Taste of the Himalayas Review - Sonoma - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"A small restaurant hidden away from the buzz of Sonoma Plaza, Taste of the Himalayas serves Tibetan, Nepali, and Indian dishes. You’ll find Indian standards like samosas, tikka masala, and saag paneer, as well as Nepali classics like the lamb momo with tomato chutney or the mismas tarkari (mixed vegetable curry). For dessert, don’t miss the gulab jamun, delicately fried dumplings made from milk solids and served with cardamom honey." - Allison Green

Fantastic food, reasonably priced, great atmosphere and really friendly staff. Honestly, I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this place. I will definitely go back if in the area. The photo might look a little misleading. It’s actually a pretty big portion. I had the samosas, some naan and the tikka masala. 10/10!

We came in on a Friday night and it took quite a while to be served. But I understand that staffing issues are a challenge for everybody these days. And the servers that were there were very attentive when they could be and hopefully the food was fresh and yummy. It just took a long time to get and that's the reason I gave them four stars. I ordered one of the appetizers. That's in the picture which was a chicken vegetable dish and it was quite delicious.Although a little spicy for my taste and my dinner mates ordered the tiki masala and it was a very generous portion and also too spicy for my taste so I didn't need much of that but I understand that it was quite delicious.

Google
HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED..... Ordered himalayan biryani which is a combo of chicken, shrimp and lamb... The Taste was okay but not great.. Found only one shrimp in the whole packet . Will avoid next time & do not recommend ... spending $21 was not worth..👎👎👎👎👎

Google
First and foremost the price is decent, the portions could do better. I do agree that the curries were a tad bit sweet, but missing a few ingredients to give it that kick, the pakora was tasty. Wish there was more. The chicken butter Masala was very buttery and the chicken vindaloo was too sweet, wish they had more meat then sauce. The herbal Naan was so heavenly it fused and melted in your mouth with the savory and herbal mixture melting on your pallete. The service was great. Our server was nice and ensured we were well taken care of. If you are in yhe area I would recommend coming to five them a Try the aesthetic is very appealing

This was about my 5th time coming here and I feel I have enough experience to right a review. I must say the food is absolutely amazing it's a simple menu with nothing out of its place. Super saucy, great flavor and just overall awesome! I enjoy the dishes they use to serve, too, nice touch. I have had all of the lamb curries, momos, naan, the pastry apetizers and of course the Chicken Tikka Masala. All pretty good, especially the naan (can't go wrong with delicious bread) but the spice levels vary on the curry for sure. Tikka? Totally rock a 6. The Takari? 4 is plenty thank you. Definetly worth a visit for the food. The service is where it lacks. Out of the 5 times, 2 were rough experiences, 1 was great and 2 were mediocre. Some servers don't write the order down and have messed up the order a couple times and were just not the best people to interact with. Not to mention one of the experiences I had the server did not seem "fully aware" and even said he wouldn't place the order a friend requested for whatever reason and argued with him about it until he complied. That was a one-off experience, however, and to me the food is worth coming back. Also, I've had good interactions, too, more than not. I recommend trying it out, love it and will come back often myself. - $60 for two - parking is average - food is amazing - service is better more often than not

I had the Chicken Kadhai and Vegetable Momos. Both were delicious. Quantity and quality are perfect for the price. I love that momos have 8 pieces and not 6 like most other places.

Our favorite spot in Hillcrest for dinner. The food is delicious and service is excellent. We have our favorites (Shayal & Jamie) of course but you can’t go wrong with this cozy little restaurant. Pics included for Jamie’s extra attention to detail.

Google
I visited in September 2022 and then the food was awesome. Visited in Feb 2023 and the quality has gone way down. I am not sure the reason. May be they changed the cooks. Will not be coming here again. I tried palak paneer ( it was less green and more brown) and lamb korma. Both had too much sweet in them.

