The 38 Essential Toronto Restaurants

"Chef Taro Akiyama’s shop more closely mirrors the reserved fish markets of Osaka than the frantic ones of Tokyo. Offering serenity while you shop, Taro’s sells Japanese groceries to make your own sashimi, maki, uramaki, and nigiri at home. Or if you prefer, you can order any of the fresh takeaway platters for instant gratification. The vast selection of fresh fish and seafood arrives daily, including specials such as shirako (cod fish sperm sacs), uni (sea urchin), and o-toro (tuna belly)." - Tiffany Leigh

I have been to the other ones but to me service here is a lot better thanks again. ! They even separated my stuff into two as i was purchasing for my son as well ! Kevin gave me extra ginger and wasabi at no extra charger !

This was my second time trying Taro’s fish, my first time was like more than 15 years ago I couldn’t remember much. I know they have good quality fish and I wanted to have a platter of sashimi that day. So they only have small sashimi platters that are ready made if you want more variety you need to pick your own pre-packed pieces of fish from the fridge and they will slice them and make a platter for you. There were not too many choices on that day (it’s a Tuesday) unfortunately but overall they were very fresh. I paid $110 for my platter plus some extra pickled gingers and sushi rice.

Google
Tried the sushi deluxe! I would say for $35 it’s such a steal! The fish is so fresh and they are big pieces. They only start prepping them beginning at 1pm, so keep that in mind.

Google
I love taro for reliable fresh fish selection, multiple options to eat, and fair prices. Always my go to place to get great sushi. If going with groups can select your own cuts of unique seafood!

Google
Been here 3 times and each time was worse than the last. Today I went picked out a nice looking piece asked them to slice it thinly. When it was done they apologized because they cut it thick and not thin. The salmon itself was tough and had a couple bones in it. Unfortunately I will not be returning and would not recommend this place

Google
Small market/takeout combination place with well spaced-out merchandise so that you can browse comfortably even when the story is busy. They have a freezer section as well as dried pantry-type goods. My focus was on buying sushi/rolls this visit. In one of the refrigerated areas, they have a bunch of pre-cooked foods including takoyaki and rolls. I got the torched salmon roll for just under $15 plus tax and takoyaki for around $5 which are both fairly priced. The takoyaki doesn't refrigerate well so it's hard to heat up and expect the same experience as when ordered fresh. The roll was a lot better with tender salmon that was torched just enough to create that Maillard reaction without cooking the salmon. Directly behind the area with the ready-to-go foods, is the takeout area. Interestingly, ordering a freshly made-to-order roll is not that much more than the premade stuff. I'd rather get the fresh made stuff next time and see how big a difference it is. Alternatively, I'd like them to drop the prices on the pre-made stuff.

Google
Fresh delicious sushi platters and single portions that can be ordered in person or online. The shop also sells a lot of imported Japanese goods and snacks/groceries. It is on the more expensive side though.

Great place to buy sushi grade fish! We were able to make our own sushi at home which was really fun.

Yelp
I'm not an expert by any means, but this is the best quality fish I have found in Toronto. The staff is super friendly and efficient, although the prices are a bit high but worth it for the quality. This is not a sit down place; they sell sushi platters to go and sell the fish whole sale also ( but will cut for you if asked). They also sell traditional Japanese snacks and condiments for things like ramen. Super recommend!

Yelp
The hours are very particular but I finally made it by. They have a wide variety of foods but I stuck with the basics - a roll, sashimi, and miso soup. Everything is very fresh with high quality ingredients. They also have a lot of grocery staples even though the shop is fairly small - sauces, oils, spices, dessert, drinks, and prepared foods. I found the prices pretty comparable to grocery stores and although not cheap, not unreasonably priced either. They do have more high end seafood and this is where it starts to get expensive. It looks worth the price though. Staff are polite and helpful. It's just the hours are very limited - but if you can make it down it seems worth the effort. Recommended.

Yelp
The sushi and sashimi from Taro's Fish are always fresh and high-quality. You can go in and order on the spot, but it's recommended to call ahead and pre-order (especially for large orders). They have various mixed party platters, sushi and sashimi sets, rolls, nigiri and sashimi a la carte. For the sashimi platters, you can choose your own custom mix of saku (fillets). There are ready-to-eat meals (chirashi bowls, sushi sets, etc.), cold beverages, and fresh fish and seafood (already cleaned and cut) that are grab-and-go. They also carry grocery items ranging from ingredients to make sushi (rice, nori seaweed, soy sauce, ginger, wasabi, etc.) to dried noodles and Japanese snacks. The space is clean and spacious.

