Every Houston Restaurant Marcus Samuelsson Visits on ‘No Passport Required’ | Eater Houston

"In Houston’s Galleria neighborhood, Taste of Nigeria owners Oye and Tiffaney Odewale wanted to create a restaurant that served the city’s entire West African community, not just Nigeria-born Nigerians, as well as people who are interested about learning more about West African cuisine. Employees come from across West Africa, not just Nigeria, and the influences show on the menu. Samuelsson learns to make ceebu jen (stewed fish served with rice and vegetables) and enjoys a catfish pepper soup." - Sonia Chopra

Taste of Nigeria Serves Up a Ton of Tribal Cuisine Near the Galleria - Eater Houston

"A brand new restaurant Taste of Nigeria just debuted a lengthy menu of Nigerian eats near the Galleria. The new eatery, located at 5959 Richmond Avenue, is from Ayo and Tiffaney Odewale, the husband-and-wife team behind Cafe Abuja. “We opened Taste of Nigeria based on demand in the Galleria area; there’s a decent population of Nigerians here,” Tiffaney tells Eater. The new spinoff is larger and has a more upscale feel than its predecessor. Diners will find seating for about 50, wood-clad walls, punched copper pendant lights, and a bar (unlike at Cafe Abuja)." - Alaena Hostetter

Google
Taste of Nigeria let’s talk about it. First off I usually Uber eats this place and only been here physically one other time. But TONIGHT hands down was one of the best experiences I’ve had at a restaurant. Honey? Period, her name is like “Oyinda” excuse me if I pronounced it wrong. But she told me it means honey. SHE was the sweetest and very kind and patient with us. She was very reassuring and the customer service was THERE okay. And not to mention the second young lady that assisted Esther! I just want to take the time out to give them their flowers the way the helped and assisted other guests too. The food was amazing and fresh, plentiful and all the right spices from the motherland. Down to the puff puffs hot and ready. Thanks so much Taste of Nigeria for a 5 star experience I will be back!

The EGUSI SOUP was SCORCHED/BURNT, I asked for the manager and he was gone already. I asked the waiter to taste it in the back. He said she could due to fasting. I asked the other guy to taste it the cook. He asked the cook and he said it's fine. The waiter said he can get us a different soup..so we got another AFANG SOUP but instead of like it was spicy . We kept it due to time constraints. Me and my wife could smell the burnt smell off of the EGUSI SOUP. The chicken that I had was good and the pounder yam was also good. The only issue was the cook not acknowledging that they did prepare that EGUSI correctly. The Puff puffs where good and the fish patty was VERY DELICIOUS.

Google
I ordered their stewed meat through uber eats for $19 and look at the quantity! For $19?! This is a joke! The rice side was $10 for that teeny quantity? Not ordering from here again. I spent together $37 including taxes and that $19 alone could’ve gotten me a full meal from McDonald’s but instead I receive this tiny portion. I’m pissed!

Google
The food was excellent, the service was really good, and I loved the look and feel of the restaurant. The meat pie was superb, it reminds me of Mr Biggs meat pie, definitely a 10/10.

Google
While I appreciate supporting local businesses, this is not a place I would choose to visit again, though I might consider ordering takeout. With only three tables seated in the restaurant, it still took 1 hour and 7 minutes for my fish meal to be ready. Additionally, my drink order was incorrect and took another 6 minutes to be fixed. While the food was undeniably delicious, the service left much to be desired. Waiting over an hour for a takeout order is simply unacceptable.

Google
Don’t even bother wasting your time here. The service was terrible we went 5pm on a Friday and they were out of everything. Even the bar had no alcohol. They gave us a shot and watered it down. When we asked for another they said they were out. Waitress was not very good either. We were the only ones there and had to go up to the bar to check in on our order multiple times. Got the got stew and it was all skin no meat. Had to send it back. Waste of time. 175$ for two people

Google
No the quality went down... I had it twice and it was good but this last time from Uber eats was so disappointing. First off I ordered the fried rice plate the fried rice its self was bland the plantains was good.White rice was mushy... there was barley any stew (they forgot the stew for the stew and rice..... so i had to use the little stew that came with the assorted meats) A WASTE OF $41 BASICALLY. I called them to express everything I typed and the girl was saying "come in and talk to the boss" girl..... Update: Spoke to the manager Mr. Ayo (I-O) i'm assuming that's how it's spelled but anyways he was sincere and he told me anytime I come he'll take care of me. Accidents happen but I don't know i'm still keeping my initial review up.