Yelp
This spot is my favorite place to visit when I'm craving Indian food! The service is always impeccable and fast. You can tell they make everything fresh, which makes your dining experience so much better. Whenever we go, we order the chicken tikka masala, saag aloo, and garlic naan. Ugh... so good! You can customize your level of spice to your liking. They also provide a side of rice when ordering an entree. This place is truly the best to grab authentic Indian food. They do share parking with other stores, so parking can be a hassle sometimes, there's also street parking in the back if no parking is available. Thanks for being amazing, Taste of the Himalayas!

Yelp
Taste of the Himalayas has limited seating indoors, but seems like they do a steady takeout and walk-in business. Food came out fairly quickly and was tasty! It makes for great leftovers too!

Yelp
Delicious food Loved all of their portions and meals. Service was impeccable It was cute and quaint. Came in right before they closed. They were closing early because it was slow. They invited us in very nicely.

Yelp
This restaurant tucked away near Trader Joe's offered a delightful surprise. They boast both a cozy indoor dining area and a charming outdoor patio, ideal for enjoying a meal in the fresh air. The service was acceptable; while it was quiet during my visit (just another couple on the patio), the food took about 20 minutes to arrive after ordering. While the chicken tikka masala wasn't quite a home run, the rest of the experience definitely was. The sauce itself was rich and flavorful, though a touch sweeter than some might prefer (as others have mentioned). However, the chicken itself was a bit overcooked and dry, which impacted the overall dish. The real star of the show was the paneer naan. The texture of the bread was fantastic, light and fluffy, even if it could have used a slightly more generous cheese filling. Regardless, the flavor was on point. The accompanying rice stole the show for me - fragrant and flavorful, likely infused with cumin seeds (just a guess!). It perfectly complemented the rich curry sauce, leaving me wishing I could find something similar back home. The price might be a tad higher than some other Indian restaurants in the area, but considering the large portions and high-quality ingredients, it felt reasonable, particularly for an out-of-town visit. Overall, a solid option for flavorful Indian food with generous portions. While the chicken tikka masala wasn't perfect, the other elements truly impressed. Definitely worth checking out!

Yelp
I would definitely recommend obviously the naan , but the chicken tikka masala is so good. Would also recommend is called sag paneer is really good as well. The service is slow, and I think they only have a chef and a waiter working. Making it very slow. The place itself is very cultural and the paintings of mountains are very pretty. Overall a 4.3

Yelp
I never leave disappointed. Pet friendly! Authentic food. I don't regret ordering level 8 but I stick to level 7 most of the time. My husband is Bangladeshi and he agrees it's authentic food! don't forget the mint chutney it's like lemon on your tacos!

Yelp
My first time at an indian restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised. First of all, the restaurant is so cute which charming outdoor seating. We got the chicken tikka masala and bhanta ra chicken both at mild spice levels. They both were delicious but I felt that the chicken tikka masala didn't have enough flavor? Or maybe it lacked a bit of the spice. The bhanta ra was more appropriately spiced so that was delicious. I also was expecting the portion sizes to be bigger but maybe this is normal for indian dishes. The garlic cilantro naan is sooo delicious. Packed full of garlic flavor with crispy edges but very fluffy!!

Rahul M.

Yelp
Was ok ok types experience. Not too bad neither great. Fortunately no wait time. Ordered panner tikka masala and Malai kofta, 2 garlic naan. Each entree comes with its own rice place, which is a + point. Taste was decent, nothing great or extra ordinary. When asked to have extra garlic and cilantro in the garlic naan, received the response it already has a lot. On receiving the garlic naan, I did not see anything extra, neither garlic nor the cilantro. Unsure why my request wasn't adhered to. Curry for both the entrees seem to be the same :( On requesting side of onions and lemon, we were told it would be salad order for $6. Never heard ever that $6 for couple onion slices + couple lemon pieces. Would prefer lil extra courtesy and better customer service and some passion in the cooking.

