San Diego Restaurants Serving the Best Chinese Food | Eater San Diego

"This Cantonese restaurant’s owner also operates Cui House, a fine dining operation based out of Kunming, China with establishments listed in the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide (China’s equivalent of the Michelin guidebook, launched in 2018). Menu highlights include Cantonese roast duck, crispy slow-roasted pork belly, and salted egg yolk chicken wings, but also ask about the daily specials. The team is also behind the eagerly-awaited resurrection of China Max, slated for a November opening." - Helen I. Hwang

We went here for the first time tonight on Christmas. We were easily able to make reservations this morning around 8:30 for a 5:30 sitting. So if you're going on a holiday, make sure you make the reservations. When we got there it was already kind of full because it's a very small restaurant but there were people who were waiting because they hadn't made reservations and they were on a wait list and it seemed like they were there for a while. However, we went in and we were seated within seconds. It took a while for us to order because I think they were not paying any attention to us. I don't know. However, the lady that took our order is the same lady that was trying to bust tables and be the hostess so I don't know why the others weren't doing as much as she was. We got the three combo barbecue special with Hong Kong roasted duck, Macao roasted pork and some kind of chicken. My husband was the one who wanted the chicken. I didn't like it that much. It didn't have much flavor and it was kind of dry. The duck was really good but fatty but you know it's duck so I don't blame the restaurant for that. The skin on it was really crispy. And the pork was chef's kiss. Really delicious and crispy. We also ordered the shrimp with garlic and chili which was the most amazing dish that we had while we were there and I will go back there over and over for it. The shrimp were like big prawns, not just large shrimp. And they were fried perfectly and they were tender and juicy and it was almost like a salt and pepper shrimp. I keep thinking about it even though we've been home for a few hours now. We also ordered the salt and pepper chicken and my daughter thinks that they tasted sweet but I think it tasted Smokey. I don't know it was really good but it was a much different taste than for instance if you were getting it from Royal Mandarin. And then my mother-in-law got chicken and vegetables and that was really delicious. Very tender and the vegetables were cooked perfectly. Our combo plate came out within about 2 minutes of us ordering it. So fast that we thought it wasn't even ours at first. And the other dishes came out pretty quickly except for the shrimp that took a while but we had all the other stuff to eat. Even under the Christmas pressure, the food was excellent and came out really fast. Please note: when you first get there, they put a hot tea on your table. THAT TEA IS NOT FREE! It's $2 per person and it's just charged automatically. You have to let them know you don't want it and then you have to also check your receipt because they just automatically charge it. Also prices on tonight's menu are higher than they are online so I don't know if it's for the holiday or what.

Some reviews said the service was bad. But we experienced wonderful service and hospitality. The food was great. The lobster noodles was No. 1.

Google
Fast service, extensive and authentic menu, very clean restaurant. The fresh steamed fish was absolutely stunning, tender and caught just the night before and brought to the restaurant that morning. It tasted just that fresh and three chef treated it with utmost respect as there was a very light sauce with scallions and ginger and that was all it needed. The tofu and fish hot pot was tender and delicious. The snow pea leaves were crisp and cooked just to tender. The garlic chili shrimp were very generously sized crisp from the fryer and doused super generously with red and green chilies and at least a handful of garlic. And the orange wagyu was decadent meat candy in the original Chinese style of orange beef, redolent with chili and fruit. My parents had been here once before and liked it enough to come again, as it had made a great impression on them and they were born on the Mainland.

Update review- This place is super delicious! My husband and I are fell in love with their Roasted Duck, you have to give it a try! We tried New Zealand Lamb Chops this time, the flavor is quite good, but it's a little bit too pricey. We also tried Xing Zhou Rice Noodles, this is very authentic, just like the real Cantonese taste. Overall, we will definitely come back here to eat more. Previous review- I ordered from Hungry Panda and got the food delivered to my place. I had 4 dishes and all of them are delicious. They are Roasted Duck & Pork combo, Japanese tofu with mushrooms, Stir Fry Rice Cake with pork and Sweet and Sour Pork. My favorite is the Roasted Duck, which is the best Hong Kong style roasted duck I’ve ever had in San Diego. The Roasted Pork is yummy as well, the skin is so crispy. They are super authentic. Japanese tofu is nice too, especially with the thick sauce and mushrooms. I also love the Sweet Sour Pork, this is the authentic style sweet sour pork where the American style developed from. The stir fry rice cakes taste special and unique to me but it is delicious as well. I love this place.