Google
Was referred here after a night out and I’m glad I was….although I thought the rice tasted a little off (my friend thought it tasted a lil burnt) the beef and greens were good. I’d try it again

Yelp
I ordered my usual when coming here n loved it again. The Jollof Rice with Spicy Stewed Chicken, Spinach and Plantains were all very delicious and different from one another in every way, but all so good separate and together. The chicken drumsticks were really tasty, spicy, aromatic and really tender in every bite. Great skin on them and soaked up in that wonderful, zesty red sauce. The rice was very tasty, smoky in flavor and moist, but not too greasy either. The spinach was very juicy, very tasty and spiced well too. The plantains were also very tasty with a bit of a dessert vibe to them, along with being very soft, slightly chewy and sweet in a natural fashion. Each item in the meal complimented the other one so perfectly. Great service again on this visit.

Yelp
Amazing food, location is very clean and organized. Also got some small chops to go! This was worth my 37 min drive. Thank you again.

Yelp
I am very happy with my order. It is really hard to find good West African food. I normally will cook it myself but sometimes it is good to go out and enjoy it being cooked for you. My order was ready for pick up when I arrived and I was already prepared for potential disappointment due to going many places in many states that do not prepare and season the food, or cook the meat tender enough - likely because most Americans will not know how the food traditionally tastes so it is easy to skimp. THIS place, however, got it right. I ordered egusi soup with goat and fufu and the meat and soup was very flavorful. I enjoyed every bite and I am sure I will go one more time before I leave Houston so that I can enjoy a good traditional Nigerian meal before I have to go back to cooking it for myself. My experience was wonderful. I recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Unfortunately, the experience here was just okay. My friend and I ordered the Egusi with chicken, fufu, and plantain with stew. The plantains were sweet but I wish the outside was crispier- they were all very soft. As for the stew, it tasted great and paired well with the plantains I wish I had asked the waiter for his recommendations because my friend and I could not eat more than a couple bites of the Egusi. I only had Nigerian food a couple of times but this was the first time trying egusi and the taste of smoked fish was too strong for my friend and I. We usually love fish/fish-based dishes and I personally don't know what Egusi is supposed to taste like but if you don't come from a Nigerian background and you don't particularly enjoy strong smells/taste of fish, then I would order something else. Not to mention, it had a little bit of a bitter aftertaste that my friend and so didn't particularly enjoy. However, the fufu that came with the egusi tasted great (my friend and I just dipped the fufu in the red stew instead of the egusi). As for the chicken, I was a little confused at first because I thought it would be in the Egusi but it actually came as a side dish in the same stew that went with the plantains. The chicken was fried well- crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Overall, the service was good and the interior was spacious but the Egusi just really threw us off. Not to mention, the meal is more on the pricey side (Egusi- $18.99, Fufu - $2.75, and Platain - $10) If I were to visit again, I hope to try the Jollof Rice and fish.

Yelp
Came on Saturday night and there was plenty of seating (mix of table seating, high tops, and a bar). The restaurant is trendy and clean inside, and dress is casual. Located in a plaza with a shared parking lot. Service was fantastic and our waiter was wonderful, offering us many recommendations. We wanted to try a lot so we ordered a few things which was more than we could finish. Appetizers: The chicken pie was good, big, and enough to split among two people. It was my first time trying a Scotch egg but I enjoyed it. Puff puffs are two dense and giant fried dough balls that were delicious and filling... don't recommend ordering before dinner because they are filling. Entree: I got the Egusi soup with chicken and fufu. The soup was a thick, ground nutty consistency with cooked green leaves in it, served with two chicken drumsticks in a tomato-like sauce in a separate bowl. Fufu comes wrapped and hot. I enjoyed the taste of the soup however I could not get past the smell. It had an extremely pungent odor and because it was my first time trying this, I don't know if this is normal. The chicken was great though, fell off the bone and the sauce delicious. The portion of fufu was giant. This dish on its own was a lot of food. I also tried a little bit of the Jollof rice with beef and plantains which was delicious. This was a lot of food that would be very filling on its own. Overall, I'd recommend and would come back again next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Started with puff puff, chicken pie and a scotch egg. All were good. The puff puffs were slightly sweet but not over powering. I had the jollof rice with beef. It was a bit spicy and smokey. I really liked it

Yelp
Food was delicious no complaints never had pounded yam was soooooo delicious especially the fish it was great spice. Had a real Coca-Cola is what my husband call it .Customer service was phenomenal we will go back once we visit Houston again. It was so nice and clean in there the music the area was easy to spot the restaurant.

Damien H.

Yelp
Waited 40 minutes before they told me they didn't have goat for my order but that the rest of my order will be ready in five minutes. Three other people left while I was waiting. And it was dirty in there.