Yelp
It is one of the top-notch places to get fresh sashimi-grade seafood; it is extremely fresh. I would say the service is okay, not the greatest service you would get, so that is a major deduction in this review. Hours are extremely limited, so if you are planning to eat here, make sure you grab it early enough as they close at 6pm! Prices are not that cheap, so expect to pay quite a bit for the quality fish you get. The ambiance is moderate, it is just a small fish market. But you can see the things they do! (i.e. open concept: making your platter, sushi, sashimi, etc., and slicing your fish to sashimi!). Edit: I re-visited again 2 days ago. They were closed during the holidays, but this place looks new! The place looks much cleaner, and the service was better than the many times I visited last year. We purchased 1 pre-made spicy salmon and ordered fresh torched salmon maki. It costs $.50-$1 more if you order fresh. But if you are going for torched sushi, definitely go for fresh. My previous review was 3/5 at this place, but after my recent visit, I am changing it to 4/5. (The previous rating was 3/5).

Yelp
I've been meaning to try this place for years, but never got around to it. Everyone always told me how good and how fresh their fish was. Today, we finally tried the Spicy salmon roll, tako wasabi, and freshly sliced salmon sashimi. The salmon was SO fresh! Better than any other sushi restaurant I've been to. I found the prices to be cheaper too. It was about $12 for 10 pcs. I bought it as a slab, and asked the sushi chef to cut it into slices for me (You can also ask them to dice it if you plan on making your own poke salad). 5/5 The tako wasabi was wonderful. Fresh with a sharp wasabi kick. I will definitely be going back for more! 5/5 Lastly the salmon roll was good, perhaps a bit better than some restaurants, but not that memorable. 3/5 Overall, I would definitely go again!

Yelp
We came to check out the store on the recommendation from a friend. The parking lot is small and tight with vehicles coming and going. It's easy to drive by the store as it's in a small plaza. Be on the look out for MEC. Taro's Fish is on the east side of MEC. It's part grocery and part takeout sushi restaurant. The grocery portion has products like rice, sauces, nori, pickled ginger, miso soup, okonomiyaki flour, tempura flour, packets of curry, cod roe, noodles, drinks, slices of mille crepe, daifuku mochi, dorayaki, freezers with individual portions of ramen including toppings that've been vacuumed sealed, fish fillets and fins, ice cream, cheesecake, ice cream mochi, wafers, fridges with fish fillets, octopus tentacles, clams, roe, platers of packaged sashimi and fish heads. We found the grocery product prices to be quite high when compared to other stores. I suppose if you live in the area this would be a great place to purchase some pantry items as well as pick up sushi instead of visiting multiple shops but that wasn't it for us.

Yelp
TLDR: quite pricey but taste good; some people are nice; fresh-er fish than most sushi restaurants; good amount of water in sushi rice; good sushi rice!! I went here for my birthday sushi. Japanese food is my go-to food cause if you've been to Japan, you'll know how much they care about the food and its preparation. Taro give me that vibes somehow there seems to be favourites in this store, every store has one but if the store is full packed and there's a long line, it's frustrating when you see an able-bodied-full-of-ego person just cuts the line. But yeah, let's give 'benefit of the doubt' In terms of price, I bought 3 kinds of nigiri, two of each. So i have 6 nigiri in total and I paid $46 :) yep. That's the price. But yeah it's good. But for $46? Im not sure it justifies. I bought $75 worth of fish so I can make my own Chirashi or roll or nigiri. I'm really happy with it honestly. I would come back for that. The fish is fresh in my opinion. I would always come back for the products they sell but I think they could put more efficient process on their store.

Yelp
December 10, 2021 - My friend wanted to check out this store. There nice selection on fresh seafood. My friend bought a $15 set for his brother and I bought the Spicy Deluxe Roll. It was yummy and the pieces were big. Definitely worth it.

Yelp
Strictly take out only Variety of sashimi, sushi, frozen and other Japanese food items. In addition to pre-made sashimi/sushi items, you can order chirasi and special platters. It took them only 15 mins to make me a special premium nigiri set platter. Also got 2 large pieces of Uni for $18 which is reasonable Fresh and tasty

Yelp
Super fresh fish! The store is a fish market with some grocery items and a selection of takeout sushi/sashimi. One of our absolute go to place for fresh seafood! The shop is very clean and the staff are friendly.