This was also a business-casual-friends dinner, we drove from LA down to San Diego just for the dinner. The owner/boss of the restaurant also owned one of the best and most famous Cantonese restaurants in Kunming, Yunnan, China, with the same Chinese name in San Diego. The dishes we had that night may or may not be on the menu, we had abalone (fresh, as so-called two-headed), lobster, and crab. I have to say, those dishes were good, but they can be better. We also had some normal Cantonese dishes, like chopped fresh boiled chicken, char siu (barbecued pork), grilled pigeon, pickled duck wings, pickled chicken feet, etc. Most of them were beyond average, especially the grilled dove, they were so good almost as good as the best ones in Hong Kong. I don't want to say hope the restaurant getting better and better, it's already had the persons waiting outside for seating at the very beginning first day, the day I visited. I just want to say that the hope my San Diego friends, including my daughter and her friends, can get more elegant, decent Cantonese foods from this restaurant.

Google
Absolutely fantastic experience at this Hong Kong restaurant! The flavors were authentic and delicious, transporting me straight to the streets of Hong Kong. The dim sum was fresh and flavorful, and the roasted duck was perfectly crispy. The staff were friendly and attentive, making sure our dining experience was top-notch. The ambiance was cozy yet vibrant, perfect for both casual dining and special occasions. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for a true taste of Hong Kong. Five stars all the way.

Google
Newest Cantonese/ Hong Kong style cuisine. All the traditional flavors and dishes, roast duck and pork are excellent. Crispy skins and right flavors. Prices are moderate to a little bit on the high side. Portion sizes are decent.

Google
Lobster 🦞 with noodles is a must try. You can't get anymore authentic lobster noodles anywhere else in San Diego. Bbq roasted duck and pork belly were good, but I think next time I would try cha siu(bbq pork) instead. There wasn't much meat on the roasted duck and the pork belly skin wasn't as crispy as I expected. Service was excellent. Fair price. Fantastic hot tea. Clean dining room. Will come back and try other things!

Yelp
Perfect service & ambiance. I made a reservation for four adults & one toddler on Christmas Eve. Just like most places on Convoy, the parking lot was tight but we did not have any issues finding parking (it's just a busy lot-to be expected on the Eve of Christmas). It was so quiet in there which is a nice change of pace in a restaurant. Some of our favorite dishes ordered were: honey bbq pork (seriously perfection), beef & broccoli, soft fried crab (app), orange chicken For the okay dish: house fried rice. It was light & definitely could have used 30 more seconds being fried. Overall, it was fantastic & great family style sharing portions. Nice family restaurant, we will be returning for sure!

Yelp
Go here for generous portions of flavorful food in a setting that is both casual and classy. 11/09/2024. 2-Item bbq combination platter ($21.95). Honey bbq pork: tender, juicy, sweet, and savory, 4/5 stars. Roast pork belly: was tender and juicy with that crispy skin, 5/5 stars! Fried chicken wings with salted egg ($13.95): unique in flavor as the egg yolk adds richness, but the kicker is the vigorous flavor of fried garlic, 5/5 stars! Crispy pan fried noodle ($20.95 + $10 for meats): savory and saucy with tender proteins, 4/5 stars. I wish our server would have mentioned the extra $10 charge for the meat combo. Nonetheless, they were generous on the amount of proteins. Fried rice with beef ($17.95): get this if you're a fried frice fan, as this is well-seasoned rice with salt, white & black pepper, garlic & onions, and soy sauce, 4.5/5 stars. The service is helpful and the food arrives in a moderate time. This is my new spot for elevated Chinese cuisine.

Yelp
Had a large party of 12 adults and 1 child and they were able to fit us all in one tound table. The restaurant was clean and the service was great for a family style restaurant. Overall, the food was good considering its san diego. It wont be as good as OC/LA county but its good enough. The french filet mignon was very tender and flavorful. The fried rice was delicious and had the wok flavor. Chicken wings were super juicy and crispy, great seasoning. A bit pricey but at least the portions were reasonable!

Yelp
Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday on Sunday at noon. Parking here is usually bad but when we arrived, there were plenty of spaces. The place is a typical casual setting. Food was pretty good. Fried tofu was crispy and piping hot. Chicken wings were very good. Pork belly was very tender. All other dishes we had were delicious. At the end of the meal, our server brought is cut up orange and even made sweet buns for the birthday celebrant. Our server was very good, too. He was very attentive and very patient. Will definitely come here again.

Yelp
Been craving Cantonese food and was recommended this spot so had to check them out. We came on a Saturday for lunch and nearly every table was taken. It was a REALLY hot weekend and sadly it was hot in the restaurant. There were a few fans scattered around but they didn't keep the place cool. We sat at the tables next to the partitions separating the guest tables and worker area. For some reason it smelled like sewage on and off there :( We ordered 3 dishes between two people. Service was ok. They didn't check on us once. We also ordered a bowl of rice and it never came. They kept it on the receipt when our bill came lol but they removed it when we told them. Beef Chow Fun (3.5/5): wasn't as greasy as most other places so the noodles were on the drier side. Overall it was good but I've had better Eggplant and minced meat with spicy sauce (5/5): delicious egg plant dish! Would definitely order this again. It wasn't too spicy tho. Roast pork belly (4/5): love a good crispy roast pork belly and this was good! There were a few pieces where the fat was just too much HK style roast duck (4/5): flavor was good and the meat was cooked nicely. but sadly a few pieces didn't have much meat on it. It was just the skin, bones, and a sliver of meat lol Overall food was tasty and we'd come back to try other dishes.