Yelp
This was my first experience trying Nigerian food. I was told by many people to visit here. The place is located in a strip mall close to Richmond. When we arrive there was available parking. Since the place is next to a bar I assume later in the night the parking is a little more hectic. When you walk ing the ambiance is very nice, you have your high table seating and low table. There is a bar but when we came they did not have a bartender so we were not able to order mix drink. You were only able to order wine by the bottle at the time. The meat pie was one of the items we wanted to try, when we got there they were not ready, I think we got there when they just opened so the meat pies were not ready. I order the Egusi with the pounded yam and chose chicken as my protein and a side of plantains. When the waitress came out she gives you a bowl to was your hands, since you are eating with your hands. The meat pies came out I had beef. Very flavorful nicely seasoned and the crust was light and not thick. I would definitely order that again. Next the main course came out and I was excited. The The pound yam with the Egusi and the chicken delicious!! It had a little kick but not as spicy and I know they can make it. They give you a lot of food, needless to say I was not able to eat it all. I will be back and try the other soups.

Yelp
This is a very honest review, I will hope for this restaurant to do better. I have never been so disappointed in the taste of Nigerian food before but my experience here is worse than 1 star. I ordered the abacha with fish, the oil tasted so stale the entire food ended up in the trash. it wasn't garnished with garden eggs, ugba nothing. It is truly the worst abacha I have ever eaten in my life.

Yelp
Haven't been to Taste of Nigeria in almost 1 year, and had to take another visit tonight. The whole establishment was a vibe the decor was on point, the gold just made everything pop. The food is kind of expensive but worth it The service was great and the food came out one by one, in a timely manner. We got the rice and stew with goat meat, and oxtails, suya and meat pie. The rice and stew was very good, as well as the goat meat and oxtails , no complaints here. I do believe the stew could have been a bit more spicy but that's alright. The meat pie was on point, I wasn't really a fan of the suya, but am sure that's just my taste. I would definitely be back to chop the Isiewu and the Nkwobi!!! Y'all should definitely check this place out if you like Nigerian food !!
google avatar

Greg W.

Yelp
So am not sure if my review will do it justice. This was my first Nigerian food experience. I have no way to compare it to what it should be like. I can say I ordered a bunch. I will list each dish in order of favorite to worst. -Suya app of chicken kabobs. This was yummy and came with the spicy rice. This was good. -jollof with chicken was also very good and enjoyable. -ugusi with goat was ok. Apparently the chunks of goat are meant to be mostly fat and small amount of meat. At least that was how ours was. The sauce was good and the ugusi does have a slight smell. It was enjoyable all the same -ogbono was a bit rough for us. The lady warned os that it is a slimmy dish. The slimness did not bother me but the flavor was not something I was use too or enjoyed. It might have been the perfect ogbono but not for me. - "beer" is really a cider. Once you know it's a cider I was ok with it -Nkulenu's Palm Drink was a bit rough for us too. I could not drink this. Definitely an acquired taste. So never having Nigerian food before I have nothing to gauge this place against. I can tell you it was packed with young and old. So I assume it's spot on. I also expected some serious heat that never was there.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite Nigerian Restaurant! It was my first time visiting but I was impressed in comparison to other Nigerian restaurants scattered around Houston. The same food served here is served at Jollof Rice King and Cafe Abuja. FOOD Pounded yam - 5/5 Egusi with oxtails - 5/5 Beef Suya - 2/5 Jollof Rice - 5/5 Beef Pepper Soup - 5/5 The pounded yam with egusi and oxtails was like heaven. I absolutely loveeee oxtails so it makes this dish extra special for me. The oxtails were tender and juicy. And the egusi was super flavorful. What was also great about this dish was it was hot in temperature. The beef pepper soup was hot, yummy, and spicy! Very spicy. There is an option for non-spicy but you need to specify that to the waiter. All the beef cuts were tender. As for the beef suya, it wasn't all that. And I'm very picky about suya being that I'm of Nigerian descent and had REAL suya in Nigeria. The jollof rice served along with it was yummy. AMBIANCE There is one TV by the bar but nothing was being played. They also play Nigerian music in the background. I noticed they have a lot of pickup orders constantly coming in and don't much people dining in. If they could add some live music or a DJ and find more creative ways to make more customers dine in, this restaurant should stay busy and make me come back often. Maybe add an additional TV that plays live sports. Or get a bartender and offer cocktails.
google avatar

Samantha J.

Yelp
Finally Nigerian food without a 45 minute wait. I ordered one Sunday after Church and I'm so happy that 15 minutes really means exactly that. Their ogbono was yummy (but a bit on the spicy side) and made several meals for myself and my daughter... with the help of extra fufu per my request.
google avatar

Chi A.