Yelp
The sashimi/sushi here is absolutely amazing. This was the freshest sashimi I have ever had in a while and I am so glad I discovered this spot, because I'll be visiting again soon! The platter of sashimi was so delicious and tasty. You can tell how fresh the fish was with each slice. You get to choose your fish in a grocery like environment and they will slice and prepare it for you. The chirashi bowl was also so flavourful and I liked how there was a good variety of fish! Honestly salivating just thinking about this spot and looking at all the (POV) pictures. There was a line - was about a 20 minute wait, but honestly it was so worth it! I can tell why it's so popular. The staff are also very knowledgeable and friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Taro's Fish has been a staple for sushi grade seafood products, groceries and takeout. Their sushi and sashimi is always fresh. It's also a great place to stock up on your Uni (sea urchin) if your into that (we sure are). I find that it gets really busy especially for take out so pro tip - pre order ahead. it's a really small parking lot as well FYI.

Yelp
Finally got a chance to visit Taro's fish last week! It's basically a Japanese grocery store that sells sushi, Japanese's snacks and sushi grade sashimi. They had a great selection of sashimi including, salmon, toro, scallop, tuna and octopus. I find the pricing to be a bang for your buck compared to ordering a-la-Carte sashimi at any fancy sushi restaurants. They even offer to slice your sashimi for you and there's even an option to add sushi rice for a small fee. Overall, the quality of the tako (octopus) and salmon sashimi was super fresh and delicious while the scallop sashimi was a bit disappointing, I've had fresher tasting ones at sushi restaurants. Honourable mention: their seaweed salad is also very tasty!
google avatar

Kim H.

Yelp
Small local seafood market with top quality fish perfect for sushi making. We'll usually select a few varieties and have the fish cut sashimi style, bring home and make our own poke bowls. They also carry other sushi making ingredients and imported Japanese goodies.

Yelp
They have REAL seasoned cod roe! And very tasty uni. Yum :P Taro's Fish has been on my sashimiTO wish-list for a long time, and so we decided to splurge on as much sashimi as we could for Valentine's Day this year. Walking in I expected to see a sit-in area alike Diana's, but it was more like a take-out only food court/eatery, which was great because I wanted to savour all the yumminess in the comforts of my own home. Near the entrance there are asian snacks, condiments, and spices to form great asian dishes. The delicacies can be found within the large fridges at the back of the shop where you can buy meal-sized fish sashimis to be sliced on the spot by the chefs working at the other side of the store. I think these are for people who have tried everything and know what they're craving for. However, if you're new or unable to decide which ones you want, you can always go for the sashimi/sushi sets that come in regular and deluxe portions. I belong to the second type of customer, and was wowed at the different types of sashimi. I got a deluxe tray set, and then grabbed what I really came here for - UNI/Sea Urchin. Noticed how i capitalized it for importance. There was Vancouver, BC Uni and Hokkaido Uni. Having tried Hokkaido Uni before, I went for the Vancouver one as its said to be really creamy, but next time I'll know to get the Hokkaido Uni because I realized creaminess isn't the only thing that defines good uni - you definitely need the 'taste of the sea' too. I know the thing to look for in fresh sashimi is that if it's fresh, it will not have any fishy tastes. Everything in the set tasted like it just came out of the water, which is amazing. I think this is the freshest sushi I've had, almost like I was in Japan again. I did buy a wrapped portion to be sliced though: red snapper (tai) but they ran out so the lady suggested a different fish that has the similar crunchy, robust texture. Although next time I probably won't buy the foam-board and saran-wrapped uncut sashimi, because it wasn't as fresh tasting as the ones in the deluxe set. Maybe the plastic smell clung on? No idea. The freezer in the middle of the shop was a pleasant surprise. I was able to find seasoned cod roe for my mentaiko udon dish. I had been looking in asian grocery markets all over Toronto, and I finally found it here. Now I can use the seasoned roe to simmer with butter and fried kimchi to create a unami udon sauce. Blessed!! Inspired by the uni toast at Omai Sushi in Baldwin Village, I slabbed a piece of the creamy golden uni onto the freshly buttered and toasted bread. It was amazing, a rich flavour dance of the saltiness of the butter combined with the creamy texture of uni and the crispiness of the golden brown toast. 100% recommend for you to recreate this delectable snack at home, with the finest, freshest sea urchin from Taro's Fish. I'll be back again on another special occasion visit.