Yelp
This was my first time at Taste of Hong Kong. In terms of service, the staff were very friendly and polite. They could speak Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, and English (and possibly more but I didn't hear any other languages when I was there). Our food came out quickly, within ten minutes of ordering. We were a group of five. We ordered six dishes, which was the perfect amount of food. We were all satisfied and did not have any leftovers. Portions sizes were good. We ordered seafood and tofu soup, tofu and minced pork with spicy sauce, Singapore style noodles, green beans with minced pork, pork chops, and French style filet steak. The tofu was the favorite of the table. Crispy on the outside, silky and soft on the inside. I didn't think it was spicy at all but to be fair, I do have a relatively high spice tolerance. The pork chops were the second favorite of the table. They were freshly fried and also crispy; the chilis gave a good kick. I was expecting the French style filet beef to be similar to Vietnamese shaking beef (Bo luc lac) but it was seasoned very differently and tasted strongly of basil. It was still good but I personally prefer bo luc lac. The Singapore style noodles were okay, in my opinion. They tasted mostly of curry powder and did not really impress me. Overall my friends and I have a good time and enjoyed the food. If I went back again, I would definitely order the tofu and pork chops again.

Yelp
Very authentic HK food that is tasty, generous and fresh. Nothing fancy other than the white tablecloths with clear plastic covering the ceiling. Service is very good with the exception of trying hard to upset certain items and visit them at lunch with coupons. Lobster was great...chopped up in bite size pieces, lightly fried and seasoned but $150! Which is Market Priced. Loved the duck, char sui and soy chicken appetizer. Chili fish woth tofu was incredible and plentiful. I give it a "maybe" because unless you're prepared to pay premium prices, best to go elsewhere. Also, parking lot is very tight for any sized car.

Yelp
I can't believe I didn't know this place until yesterday. Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious! Salted egg chicken wings were delicious! Bi Feng Tang dungeness crab was huge, fresh and flavorful. Steamed fish was also fresh and tender. I also like Singapore rice noddle. They put quite a few pieces of big shrimps in. My family likes fresh seafood. We will definitely be back! And we would love to try some other dishes.

Yelp
It seems that few restaurants in Convoy will that reservations so a big reason why we came was bc we could book a table through Yelp Reservations. And we're so glad that we came! We had 11 people, three generations, and everyone left saying how wonderful it was. First, the food was authentic. The menu was extensive without being overwhelming. The restaurant felt new, clean, and while small, it wasn't crowded. All of the staff were very nice and helpful. They even brought us a birthday treat on the house. We look forward to going back!

Yelp

Yelp
Since moving from Chicago, it's been challenging to find good Chinese food. Chicago Chinese food just hits different. However, I recently discovered Taste of Hong Kong and decided to give it a try because of their traditional Hong Kong-style dishes. The food was great, although the portions were on the smaller side. Here's what I tried: - Salted Egg Yolk Wings. These were uniquely delicious, and I definitely encourage people to try them. - Honey Walnut Shrimp. Cooked well and very tasty. - Cantonese Style Pan Fried Noodles: These tasted great and were a highlight of the meal. The service was decently friendly, which made for a pleasant dining experience. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Food is pretty good, flavorful, the selection is decent too. Service is decent, friendly, food came out fast. But, at one point our team pot was not filled after 10 minutes. The one complaint is that it's very difficult to find parking

Yelp
I forgot to review this restaurant when I visited in January last year. My friend wanted some authentic Chinese food, so we decided to check them out. They even have some roasted ducks hanging, like I've seen only at one other eatery in SD. We ordered the Peking duck, shrimp with ginger scallion, salty fish and chicken with eggplant, beef steak with black pepper, beef chow fun, and some tea. It did take a while to get our order, but all the dishes came out in 5 minute increments. Everything was pretty good, but not amazing. I didn't like the salty fish and chicken dish at all haha. Service was pleasant, especially since we have someone in the group that speaks the language, so they were joking around with her. Complimentary orange slices were given at the end of our meal!
google avatar

Kathy N.