Yelp
I find it really hard to believe that the same person who makes the jollof rice at Jollof King, also makes the food at Taste of Nigeria. There's absolutely no way or maybe we just went on an off day but the dining experience was not good. My cousin got the grilled fish but instead, they gave him fried and when it was swapped out, the grilled fish looked like it was boiled and also took so long to come out. I got the jollof and it wasn't good. Especially not compared to Jollof King. I'll try them again to see but eh.
google avatar

Brynea M.

Yelp
My first time experiencing it was really good. My second experience recently wasn't good at all. My sister and I went on a Friday night around 7 pm. They were unattentive, were "out of all meats" like goat, oxtails, only had chicken left from what the guy told us from the kitchen. Took them a long time to get the food out. There wasn't enough stew on the chicken with my order. The chicken looked & taste old it wasn't fresh. I don't who was running operation that night, but when a family of 4 came and dine in next to us and was inquiring about the meats available. The same guy who took our order said to them that they had oxtails available to serve. I felt that was an inconvenient for us because we really wanted to try their other meats. I won't be coming back based on my second experience! That wasn't right.

Yelp
Houston is one of the cities that a lot of Nigerians migrate to so I knew I would be able to find authentic Nigerian food here and had to try it. I called up my Houston fam and we went Saturday afternoon. We arrived at 345 sharp so we could be in the door by 4 when they opened. They opened promptly at 4 and the music was a vibe but a bit loud. You seat yourself and there is a good amount of seating. The bathroom was clean but there were no paper towels. After about 20 mins, Didi came and took our orders. After we asked him some questions on the menu we realized we needed a couple of more minutes to finalize our order so we asked him to come back. Well about 20 mins later he finally returned. I went for the Garri swallow called Eba with Efo Riro and assortment of meat which was $18.99. If you get a swallow dish the price is based off the meat you order. Unfortunately while waiting for our food the waiter told me the Efo Riro they made was for a catered party. I was annoyed but he suggested the Afang soup in substitution so I went with itZ Once we finally got our food everything was delish! You get sooooo much food. I was able to try my aunt and cousins stews also which was bitter leaves, oha soup, and pepper soup. All amazing. I was disappointed that they didn't have a smaller order or plantains nor did they carry chin chin but asides that it was delicious experience. My suggestion is to hire more staff or adjust your hours based off what your staff availability is. You may lose customers due to extremely slow or lack of service. Also check with the kitchen thoroughly of what is available so you can let your customers know.
google avatar

KD S.

Yelp
Okay so I'd say that the 3 Star rating is warranted. The food is good overall; however, the cost is very inflated given the amount of food you actually get per order. Customer service was fine and the restaurant itself is very nice inside with a very nice vibe. I'm not sure I would go here often just to eat though.
google avatar

Fatou M.

Yelp
Worst experience ever I don't think I'll go back there, made me wait for an hour for my food came with no sauce then wait for another 30+ mins for the sauce, I usually tip people but I didn't this time.
google avatar

Yelp
My server was Leslie. Awesome service and sweet smile. Definitely ask for her if you come in. Knowledgeable about the menu and is very patient. The attitudes in here was great. I got a smile from everyone. Immediately when you come in, there is a sign that says to seat yourself. Within minutes of seating, I was greeted warmly and handed a menu. The vibes of this place were immaculate. Definitely chill and warm. They had a nice bar area and everyone was vibing to the music. I was open to trying something new so I got the Afang soup, meat pie, and scotch egg. the meat pie was seasoned well but different. I wasn't the biggest fan of the texture but it was still flavorful. Scotch egg was different as well but I liked it. Was not disappointed in the Afang. A water bowl was brought to me and I went to work. Goat was very tender, spicy. Large portions. Pounded yam wasn't gummy. I will definitely be back. Disclaimer: I've eaten many foods from Nigerian, Ghanaian, & Liberian restaurants. However, I am American.
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Came here for an early dinner on a Thursday evening, I didn't have any wait but there isn't a ton of seating inside. This was my first experience having Nigerian food and had a tough time deciding whether I wanted to try one of the soups or one of the jollof rice dishes. After hearing a few recommendations from my server I decided to go for the Asun rice dish since I was in the mood for something spicy. The dish was very well seasoned and tender goat along with sweet plantains and jollof rice. It was all around an absolutely fantastic meal. Super flavorful and outside of the plantains unlike any other dish I've had before. If I lived in the area I'd come back often to try several more of their dishes since so much on the menu sounded interesting. Can't recommend them enough if you're looking to try a new cuisine.
google avatar

Yelp
If you are looking for the best tasting and authentic Nigerian food experience, this is the place!

Yelp
Food was ok. overpriced paid $6 dollars for water. Wouldn't recommend. They charged us more than what we got.

