle Eastern which we loved. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Phenomenal!!! So glad to finally try this place. The restaurant is beautiful inside. The staff was so pleasant. Our server Razan (aka) Roza was amazing!!! She was super friendly and knowledgeable about all the delicious food. We wanted to try it all but decided to try a handful of options. We started with hummus, baba ghanoush, lentil soup, tabbouleh, pita, kibbeh, fatayer (ground beef, cheese, spinach). For our entree we shared the mix grill. Everything was so delicious and tasty. We also tried 3 different desserts. The date cookies, pistachio baklava and hareeish. We will definitely be back!!!

Yelp
This has been a bookmark ever since they opened so since I was craving Middle Easter/Mediterranean food I thought that I would stop by. The place is nice with a hookah room, bar, booths and tables. The menu has some interesting items but the Kufta kabob was my choice. When my plate hit the table I was surprised at how small the Kufta kabobs were for $14.99 and probably the smallest I have ever had. So I'm thinking that I just ordered and I just spent $15 for a side salad, rice and a small amount of ground meat. look at the kabobs next to a fork, it's slightly fatter and longer than a breakfast sausage link. I wish I would have known that I would get so little meat because they have a 1/2 grilled chicken for $12.99 or 2 chicken pin wheels on Taboun bread for $12.99 that would have satisfied my meat crave today because I was looking for some meat to sink my teeth into. I completely feel that the menu is unbalanced and that I got ripped off for $15 for mostly rice and veggies and very little meat when I could have had a satisfying grilled 1/2 chicken for around the same price. The Kufta kabob at a $14.99 price point is very overpriced for what you get and not worth it. I don't mind paying for my meal but I do mind over paying especially when it's the south side and not downtown Milwaukee.

Yelp
Came here for an after golf meal. After being seated and looking over the menu, I told our waiter it was my first time and he had some good recommendations, including the Qallayih which was very tasty. The prices are reasonable which allowed me to try several items. Unfortunately today they didn't have any baked goods so no dessert for us. I plan on coming back again to try some different items. I would recommend giving them a try!

Farah A.

Yelp
Most authentic Arabic food I've ever had. I've had most things on the menu the best thing in my opinion is the grape leaves. The service is great every time I come everyone is so welcoming and nice. The restaurant is also decorated so cool! Really feels like you traveled across the world!! I love this place 10/10 recommend.
google avatar

Alwaysproud P.

Yelp
I love this place such a warm generous atmosphere every time I go! The family is wonderful and so accomplished at caring for customers , that you feel like family. I suggest the amazing breads freshly made in their brick oven with the delish oil and Zatar seasoning. Reminds me of being back in the Middle East when I worked there. I had meat pies as a starter and the amazing kabob for my main course. A real treat !

Charlene O.

Yelp
Un-freakin-believable! Great lightly fried falafel, lentil soup not to salty, pickled turnips stile the show, will return most definitely!!!
google avatar

Yelp
food is amazing and great service. if you are in mke area definitely need to give Taqwa a try. You won't regret it ! Portion sizes are great too!

Yelp
Five stars easy. Five stars all day. This is my new favorite restaurant!!! You must go!!! The food is delicious, flavorful, bright, herbaceous and filling without being heavy. I'm not a stranger to middle eastern cuisine and even so there were numerous menu items that I've never had before. I found it to be such a fun adventure! Have you ever found yourself yumming out loud while you eat? You probably will here! I was! I highly recommend the fattoush salad and every single baked good on the menu. Taqwa's makes me happy! The customer service here is superior to nearly anything that I've experienced elsewhere. Each staff person were gracious, very friendly and lovely to talk and engage with. Each exchange that I had with staff here brightened my day. I had a number of packages of food, without me asking or suggesting a staff person insisted on carrying my order out to my car for me in the rain. Truly, I quickly felt like family. I observed the same care and consideration given to all of their guests as well. The staff here are invested in making sure that their customers have a good experience! And they are adding a drive thru! That'll make me a frequent flyer for sure! Great for winter, pandemics, rain and my dog riding shot gun. Okay, also great for leaving the house in pajamas. True. That happens too.

Yelp
Service is amazing and food is authentic and the place is super clean. Overall, I would definitely go back
google avatar

Latiful A.

Yelp
Came in for dinner. Ambiance was nice and unique. Service was good and food was great. The tandoori chicken is memorable to say the least and the only negative is that inflation is making week night establishments feel like a formal dinner experience and formal dinners like a once in a lifetime kind of thing so you know already folks. A repeat place for sure and note food is fresh so it will take sometime.
google avatar

Tessa K.