Yelp
We came here to celebrate my friend's birthday and were very pleased with the restaurant's hospitality. The food is better than other Chinese restaurants I've been to in SD--simple yet flavorful and delicious. We ordered BBQ pork, crispy pork, noodles in XO sauce, and two types of veggie dishes which were all delicious. After finishing our meal, my friends brought out a cake to celebrate the birthday. The owners were so kind and friendly that they joined our table for the celebration and even treated us to complimentary beer, wine and desserts. It was definitely a night to remember and we love it. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice--not overcrowded and loud like many other restaurants. Instead, it had an upscale and intimate environment. Thank you, Taste of Hong Kong. We will come back for more fun events in the future.

Yelp
A gem of place , can't believe not too many ppl frequent it but that just fine. It's really authentic Cantonese style much like what you could get in SF. Service is friendly which is a surprise and prices are very reasonable for the quality. This is not your orange chicken American Chinese food kind of a place

Yelp
Came in kinda late on a Sunday evening, and the place was still 90% full. This is a full service Cantonese restaurant, complete with hanging ducks. Our server was fast, efficient, and our food was out quickly. This place seemed to be a bit on the fancier side as two pairs of chopsticks were presented per person (one for serving, one for eating). Also complimentary tea came out without having to ask (THANK YOU!) We ordered what is probably too much food for two people, but that seems to be my M.O. at cantonese places as I can't help myself. Note that this place is NOT a fast or cheap Chinese take out - and the price reflects it. Still everything I described was just over $100, and the quality of the food exceeds that price point IMHO. We started with a hot and sour soup that had a deeper flavor than most. The combination BBQ came next, and I expected this to be good considering the hanging meat in the case, and I was right - the roast duck was absolutely delicious with tasty fat and dark meat dancing together under a blanket of skin. While not as incredible as the duck, the roasted pork belly also did not disappoint with a crispy skin atop layered fat and moist muscle. Then out came the honey walnut shrimp, which is always a show stopper in most places, but was especially delicious here, with the shrimp perfectly cooked, slightly crispy outside, and covered with just enough of the honey sauce and appropriate amounts of glazed walnuts. Next was the House Special Pepper Steak. It came with snow peas and had a pepper sauce that was very peppery (in a good way) balanced with a ginger zing and a brown sauce to tie everything together. Truly delicious. The last dish that came out (which was a strange order but seemed to work well) was the Garlic Sautéed Snow Pea Leaves in a Superior Stock. I can attest to the fact the stock used was indeed superior. Wilted leaves with still a bit of a crunch to the stalks sautéed in a fantastic sauce, it was a great vegetable dish. Next time I want to try it with the preserved eggs. The meal ended with some complimentary orange slices, which was a nice way to clear my mouth and end the meal. This is my new favorite Cantonese restaurant in San Diego. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Absolutely loved everything about this restaurant! It is clean, spacious, and bright! They offer an extensive menu that can satisfy your every craving! We ordered 1) roasted Hong Kong style duck 2) Hong Kong style crispy noodles 3) garlicky pea sprouts. Every single dish was impeccable, super tasty, and flavorful. The duck was one of the best I've ever had. The skin was crispy and the meat was moist and it was an explosion of flavor! The crispy noodles were the perfect texture and topped with fresh seafood, mushrooms, gai lan. The green pea sprouts were simple yet absolutely delicious. The staff were all helpful and kind and gave great suggestions. They have two separate private dining areas that seat 8-12 people for small family gatherings or parties. Prices were very fair considering the quality of food you are getting. Free parking in their lot!

Yelp
Truly good authentic and delicious. The staff speaks Cantonese so I know the chefs are true to the authentic Hong Kong style. Not many place also have pea pod leaves which are one of the best greens in my opinion!! Their green onion ginger sauce that normally is served with chicken is beyond fresh tasting and delicious. I had to keep asking for more dipping sauce. We got black pepper beef and it was so tender. The Singapore noodles came with shrimp and bbq pork, it was a perfect hint of spice and a big portion! This will be my go to spot! Only downfall is that the dishes are quite pricey, but so many good options on the menu it was almost so hard to decide.
google avatar

Sarina J.

Yelp
I always come here with family and their food is fantastic! My favorites are the mustard greens + mushrooms dish as well as the BBQ meat platter. They have large tables so great for a group and the parking is one of the better lots in Convoy area.

Yelp
We came around 5 pm on a Friday and it was completely empty so we were seated right away but it did get pretty full by the time we left. Service was quick and friendly. We ordered the sizzling pepper fillet steak, salt and pepper pork chop, chicken fried rice and Singapore style noodles. Everything was so delicious!! The sizzling steak was so tender and flavorful, the salt and pepper pork chop was so nice and crispy with the right amount of flavor and saltiness. The dishes were a little on the pricier side but the portions were pretty large. The only downside was they charge $6 for tea which we didn't expect cause other Chinese restaurants don't do this. Overall, super solid Cantonese restaurant and I would definitely recommend it!