Yelp
I would like to start off by saying this was my first time trying Nigerian food so maybe this cuisine just isn't for me, but doing the math a 1 star review will lower their rating by about 0.05 stars, so I don't think this negative review will have too much of an impact. This was primarily written to warn those who've never tried it before. Ewedu: Bland, kind of like liquid spinach with a little bit of an unpleasant pennywort taste. Egusi: Not bland, more just gross. Hard to describe, especially since I only had a couple bites and that was an hour or two ago, but I don't want to take another to better describe it. Swallow: It's pretty much just dough from a taste and texture perspective. This one especially seems obviously just not up my alley, since looking it up this is how it's supposed to be, and many people love it. Maybe these dishes taste exactly like they're supposed to, and I don't doubt that that's true, but be warned: if you've never tried Nigerian food and you're really hungry don't go here just in case. Save it for a day when you really want to try something quite unlike anything you've had before and you have food at the house or could go without eating. All in all I guess I'm glad I tried something new, not everything is for everyone. Although the food was quite unappealing to me, it's definitely worth trying out for yourself to see what you think.

Yelp
Disappointing experience. As a Nigerian I'm almost embarrassed that this is called a Nigerian restaurant. Okra soup tasted like someone mixed it with tap water . Beef was over cooked. My friend sent his fried rice back as soon as it came out-- he could tell it wasn't right. The chef makes things strange. All of this after ordering THREE DIFFERENT options at first, all for them to come back and now tell us they don't have it in. We went back and forth like this for almost an hour because they had nothing we wanted. We will not be returning.

Oreoluwa O.

Yelp
I wish I could leave 0 stars. First as soon as we walked it, they were laughing and giggling and just staring. I was so confused was like okay. Then the food came, it wasn't hot fr, you could tell it's been sitting, granted we came an hour before closing i let it slide. But the fish was salty asl, the jollof rice was Not that good. I was so disappointed but still somewhat edible but the laughing nd giggling and looking over to me and my friend was giving vibes of they put something in my food so i was very much good off that. The meat had no taste, highly disappointing food especially to call yourself a nigerian cuisine. For context, i was born nd lived in Nigeria nd i just know wat good authentic nigerian food taste like. But it was really their attitude, giving insecure asf nd bitter hoes. DO NOT RECOMMEND

Houston W.

Yelp
Warning - DONOT EAT HERE!!!! Came to taste of nigeria for the second time, from my bad experience 1 year ago. The food was terrible. If you are A true nigeria do not eat hear. The egusi still after recommending to the owner from cafe Abuja to change the chef , he still got a worse one. Please go else where or maybe find someone who cooks from there house and sales soup. Also the fact the charged me additional .75 for rubbery pound yam is obscured. Be warned.

Erica W.

Yelp
great service my food was hot and fresh it wasn't a long wait at all great environment and they have some reasonable prices on their food

Yelp
First time here. Place was nice and clean. Service was okay. Food: I wanted to order the groundernut soup but I was told they did not have any. Mind you the place had just opened for service. So I guess they were not stocked for it. I ordered the Goat with 2 soups. I did half Egusi and Okra that the waitress recommended. I did not enjoy the okra at all. The Egusi was okay. They both lacked flavor. The goat was good. I ate my yam with the sauce that was poured on the goat.

Yelp
Okay, so I was hoping for better. The esthetics: the esthetics of the restaurant is great! Very nice restaurant with plenty of varied seating. You can tell the paint is fresh because it still lingered a bit but it did t bother me. The service: the service was actually good compared to most Nigerian restaurants! We walked in and were greeted promptly and handed menus. They ran out of goat and the waitress told us right away and apologized. You still need to make eye contact to get their attention but this is way better then the usual cold shoulder mug and eye rolls I get at other places. The food: okay so this is all that matters. We started off with a fish meat pie and suya for appetizers. Both were delicious and came out promptly. Malt and Fanta came in a glass bottle which I always love ! Taste better that way. So for the main course we ordered egusi and ogbono soup( you are allowed 2 soups with one swallow which I love) My swallow was fufu and my fiancé's was amala Well the presentation of the food was good. Even had the bowl to wash our hands ! Great touch BUT The egusi was not it like at all! I was so shocked because that's what I came there for. It was lacking in taste and had seasonings that wasn't used in traditional egusi. The ogbono soup was wayyyyyy better , it wasn't like how I grew up eating it but the flavors were almost identical ALMOST but not quite, and a little more salt would have done better for me. Now they ran out of got so I asked for beef. I don't know what they seasoned it with curry or something but I literally took a bite and was like wtf is this . The seasoning was off like all the way off and was not appetizing at all. So there the meat stayed. I will go back and try other things but unless they change the egusi and meat seasoning I will not be ordering that any time in the future. All in all 3.4/5 experience

Yelp
This restaurant is very authentic and honestly the food is good. I am leaving the low review due to the price point compared to the amount of food you receive. I order a side of jollof rice... came out to $16 American dollars with no protein.. so I was under the impression that it was going to be a significant amount of rice due to the price. Upon my food being ready I checked the bag and was literally flabbergasted at the size of the side of rice. It is such a small portion, if you could imagine a small bowl of soup to go is basically what size the rice came in. I went about a week - week and a half ago and I just can't let it go. I am Nigerian myself and as many places as I've been to/ tried.. this is quite ridiculous like I said very good rice but not worth it at all. Inflation is not that high for the price point to be that high without even having protein. Please do better Nija!