Yelp
We were craving for really good fish for dinner. Since during the time of physical distancing, we find ourselves here to get some fish. We walked in and Taro was prepared with alcohol wipes at the door. With an attendant also at the door to control the flow of customers that goes in and out. Once we were indoors, we were salivating on all the goodies that was available. We see the fridge with all the yummy fish and sushi rolls. We were walking around and debating on what to get. So we got a bunch of stuff and then headed home. When we started eating during dinner time, we began to devour the food: bluefin chu-toro tasted sweet and fresh, and compared to other tuna sashimi, there's a distinctive sweetness. The ebi is also sweet and fresh. All the other goodies were amazing. Yes it was a bit pricey, but during these times. We can still enjoy the yummy food is wow.
google avatar

Mandy L.

Yelp
Recommended by a few friends and family and decided to give it a try. I like how it is inside like a tiny J town feel of a marketplace. Maybe I did expected too much since it was recommended by a few people. The sashimi (chirashi don) is average.

Yelp
Taro's Fish is the place to be in Taro-onto! Ok I tried. : ) All kidding aside, if you're looking for extremely fresh and delicious sushi and sashimi made to order - This is as good as it gets imo. You won't be disappointed. First thing you need to know, this is a marketplace and not a sit down and eat place. You take things to go. Secondly they offer a medium selection of Japanese frozen goods, and constant flow of sushi/sashimi items that are being put into their fridges and freezers especially during their busy times which I would assume are during the lunch and dinner rush. They have a made-to-order place inside where you can order several rolls, assorted sets, signature rolls and 2PC nigiris a la carte as well. I will say, not every roll is offered on the spot so if you really have a craving for certain things, it may be better to call in and order ahead of time. Especially when it gets busy and they got tons of orders being called in, they may not be able to make some of the more complex items on the spot. Food: Fortunately, the waitress attendant overheard us and helped us with the menu which is right near the interior kiosk. We were able to order or get: - (2) Chirashi orders - Made to order. It was soooo delicious. Probably the best Chriashi bowl I've had in a long time. They had little bits of mushroom and seaweed mixed into the rice. *Tears of happiness* The sushi itself was so fresh. Even before we ate, we could smell that seafood freshness coming from the delivery boxes. - (2) Negitoro Maki Rolls - This was the gold star winner. The toro was sooo good. The scallion had that amazing compliment and everything was super fresh. - (1) Torched Salmon Roll - We grabbed the 2nd to last one from the fridge of the pre-made rolls. They couldn't make this one to order because it probably is more complex and they were super busy. Even so, the salmon was torched perfectly and the ratio of salmon was perfect. Inside there was more sashimi grade raw salmon and I really couldn't have asked for a perfect roll to have copped. Summary: Taro's Fish is a must visit and try imo. I would personally recommend calling ahead and ordering and make sure you plan their schedule into your itinerary as they are not open every day. Only open Wed-Sat from Noon to 6PM. Closed all other days so the window isn't that big. HIGHLY recommend the negitoro maki roll and the torched salmon! There may be a chance I try and go back before our vacation is over! LOL : )

Yelp
This was our first visit to Taro's but it won't be our last! The location is small, a bit far, and a line up was outside, but worth the wait. I read how fresh the fish is, and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and taste. The rolls were a bit messy and didn't hold together, but perhaps it was a busy day. Their items are on the pricey side, but I don't mind paying for good quality. Parking is a bit tricky during peak hours.

Yelp
My go to spot for fresh sashami. Plenty of variety to choose from and they slice it for you for no extra charge!
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
For the last few months, we order from this incredible take out joint/fish market/grocery store almost every week. The rolls are incredibly fresh and delicious, and either need nothing or just the smallest dab of soy sauce and wasabi. Favourite sushi in the entire city, and I have tried my fair share. The grocery store aspect is also really nice, but we generally just order pick up and do not enter at all. Go to order is the yellow tail roll, spicy salmon, torched salmon, eel and avocado roll, and with an extra piece of fresh salmon added in and sliced. Salivating just thinking about it, and planning to order again this weekend. Thank you Taro's fish, for being the best!

Yelp
This place has become a bi-weekly staple since the pandemic hit. A no frills takeout place, but offers a wide selection of fresh sashimi. We typically get the sashimi assortment tray and add-on of a couple sashimi based on what's in season (e.g. BC uni and spot prawn, Chu- and O-toro, hamachi). Fresh fish, reasonable prices and way cheaper than if you dine-in at a high end Japanese restaurant. Highly recommended. They also have a grocery section which makes it convenient to stock up on pantry necessities like kewpie mayo, sushi rice vinegar, and green tea.
google avatar

Amabel S.