Yelp
My second time coming back! Was easy to get seated on a Friday dinner around 5PM but when I left it was getting packed. We ordered chicken fried rice, Singapore noodles, salt and pepper pork chops, and sizzling beef fillet. It was all very delicious and generous portions, although on the pricey side. I also did not expect to be charged $6 for the tea (FYI). One of the best Cantonese restaurants in SD give it a try!

Yelp
My review is based on what I ordered Crispy beef noodle: 3.9/5 it was solid. Comparable to what I've had it does the job but wasn't great and there was much beef or vegetables. Honey walnut shrimp: 2.3/5 it was edible and that's the best I can give it. The flavor and freshness of the shrimp was lacking Deep fried tofu: 2.4/5 the tofu inside itself was good but the dough outside wasn't good. It's almost like a fish and chips better. The sauce they had to dip in was just soy sauce without good flavor. The staff 4.4/5: they were nice but not as attentive. In all this is probably the worst HK family style food I've had but it's edible

Yelp
Ambience here is more of like olden hk days. Customer here are mix of Ogs and american. I dove in for crispy fried noodles. That is my baseline on how good a chinese restaurant is. This by far the cleanest taste of a chinese dish I have eaten in SD. It didnt give the 1kg MSG in your tongue. I get nauseous if there is a lotnof msg. For MSG sensitive people, this is a good place to eat. I havent tried the Crispy pork belly which was hard to find in the menu. I was looking forward to eating it. Ill be back soon for that. Instead i ordered the braised pork belly. That is on a different note. Id be back here for the Fillet steak tho it is not on a sizzling plate which made me think the lady gave a wrong order. I would want to come back for another round of young chow fried rice. The bittermelon isnt giving black bean taste. I would make that at home instead! All their meat doesnt come with rice so you have to order rice. Price is hefty. Spent 150 here with tip. Since everything is almost $18 and above. It is a Chinese restaurant and you got to order everything. :))

Yelp
Came here to celebrate the mid autumn festival with some extended family. The parking lot is shared with a bunch of restaurants so parking is limited. The service was really slow and the food came a dish every 20 minutes roughly. The inside is very large and is kept relatively clean. The roasted duck was the highlight of the night. The other dishes were solid.
google avatar

Yelp
Service here was better than expected. Usually chinese spots are good food but terrible service but it was above average here. Food was authentic and flavors were all on point! Peking duck was perfectly crispy. My son loved the garlic wings so much he ate 5 of them.

Yelp
We drive past this restaurant many times as a short-cut to get to H Mart. It's tucked away in the back of a busy strip mall of Asian restaurants, so it's hard to notice from the street. Well, last week, as we were cutting through the parking lot to get to H-Mart, we decided to give this place a try for lunch. Upon entering, we found a man semi-formally dressed, tidying up the place. It was completely empty, with white tablecloths, and honestly, it looked kind of fancy in there and too quiet. The man looked up and sat us at a table. He was super friendly and told us about their specials. We chose 4 entrees; house fried rice, salt and pepper chicken wings, tofu, chicken and salted fish in a clay pot, and Kung pao chicken. They had a ton of other things on the menu, but we opted for something more familiar on our first visit. After awhile, our food came out. Everything looked so good! Except that the tofu, fish, and chicken dish came in a metal pot instead of the clay pot. But nonetheless, hubby surprisingly liked it. The chicken wings were tasty, but slightly undercooked and not as crispy as I was hoping it to be. The house fried rice was a combination of shrimp and scallops - it was delicious! Very light and tasty. As for the Kung pao chicken, hubby and I agreed it was the highlight of what we ordered that day. So much so that we decided we would definitely come back. We definitely need to try other dishes on the menu and hopefully, they cook the chicken thoroughly next time. I have to admit that for lunch, I can't say that the prices were reasonable, especially if you're looking for a quick and cheap meal. Nowadays, it seems to be the norm for sit-down places. They do have specials, the service is friendly, and they give you orange slices at the end of your meal. We will be back!

Yelp
I had a craving for some Hong Kong Cantonese food and the place hit the spot. Because a plate was delivered while we were looking at the menu, we went with the salt and pepper chicken wings. We added that to the Beef with Black Bean Sauce Chow Fun and the 2-item BBQ combo (house chicken and crispy pork belly) plus some steamed rice. The wings were crispy and juicy, with the right amount of salt and pepper and garlic. The beef chow fun was a monster order and very much a gravy style chow fun. The pork belly and house chicken were perfect protein bites. Overall, this place is a bit fancy but lunch was nice and quiet. I can see evenings being loaded, with lots of people ordering multi-course dinners.

Yelp
If you look for genuine Hong Kong Style food this is the place. The food is good but the service is not as attentive as it should be. Order after you study the menu and seek clarification from the waiter on how those dishes are fixed. Do not leave it up to the waiter to suggest what you should choose; you may be steered to the very high price items.