Yelp
We got takeout here while my mom was in town and we really enjoyed it! My mom got the mushroom masala and I got the Nawaratan korma. We ended up eating mostly mine because it was so good. I did end up eating the mushroom masala for leftovers. But the nawaratan was a hit! We also got garlic naan, veggie samosas, and mixed momo. We liked the chicken momo better then the veggie. The samosas were really good and the naan needed heating up but much better after that!

Yelp
Food was ok, but it took forever to eat there. Their hours don't reflect what they advertise. Took three times trying to eat here. It's not that they are busy, they just don't staff correctly to open on time when they say (could be an hour over their advertised hours). If you're planning to go, I'd go later in the day to assure they are open. I have only been once. I got the Butter Chicken. The food was decent, but I feel the constancy of trying to attend, when they were always closed soured the experience. Once they were open, the staff were kind and the aroma is pleasant with all the spices.

Yelp
AMAZING BUTTER CHICKEN! I usually do their spice level 7/8 with a side of garlic naan bread. The chicken is so tender the rice is cooked to perfection and the naan just tops everything! Highly recommend if you havent or have tried Indian food!! 10/10 Love the outside seating such a vibe.

Yelp
Love this place. Our family has been coming here since the midway location first opened. This location is a little more convenient and Andrew is absolutely Amazing! His customer service is outstanding.

Yelp
10/10 amazing every time, the food is nothing like you've ever tasted in San Diego. Great lunch specials and amazing dinner

Yelp
Omg!! This was delicious! We came about 5PM and enjoyed outdoor dining. We ordered the chicken tikka masala as well as the bhanta ra chicken. We ordered both at a 5 spice level which was perfect for the bhanta ra but i would recommend going higher for the tikka masala. The tikka masala was creamy and rich, a little sweet therefore I would get a higher spice but the bhanta ra was so flavorful and delicious. Can't forget the garlic cilantro naan which was by far my favorite that I've had in San Diego. It was buttery and flavorful and so so good. Overall a great experience!!

Yelp
Server was great. Food was great. We ordered just the right amount of food, left our plates cleaned. If you check in on Yelp you get. Free snack. But just know there was no AC so be prepared.

Yelp
First of all, the food was great. There were 2 of us, and we enjoyed our food. We came here because I had a birthday coupon from their birthday club. The reason why I gave 3 stars is due to the service. We were the only ones in the restaurant until the moment we got the check and there didn't seem to be many to-go orders being fulfilled. Maybe 1 or 2 the entire time. It took awhile to ask for water and then it took awhile to receive that water. There's no A/C so the temp was the same outside and inside, about 85F either way. Cold water would have been nice right away. The food took awhile to get, but that's honestly where I have to give some grace because this food does take time to make. It was very delicious. The time to get the check took a long time as we were waiting and contemplating on just walking up to the register and paying upfront. Overall, this place would get 5 stars out of us if the service is quicker and more attentive. The food was great, so if they picked up the pace on the other end, it would be a great establishment.

Yelp
When we discovered this place about a year ago, we loved it. We thought the food was amazing. I don't know what has happened since. We tend to order the same foods each time. The past couple of times we thought were not as good, but tonight was nearly inedible. We ordered our favorite--malai kofta. The vegetable balls were tasteless and mushy, and the sauce was just strange. Very orange and bland with too much sweetness. The saag paneer was also orange, which was really weird since it should be green. There was very little spinach and also fairly tasteless. We also ordered an eggplant/potato dish that was new to us that was also not good. Sadly we won't be going back.

Yelp
The food is so delicious here and the waitstaff are wonderful, professional, and very sweet!!! all the food is great my favorite is the chicken korma! :) it's a very cute place - wonderful ambience, very charming decor.

Yelp
The food is delicious. I love the nawaratan korma and the chicken tikka masala. They're always delicious.