Yelp
Takes me a while to go to this place, but I have heard many good things about Taro's Fish. There's always a line. Around 15 mins. When you enter they have great selection of fish cuts from sashimi grade to the cook one. And theres sauces, snacks, noodles to make a Japanese food. The premium chirashi are our fav! They really served a high quality of sashimi on a bed of sushi rice. Personally I could not eat Tuna, but here I ate Negitoro just fine. And I also bought Otoro sliced. It really melts in your mouth. Coming back for sure! Follow @astravel_eats for more

Yelp
Taro's is Japanese owned fish shop that offers delectable sushi grade fish in addition to various other Japanese edibles. You can buy the fish available at the shop to, and either get then to prep it for you for you to enjoy at the small bar seating they have by the window, or you can take it home to enjoy in your pajamas. I find the items a little on the pricier side compared to other supermarkets but you really can't beat the quality at Taro's when it comes to sushi specific items like saba or amaebi. Actually, you can't really get these items consistently anywhere else (T&T or Diana's Seafood will have them on occasion)! Service is always super friendly. They even gave me complimentary wasabi when I forgot to buy some to take home the last time I was there. I just wished they were open more often! Parking can be found at the small parking lot outside. A warning not to park there if you're going to MEC (they have their own underground parking) as you might get a ticket, according to a security guard that was walking around the premises.
google avatar

Yukie C.

Yelp
Pricey but the quality is top notch. Closest thing I've had to good quality sushi in Japan! The fish is so fresh and just melts in your mouth, my favorite is definitely chuutoro! The rice to fish ratio is also perfect! This place is legit and worth a try if you're looking for high quality sushi!

Yelp
Had take out from Taro today. The Sushi for two was excellent. Will go back often. The service was excellent but the phone line was always busy.
google avatar

Tomoko I.

Yelp
This is one of the best sushi. Torched salmon was good. Tempura was good. And there are many other good things. Staff are friendly and helpful. I am happy to find this place.

Janet L.

Yelp
Amazing quality of fish, scallops, and shrimps. Quite pricey but you get what you pay for. It's also best to go there early when they open, so you'll have more options to choose from. Otherwise if you go later in the day, some dishes may be sold out.
google avatar

Lornia C.

Yelp
The fish here NEVER disappoints! It's as fresh as it can be. I love coming here to splurge, grab and throw whatever I want into a basket, knowing it'll be glorious. This is my favourite place for sashimi. The only down side, as with all fresh seafood places, is that they don't always have certain seafood in stock, such as mirugai (geoduck), akagai (blood clam), and sometimes even uni (sea urchin) can either be sold out, or not in stock. But when they're there, it's guaranteed to be fresh and delicious. I keep mentioning fresh, because even my mom, who has an extremely sensitive stomach, doesn't get upset stomach from eating their sashimi. If you want pre-arranged chirashi (sashimi on rice), they have it too, though I personally prefer to choose my own sashimi and ask them to cut and platter it for me. Excellent service, reasonable prices.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! Taros fish sells reasonably priced sashimi-grade fish of incredible quality! Located just down the road from North York General Hospital, this little gem is a bit tough to find. Parking is also limited, so I don't suggest coming on the weekend. Nevertheless, it's worth a visit! Taros Fish carries a selection of salmon, tuna, octopus, scallops, uni, etc. Most of the fish is either from BC or Hawaii. If you're lucky, you will also find some glistening Hokkaido scallops for about $12-$14. If you buy the sashimi grade fish, they will also cut it for you and serve it with some wasabi. There is also a variety of frozen seafood at a decent price. You can pick up a large octopus tentacle for $18. Overall, a great place for some reasonably priced sashimi & seafood.

Yelp
Was very excited to try this place out. Purchased the Sushi for Two, Chirasi, and BC Uni. When I opened the "fresh" BC Uni, I discovered that it had gone bad. It smelled so bad I lost my appetite for the whole meal. I asked for a refund for the uni and they refused to refund me, which is messed up since uni costs a fortune and we splurged on this. Seems like this is a common occurrence here. There are many 1 star reviews on other sites that talk about rotten sashimi for take-out at this restaurant.
google avatar

Alina C.

Yelp
I would give the 4 stars but I do find the prices a little too high for what you get. I haven't ordered from their menu but I'm sure the fish is super fresh. I usually go by to grab one of their rolls, bowls or tempura that are pre-packaged for a grab and go lunch. I'll have to order from their menu or have them make me fresh sashimi/sushi dishes one day when I feel like splurging.
google avatar

Angel C.