Yelp
This was my second visit. First time I came alone, ordering the cucumber salad and honey BBQ pork with a side of rice. I was pleased with both items, but realized I needed a companion to properly enjoy the restaurant. Happily my waiter gave me coupon for a return visit. Today I made a reservation for 2 through Yelp, received a confirmation and arrived a few minutes early. They didn't have a record of my reservation--said Yelp didn't let them know. There was a long wait list and I was about to leave, very disgruntled, but they made it right, once I showed them the e-mail I had received confirming the reservation. This time we ordered honey walnut shrimp and house chow mein. The shrimp was delicious and a very generous serving, even at $25.99. The chow mein was excellent, with thick noodles and a variety of meats, all cooked properly. I was disappointed at first when our planned meal of beef chow fun was unavailable--they had run out of the rice noodles. Our waitress suggested the chow mein as a substitute and it turned out to be excellent. Again a generous serving--we went home with enough food for another full meal. I look forward to returning someday, without a coupon, and trying the peking duck for a special occasion meal.

Yelp
2/27/24 - I went in there at noon. No one was there. My first time there. Plenty of sitting in there with large tables. Customer service was exceptional. I ordered the lunch special for the Pan Fried Noodle with seafood and a dim sum Pork Siu Mai. Both were very excellent. Lunch came with a tea. I will come here again. Very flavorful food and big portions. They also gave me a hot bowl of like rice soup at the end for free. Wonderful food and great experience. I will bring more people with me next time. Check out the photos.

Yelp
Shares a parking lot with Hive and the axe throwing place. The plaza was very crowded but in the back corner by this restaurant there was lots of parking. We ordered for take out: - young chow fried rice: this was pretty good. Rice had good texture and consistency. It was fluffy and fresh. The shrimp were a bit bland. - French style beef: not my favorite, but luckily my husband loves it. It's like a mushroom sauce. Beef was tender. Two dishes = $48

Yelp
Taste of Hong Kong : C+ or 2.5 stars, meaning "you're really hungry and want something to eat. This place won't make you foodie happy, but at least now, you're full." A lunch meal with good company, comfortable dining room, friendly service, but the food isn't good enough for a repeat. It's a sad day in San Diego. Not only did the weather suck, preventing me from riding my bike outside while still having to walk Ginsburg in the rain. But also, I have to officially take one of the few decent Chinese restaurants officially off the "revisit worthy" list. I finally had a chance to meet my financial advisor in person after working with him for almost a year. We decided on Cantonese food, so really, less than a handful of choices. I ended up choosing Taste of Hong Kong despite knowing they're somewhat inconsistent, but their dining room is more comfortable than Eastern Dynasty or Noble Chef, and I figured I could get at least a "B" meal by ordering intelligently. We arrived at 12pm, and being the first and only customers, we got the absolute warmest greeting and overall, service was very good. If only the food matched the service! Cantonese roast duck (C+ ) : My expectations - crispy skin that's not overly fatty, cooked just to the right doneness so that the meat is moist and juicy, well seasoned & marinated with a savory, meaty flavor that has a hint of sweetness in every part of the duck, including great flavor when you suck on the bones. On the plus side, the portion was very generous and the duck was cooked decently well, definitely not overcooked which is often the case. But the duck was under marinated so the flavor was lacking, and one of my biggest pet peeves, it had a previously-frozen taste. Honey walnut shrimp (B+ ) : This was the highlight of the meal. We wanted seafood, and didn't want to dirty our hands, so crabs & lobsters automatically fell out of consideration. I had the honey walnut shrimp from them a few months ago, and it was surprisingly good, so I gave it another shot and definitely didn't disappoint. The portion of shrimp was very generous, and every piece was fried nicely, hot and crunchy on the outside while still "springy" and juicy on the inside. Braised beef brisket with daikon in claypot (C ) : Where's the flavor? The dish was clearly not cooked long enough. If I needed to work out your jaws, each piece of brisket represented at least 20 high effort chews. Savory flavors from soy, oyster sauce, mixed with aromas from garlic, ginger and sweetness from star anise and daikon after being braised for hours...totally non-existent here. Imagine expecting a shot of espresso, but getting a couple tablespoons of instant decaf. Garlic stir fried snow pea leaves (B- ) : Fresh, hot, nicely stir fried, and generous portions, but quite under-seasoned. More garlic & salt would have done wonders. Maybe even go Uncle Roger style, bring on the MSG! I first tried this restaurant on Nov. 15, 2022, a few days after they opened. I was very impressed with the roasted duck / soya chicken combination plate, and in my review, I gave the chicken an "A" and the duck, a "B+." Since then, I've been back three or four times. They've definitely gone downhill - maybe changed chefs - and unfortunately, the change is not at a baby slope speed but black diamond. I really hope they can turn it around because for the size of San Diego, we need a fair share of good Chinese restaurants! ------------------------------------------- Food Grading Scale: A+: Life changing. You remember these bites for the rest of your life. Occurs very infrequently and when it does, you'll know it. You don't even know how to further improve it with a magic wand. A: Wow! Excellent. You felt happy biting into it. You're considering whether it's life changing, but know it misses the mark. A-: Very very good. Whatever it is, it's one of the best, but you can think of further improvements. B+: Very good. Very enjoyable, not to the point of "impressive," but worth revisiting. B: Good. A solid example of whatever it is, offering enjoyment, but not enough for making an effort to get. B-: Not bad. If in a pinch to eat something, this offers some enjoyment and is a reasonable option. C+: Mediocre plus. Pretty average, but with one or two positive characteristics you can identify. C: Mediocre. "Meh". Very average. Not bad enough to make you angry, but nothing good about it at all. C-: Bad. You recognize it for what it is, but a very bad rendition. Your foodie self is a little pissed, and feeling like a dummy you ordered it. D: Awful. Whoever cooked it should be ashamed of themself. Somehow, you still managed to swallow a bite. F: WTF is this? Inedible. One chew, you had to spit it out. Fire the chef.