Yelp
We enjoyed a relaxing lunch here. The menu is huge and you can order dishes to be as spicy or not spicy as you prefer. We started with vegetarian samosas since that is the favorite app of our one companion that couldn't make it. We took pictures of them and us eating them and sent them to her because we're a little crazy and we were having fun. I didn't know what to get for an entree so I went with my Indian favorite, nawaratan korma. This vegetarian dish is made with veggies and paneer in a savory sauce made from cashews and spices. If you've never tried this, Taste of the Himalayas has a fine version! We also enjoyed garlic and herb naan. It was very flavorful. We could come back here a dozen times easily and order something different every time. Like I said, the menu is huge. Life is good with vegetarian Indian food!

Lizzeth B.

Yelp
"The service was amazing, My friend recommended this place and I didn't know that you get a free desert on your birthday, they sang happy birthday to a girl next to us, the buisness is small and the appetizers were late with the meal, But the service was great.
google avatar

Andrea W.

Yelp
It does not matter how long it's been since the last time I ate here. Food is exactly the same. Delicious. They have the best chicken tikka Marsala ever! Love this little place.

Yelp
Really good food. Very nice atmosphere. We loved it and will definitely return. Service was excellent

Yelp
Point Loma location is the one I've always been too. First time at this location and it's equally as good. Plenty of parking. Has indoor and patio seating. Very vegetarian friendly. I got the vegetable momo which are dumplings with paneer. I'm not a fan of paneer but it wasn't noticeable. I also got vegetable samosa, came with two. Very flavorful. Got Daal soup which is a lentil soup. For my main dish I got vegetable vindaloo. The vindaloo here is a bit different than other places that I've eaten. There's lots of vegetable that took over the sauce. The sauce was creamy and not spicy. Naturally this dish is spicy. But you had 1 through 10 level and I picked 3. It wasn't spicy. The chiya masala tea was my favorite. It tastes like chai tea and it takes 20 minutes to make from scratch with milk spiced tea so order it early on. We ordered herb naan and cilantro garlic naan. The cilantro naan is the way to go.
google avatar

Tracy L.

Yelp
Food was delicious and very fresh! The samosa appetizer was so flaky and flavorful. We also loved the chicken momo appetizer, had never had it before...so good! I got the chicken tandoori and garlic naan bread, highly recommend. Service was great, very friendly. Will be back!

Yelp
Great service! Try the chicken Kadai. Inside is very cute... lots of color, outdoor patio is very pleasant

Yelp
Cute restaurant; great food, good portions- we ordered: garlic cilantro naan, butter chicken, Bhanta Ra Chicken & Lamb Tarkari. Staff were friendly and great service for a busy crowd. Will definitely go back!

Yelp
one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego, delicious. Excellent wait staff too. I love the chicken tikka masala and palak paneer as well as the chai tea.

Yelp
Looks like new owners or they started cut corners. The food USED to be good. Now it's nowhere near what it used to be.
google avatar

Yelp
First time eating here. The service is great. Andrew is taking care of us. We started with the samosas. Delicious. Light and crunchy on the outside. Chutney is amazing. Rich in flavor.

Yelp
This charming and comfortable Nepalese restaurant offers authentic flavors, textures and selections of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. My sister and I enjoyed the Nawartan Korma with fresh vegetables, coconut milk and a side of buttered nan fresh from the tandoori oven. Their papadum and chutney is made in-house and their spices and recipes are sourced from Nepal and authentic suppliers outside of San Diego and the local market. Our server, Andrew, was thoroughly familiar with the menu and our spice level preference, which was mild. Those with a more adventurous palate can request their food with customizable heat level. I have eaten at all four of the Himalayan Grill restaurants in San Diego and they are all scrumptious and make me feel transported to an exotic land.

Yelp
Great mid afternoon lunch. Excellent service. Chill ambiance. Try the 911 sauce. Yum!