Yelp
The service was wonderful, and our servers were very friendly and accommodating. The restaurant was clean and had lovely decorations. I had the chicken shish tawook, which came with a lot of food. On the side, I had fattoush and taboun bread with oil/seasonings. It was delicious! I highly recommend this place! : )
google avatar

Layla J.

Yelp
Customer service sucks. Everyone that works there hates people. Their food I'd hit or miss.
google avatar

Velia T.

Yelp
Amazing food. Kind, attentive service. Gorgeous decor. Need to go back. Highly recommend.

Stacey M.

Yelp
Went here to meet a friend for the evening and catch up. The atmosphere was perfect. It wasn't very busy on this Tuesday night. It definitely wasn't for lack of good food or good service. Our server was amazing! I will definitely be back here again. The food was delicious and the portions were generous. The pistachio baklava for dessert was to die for!!! Completely forgot to get pictures.

Miriam J.

Yelp
Delicious food, good portion sizes for price, very accommodating staff! The tabouleh salad was nice and tart, even the pot of tea I got was nicely balanced!
google avatar

Shanna C.

Yelp
Stand alone restaurant in the Greenfield area. It is truly a gem! I was finally able to try this out after hearing raving reviews from my friends at work. There is space for dining, and you can also get carry out. There was no shortage of individuals coming in for carry out during dinner time, so I think that speaks to how good the food is already. You can order items off of the breakfast menu for dinner time as well! I was able to try the fittih, baba ghanouj, meat pie, falafel. I absolutely love baba ghanouj, and the one here did not disappoint. It has the perfect smokiness to it and had the perfect consistency. The meat pies are slightly bigger than your palm, and there are a variety of flavors. I tried the beef one, and it was very flavorful and so fresh! The fittih is something I have never tried before. It is fried pita bread covered in a yogurt sauce with roasted pine nuts. It was delicious! The roasted pine nuts add a nice texture, and the pita bread was still slightly crunchy. Will definitely be coming back to try their other menu offerings!
google avatar

Ishtiaq S.

Yelp
As you enter the restaurant, you are amazed by the eye-catching decoration. To create an authentic atmosphere, the owners bought the rugs, pillows, and other decorative items in Jordan, including nearly wall-sized photographs of Petra and Jerusalem. A portion of the restaurant has been redecorated to resemble a traditional festive Jordanian tent. Customers can use it like a photo studio, taking pictures of themselves with their phones, and it's been popular. We found the staff friendly and the food tasty at competitive prices. A family-owned restaurant, it serves Middle Eastern dishes (Palestinian recipes) like shish kebab, grilled chicken, and lamb chops. We particularly liked falafel, chicken, and hummus. The chicken was very good, and the rice, the French fries, and the salad were also good. All the baking is done in the authentic wood-fired stone oven that is the centerpiece of the restaurant. Concisely, the restaurant has many distinctive features such as fast delivery, cozy atmosphere, large portions, creative cuisine, indoor dining, stylish interior, large menu, outdoor seating, and child-friendly. They accept credit cards, Apple Pay, and Google pay. They are open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
If you love Mediterranean or Middle Eastern cuisine (or don't), this place is a must. Much cooler inside than the location (in a big box store parking lot) suggests. Feels very authentic. Of course, it helps that the place is often filled with folks for whom this food is clearly theirs. They bake the bread (unsure what it's called) right there, so it doesn't get fresher. Take some home! Get it with the olive oil and spices on top. Fantastic! The bean dip, grape leaves (in a pile on a huge platter), baba, hummus, etc. is all fantastic. The grilled platter is a feast for the eyes and stomach. We're so lucky to have this food in Milwaukee. I live on the North Shore and am happy to make the drive to Greenfield. Do it!

Lauren W.

Yelp
Outstanding. Must go. We will definitely be back next time we are in town. Everything is fresh, homemade and incredibly delicious, the portions were generous and the incredibly reasonable prices. The environment and service were both warm and inviting from this Palestinian restaurant. As a party of five, we ordered the large platter of items and even though we were stuffed by the end, we couldn't let any of it go to waste. We were so glad we got to try so many amazing dishes. The falafel was perfect--and made converts out of a couple in our party. The platter came with hummus (light and fluffy and perfectly seasoned), lightly smoky baba ganoush (grilled eggplant dip), a small platter of salad (choose the fattouch), pickles, fresh pita bread and then a giant platter of chicken, steak and kefta (ground beef "meatballs") kebabs over more flatbread and a giant platter of seasoned rice. Definitely say "yes" when asked if you want the sauces. And even though we were so full, we had to try some dessert--Two kinds of baklava and a coconut cake.