Yelp
Do you like Sashimi? How about some SUPER FRESH toro, salmon, scallops, uni, clams, and much more? What if I said you can pick all that separately and create your own platter? Just to top it off... you can even WATCH them make it live, right in front of you! Taro's Fish has always been my go-to place ever since a friend of mine recommended that I try out this place a few years ago. Every time I'm craving for some fatty toro, and a little bit of everything else, I love coming here to pick out my own pieces without worrying if it's going to taste good. If you're looking for some premium sashimi at a VERY reasonable cost, this is the place you'd want to visit! They've got all the common fish/sashimi you'd be looking for from all over the world.

Yelp
I've always wanted to try this little gem. There is a small shared parking lot with other patron of the small plaza. Since today is Valentine's day why not give myself a good reason to stop in and see what all the fuss is about. Since it is Valentine's day I wasn't expecting a huge selection of fish since I arrived sort of late around 4:00pm. First off like I said parking lot is small so I was lucky enough to score a spot right away when I pulled into the plaza. I stepped inside and was wowed by how roomy and big it actually was inside, from the outside I thought it was going to be a small cramped market but I was wrong. There are a few fridges lined up against the wall and some freezers in the center of the store, on the opposite side is the sushi bar and fresh fish area. I immediately walked to he fridge to see what kind of fish is left for my choosing. I picked up the basket and started to fill it with fresh BC uni, salmon from Ireland, blue fin tuna, large shrimps, and a white fish from Greece. I'm sure if it wasn't for Valentine's day there may be even more selection of fish. Once you've selected your seafood of choice you line up and see what the damages are, once you've settled up with the cashier all you need to do is tell them to slice it for you. The cashier brings your seafood over to the chef and he starts to slice and plate your selection for you to enjoy at home. It took about 15min after the cashier brought it over to the chef to wait in queue. They will also give you a small bag of ice for you to keep your food cold while it is being transported home. If sushi and maki's are your thing you need to order at the sushi bar and then tell the cashier your order. I placed an order of 2 for ikura sushi which is salmon roe. Everyone here is so friendly and helpful. This will definitely not be my only time here.

Yelp
I was scrolling through yelp and realized I didn't yelp this place yet. And my first thought was: "HOW could I have not reviewed this place????!!!?!!?" This is my GO-TO sashimi takeout spot. I'm telling you, this place is amazing. The sushi is FRESH and the prices are FAIR. You pick what you want from the fridges, all the fish is pre packaged with the price tag on top, so there are zero surprises (none of that "$5 per pounds" stuff where I have no idea how much a pound feels like. Highly recommend... I always tell my friends to go here.

Yelp
After all these years I have finally tried Taro's Fish and that's mostly due to their last call being pushed back from 5 to 6:30 on the weekends. So thank you Taro's Fish! It primarily is a takeout and a fish supermarket place and they have a really interesting concept here. You can pick your sashimi from their fridge and then pay for it, and then take it to the chefs and they will cut it up nicely for you! And apparently you can build your own chirashi if you want even. The prices here do seem a bit on the pricier side for the prepared sushi but it's reasonable considering the quality you get. We got one of the spicy Salmon rolls in the 'to-go' section and it was amazing! The salmon was full and there's no bread crumb fillers here. It was fresh and delicious. If you go closer when it opens then you can get them closer to when they were made! There was a lot of varieties of sashimi from all over the places. I like how they tell you where they get all the fish from! We also got the charashi which is probably the best deal at Taro's, at only $13.50 it's absolutely loaded with assorted sashimi. There were two pieces of pretty much everything and it was on a lovely bed of flavored rice with nori and even the pickled vegetables. Unfortunately there isn't any place to eat it there so you may have to resort to eating it in the car like we did! But that's perfectly acceptable because you see everyone is doing the same thing. I will definitely be back here if I'm in the area; good quality fish and the customizability makes it a winner in my books!

Yelp
A hidden gem. Unfortunately, when we got there a little past 2pm, we couldn't actually order sushi because they didn't take orders from 2-4pm. We still ended up getting the sushi that was already prepared and sashimi from the refrigerators. Sushi and sashimi pieces were really fresh and tasty. It was super yummy with a great variety of fish types. The prices were reasonable for the quality of sushi and sashimi you get. We were really excited to try uni, however the piece we got in the premade sashimi platter wasn't what we expected. That was the only piece that didn't taste fresh with a strong scent. I would definitely come back here on a time that I can order my sushi!