Yelp
Amazing food and service! The momos, papads , , and naan bread are to die for. Love this place

Yelp
Placed an order to go after several good experiences eating here. To go order was less than ideal. Rice was gummy, Butter Chicken only had 4 small pieces of chicken and the Kheer was comically small. Other than the rice, all tasted good but were nowhere near the quality of eating at the restaurant. We seemed to have been given leftovers. : (

Gabriel Z.

Yelp
This place is amazing!!! Looks, smells, and taste astonishing. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking for amazing service, food, and atmosphere. Especially with friends!

Janeen C.

Yelp
This place is amazing! Trust the waitstaff for recommendations- they won't steer you wrong :)

Yelp
Love the Salmon Tandoori. Tender and juicy. Worth waiting a bit longer for it. We'll keep coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
I completely devoured everything. I got the Chicken Korma and Paneer Naan Everything was delicious and well cooked. The Korma wasn't spicy which is perfect for me. This Nepalese restaurant is perfect for dates, friend gatherings, the decor and music, is golden. The staff is super friendly, I will be back!

Yelp
We love the is place! I live right around the corner and come here all the time. I love the momos and bhanta ra chicken- eggplant is my favorite. The waiters are always kind and the service is fabulous. Happy to have this restaurant in my neighborhood!

Sonia L.

Yelp
I was visiting from out of town and decided to give this place a try. I ordered Chana masala and a side of garlic naan and it was authentic with great flavor. The first time I ordered was by phone directly through the restaurant and the person on the phone as well as the staff when I came was very friendly. The portion size of the food was good and the naan was large in size. I ordered a second time through Uber eats (same food) and again the flavor, portion size and service of staff did not disappoint. I forgot to select a mild spiciness and I called the restaurant directly and they updated the order.

Yelp
Amazing food and amazing service! so grateful to have found this place. a true gem in a great area. clean environment with generous portions of high quality , authentic Himalayan food

Keri K.

Yelp
LOVE this location! The atmosphere is beautiful and provides both an indoor and outdoor setting. Been getting something different every time I dine and I must say, I have not been let down in any way. The flavors are all outstanding, unique and there's a wide variety of selections to choose from! In my most recent experience I dined in and was blown away by the courtesy and kind welcoming by server Andrew! He made wonderful suggestions and we were blown away by the attention to detail and the combinations he suggested Definitely will be taking his word for future visits. Thank you for the cozy and peaceful vibe! See you again soon!

Brendan C.

Yelp
Ordered takeout and I did not actually pick up the meal personally, so I can't speak to the service only the food. We got 2 chicken tikka masalas mild and one lamb tikka masala with garlic naan and a mango lassi. I have to say the chicken tikka masala was one of the worst I've ever had; the sauce was watery and bland and the amount of chicken and lamb was almost pitiful. The naan was decent with a good amount of garlic and the only bright spot was the mango lassi. It was pretty good just wish it was colder.
google avatar

Thomas T.

Yelp
Chicken Tikka Masala with rice and Raita pair very nicely together here. I recommend getting it at level 1 spiciness.
google avatar

Xylina B.

Yelp
This place is great. The outside seating is cute. Andrew was our server and was super helpful and pleasant! Samosas are delicious and straight comfort food style. The cilantro nan, yum!
google avatar

Curt T.

Yelp
It was ok. The service was very good but I do prefer the Indian place along friars road a little better. The garlic cilantro naan bread was delicious and their paneer was good. Just didn't get as much paneer as you do at the other place. Good food for sure just wish the portions were a little bigger for the price.
google avatar

Sebastian S.

Yelp
Service would get 0/5 if possible. The Naan bread is lackluster and dry. Portions are small and flavorless. This restaurant also does sketchy things with their receipts. If you look at other people's reviews you'll find they have a history of adding extra hidden "charges" for no reason, no itemizing of bills, etc.
google avatar

Yelp
As someone who's been to Nepal. The food was DELICIOUS! They catered a little bit to the American palate but that's expected. The MoMo's are super popular. They sometimes sellout!
