The Best Halal Food in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Located within the Eastport Food Carts, Taste of Afghan does explore a wider breadth of cuisines from around the region, but its best dishes stick to the country referenced in its name. The cart adorns tender mantoo dumplings with tomato, yogurt, and mint sauces, which diners devour to reveal their core of beautifully seasoned beef. Pair them with the kabuli pulao, an Afghani rice dish that derives its layers of flavor from whole spices like cardamom and cumin and the subtle sweetness of raisins. Place orders ahead by calling the cart, or get delivery through Grubhub or Uber Eats." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

The Best Restaurants and Bars in Portland’s Foster-Powell | Eater Portland

"Near the north entrance of the bustling Eastport Food Carts on Southeast 82nd, Tastes of Afghan encompasses influences from all of the country’s neighboring cultures: Persian, Chinese, Mongolian, as well as south Asian. The cart executes better-known dishes like butter chicken and chicken tikka with care, though the move is to go for Taste of Afghan’s specialties — the sweet and savory harmony of Afghani pulao, tender steamed mantoo dumplings, and a cup of dogh, a tangy mint and cucumber yogurt drink. Indoor seating available, as well as covered outdoor seating with fire pits." - Nathan Williams

Taste Of Afghan Review - Peckham - London - The Infatuation

"Sometimes you leave your house with only one thing on your mind: food. That means no time to wait in queues, no patience for a 20-minute history lesson about the heritage of the chanterelle mushrooms used in the pâté, and absolutely no small plates. When a satisfying, delicious meal is your top priority, head to this no nonsense spot on Peckham’s Rye Lane. Here you’ll find plates of piping hot lamb kabali pilau loaded with carrots and raisins, chicken karahi in a fresh, light tomato sauce, and banjan borani - which should all be on your table. It’s a great place to have in your back pocket for a lowkey weeknight dinner if you happen to be nearby, and it’s the perfect restaurant for a group of hungry people who forgot to make a reservation on a Thursday evening." - Rianne Shlebak

Google
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. This is by far the most delicious afghani food I've ever had! We were visiting Portland when we came across this food truck and it was AWESOME! The owner was super nice and generous too with the quantities! I'll definitely be going back whenever I'm in Portland next!

Google
Absolutely the best Afghan food I've ever had in my life! The Kabuli Pulao was outstanding—rich in flavor with a generous portion of meat that made it well worth the price. The Chapli Kababs were fresh, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. Everything tasted authentic and homemade. On top of the amazing food, the owner was incredibly generous and welcoming, which made the experience even better. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for real Afghan cuisine!

Google
It’s the best Afghan food and prices are fair. We have being here a few times and really enjoyed the food. We highly recommend it for those looking for Afghan or Mediterranean food!

Google
Tried “Taste of Afghan” today and WOW — this truck lives up to its name. I had the Manto dumplings and the chicken wrap, and both were absolutely mouthwatering. The flavors were exactly what I was hoping for — rich, savory, and packed with authentic Afghan spice. And I’ve got to say — the woman working there was incredibly friendly and welcoming. She made the whole experience even better with her kindness and great energy. Whether you’re new or craving something satisfying and flavorful, this spot will NOT disappoint. Definitely coming back to try more from their menu. Highly recommend!

Google
First time eating here i love their food I will definitely be adding this location as a go-to for places and in my saved option to eat again.but the lunch plate offered plenty of food. I highly recommend if you haven't been here thank you

Google
I’ve been seeing afghan food on social media for awhile and specifically kabobs and eggplants combos. I’ve been hyper fixated on this forever and I knew Taste of Afghan was around and they had the eggplant I’ve been wanting to try! I was able to stop by at the food carts and ordered a combo plate with chicken and beef with rice. The lady was so sweet and kind and let me try the eggplant because they offer it as an entree not a side. SO KIND. I was very excited. The food was very tasty and yummy. Also the eggplant did not disappoint this was so good and I will only eat it this way definitely worth the time to wait and try...The chicken was juicy and flavorful I ate it all so fast i wished I had more haha. The lentils was also flavorful along with the spicy mint sauce. I will be returning as this is now one of my favorite dishes! Thank you!!! I don’t know if there are other afghan food options east of the willamette so I highly recommend trying this place out

Google
I had an incredible experience at Taste of Afghan! The Combo Palette was the perfect way to enjoy a variety of flavors every item was fresh, perfectly cooked, and full of authentic Afghan taste. The Afghani Mantu stood out as a favorite, with soft dumplings filled with seasoned meat and topped with rich yogurt and lentil sauce absolutely mouthwatering. I also tried the Chicken Wrap, which was juicy, flavorful, and wrapped in soft, fresh bread with crisp veggies. The prices are very fair for the quality and portions, and the freshness of every dish really makes a difference. Highly recommend Taste of Afghan for anyone who loves honest service, great prices, and unforgettable flavors 🫶❤️

Google
Came to visit Portland, was looking for a good place to get afghan food. Hands down, very authentic and very flavorful food. The two ladies were amazing. Loved the place overall and had great experience

Yelp
This place is amazing! I went here some friend from Afghanistan and we were all blown away by how delicious everything we order was!