Yelp
Heard a lot of great reviews of this place and it certainly lived up to the hype! Got the sushi for 2 platter and the torched salmon roll which I both recommend. Called around 12:15PM and I was able to pick up 15 mins later. Friendly service and 100% would definitely go back again.

Yelp
I used to love to get sushi from Taro sushi when they were located in JTown back in the day where the quality was always great and the prices were reasonable (yup I do sound like a geezer on the porch telling the kids to get off the lawn). Ever since they moved to the current location, I've frequented the location several times through the years and never came away impressed. Prices are much higher and the quality did not increase accordingly. I consider myself to be a pretty picky sushi and sashimi eater and through the years they continue to get rave reviews which I'm doubtful about. But today's visit just about reaffirmed my experience at Taro from recent years. And what's more disappointing today is the questionable integrity of the establishment that I was exposed to. I ordered the chirashi. The look of the fish generally looked tempting. The chirashi had pieces of salmon, snapper, octopus, shrimp, tamago, tuna and some ikura on a bed of basil leaf. The rice was well seasoned with mushroom, ginger and sesame which was the highlight of the whole thing. Everything else went down hill from there. The fish in general was not of super great quality. They lacked the sweetness I'm really expecting from really fresh sashimi. The snapper also had a lot of tendon in them making them hard to chew through. The Saba was equally bad with a strong bitter metallic after taste; similar to ones that you would get at AYCE restaurants. The salmon that was visible from the plastic covering had a good amount of fat in it but once you take off the initial layer, based on the cut and the lack of lines of salmon fat, you can tell that they've tried to squeeze in some odds and ends into the chirashi. I've got the feeling that if you buy the expensive stuff you may get quality however if you are buying just regular stuff Taro really doesn't cut it with the necessary value and quality. The deceitful tactics is also quite appalling. To some degree this is telling me that Taro is not necessarily all about the customers. If you can't do the basics right as a fish/sashimi market, how can I trust it with the higher end stuff? I will not be returning to Taro anytime soon.

Yelp
Fell in love when I walked in! Fresh sashimi grade seafood and a variety of ready made & freshly made sushi/nigiri/roll selection! Mesmerizing to watch chefs slice the fish, and loved looking at all the different types. Downside is that it's extremely expensive, but freshness compensates. Also tried one of their mochi pieces ~ it was soooooo goooooood Overall would recommend checking out. Some quick lunch there would be nice too. No place to sit but lots of grab n gos if you're busy. By subway station, and although you don't take orders between 2-4PM, there are pre-made ones available. Would recommend salmon rolls and chirashi ~

Yelp
To give fellow Yelper some background. I am an absolute sushi fanatic. I love sushi day in and day out. I've been to Japan (Osaka and Tokyo) for sushi. Yes sushi in Japan is unbelievable, but this place is absolutely amazing. Heads up, it'd not a restaurant it is a fish market style where you pick your own sashimi and the chef will slice it for you to take home. You pay for the high quality, it's not cheap, it's rare to find this type of quality in Toronto. I highly recommend if you want some high quality sushi and don't mind cutting the bank.

Yelp
Visited Taro's Fish for my birthday recently. Yes, as many had pointed out, it is strange to go to a fish market for your birthday. Thank you for your keen observations. Yes it is strange (I prefer the word unique). Don't judge my lifestyle choices. It was a great decision! To be fair, the sitting arrangement is not the greatest. The ambiance is almost non-existence. The service is nothing to write home about. it is important to keep in mind, Taro's Fish is not a restaurant, after all, it is a fish market. Regardless, I had a very positive experience! We ordered the family party tray (40 pieces), $60. This includes an array of selection including: Tuna nigiri, Salmon nigiri, Hamachi nigiri, Shrimp nigiri, California roll, spicy salmon roll, dragon roll and dynamite roll. We added the torched sushi ($12) and blue fin tuna o-toro ($40) to top things off. Taro's Fish is by far one of the freshest place I have ever been to in Toronto. As I age (don't ask me about my actual age please), I am starting to appreciate quantity over quantity. Taro's Fish is definitely a great choice if you are seeking an option beyond AYCE.

Yelp
I love love love love love this place! It has the most fresh sashimi that is cut right in front of you. For those who haven't been here before, you get to choose a fillet of sashimi from their fridge, pay for it at the counter, and the sashimi is brought to the chefs, who slice the sashimi and arrange all the sashimi in a platter. I've been here several times and I've gotten the salmon, tuna, shrimp, surf clam, scallop, and uni. I loved all of it - my favourite are the shrimp and scallop! I'm still waiting to try the toro. Can't wait to go there again! I highly recommend going to this place for sashimi! Note that there isn't any sit down spots in the store - all sashimi is for take out. Also it is on the pricier side but I definitely think it's worth a try!