Yelp
My sister came to Houston for a month to help me out after having weightloss surgery. She loves Houston as much as I do so she knows a lot of places that I don't know. My sister knows how much I LOVE pepper soup and since I was able to eat soups and soft foods she treated me to a nice dinner from this restaurant. So, I will say that my order alone would have received 4 stars. Actually 4 1/2 if I could. She ordered me the tilapia pepper soup which I've never had, I've only had goat. The soup came with rice and a spinach looking dish. Yum!!! The pepper soup was so spicy like I like and even though it's contraindicated to eat spicy food so soon after surgery I Slurpee down that delicious broth that is so unique to a well made pepper soup! My taste buds have changed and I know longer can eat rice so I gave my portion to my sister. Now, my sister ordered croacker in red stew and jollof rice and plantain. My sister made sure to let them know that she wanted the red stew on the side to dip into as she eats her food. She can't tolerate spice like I can. She called to call back the store and they basically just wanted her to deal with it. There was no practical solution as we even were eating dinner late, close to their closing time. I felt bad for my sister because her meal was ruined.

Yelp
I love this place. First experience with Nigerian cuisine and every restaurant I tried after fell flat. The Egusi soup is amazing.

Yelp
So I like to give small businesses a chance, even when their customer service/relations have been sub par. Unfortunately, the staff here is inept. I just left there not quite long ago to pick up an order. I had a "gift certificate" to commemorate my birthday. When I presented the cashier with it, she got the attention of another worker (male) whom I presumed to be a team lead of sorts. I was then told to insert my card and that my so called gift certificate would somehow magically apply itself to my order. I thought it odd, but complied anyway. Upon receiving my printed receipt, yup, you guessed it- there was NO discount applied. I called the attention of the lady who told spewed the bogus line and in her words "I really don't know how this works but I think you have to sign up for the loyalty program or so". Well duh! Isn't being in the loyalty program the reason I received the gift certificate in the first place? A total of four employees out front, two (males) on their personal phone and no one cared to figure out what the issue was. I mean I can afford my meal many times over without gift certificates, but it's the principle for me, which is sorely lacking. DEFINITELY WILL NOT BE RETURNING. This is Olivia by the way. Number ends in 5110.

Yelp
It took over two hours for just two sides of stew and the stews were too spicy and didn't even look like stew at all! Bad service and bad tasting food!

Yelp
My first experience eating Nigerian food and it was delicious. I plan to go again when I get the time. The employee I spoke with was very helpful and nice. Food was delicious. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
To the owner- Thanks for responding but instead of worrying about me eating something that is less straining to my pockets please worry about your suya and how high the price is. This is the thing about African people. You can't give an honest review without being attacked. Not cool at all. Learn to take criticism. I work to hard and I can eat whatever I want but if something is over priced I will always speak up. That suya was not worth $2.33 a stick. Lower your prices. And if you don't want to then fine! Just don't attack customers who post honest reviews and talk about their finances. Not professional of you!

Yelp
Greedy establishment. Constantly out of EVERYTHING. Will take an order, and have you wait an entire hour for it to come out before telling you that they're out of key components that are required to make your order because they don't want to miss the same. Disorganized, inconvenient and food overall lacks flavor. This is my third and final visit here. I won't be back.

Yelp
I usually order from Trinity, but I was really craving beef suya today and this was one of the only places that had it and that was open during this pandemic! And OMG am I glad I made that 42min drive from Conroe, it was totally worth it! The service is impeccable, the cashier is very articulate and professional, my Suya skewers were SOOOO GOOOOD omg I'm a little upset I didn't get more, I should've known they were going to be delicious by the pictures you can SEE the flavor! None the less the portion of stew and hollow rice I got that came with a side of plantain was absolutely fulfilling to my craving!