Yelp
Delicious Afghani beef pulao. Pulao is full of flavour with super soft beef pieces. We took Chapli kebab and Mandi too. Chapli kebab tasted good , spiced well. Mandoo or the dumplings were but too doughy. This place is in east port cart area and probably one of the better seen traditional menu's seen around from that region.

Yelp
In general, Afghan food never disappoints and Taste of Afghan was no exception! I ordered #22, the Borani Banjan, for $14. It took about 10 minutes to prepare and it seemed like it was being made to order. In any case, this was a delicious vegetarian dish (eggplant in a yogurt sauce)! Other vegetarian options included a salad, a chickpea salad, garlic and plain naan and French fries. More to try next time! The ladies who served me were very sweet. This food truck is located within the Eastport Food Cart pods. There were a lot of other trucks that looked great, but given the choice I would come back to Taste if Afghan in a heartbeat. Parking is free on the street and was fairly easy to find. There is plenty of seating within the food cart pod and they even had a mist-er running because it was a warm afternoon. I took my food home and it was still very hot about 15 minutes after receiving it. I will be back!

Yelp
Poor business when people are not there when it says open. "Please knock for assistance." Nobody is there. At least put closed sign. Bad business during business hours, nobody there to take order.

Yelp
So glad we chose this cart! We got #1 and #2 (beef dumplings in photo). Absolutely delicious - so fresh and flavorful

Yelp
This place is too good! I stopped in yesterday for a bite to eat; having never tried Afghan food, I decided I felt adventurous. I'm sort of a picky eater so I felt a tiny bit anxious that I may not like it -- I couldn't have been more wrong! Not only was EVERYTHING delicious, the food cart was impeccably clean. This latter point is huge for me, as I am immunosuppressed and I can't risk getting sick. I have been known to walk out of restaurants that look less than clean and turn away from food carts that appear unsanitary. However, the ladies who run Taste of Afghan couldn't have been cleaner -- or more friendly. The food took a while to prepare, but the cart is in a nice little venue that isn't too crowded for a Saturday afternoon. They also provide a convenient buzzer for when your food is prepared. After receiving our food, each lady peered out at different points to ensure that we were enjoying our food and didn't need anything. I will certainly be back! since I'm already craving the chicken varke (#15). TL;DR This was above and beyond the best food cart experience I have ever had! DELICIOUS food and even better service!

Yelp
The butter chicken will make your toes curl, it's so good! We ordered the following items: Butter chicken Seekh Kabob Biryani Rice (medium) Chicken Varke Borani Banjan Gulab Jamun Sheer Chai I'm from Seattle and will drive here just for to eat here! Plus the ladies who cook and hold down the kitchen are so amazingly sweet and hospitable. Honestly the food was fabulous and it feels wonderful to support this wonderful business.. If you like Butter Chicken!! Eat here and thank me later.

Yelp
Excellent from start to finish. Customer service was wonderful, so pleasant and the owner made adjustments to our order to help cater to our needs. Food was incredible. Fresh and delicious. I will definitely be a repeat customer!

Yelp
Five of us paid a visit to this cart pod, and four members of the group decided to order a wide variety of things from the Taste of Afghan menu, so we shared a feast. We tried Varke (similar to samosas), Kofteh, Borani Banjan (eggplant in a peppery sauce), a beef wrap, multiple types of naan, dumplings covered in a tomato sauce with chickpeas, a dessert that looked like donut holes, covered in a sweet syrup, and I'm pretty sure I've left a few things out. Every food item was a treat. The only item that we didn't find delicious was a yogurt drink with mint and cucumber. All these items are things that we enjoy regularly, but something about the way they combined in this beverage turned out to be more bitter than the refreshing accompaniment to slightly spicy food that we were hoping for. You may guess that we ordered too much food to consume in one sitting, and you'd be right. Fortunately, everything reheated beautifully, and the bright, spicy sauce that was served on the side for multiple dishes went perfectly with the leftovers.