Yelp
The best Delicious genuine Hong Kong style dishes right here in San Diego. The parking may be tight but well worth the effort.

Yelp
Well It's Time !! I had to review this Restaurant !! First it is located in a kind of small Shopping Center and it does fill up quickly so the parking is you probably know about Convoy Street Parking but during Lunch time we get lucky and we tend to always find a parking space . Well let me tell you !! This Restaurant is probably the best Chinese Restaurant I have eaten in awhile !! The food has good flavor and it tastes very delicious !! I have to say it's Very Comparable to Jasmine or Emerald on Convoy but after coming here it's at the top of my list for Best Chinese Restaurant in San Diego !! The one thing is during Dinner time it gets really busy and the workers tend to forget about you because it gets crowded and the restaurant fills up quickly !! Now we got the Sweet and Sour Pork it is on Point !! I suggest you give it a try !! Next the Snow Pea Fish is so darn good !! As for there string beans oh boy it is nice a Krispy and Bursting with the flavor of authentic Chinese food !! Cantonese Food here is authentic as it gets !! Lots of Seating inside and located really close to Mana BBQ on Convoy !! Across the Street from H- Mart . Well everything we ordered here is dam delicious and I highly recommend you try this restaurant out and see for yourself !! I surely will return and enjoy More !!!

Yelp
Came here for dinner on a Friday with a party of 6. We had made a reservation so we were seated right away. It started getting pretty crowded with a lot of people waiting for a table so I'd recommend making a reservation, especially if you have a larger party. Parking is bad, as it always is with that plaza. If you're not lucky, you might have to park in a different plaza or street and walk over. For appetizers we ordered the salted egg yolk chicken wings, black pepper steak with scallops, clams and honey walnut shrimp. Everything was very good! Honey walnut shrimp is one of my favorites and I loved the ones they served. The steak (medium rare) and scallops were cooked wonderfully. The clams were great with the black bean sauce. The salted egg yolk chicken wings were definitely a highlight. The breading with the salted egg yolk was so tasty and so addicting. I definitely recommend ordering that. For our main dishes we ordered the whole steamed fish and salted egg yolk lobster. I'm not a big fan of whole fish (too many small bones) but this one was tasty. Our party finished the whole fish. The lobster was really good, mainly because of the salted egg yolk coating. Best part was just eating that off the shells. For dessert they brought out fresh oranges, that were sweet and refreshing. They also brought out a red bean dessert on the house. Pretty good too, just very red bean-y. Overall I would recommend a try here. Yummy Chinese food, service was great, ambiance is very nice. Definitely a good spot for dinner for a whole family.

Yelp
One of the few Hong Kong restaurants in San Diego with fresh roasted duck and bbq pork! Quick service! Fast seating on a Saturday evening! Parking is terrible so pro tip: park on the street in the back near H mart. And heads up, they charge extra for tea per head count.

Yelp
I'm not sure but it seems maybe they changed ownership as the owners of Emerald have taken this place now it seems. I'm glad more HK restaurants are creeping back to SD, it shouldn't have left in the first place! I hope better dim sum spots will open up soon. Their roast duck is top notch and prob one of the best ones you can get in SD. Their pork belly was pretty good too. I also enjoyed the black bean sauce clams. I tried their BBQ char siu but the last visit was kind of disappointing, looked like leftover/overcooked. I prob should have said something but just let it slide since we had guests. I hope this was one off. They had much better BBQ char siu in the prior visits. Their lobster yee mein was good too. I think I tried their fried rice and wasn't too impressed with it, I'd stick to the noodle dishes.