Yelp
My best friend and I are making an effort to try a new restaurant every week and Taste of Nigeria was on our bucket list for this week! I've passed by the restaurant every now and then and I've always wanted to try it and we finally did! We did a phone in order. Customer service was excellent. We ordered the Jollof with chicken, beef suya, fish pie, and a chicken pie. Jollof: delicious, tomato-y, slight spicy goodness. It also came with a side salad that was some cooked greens and if you mix it with the Jollof, it's delicious Chicken: the chicken was in a red stew/sauce that was slightly spicy and delicious. I was not sure what the flavor profile was for the sauce, but I wanted to pour it on everything! The chicken was also cooked perfectly. Beef Suya: we read many reviews that said this was good so we wanted to give it a shot. It was okay, the spices were tasty but the meat was a little cold which happens when you get takeout of course. I feel like it would taste much better if we got it fresh in the restaurant, but I think they could find a better way to package it so it doesn't get cold so quickly because our other food was still warm. Fish pie: this was pretty good too! Definitely recommend if you like seafood. It has a seafood flavor but it's not too strong and it's best when it's warm. Chicken pie: this was pretty good too! I liked this one a bit more than the fish one. Pretty flavorful! Overall, we really liked the food! The only downside was that the suya didn't really meet our expectations but we will definitely be coming back to try more stuff! I'm interested in the coconut rice, chicken suya, beef pie, and some of the grilled fish, so y'all will see us again!

Yelp
Wednesday January 8, 2020 Every once in awhile my coworkers and I would pick a dinner place after work and just chill and not have to worry about work. Or possibly gossip. You know? A spouse of my coworker is Nigerian and one of my coworkers is Nigerian as well. So they thought, why not. Let's try this place out. It'll be comfort food for them. We made a reservation for 15 people so one of my coworkers called a day before to make a reservation and in addition to that, they made sure that they had halal meat as stated on the menu. Since we do have a lot of culturally diverse people, having halal meat was a plus. But to be sure they called just to make sure. And of course they stated yes. (I'll get to that part) When we all arrived we had a long table reserved for us. The restaurant has actually quite small. It basically has the space of a bar. There is a bar space, but overall very small and if it was flipped you could turn it into one. We were basically the only one's dining in. You would see people here and there coming to get pick up orders. You didn't really see people dining besides ourselves. When it came to ordering, a few gripes come to mind. Coconut Fried Rice - there's a dish that was called coconut fried rice that my coworker and I were interested in. And it seems a couple others were as well. Since a couple of use we're closer to the kitchen, of course the waitress comes to our end of the table first. Now here's where the gripe comes in. Someone before us had ordered that dish right before it was our turn and when we tried to order it, the waitress states, "oh we don't have anymore." Wait what?? We were quite confused because there's 15 if us and you're telling us that you only have ONE serving of that dish?????? How is that even possible. So does that mean if our group ordered that dish, you wouldn't have it for the remaining of the night? What if other people who made take out orders ALSO warned that dish?? So many questions. And when that order came out... it was SPICY AND SWEET. My mouth was confused. This ain't no mango habanero wings from Buffalo Wild Wings. This was coconut fried rice that gave a confusing palate. Halal options - a couple of my coworkers eat halal and when we called ahead of time they made sure to inform us that they did indeed have halal. When we arrived, the waitress was confused as hell when they were asked if halal chicken was available. She was so confused thinking that they don't even serve halal meat. When my coworker pointed at the menu stating it was an up charge to have halal meet, the waitress was even more confused. Hello???? How do they not know?? So the waitress had to go to the back to make sure. She came back and stated that they didn't carry or didn't have it at the time. And again the next option was beef and of course she didn't know and had to do another trip to the back to ask. And finally was told yes. Let's hope that yes was true. - everything was spicy. And I mean EVERYTHING. Reminds me of Mala Szechuan food but instead it's Nigerian food. Everything was numbing. I'm not sure if I quite enjoyed it. Maybe it's an acquired taste but my palate was not enjoying it. I was one of few that did not take any leftovers. There was just too much rice. It reminds me of when you go to a middle eastern restaurant and the rice to meat ratio is ridiculous. It's like a 3:1 ratio where you're eating way more rice than the actual entree itself. I need more meat. The actual service itself was decent. The two waitresses accommodated to my group of 15 even though we were the ONLY ones actually dining in. And it seems we had to go up to the counter to pay vs the check coming out to us. No big deal. Overall this just was not my cup of tea. Many of us thought it was okay but not really worth remembering. Unfortunately nothing stood out to me to even remember a dish I had or tried that would make me want to come back.

Yelp
They food is ALWAYS hot and there has not been one meal that I've gotten, that wasn't delicious. Be prepared to what because it's made to order. The portion size is comparable to the price the mixed meats could have more--"mix" but, meh. Side Note: The owner is personable and extremely friendly.