Yelp
Ordered the Afghan Biryanis #4 with an order of nan bread as well. Very good and loved the spicy chicken rice combo mixed with sweetness of the yogurt. This food truck paradise has lots of food options!
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
I tried the mantoo which are beef dumplings, topped with onion, tomato sauce, yogurt, mint sauce and dal (chickpeas). What I love about the dumplings is that they are made fresh to order. However, the beef dumplings didn't have much flavor, the wrapper itself didn't tightly wrap the filling removing some of the flavor that was probably there. However, the toppings of the onion, tomato sauce, yogurt, mint sauce and dal (chickpeas) really seasoned it well. The dal seemed a little undercooked (some pieces were hard, some were soft) and was a little salty, but was balanced out by everything in the mantoo if you combined everything. I also got a side of naan which is made fresh to order. It was so good to dip it in some dal!

Yelp
Great Afghan food in portland! Reminds me of being back in New York with all the great afghan restaurants. I wish they could expand with more food carts and also come to the west side!

Murtaza A.

Yelp
This is the best food I have had in Portland, possibly the best food I have had in years. My friends and I ordered and shared the Chapli Kabob, Afghani Pulao, Seekh Kabob, and Boolani. It was incredible. The Boolani perfectly toasted, the kabobs brilliantly grilled, the rice simply wondrous. Words are scarce to describe our experience. I say this to everyone: Go. But should you be of Afghani, Pakistani, or Indian heritage, I say one thing only: Ghar yaad aajaega.

Yelp
A recent text from a friend brought us some nice offerings from this food cart. Totally unexpected, he came by our place and dropped off three or four dishes. There was an eggplant stew (borani banjan), a butter chicken in a red sauce, some ground beef patties - Kofta, some naan, and some condiments. Totally unknowing, we had no idea what we were faced with. Turns out, this is a very flavorful set of offerings from this food cart. The chicken has a nice spicy flavor. The Kofta was well cooked, and the eggplant - a personal favorite - was just right. I guess I'll have to go find this place and order from them again!

Yelp
I was feeling homesick and looked for Afghan places in the area and found Taste of Afghan! At the truck, I was greeted and served by the two sweet ladies. Prices are great for the quality and quantity of food. I ordered mantu, Afghan palao (qabuli palao), and chicken tikke. The mantu was amazing, authentic Afghan flavor with yogurt, daal, and spices on top for a beautiful presentation and flavorful taste. It had just been made too. The same goes for the palao and chicken tikke, so fresh I could see the steam rising from the food (they also have a tandoor used for cooking the naan in the truck -- awesome !) Flavors were on point and reminded me of my grandmother's food. Also got the sheer chai, delicious. If you want to try something new, try Afghan food here at THIS spot! I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Great food and great people , they absolutely amazing , perfect spices, perfect portions, also they love what they do!

Yelp
Amazing...everything. The Afghani pulao is so flavorful. It is a rice dish like no other. The mantoo dumplings are covered.in a sauce that melts in your mouth.. just ordered the garbanzo bean salad to go. Can't wait to try everything on the menu.. btw: the.service is wonderful and I appreciated.tasting the homemade goodness in every bite.

Yelp
Super yummy!!!!! We got the 5,9, and 12. My favorite was the butter chicken! So flavorful and delicious. Definitely recommend :)

Yelp
I've been on the hunt for Afghan food. I was beyond happy to hear of this food cart. I ordered the mantoo, chicken karke and garlic naan. Omg it tasted so good!!!! I'm Afghan and can say this is one of my new favorite food carts. Can't wait to try the other items.
google avatar

Sylou T.

Yelp
The two sisters running the cart are so nice, very sweet ladies. The food was great, fresh and tasty. Husband and I shared the beef meatballs dish (kofta) with naan and the butter chicken in a red sauce with rice. The beef meatballs came with a sweet sour red dipping sauce (like a salsa) and some "yogurt" dip sauce I think. We will be back and try more dishes!
google avatar

Dana S.

Yelp
What an awesome new cart! The food was great, nicely spiced, and the flavors were slightly unfamiliar but tasted like comfort food. We got the eggplant (amazing!), kebabs (delicious!), and the chicken (yum!), plus naan and rice and the fried desert rings--they are super sweet, so you've been warned. The two sisters running this cart are the sweetest, and you can tell they make everything with care. This is a great addition to a really great new pod. Definitely come check this place out.

Simeon R.

Yelp
I'm not typically a fan of this kind of food but wow this was good. The chicken was perfect and even the rice itself was incredibly tasty. The only complaints I could really think of for this place is personal stuff I know many people would like, such as the spiciness of the food. While I was not the one who ordered the food I heard from the one who did that the owners were very nice as well and even recognized her from when she bought food from them a while back. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Sharoof A.