Yelp
Don't hesitate, just go and order from Taqwa. What a gem - our server was attentive, our food came out quickly and was freshly made, and the inside decor is absolutely beautiful. You are immediately served hot pita with olive oil and spices that you mix together; it was fluffy and warm and you could taste the love made in it. We had: - Mint tea: Can't go wrong on a cold day with ~fresh~ mint! - Dawalee: Wrapped grape leaves with meat/rice inside and a roasted chicken thigh/drumstick. The grape leaves are delightfully tangy, and the chicken thigh had quite possibly some of the crispiest chicken skin I have ever sunk my teeth into! - Mixed plate with shish kabob, chicken shish tawook, and kufta kabob: all of the meat was moist, tender, and seasoned well. I loved the rice that came with! - Cheese and zaatar manakish: an excellent appetizer that came to recommendation by our server; cheesy and herby and hot - what's not to love?? - Cucumber salad: a cool accompaniment to any meat dish with yogurt - Fattoush: yet another refreshing, herby side! We had leftovers that extended into two more meals. Just do yourself a favor and give this place a try and don't second guess it! Homemade, tasty, and absolutely all-around beautiful.

Yelp
Just found this wonderful restaurant today! Fresh, delicious food! Amazing bread! Beautiful space and lovely outdoor patio. And the people can't be topped. So glad to have found Taqwa's! Oh, also great coffee!

Aminah K.

Yelp
This spot used to be an old Burger King, but no more (I say, down with fast food chain restaurants). Now adorned in rich Palestinian decor and carpets hung about, with comfortable booths and open tables, as you walk in, you'll also see their brick oven behind the counter where the owner Abdullah bakes fresh bread everyday. Taqwa's food is tasty and consistent, and while you sometimes have to wait for certain specialty baked items, it's worth it. Not the place to dine and dash, but the place to bring friends from out of town, converse, and enjoy each others company. It's odd to comment on this but the restaurant (including restrooms) are always, always clean. They sometimes have young-ish servers who might not know how to answer your questions on the menu, but it's more humorous than anything and it looks like they're stepping in as they might be short staffed on certain times or seasons. They have special menu items on certain days (Friday?) and sometimes modified hours and special meal offers during the holy month of Ramadan. Fun fact: The restaurant is named after the owner's wife. A keeper (for me, referring to the restaurant!)

Yelp
Taqwa's is a solid middle eastern restaurant. The highlight of this place is their fresh baked bread which is so soft and delicious. They serve it with olive oil and zaatar which is a perfect compliment. My favorite dish from here is the mosakhan. It is a nice portion, and the caramelized onions are the best part. The cheese fatayer is good as well. The mixed grill is nothing very special, though, so I wouldn't typically order that. Their mint lime smoothie is good too but it is quite tart. If you really like sour, you may enjoy it. I really like very sour things, so it is good to me but I acknowledge that it is pretty far on that spectrum. They have nice seating and decor that is on theme for a middle eastern restaurant. They also play great music. They have an outdoor seating area during nice weather, and they have free wifi. Solid place for a few good things if you know what they are.

Yelp
The food is good here but the low rating is because the service is horrible. The female waitress is the worst! The male waiter is running like crazy and she just stands around. He brought our food to us, but we never received our soup, appetizers, or silverware. When we canceled the apps, she just looked at us and rolled her eyes. Good food, but maybe just for takeout.

Yelp
Is not worth it the money I pay for this food it's not much with the picture completely different and test is normal Poor quality

Yelp
I'm so happy this place opened. My husband and & I love this kind of food and MKE doesn't have many options like this. Food was Yummy! Ambiance was so cute!! The young gentlemen (Waiter) was so nice! We will definitely go back!

Kami J.

Yelp
The atmosphere was lovey. Our food was absolutely Divine. From the Turkish coffee, to the falafel, to the authentic traditional cuisine.... so delicious. The mint tea was yummy to. Our server was on point: thoughtful, attentive and she offered us wonderful considerations regarding their menu. Definitely going back, don't miss out on this gem.
