London’s Best South Indian Restaurants Serve Kerala and Hyderabadi Food | Eater London

"East Ham’s South Indian cafés are generally modest places with unremarkable interiors, but this vegetarian branch of an international chain is relatively smart and well-organised, with clued-up service by staff constantly kept on their toes by throngs of families who crowd the place. Dosas are a strong point, with soft, spongy sunflower-yellow ‘set dosa’ — which here come in a set of two — getting their vivid hue from a combination of chana dal, toor dal, and turmeric powder. This modern classic from Karnataka is served with vada curry made from coarsely crushed lentil fritters enveloped in masses of sliced onions, fennel seeds, and curry leaves. There are ‘5 taste’ dosa for the indecisive — five small pancakes with toppings ranging from green chillies to grated carrots — and squashy mini-muffin like paniyaram available on weekend evenings, if they haven’t sold out already." - Sejal Sukhadwala

The food is consistently excellent with rich flavours that never disappoint (the Dosas especially), and the service is always warm and attentive. A spot I’ll happily return to again and again

Google
An excellent place to go for pure vegetarian, authentic South and North Indian dishes. Service provided despite the heavy rush of a Sunay lunch time was impressive. Mr Sadiq and Mr raj were exceptionally helpful. All food ordered by us were very tasty. A bit less oil in the Chole would have been better. The Bathura was HUGE! Even the youngsters in out group could not finish it fully! Perhaps the manahgement can think in terms of ereducung the size a bit?

Absolutely amazing place, always come here with my family and we only have good things to say about this place. The food is clean and tastes amazing. The service here is also good. We ordered food for 5 individuals for only £49, so its definitely worth coming here.

I’ve been a regular customer here for 2 years, and it’s always a wonderful experience. The food is authentic and delicious, and the atmosphere is perfect for enjoying Indian cuisine. A special mention for RANA – he is so helpful, polite, and kind. His service truly makes the dining experience even better. Thank you, RANA, for your hospitality! 😍

Yelp
Food 5/5 Service 5/5 Ambiance 5/5 We ordered Ghee Masala Dosa, Mysore Dosa , Masala Tea & Chocolate Milk Shake for kid. We had quite a heavy lunch already in the form of fish & chips. Price wise it was good. Taste wise it was very good. It was authentic taste not like that for the sake of serving spicy Indian food.

Yelp
Really nice food, of course in East Ham the food is definitely not anglicised when it comes to spicing. Not the friendliest service, but that's not really the point of this place.

Yelp
It was a Sunday and a quick late lunch was in order. I had about 1 hour to get in and out. But the service was truly appalling. Now, I am not lambasting the restaurant as a whole but the speed of service is just tortoise-like. It took 15 mins to take the order and the last item ordered was served only after we asked specifically for it. The food is good though - and the 2 stars are for the quality of the food alone. The Mysore dosas are really good here. But I doubt I'll be back. It must be hard competing against an established chain of restaurants like Saravanaa. Unfortunately I doubt they'll be very popular with poor service. But once again, let me convey the fact that I felt the food was quite good.

Yelp
Does exactly what it says on the tin! This isn't another restaurant pretending to serve Indian food and serving the British take on it. It serves real Indian food. You won't find a Korma or a biryani on the menu but you will find amazingly tasty, authentic, vegetarian, Indian food. Also don't expect a knife and fork...eat with your hands, bread and a spoon! It's really busy but take that as a good sign, especially as it was about 95% Indian customers. It's a large restaurant though with lots of staff so no delays in service. The customer service isn't great, there aren't any pleasantries and not many smiles from the staff but the food definitely makes up for it. Plus it's really cheap! We had three of the gravies (one paneer, one kofta and one chickpeas) dishes with a couple of naans and a mango lassi each. The lassi was a little too sweet, but refreshing none the less. The curries were delicious and full of flavour and the naans were large and really fresh. We were really full by the end and it only came to £22 between us! We'll definitely go again and try some of the Tiffin or smaller dishes to work out way through the menu!

Yelp
Went on a sunday, so the place was PACKED. Ordered mango lassi as a trip to an indian restaurant is incomplete without it. Tasted the samosa and spring rolls which were tasty. However, my favourite starter was what I thought was paneer when tasted but turned out to be cauliflower. I sadly don't know its name as my brother ordered it. Had the masala dosa and chole bhature which were piping hot when it arrived. The taste was good and it was spicy to our liking. The price we paid shocked me as I was expecting a lot more. So I left a very happy customer. Will surely visit soon. Oh and its completely vegetarian!