Yelp
I've been there so many times now and every time the food is perfectly yummy . It's very authentic Afghani cuisine very reasonable price and very friendly two sisters. I highly recommended it to anyone who love the authentic taste

Zachary G.

Yelp
What an incredible treat. The food here is flavorful, fresh, and full of life. The friendly women here sure know how to cook some delicious food. I ordered butter chicken, rice, dal, and chicken tikke. The butter chicken was super flavorful and creamy, the rice was perfectly cooked and fresh, and the chicken tikke was seasoned to perfection. I cannot wait to return to this food truck. We should be so lucky as to have this in Portland!
google avatar

Farzad Z.

Yelp
I gave them 5 stars because there is not more than 5 stars! This place deserves more stars! The food was absolutely delicious! After telling them we (my wife and I) were visiting from out of state they gave us hot tea free of charge! Who does that??!!! that's the hospitality of this place and the Afghan people! I highly recommend Taste Of Afghan!!!

Rhonda O.

Yelp
This food truck is my favorite in Portland! Partly because the food is unique and tasty but also because the two sisters running it are so kind. We stop here nearly every time we drive through Portland and wish we lived close enough to visit more regularly. Everything we've tried has been spectacular, especially the borani banjan and mantoo. Even their plain naan is excellent!
google avatar

Yuliya S.

Yelp
Super sweet lady, Ive had 2 of their dishes the chicken tikke and the kebab and both times was very satisfied. The spices they use really get your taste buds going. Will definitely be back!

Hamid J.

Yelp
we came here from salem to Portland just to get some food to be honest it was good it's always good to have taste of home and very nice worker

Afifa Z.

Yelp
Delicious bolani and afghan food made by the sweetest women. The bolani dough is made fresh and I also loved the afghani Palau with chicken. Must eat in Portland!
google avatar

Emma C.

Yelp
The place is very clean and the two sisters are very sweet. I ordered chicken Bryrani which came with a yogurt sauce and a side salad. The yogurt sauce was refreshing and valences out the heavy rice dish and the salad was a good palate cleanser. The chicken Byrani was very flavorful but, the chicken was dry other than that the portions was great and very filling.

Yoav G.

Yelp
Great food and clean food truck . Ate there a few times now and always enjoyed very unique and flavorful food great service

Merriam W.

Yelp
I have only had the Afghani Biryani from this place but it is honestly one of the best dishes I have had in all of Portland. It's complex, fragrant, and spicy. I could honestly eat it every day. I know I should branch out and eat the other dishes at this place as I have full confidence that they would be just as tasty but I seriously worry I won't be able to stop myself from coming every day.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
This food is delicious! I ordered the Biryani, garlic Naan bread, and a few chicken varkes. They all have amazing flavors! I am excited to try out the rest of the menu!

Yelp
Okay. The butter chicken at this cart is so good. I've never tasted anything like it and I don't think I will anywhere else. It's magical.

Dawoud K.

Yelp
Great food and great service! I have been waiting for a local restaurant/food cart that has Afghan food and was excited to try this place. I ordered the tikka chicken and it was fantastic.

Maddie S.

Yelp
So so delicious!! I got the Borani Banjan which comes with regular naan, and I also got garlic naan. So many things look delicious and I can't wait to come back and try more things. The eggplant was delicious and hot and cooked just right, and both naans were out of this world! So fresh and soft and crispy in all the right places. The two women who run this food cart are wonderful cooks and also such kind and wonderful people. It is a treat to get to eat their food! You've gotta try it!
google avatar

Cindy F.

Yelp
I just happened by this new food truck. It is absolutely delicious! I had the Afghan pulao. It was soo good, and I have enough left over for at least one more meal, probably two.

Adela S.

Yelp
Oh my god, I'm so happy I came across their cart. Their food is super tasty and so flavorful, you can tell they actually put their heart into it. Both sisters are super sweet and friendly. Definitely will be going back. Highly recommend this place.

Daisy W.

Yelp
Really amazing food. A bit hard to order, maybe a language issue. Have ordered chai and got it in a very small cup, other times ordered the same thing and came in a much bigger cup. Same with another appetizer dish. The order came with about 5 per order the first time, the next time came with only 1. But the food always makes up for the confusion. Order ahead.

Ml L.

Yelp
I appreciate the women that run this Authentic Afghan restaurant and have amazing service plus the food is full taste, flavors and super clean kitchen. Every time that I drive to Portland I will definitely stop by this place.

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
Delicious! We enjoyed the mantoo, afghan pulao with chicken, garlic naan, and chicken vardu. I highly recommend!
