"I learned that a brand-new restaurant, Taste of Nigeria, just debuted near the Galleria at 5959 Richmond Avenue. The new eatery, from husband-and-wife Ayo and Tiffaney Odewale of Cafe Abuja, is a larger, more upscale spinoff with seating for about 50, wood-clad walls, punched copper pendant lights, and a bar (unlike Cafe Abuja). They expanded the menu to more than 50 dishes to represent many Nigerian tribes, offering traditional soups made from bitter leaves, mango seeds, okra, palm nuts, and honey beans; “pepper soups” with fish, goat, or oxtail and African spices served with rice; Cameroonian-spiced grilled or fried seafood plates served with yams, rice, shrimp, and salad; and rice-and-bean plates topped with proteins such as fish, oxtail, beef, chicken, and goat. Ayo's culinary history stretches back to Nigeria—his mother was a caterer and he grew up cooking with her—and Tiffaney says opening restaurants here was a dream of theirs. Taste of Nigeria is now open and serving from 1 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily except Mondays; check its website for possible hour changes." - Alaena Hostetter