Yelp
One of the best Indian restaurants in London or the US that I have been too. We ordered Ghee roast, idiyappam with Kuruma, Podi Dosa, Onion Rava and Mini idlis and everything tasted just like in India, true to the restaurants name. And the food is cheap too. 4 people ate well and the bill came to 50 pounds.

Yelp
Taste of India is just as the name suggests. The food isn't amazing. But they do server proper Indian food. When we used to be a regular at Saravanaa Bhavan, we never even gave a look at this one. But now that we have stopped going to Saravanaa Bhavan following one of those bad incidents, we have started looking at alternatives. This is very much like Saravanaa Bhavan in the cuisine. Mostly South Indian and Pure Vegetarian. Most dishes are served in steel plates as they are supposed to be in South India. But the filter coffee here isn't as good or even close to what we get in Saravanaa Bhavan. I am comparing Saravanaa Bhavan here because, these restaurants are pretty much next to each other in East Ham. But we were pleased with the service. Waiters are excellent, they are friendly and take special care of each table. I don't recall having any alcohol choices there, but there are a lot of Indian juices and ice creams available. If you feel like having some pure vegetarian then this is definitely a good choice.

Yelp
Unlike so many restaurants named 'Taste of India', this place serves up real Indian food. Forget 'Korma', 'Jalfrezi' or any of the made-up 'Anglo-Indian' cream laden, over-sauced, suspiciously bright coloured stuff some think of as Indian food. Taste of India serves up food of a quality and type which sustains around a sixth of the world's population, predominantly vegetarian and served up with a variety of breads and accompaniments. From the highly flavoured, savoury and spicy South Indian Dosa to the robust and rich Northern Indian/Punjabi thali, Taste of India has the vast variety and richness of Indian food covered. If it isn't on the menu but you want it, they'll probably cook it. This is food made by knowledgeable people. We were warmly greeted and quickly seated. Our drinks order was rapidly taken and delivered we opted for the salted limed soda and a bottle of sparkling water. Our food order was also efficiently handled. A trip to the loo confirmed that the crispness we saw front of house carried through, they were clean and well stocked with soap, papers and efficient hand-dryers. Access to the restuarant (and loos) was all on the level so it seems disabled access has been thought through and accomodated in the overall plan. There was a general air of a busy, well managed and happy business. Our fellow customers ranged from sturdy Sikh builders to rangy Muslim students and numerous Hindu technicians and IT managers from Chennai, Banagalore and Kerala. There were many happy families tucking in. Everyone had a happy and satisfied air about them. Our starters arrived quickly and with the sizzle of having been freshly made still about them. Paneer fingers (milk curd, covered in a spiced gram flour batter, and flash fried) had a sweetness and spiciness to them which achieved a delicate balance. Medhu Vada (steamed spiced lentil and rice flour dumplings) were offered up with coconut chutney and sambhar (a highly spiced lentil soup, with tamarind and chilli) and were savoury, spicy, soft and yielding and just delicious . . . creamy and tangy coconut chutney and spicy sambhar complemented them perfectly. Our main course was potato paratha with a mild veg curry and raita, aubergine bharta and mutter paneer. Each dish had a distinct set of flavours. The mutter paneer combined the sweetness of fresh peas with the sharp tang of garlic, ginger and fresh coriander grounded with brown spices like cumin, cinammon and cloves. The bharta had the smoky, sweet flavour of roasted aubergine cut through with fresh green chilli. The bill didn't hurt either, coming in at under £30 for everything. From start to finish, Taste of India lived up to it's promise.

Yelp
Place was amazing. I went with a group of my friends for our second to last night in London and we were so impressed with the amazing food and amazing service. Well done! Wish we could take it back to America with us.

Yelp
What can I say, I'm a fan of south indian food. This is a very good dosa restaurant. I used to frequent a more popular place but I found that the dosa here is rather good, especially the coconut chutney. I think they made a fresh batch every day, I can taste it. The other items are really good as well, like idli and puttu. Strong tea, sweet. good good.

Yelp
Great South Indian food - the idlis and dosas are a must try. The juices are great as well. Beware of the long queues on weekends!

Yelp
Amazing food - order a South Indian plate and you get a taste of lots of different items. The rotis for kids are huge and excellent value. The lime soda and lassies are really good and the staff friendly. It's a busy place quite rightly so as the food is great as are the prices,

Yelp
horrible service.. went as a family.. waited for 30 mins to get the menu ! and another 45 mins to get the starters.. after nearly two hours, we decided to skip the main course and left.. they even lied to us saying that we turned away the food (that never came !).. I am not really convinced if it is a genuine restaurant.. wouldn't go there again.. particularly, when you have a decent joint across the road, Saravana Bhavan