Yelp
Recently had the opportunity to dine at the newly opened "Taste of Hong Kong" located in the bustling Convoy Street shopping plaza, a spot with a rich food culture, housing the likes of Manna BBQ, CoCo Ichibanya, and Hive Karaoke. Keeping in mind that it has taken up residence where the memorable "Kangxi Is Coming" once stood, our expectations were a mingle of excitement and nostalgia. We delved into the banquet menu designed for 8-10 people, and here's a rundown of our culinary journey: 1. **Fish Maw Soup**: The soup lingered at the precipice of being just right; however, it veered towards a slightly saltier profile. It was satisfactory but missed the wow factor. 2. **BBQ Combo Plate**: A mosaic of BBQ pork, roasted pork, roasted duck, and a jellyfish salad, this platter teleported our taste buds straight to the streets of Hong Kong. A special shoutout to the jellyfish salad which I found particularly delightful. 3. **French Style Steak and Mushrooms**: Unfortunately, this dish didn't make a lasting impression. It was on the blander side with an overzealous hint of black pepper. I would hesitantly recommend skipping this one. 4. **Shrimp and Snow Peas**: A stellar dish where the snow peas were perfectly tender-crisp and the shrimp were refreshingly fresh and crunchy. Definitely a must-try. 5. **Lobster and Salty Egg Yolk with Extra Noodles**: The lobster was generously enrobed in salty eggs, albeit a tad on the drier side. The noodles, however, were a letdown - lacking in flavor and overall appeal. Would not recommend the noodle accompaniment. 6. **Steam Whole Fish**: A whole trout, elegantly presented but bones intact - a word to the wise to watch for bones. The taste didn't quite hit the mark, leaning towards the bland. 7. **Salty Fish Fried Rice**: A triumph among the dishes, with distinct grains and a flavor that had us reaching for more. The fried rice was an utter standout. 8. **Abalone with Spinach**: A decent offering with medium-sized abalone that was enjoyable but didn't eclipse the other flavors of the night. To round off the feast, we anticipated the Mochi dessert but were informed by the service team that they were too swamped to serve it. Instead, we were provided with a Taro dessert which, regrettably, did not resonate with our palate. In essence, "Taste of Hong Kong" is a bit of a mixed bag - some hits, some misses - but it retains potential. For aficionados of genuine Hong Kong cuisine, this place can handle the craving, specifically with their BBQ combo plate and salty fish fried rice. Navigate the menu with our experiences in mind, and you're sure to find a dish worth returning for.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of showing my family to Taste of Hong Kong, and as they are born and raised in HK, their palates were the true test of the validity of the food served here! Unfortunately the service was subpar this time around, with the server getting our order incorrect, and the kitchen not delivering on the flavor as much as our first visit. Still, my parents enjoyed it decently, but it definitely didn't blow their minds away with the mistakes that occurred. Hopefully just an off day!

Yelp
This place is super delicious!

Yelp
The dishes are a hit or miss. The service overall was very good and dishes came out quick enough. However, 2 dishes out of 4 we ordered were really under seasoned - the intestines and fish fillet. The fish fillet was tender but even my dad who eats reduced sodium everything asked if there was any salt. The soy sauce chicken and house peppered beef were both perfectly seasoned and cooked. So it seems like there are some inconsistencies but do have some good dishes. May be worth another shot.

Yelp
If only Yelp had 1/2 stars. I'd place this around 3.5 The honey bbq pork we had was soo dry and tough. The garlic stir fried string beans were pretty good. The beef chow fun was okay. Not bad but not great. We received complimentary oranges at the end. I found the entire meal kinda underwhelming which surprised me because of the other reviews. Maybe we'll give it another try some other time.

Yelp
The food was delicious. We had the Fried Lobster and it was soooo good. The sweet and sour pork was very tender and tasty. We also had the pepper salt shrimp...yummy! It is our favorite restaurant in the San Diego area.

Yelp
Absolutely excellent Cantonese food. I wish I had remembered to take photographs. I've been three times, and every time each dish hit the mark. The hot and sour soup has an earthiness to it and definitely a bit of spice. Another favorite dish is the beef with pepper and ginger. Even honey walnut shrimp, not usually one of my favorites, was excellent here - the shrimp were crispy and very lightly battered, and the sweet sauce was lightly applied and not too laden with mayonnaise, Pea leaves with garlic were a delightful choice for greens. Portions are ample and pricing is reasonable. Extra points for customer service. I originally made a reservation for a Saturday night dinner. When I called to confirm, the restaurant said they did not see my reservation and further, they were fully booked that night and could not accommodate my party. I was disappointed, but I understand that mistakes happen. On the Saturday in question, the restaurant called to tell me that they'd had a cancellation, and now could accommodate my party. I very much appreciate that the restaurant clearly did not like disappointing me, and must have made a note to call me if an opening occurred. I'm glad they did - we had a most excellent meal!