Yelp
What a treat! It's no Tsukiji Fish Market, but it's still a great place for fresh fish! The prices are very fair for the quality of the fish. They've got everything; The cashiers will even check with you if you need the fish to be sliced (sashimi). The location is quite small but easy to find, with plenty of parking. Although it gets fairly busy regardless of the hour. We arrived minutes after they opened, and most of the uni and Hokkaido scallop trays were gone! Luckily, the staff is constantly restocking the fridges. Amazing! There was a ton of variety like salmon (Ireland, Chile, BC), tuna (Mexico, Sri Lanka), scallop (Hokkaido), uni (Boston, Korea). Anything you don't find in the fridges, they may have by the sushi chefs - so don't be afraid to ask! They also sell many other products like rice vinegar, sushi rice seasoning, soba noodles and various soy sauce. Great, in-case you're missing something - no need to drive elsewhere. All the pre-packed sashimi trays we got were amazing and made out a very lovely dinner. Don't let the size of the trays fool you - it's a lot of fish! Can't wait to try the chirashi and party trays next!

Yelp
Taro's Fish is SO good. The quality of their products is always amazing. The prices are fair for what you get. The fish is always fresh and delicious. They have sliding door refrigerators with small slabs of fish that are individually packaged that you can request to have sliced upon payment. If you get a couple of different varieties, they'll slice them and arrange all of it beautifully on a bigger platter for you! They have some pre-made rolls/ chirashi bowls in one of the refrigerators but you can also order nigiri and other things at the counter at the back. The staff are all running around because they are so busy all the time, but they are very helpful if you ask them a question. NOTE: There is no seating on the inside of Taro's Fish because it's more of a take out place/fish market, but if you request it, they'll give you ice so your food doesn't go bad on your way home to eat it!

Yelp
fresh fish and good services. Sushi is a bit pricey though. I don't like the charashi bowl which is mediocre.

Yelp
The good: The thing about Taro's fish is that it is both a restaurant and a fishmarket, that means you can either dine in or have it takeout. They have fresh fish here, but they also have a variety of Japanese food that you can pair up with the sushi. If you are a sashimi lover, then you have to go here. I can't specify which sashimi to go for because their selection varies each time. Pick up the green tea cheesecake (frozen) if you want one of the best tasting desserts ever! The bad: the price can ride up on you fairly quickly. Be cautious of your selection! (Not that it's a bad thing but try to have self control) The ugly: there isn't a lot of places to sit down and eat. So don't expect to have a spot if you order in. Neutral: they have odd opening and closing times so be sure to check before you go here. Better for takeout than dine in. Not good for groups.

Yelp
In my opinion Taro Fish offers some of the best sashimi in Toronto. It is streets ahead of the all you can eat sushi shops. Prices are reasonable and the fish is always of the best grade. (There are of admittedly some omakase restaurants that serve high quality meals but prices and availability is not always easily accessible. They should be set aside to celebrate special occasions). Taro Fish offers a choice which is more balanced approach to everyday dining

Yelp
Went to Taro for the first time to get fresh sashimi for my sister's birthday. Line was not bad the day I went. Went inside and picked what I wanted . Then bringing to the counter to have them sliced. When I got home and opened the sashimi platter, it was disappointing on how they placed the sashimi, it looked unappetizing. I know spending$185 might not be as much as other customers spent, but still make it more presentable. I did not have a good first experience. Overall, it was fresh but I am sure I can get fresh sashimi esle where.

Yelp
Taro's fish is my go to for a quick take out and quality sushi place. It actually runs by Japanese staff and chef. The fish and seafood are a bit pricy but the quality is much better than the ones you expect in an AYCE or regular sushi restaurant/ take out. The photo is their sushi supreme combo - with 8 pcs of premium sushi by chef's choice. Much aesthetically made and joyfully tasted. Other than this, my go to would be their torched salmon & spicy salmon sushi ( yes! I'm a salmon lover! ) - one of the best sushi take out places in uptown. Be mindful of their open hours, I believe they only open 4 days a week with short hours. Check before you go! Overall I recommend this place if you are looking for authentic Japanese food in uptown and some Japanese snacks!( yes it is indeed a Market)