Yelp
Myself and two others came here for dinner for the first time and it will be our last time. When we arrived the sign said to seat ourselves so we did. We sat there for 10-15 minutes waiting on a host but no one ever came to us. I decided to go to the counter to see how we can go about placing an order and that's when a host finally came to take our orders. We ordered two appetizers, two main courses, a side and drinks. We requested specific appetizers such as meat pie and puff puff but were told "sorry we don't have any more of that". strike one! My friend was sure to tell the host that when the appetizers are ready to bring it out, because we were starving. We waited about 45 minutes and the appetizers never came out. However, another patron that came after us received their appetizer before us and it was the same appetizers we ordered. I summoned the host to ask about our appetizers because how can someone who came after us receive theirs before us and furthermore it had been 45 minutes. She looked at the other patrons table and said "sorry they made a mistake, that was suppose to be for you." Strike two! At that point in time, she informed us that they were out of pounded yam for our main dish so we went for eba. Five minutes later she came out with a both the appetizers and the main entrees and states "I am sorry we have bad news, we do not have any more plantain" plantain was the side order. Strike three! At this point we were over it and honesty if we didn't wait damn near an hour for our food we would have left. When the food arrived it was warm but we ate our appetizers and took the rest to go because at this point who is eating both the appetizer and entree at the same time. We were visibly upset at the horrendous service that we received which prompted the host to ask " how was everything, do we have any complaints?" I responded "what is the point of complaining, what will be done about it?" She stared at me blankly-exactly. They could have at least offered a free drink or something to remedy the 45 minute wait. Overall this experience was terrible. They did not have not enough food, the service was horrible and the food was mediocre.

Yelp
Visit Date: 08Jan2020 If you're looking for some authentic Nigerian food in the city, I think Taste of Nigeria is a great option. This was my first time having Nigerian food, but I had some people educating and guiding me through the process that are from Nigeria and familiar with the culture! We started off with the Suya . It was DELICIOUS!! The order comes with 6 kabobs, which is perfect for sharing. I personally ate 3, so more than one order is highly recommended! The fish meat pie was also good! This is a great dish for sharing as it comes in a mini pan. The texture is SO moist, flavorful and filling. As my main course, I chose the fried rice with chicken. This dish comes with a large portion of rice cheese, two larger chicken drumsticks in stew, plantains and cooked spinach. This is MORE than enough food and I had a whole meal as leftovers. The fried rice is super flavorful, but not too overwhelming. The stew for the chicken has some spicy spices, but the tomato base balances it all out. I was not a fan of the cooked spinach, but I think if mixed in the fried rice would be a nice balance of flavors and textures. The service is good and both waitresses were accommodating to our needs. With that being said, I don't think this restaurant is used to servicing large parties (we had 15). We called a day before to notify them we would be coming and that halal meats would be needed. Unfortunately, there were some mishaps in ordering and supply of halal. They ran out of coconut rice and only had one halal option. Bonus: great locations and free parking! Overall, I would recommend Taste of Nigeria!

Yelp
I frequently stop by here for authentic nigerian meals. The food is great and customer service is on point every time. No complaints from me.

Yelp
I had high expectations of this place because of its location, I thought that customer service would be paid attention to because we are no longer catering to just ourselves as Nigerians, but I was wrong. Customer service will always and should always be one of the most important pillars to a business and unfortunately that is not the case here. I'm only giving two stars because the food itself is not so bad, (def could be better) but customer service brings down the restaurant. I entered, waited a few mins for someone to sit me or at least show me where to sit. After that the waiter never came back or didn't even bother to bring water, I waited about 15 mins. 3 of the waitresses took their turn at staring me down, without offering service, I waived and one finally decided to come. I explained to her that it's not nice for waiters to pretend to fight over who they serve, but because I'm Nigerian I'm used to this type of service. Another 15 mins passes before my order is finally taken. I ordered grilled fish, decent, the spices and the hot sauce were okay...plantains were not many but whatever. My water never got refilled, meanwhile the banter and the chit chatting amongst employees by the register really did a number on my nerves. I ordered something else, the goat meat pepper soup. The goat meat pepper soup was watered down, no actual flavors in the meat...perhaps they were not at boiling point together, but I ended up adding some salt and pepper to make it a bit tastier, kinda wished I could have gone back to the kitchen to show them how it's done, but whatever. My finished fish stayed as long as my second meal, the waitress never came back to pick up the finished plates. I endured it, it's a pity that we are still making the same mistakes over and over again with Nigerian restaurants. Train your staff, get a customer service consultant if you don't know how to set yourself apart. This place has become just another Nigerian restaurant with a nice concept but no customer service. Next time I'll take my hard earned money where I can be better appreciated. The sad thing is that I have had the same experiences at Cafe Abuja, you would think that having a more central location will prompt you to treat clientele differently, but same old habits here too. Very disappointing.
